Mikey is alittle active, He sometimes gets these little spurts of energy and he will jump on Tyger or Patches then he has to go lay down for a while. He has been giving me the eyes like Rico did before he left us.So i have been holding him and cuddling him alot more. He still grumps about being picked up the old grouch. But Mikey has had a pretty good life like all our fur babies here on Sparkpeople. some days he is alittle more hungry than others so i feed him more. I have been putting gravy from Chicken Gumbo(I freeze it then warm it up to put on the food) and he likes it and the vet said he is old enough to eat anything he likes.(Tyger & Patches gets alittle also). I took Tyger for his ck up yesterday, he weighs 8lbs the vet said he needs to lose weight. so i will include him in my walks to the mailbox which is about 1/4 mile from the house he hates exercise. LOL
THE WEATHER IS SO BEAUTIFUL HERE. I have the windows opened letting the breeze in.

Thanks for all your information,KIMBEEJ16. Sasha has been coughing for a while now, but I never thought too much of it. Now I'm aware of every cough so I'll take her back for a re-check in a little while.

Hi Pat, at 19, is Mikey still active and getting around ok? I don't think I can wait 6 months to have Sasha rechecked. She'll probably go back to the vet in 3 months unless there's any reason to go sooner.

Yes, enalapril is what Cal was taking. I just wish I had had the vet give him lasix. I would maybe still have him. Though he would be 17 now.

Your vet is right...just keep an eye out for coughing and recheck as directed. They can live for years with a heart murmer, and it may not get any worse. If it does, your vet will probably do x-rays and an ECG to evaluate the heart condition. Then, medication such as enalapril will usually be prescribed to help the heart work better. If there is fluid build up in the lungs, then lasix (furosemide) or spironolactone will generally be used and tapered as needed to help control that. Other drugs such as pimomenden can also be added as needed. Many little dogs live for years and can be controlled quite well. Your vet will also want to monitor some blood work as well to make sure kidney function remains stable while on heart meds.
Hope your little one does well for many years to come! :)

Sorry to hear about Sasha's heart murmur. Just follow what the vet says and remember your know your fur baby better than anyone. Patches was born with a heart murmur. he had the surgery and he is doing well. But Sasha's murmur is of a different kind. I also put my ear to his chest to listen, he thinks i'm a little nuts but we as mom's worry. She will be fine just follow the vet's advise.

I thank you all for your concern. Now Sasha thinks I'm nutz. I put my ear to her chest to check her heartbeat but I'm not really all that sure what I'm listening to. I think the heart is supposed to sound like "glub glub" or something like that. Anyway, she seems perfectly fine to me but I began to chart any little cough just to see if there's a pattern.

Hi Marilyn!

I am sending lots of love to you and Sasha. It sounds like her heart murmur is fairly manageable, thank goodness! I have a Chihuahua now but I used to have a Shih-Tzu mix, and she was on Lasix for congestive heart failure when I was a kid. It seems to be a pretty common medicine for various conditions in dogs, so I am sure Sasha will be A-OK!

Cal was diagnosed with the heart murmur several years before he had to be put on medicine. I am sure Sasha will do okay.

Hi YAFENELRA, I'm almost sure Lasix is the name of the meds that the vet mentioned. I was trying to remember what she said. I know it was a "people" medicine. I'll know more in 6 months or sooner if anything seems to be a problem for her. For now the vet doesn't suggest doing anything at all except watching her for any unusual symptoms.

One of my little Chi's developed heart trouble and wasalso on medication for quite a long time. When she started wheezing and sounding like she had a cold, she was put in a water pill and it helped. I don't recall how long it was that she was on meds. as it was a long time ago. Keep up with vet. appointments and keep the mes going. You will see Sasha maintain her health.

My shih tzu, Cal, had a heart murmur and was on medication for several years. In fact, he took the same thing that I did for my high blood pressure. LOL He did eventually develop a cough and I am still sorry I didn't get him on some lasix or something. He was 12 years old. Keep on top of it.

Hi Everybody,
Hope you enjoyed the holiday and are having nice weather.

Sasha, 11 years old, had her annual physical today and the vet said she was in good health except she discovered a heart murmur. She said to let her know if Sasha developed a "wet cough" that didn't go away. There is medicine that she can take if it gets worse. That would be something to do with the kidneys. I didn't ask too many questions because I was a little stunned to hear the news. If nothing happens in the meantime, we'll take her back for another exam in 6 months.

Marilyn
