No wrapper was folded over. That was a blind drawing, hence, the aluminum-foil pan was way out of proportion. No candle, no delaying.

Never would have thought of putting it in the oven. That was the bakery's job! It didn't even have chocolate globs and swirls through and through as the babka in the photo does.

Chocolate chips on babka? What is this world coming to?

Perhaps you could have saved the babka from misguided innovation if you had heated that baby in the oven for about 5 minutes until the chips melted, and then let it cool into the traditional thick gobs of chocolate. I hope you put a candle in it.

LOL - I wasn't sure how much of it was eaten and how much was left. You definitely have the wrapper folded over the missing part!

Um, er, um, it's more like the chunk that's left. But, all in all, there's no way to know that it's supposed to be a babka chunk. Blind contour drawing, that's my plea.

Great food drawings! They're fun, aren't they? The babka doesn't necessarily look like babka, unless you already ate a bit of it? It looks like some pastry with a chunk torn off.

Oh, you do go on, Phebe. Thanks for all the shiny doodads. Lightning isn't far off the mark, considering the number of rainy days we've had recently.

Gail, I don't know Ayza, but I'm game.

I celebrated by going all of a half mile, the farthest I've wandered in a month or more, to Union Square Greenmarket. Yes, it's remained open . Bought me ramps, Swiss chard (much nicer than the stores offer) and gorgeous lettuce, the variety of which I don't recall. It's purple with pale green centers and elegantly shaped. La pièce de résistance is the chocolate babka I've been craving. Alas, I didn't take my dark glasses off to be sure it looked authentic through the plastic wrap. Back at the ranch, I found that the top is sprinkled with chocolate chips, inauthentic and would tear out the heart of any bubbe. I expected the particular vendor to be true to tradition.

This evening brought one of the Zoom classes from the school where I take watercolor. It was fun. I attempted a blind contour drawing of the babka and you can imagine what I got. Then I slapped some watercolor on the drawing. It was preceded by continuous-line contour, not blind, of some ramps in a utensil caddy with a wire whisk and a neighboring, bell pepper. This was drawn on the page on which I'd begun with notes on the teachers opening remarks. Such inattention is my wont. Nevertheless, I kinda like it. The setup is here, too.

Good idea! We will have sundaes at HoJo's for dessert. Following that we will toast the birthday girl with chocolate martinis at Ayza.

I found Ayza with a quick search for "NYC champagne & chocolate bar". If there is a better place then please lead us in that direction.

That was fun, but I'll never remember the phrases. The only way I'll learn Yiddish is if I have the opportunity to use it.

Boy, what does a person have to do to get noticed around here? Turn cartwheels?

More Yiddish? Yiddish Word of the Day!

A daily series of videos from the Forverts gives non-Yiddish speakers an introduction to familiar Yiddish words and phrases and how they might be used in everyday situations.

Today is day #1. The video is short (1:39 duration): Vos hert zikh? (Too funny! The "word of the day" is a phrase, followed by additional phrases!)

I grew up being told to bang my head and think it came when I'd complain of boredom, "I have nothing to do-o-o."

emoticon the closest thing to banging my head against the wall.

Tomorrow is my birthday, speaking of banging my head...

The tsibele mitn kopf in somewhere is the only part I remember - but I suspect my mother's pronunciation was not always accurate.

When we kids would say we were bored, she'd tell us "schlup kopf in vant" - loosely translates as "go bang your head against the wall."

She also had one that was "go hang yourself on a nice day." She didn't use that on us, but she would mutter it at people who were jerks on the phone or in a store.

It is a good one. It is more than likely in an old thread for four right here.
Calling Uncle Google:

Vaksn zolstu vi a tsibele mitn kop in dr'erd! (There are some variations; don't know which may be absolutely correct if there is such a thing.)
May you grow like an onion with your head in the ground.

I hope the Yiddish in Yiddish will print properly (nb: I deleted it because it printed no where close, just lots of symbols and number, five lines of them). The part about the feet in the air was new to me when someone -- maybe you, Phebe? -- bought it up in an earlier go-'round. It's somewhere in searchland.

I also know de kleine (the little one) and de groisse (the big one) - that's when people were talking about my sister and I - she was the big one.

I wish I could remember the curse about growing like an onion, head in the ground, feet in the sky. It was a good one.

Good morning. Close enough.

Shana punim - pretty face
Shana maidl - pretty little girl

Maidl (or maidel) = maidele - akin to Phebele -- little girl, little Phebe

I think I should have said oldest- or longest-performing company. The website indicates one, which suggests that there may be an older Yiddish theater company that stopped and restarted at least once.

A few years ago I wrote about seeing their production of the operetta, "Di Goldene Kale," aka "The Golden Bride." It was wonderful and thank goodness for the supertitles.

This is a find from Ecoage, a.k.a. Gail.

The link provides a variety of concerts, music, theater, interviews and discussions. If your computer of device doesn't do well here, everything is available on YouTube.

Have fun with the oldest existing Yiddish theater company even if the participants aren't original members.
