There is nothing wrong with drugs and taking care of the symptoms. I'm just trying to reduce as many of the side effects as possible with out adding more meds.

This is a 'mom' again.
When my 'baby' started losing her hair, she went ahead
and had her hubby shave it off. She donated it for wigs.
Her soon to be 20yr. old has done that several times.
When she was taking Chemo. after the first week-end
which she was 'down'. The rest of the time she continued
to work, driving 1 hr to and from work. Really no weight
gain.
But, with the radition she lost weight, and her eyes appeared
suken and dk. circle and her face was 'gaunt'. When finished
she returned to normal. That's her with me in my profile. She
is now 45!
If any mom's would like to contact me, I would be honored
to help give moral support when ever possible, or just talk.

What's wrong with drugs? I was given the pre-nausea meds, then Compazine for prevention afterwards. They worked very well, I just had a minor bit of queasiness.

One stumble does not a failure make.

Everything in moderation.

Nausea - I feel for you. No remedies, just sympathy. I can say that I one of the few I have ever heard of who had NO Nausea, not even once during chemo. I had MANY other problems and nearly died but I was not nauseous. The funny thing was that the nausea was the one side effect I most dreaded.

Good luck.

Try ginger or try orange peel (aromatherapy not to eat). I didn't have too much nausea but others have told me that it really works.
You can do it! Never underestimate the power of positive thinking!

If it makes you feel any better, I actually lost 13 lbs during chemo because it so thoroughly killed my appetite and made food taste funny. I have been done with the chemo since April 4th and have maintained the loss!

Good luck to you!

Oh Sue,
Trust me, I know what you mean!! I sort of enjoyed being bald... especially in the summer!! But the weight gain was not fun... what is funny is I didn't really gain that much weight while going through chemotherapy... I made sure I stayed as active as possible.... I walked (slowly on some days) and I stayed as active as possible. So at most I gained 3 - 5 pounds during my chemo (not bad!!)...As for the aches from Neulasta ... I didn't really have any... well... my one hip bothered me for a bit but it only lasted one day after the neulasta shot.

Then I went on Tamoxifen and that is where I gained weight!! Though, admittedly, I was also dealing with the emotional eating of losing my mom right after I finished my chemo (she passed from leukemia and had also been a b.c. survivor)... and I developed plantar fasciitis so that put me out of commision exercise wise -- so the combination of the tamoxifen, emotional eating and not being able to exercise.... I gained 30 more pounds!! Argh!

Then I wound up having to have a hysterectomy (that is a whole other story)... but the good part is I was able to stop the tamoxifen. They wanted me to go on another medication but I have chosen (for now) to NOT go on the medication... hedging my bets on losing weight and getting more exercise being just as beneficial in keeping the cancer from coming back.

This team was a HUGE HUGE help while I was going through chemo and it continues to be my main support when it comes to weight loss!!

Stay strong my friend ~ You can get through this!

I go back in for the shot today at 4. Didn't know about the heartburn, just the bone ache. I'm already taking tums for hearburn and I've got some prilosec sitting at home. Looks like I'll be picking up some ginger as well.

Thanks for the tidbits. Any other helpfull hints on losing weight on the T/C regime would be really appreciated. I'm fine with losing my hair, but from what I've ready the likely weight gain on top of what I've alreay been trying to lose is almost too depressing for words.

1 down, 3 to go.

Sue ~ I am a b.c. survivor ~ finished my last treatment in Sept 2010. I thought I'd have a lot of nausea after my chemo treatments but I really didn't have any - what I did have after I got the Neulasta shot (I had to get one within 24 hours of my chemo treatment)... is that I had a lot of reallly bad heart burn - NOTHING seemed to help it! The over the counter heart burn meds didn't touch it - I never had such bad heartburn. So I wound up taking another prescription medication to manage the heartburn (reluctantly) and I found that I could only eat very bland foods during those bouts of heartburn (crackers, plain mashed potatoes, plain rice.

As for handling nausea naturally -- I am a registered dietitian - and what I normally tell my pregnant clients or those who try to avoid medications if at all possible... is to use raw ginger. You can find it at a health food store or even in the natural / health food section of your grocery store.

Hope this helps!! Try to stay positive -- and laugh whenever you can! Laughter is the best medicine! ((((hugs))))) help too!!

Why not try the early pregnancy method?
Saltine crackers before getting out of bed! Can't say for sure, but, sure won't hurt the try.

Does anyone have any good nausea remedies that don't include more drugs? I have them if I need them but.............just trying to be prepared for when the pre-drugs wear off.

Thanks!
