Wow, Phebe. Your article is amazing.

When Jonas Salk was asked how much he stood to gain if he patented the Salk vaccine, his answer was "Can you patent the sun?"

And yet in the deep South they had two lines for receiving the vaccine: Whites and Coloreds.

They are saying that the crux of all this is sharing the news and learning the lessons from other countries' examples. It would simply be amazing that this would be the road to peace for all people. But probably that's an oversimplification.

Italians are making ventilators with 3-D printers now:

They would accept pig things, too.

Pekuach nefesh (to save a life) trumps all.

Insulin comes from pigs' pancreas as well as cows' then purified (medically, not religiously).

Yeah, more Grey's Anatomy - the usual protocol for a heart valve replacement is either an artificial valve or a pig heart valve. But cow heart valves can also be used, which is what they did on the show for an Orthodox Jewish patient.

They do have doctors who help write the show, so that the medicine is real, even if it is overly dramatic.

Once a teacher, always a teacher, LOL!

On an episode of Grey's Anatomy, one dr used a 3-D printer along with a patient's tissue to print a new heart valve - and, surprisingly, it worked. Not sure if this is even reality, but I know that drs are growing some body parts in labs using tissue from patients. This was one step up from what is already being done.

I just need a lab that will grow me a new pair of lungs!

In similar news, my brother (oldest of the 3 younger brothers) had shoulder surgery - an they did a tendon graft using a tendon from a cow! Who knew such a thing was possible?

Phebe, thank you for your lesson. That really made it crystal clear. Instead of in cartridges plastic cartridges. That makes perfect sense. And all it's doing is following the tracing.

Now I feel I can leave nursery school and start embarking on kindergarten.

Phebe, aren't you the bee's knees? Twenty-three skidoo.

Y'know, at least some of us had the first telephone answering machines, somewhat large objects. Then they became smaller and smaller. Then other developments rendered them obsolete.

This reminds me of being a teenager and groaning, "Oh, Dad, stop that" when he would lament how expensive things were, unlike the good old days. It hurts to recognize that, now and then, I think the same now.

As I understand it, 3-D printers have cartridges that are basically full of plastic. There's some heating element that melts the plastic as it prints, and the printer builds up layers of the melted plastic to create the object it is programmed to print.

Think of it as a giant automated glue gun, and it makes more sense.

There's also a pen that is similar - it takes a stick of colored plastic, melts it as you "draw," and you can create 3-D objects - I've seen videos of sculpture made this way, as well as household objects like an office trash can.

(Only reason I know these things is that I'm Facebook friends with former students, some of whom pursued careers in visual art. Much of that has gone digital. So they post videos and photos of what they are doing. Some of it is incredible!!! One is in animation, another is creating websites - all kinds of things. Anyway, it keeps me up on modern trends in some of this stuff.)

Have we reached that age?

My uncle used to ponder how things worked (it was the way he was wired). I used to say, “Who cares? Just press the button!” (I am far more simple-minded.)

I have the same problem. Someone did explain it, but I still find it puzzling. I think it works similar to devices we had that projected images that we could trace doing art work.

Right now I am thrilled that the technology is there and is able to reproduce the much-needed parts for ventilators that are so desperately needed.

3-D printers still puzzle me, high-tech as I am. When I first heard of them in days of yore, I thought that they turn out 3-D paper objects -- paper sculpture. It boggles me that they are turning out the real thing, whatever it is. How can that be? I wouldn't mind connecting with a user some time so that I can see a demo and get a closeup explanation in simple terms.

Brilliant!!!

After you posted the people making the masks, I wondered about ventilators. And now we know that it can be done!
