Not terribly surprised about the Muslim Woman EMT - but I do recall when we were in Jordan (Muslim country) many moons ago, they have separate hospitals - one for the men, one for the women and babies. Children go to the respective hospitals - boys to the men's etc. Never had a reason to call for an ambulance so I have no idea if Jordan has separate male and female ambulance units.

She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms.

Yeah, I was thinking that women in any Orthodox community would want women EMTs and then women drs at the ERs.

Interesting about the Muslim woman EMT! (And yes, very observant Muslim women would want the same sort of situation.)

And, Mark, by the way, I don't think the ambulance is ever left unattended. Anytime I have seen them working, they arrive with the ambulance and several regular vehicles.

But in my search, I did find a Muslim woman working as an EMT in Israel. That still says a lot:

I don't think so, Phebe. But interestingly, when I went in search of EMTs in Mea Shearim, I found more on the haredi woman judge. What is fascinating is her husband, a Bobov Chasid, suppported her candidacy very strongly and "did not stop until she won." Well done!

EDIT: OK, apparently I am wrong. In the article cited above, it seems Hatzalah in Israel has a female corps. Makes sense, if you think about it.

Interesting - and yay for all of these women for taking these steps!

A thought, though - do they have women EMT units in places like Mea Sharim? Other Orthodox places in Israel?

I remember when she became a judge and saw something elsewhere about the women's EMT team. She's quite an amazing woman.

I read about this in another newspaper. This is great.

Not true, to my knowledge. Hatzalah is written in Hebrew and has been working for decades here in New York.

These women, from what I am learning, have been around for quite a few years already, and apparently have filled a need.

Change, in any stream, comes hard.

But a Hasidic woman judge! That was particularly impressive. And she still manages to stay true to her beliefs. Well done!

It is interesting.

How long until the vehicle with Hebew lettering gets vandalized as a hate crime? In many part so the country, not long.

Even in an ultra-Orthodox community, there are rumblings of change:
