I have 4 calendars. Paper, online and phone. I wish I could sync them all, but I do know writing it down physically helps me a lot. But the reminders in my online/phone are wonderful... if only someone would wave my paper calendar in front of my face! LOL

All the best,

I've taken to putting any new appointments into my phone. I tried writing them down on a note or letting them give me a card but I would lose either one. My phone I have yet to lose completely and I can set it to remind me before hand and the day of.

This is something that hasn't changed in the last 25 yrs post TBI, so I kind of doubt it will improve much in the next 25. It might even get some Sr elements added in my then. Hopefully not full blown Senile Dementia or Alzheimers. It is very hard for other family members to deal with watching the slow degradation even though some therapy advances have been made over the last 20 years.

When I have next appointments scheduled before I leave the office (including vet appts), I have them put the next appt on the bill or I do it as soon as I get it so I can get the information on my calendar at home so I will show up prepared and on time.

My doctor and I had a good laugh over my "list." Everything I want to remember goes on a list. Last time I saw her, I couldn't ask my questions because I forgot to make a list. This time I made the list, remembered to put it in my purse...and forgot to look at it. On the way out, she asked me about making a list and I started laughing and got it out of my purse for her to see. The good part about this blunder is that it has taken me 15 months to be able to laugh about something like this.

Yes, my frittata was sautéed potatoes, red peppers, onion and eggs over the top with thyme and damiana (seek this spice out from a Mexican store - very fruity wonderful taste - from the passion fruit family) for seasoning.

Honestly, this story now will be a forever laughter source, as the one woman was slightly shocked how the complete non cooked creation was magically done when she returned 4 minutes later (as I had directed her to get the rice on the plates, I quickly popped it into the microwave and then turned it to the crock pot). It was an inside joke between me and God how that "trust Him" got pulled off.

I am so glad your luncheon went so well. LOVE the crockpot solution! And frittata is one of my go-to menu items. I make mine with left over potatoes rather than bread... Hearty for the men... :)

Hugs to you my friend!

PS I am so glad you didn't slap. I have been in a slap mood lately, and um... have not as of yet (no promises though!).

Lol, I had a huge luncheon I did today and as I was getting things in order, two of my helpers keep being worry/panic mongers. One thing, ever since my aneurysm, I can deal with one thing at a time, but if multiple things get rolling it is like one of those wax writing boards that you had as a kid - lift the plastic and poof - all gone. So I would be working away and one of my fear mongers would come up to me and panic "the eggs aren't going to be cooked in time", my head would go poof and I would be lost in space. To my credit my solution was not to slap this person and yell - I must admit the idea was tempting. Helps to remember she was just trying to help.

My solution, PRAY about it aloud and then ever time the fear monger started in, just saying "trust God". It allowed me to not enter into the panic and that I had to solve it, rather just knowing with time all would sort out.

Can't say this would work for all situations, but sure worked well today - as did the crock pot liner that could be lifted out and put in the microwave.

I need to get mine ('03 Pick up) through inspection again. When it rains a lot the electrical systems have problems ... and it has been raining a lot here recently.

Well, it will get there and all will be OK, and now you will have it down for next time. I learn SO much from my mistakes!

I want to have the TIME to make a general list of all the 'stuff' I need to do, so I have like a MASTER LIFE LIST. I just never have the time to get it accomplished!

Good for you for getting your certificate renewed!!!

I recently had a pretty significant brain blunder, even though I thought I was taking steps to avoid it.

I had to renew my teaching license this month, and there was a huge checklist of things I needed to do, and a couple different addresses where I needed to mail things.

So, I made a post-it note checklist, and that helped with getting everything together, even if in the end, the state office of education ended up sending most of it back with their own sticky note saying in effect, "You don't need to send us all this stuff...and you forgot to include the licensing fee, so please send the two-page form and money."

In a way, it's good to learn from experience (this was my first time renewing), but on the other hand, emoticon I can't believe I forgot the money! That's, like, the most important thing. And I didn't even put it on my post-it? What was I (not) thinking?

Thanks for the great idea of a clear accordion file! I love that!

As for the rest of your note--I am really worried. About YOU.

ALL does NOT need to be accomplished in one week. The goodwill will still be there. The windows will still be there. I KNOW you are type A, and love you for it, but you do not need to be the hero here.

Lately my life has been on overload and it jumps my brain into a paralyzing frustration free fall. All the portals to going forward get locked down and I am completely stuck.

For example I feel slow and can't think so I think get some coffee, but then can't find my glasses, but then in looking for them I find my keys, but still can't find my glasses..so I decide to start a load of laundry while I'm stuck at home only to find a load that i forgot to switch to the drier three days ago and must rewash because it smells stale. I go back upstairs and find my glasses on the banister ledge (like they should be) and just as I feel waves of relief, I can no longer find the keys that I just had in my hands before going downstairs. Yes I've tried to have exact locations for things and repeatative backups, but on days like this all those spots are empty and suddenly my mind does a complete brain dump because nothing is in order and I panic over how much my life is out of control.

I've got a lot done over the last 4 weeks despite my father dying, my mother breaking her hip, my 3 friend's parents passing, having a friend dying of ovarian cancer, another still being in the process of being worked up for something, cleaning out my parent' s of my dad's stuff before my mom came home.....

Here is what has been helping me adapt. First I've been getting up earlier and spending 30 minutes reading...it is like a relaxed way to warm up my mental engines. Then I assemble all my tools in one spot (keys, glasses, purse, to do file folder, coat, and any coupons paperwork that I might need for the day). If I can't find something I let myself know I have plenty of time to sort it out. While showering, eating breakfast and doing the dishes I can review the past day and then it normally feels easy to find a missing item. I general assemble things in the open as out of sight out of mind is so true.

The file folder (plastic accordion folder) has been very key to settle my mind with so much to do. The front is clear plastic, so I keep my to do list right in front where I can see it. Each project for the day gets a separate divider. If I get blocked by working on one thing the folder is a great reminder of other things to being doing well my mind is settling down on the other item.

I've had some major blunders...slipping on timelines or double booking myself. I've been repeating to myself "I will survive and I am only one person". Much of this is about self forgiveness and being real. We are still amazing people, it is just that our priorities from time to time get scrambled and other people may view our exterior selves to be fine -- while we are completely aware that the smiling face is only a mask for the frustrated chaos inside. So what?! We just do what we can when we can. We learn to put more back ups in our lives. In the end there will still be minutes of blank frustration -- and maybe that is a good reminder to take a time out, refocus, let your brain reset itself and start again. The world is on one timeline - people that have experienced challenges to their brain on another - and maybe our greatest gift to the world is reminding others that there is joy in taking a break for your brain. Go forth and blunder with joy in your hearts!
Off to change the wash to the drier before it gets its third cleaning. Thank goodness I belong to a community that won't condemn my imperfection. Off to happily blunder through the rest of the week. A good week and hugs to all.

I don't track food mostly because I can't figure out how to get my choices in instead of all of the stuff I don't tolerate well or dislike.

I don't carry a purse, it can be hard to loose even if it is way too heavy for me to even consider trying to lift it manually. I can usually find it where I left it parked anyway. I just carry in a couple of things I will need and then put them back when I am done so I well be able to find them the next time I need them.

I actually do record all my food but I only record my morning exercises (walking, yoga & weights), mowing the yard (when I do it) and sometimes I'll include pulling weeds in the garden.

I also have a note pad by my computer moniter that I keep track of how long my morning walk was, how many fruits & veggies I eat and how much water I have drank. That seems to help me the most, especially with the fruit & veggie. I can just look and see I've only had 2 so far for the day or I've already had 5 and going for more :-)

Do you record everything you eat, or your calories?
Do you record every movement and workout you do?

Most of the time, I use a smilie face on my calendar--it takes so long for me to record everything... I need a better way...

I was always known as the one who would lose her keys and panic! I try to wear jeans that have pockets and carry my car keys and other important keys on a hook on my jeans key chain that makes it very easy to find. It also jingles so I know I still have them! I always carry a calendar to write down my social events, doctor's/dentist's visits, etc. I also carry a little notebook to write things down I want to remember for later. If I do forget something I say it must be the weather or I didn't sleep well last night and nobody questions that!!!

PS I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE COFFEE. But sometimes I am in a place that either serves REALLY icky coffee OR I don't want to dole out the cash for the good stuff. I have a little bag that I also keep that has tea bags of my FAVORITES that are a good substitute for my JAVA FIX.

I have to explain this... I was a VERY organized person prior to my brain injury--in fact I was a Pro Organizer. But I learned these tricks (and some of the humor) by an author named Emilie Barnes. If you need to chink away at chaos she is a truly fine teacher. Her books are GREAT.

One thing I learned a LONG time ago--is to use small bags to categorize items. Such as:
Make up, obvious but not often done!
Coins, Our mothers really did know best
etc.... oh, sewing stuff (in case you want to make a blouse while waiting in the checkout -grin)
Camera
I have a little bag for my ipod (to keep it happy and snuggly)

I also carry a little tablet and pen (or my big 'book' which has my calendar and stuff). This I don't carry into places often with me... But I do carry it out with me-as I need it sometimes for reminders.

I just came back from a LONG trip. I put a 'suitcase road map' in my calendar. Little post its to remind me which bag held what items... Helped a lot!
I also keep a basket in my CAR with a couple of bottles of water, a granola type bar or two, in case I need a food fix and drive thru is dangerous (grinning).

I lose stuff ALL the time. My GLASSES. I have cheapies around the house.

Good Luck and reduce the junk in your bag!!! Don't hurt your back!!!!

All the best,
Barb G

Thanks for suggestion of not carrying the checkbook in my purse...(I rarely write a check)....since I wrote the previous note I have lost the cash card and I figure it is at home as no one else has charged anything. I did finally report it missing and the bank will send me a new one....

I get so frustrated cause it seems I keep losing the same things over and over....sometimes they are in my purse and I just can't find them in there until I dump out my purse at home.....

Once my daughter was shopping with me and I had to dump out my purse in the car...and her comment was, "Mom, you're such a junk show!!!" I guess I am not a well organized person....you should see my pile of papers next to my recliner where I spend a lot of time.

P.S. I keep losing so many things in my purse I have started having dreams of losing my purse, but I haven't done that yet...I think it is too big to forget...It is so heavy with important papers I drag around I feel like using my walker to carry my purse as I think it is over 10 lbs and I have a 10 lb lifting restriction from my hand surgeon.....

RE your checkbook...
What if you kept just the (urg--aphasia--cannot think of the name) the write it down 'thingy' in your bag... if you don't write a lot of checks. It is REALLY dangerous to carry a lot of checks with you anyway... AND be sure you are using a GEL pen when writing checks.
Some banks give out a small 'write down thingy' for your debit card to keep track of purchases.

All this from the woman who loses the purse itself -- when hanging out with the grandkids--but I never have lost or forgotten the kids!!! :)

I used to lose my keys all the time and now I keep them in my pocket of my jacket.

Lately I have been losing my checkbook every day and sometimes twice a day. My purse is large and I have decided to put important things in the large zippered outer pocket and hope that will help. I have a small "purse" inside my purse for all my medications I have to carry with me. If anyone has any suggestions about not losing my check book let me know as it is driving me bonkers. I like to carry it with me so when I use the cash card I can keep track of the purchases I make so I know my balance. emoticon

DH has those loss of memory lapses too. Sometimes he can remember alot and then the next minute nothing.

I write down my cell phone number and put it right next to the bed, couch or wherever he is at the time. I made him dial my phone too so he can see how the phone works.

I have papers laying everywhere in the house with instructions for him in how to do things, but I also noticed that I use them more often than not.

Sometimes you just have to smile, pretend everything is okay, hold back the tears and just walk away.

HMMM.... Never got the answer to put it up... But maybe I can sort of think through it and get it up for us...in my own words/way. Sorry for the delay.

ONE SOLUTION FROM ME:
Sure, use your cool new tools... Ipad/Iphone/smart phone/etc...
But don't forget the old school backup. Most of all is MEMORY is your downfall!

My first experience with this, was right out of the hospital. First accident, and I was able to put ALL my info into my PDA (before smart phones). I was SOOOOOOOOOOO proud. Felt I could handle anything...
Well, one thing I learned was is that healing is not always consistent, and neither are my actions. I honestly cannot recall when this happened, but it seems to me it was not far from the return home... I was like an addict with a point to make--ha! Well, somewhere, I plugged in the PDA, put in the info and walked away... used it a couple of times (feeling SO superior) and plugged it back in(for backup, of course, since I was SO supercharged). I dunno what I did!!! I remember KNOWING I had screwed up. I remember (since I have continued to have that EMPTY feeling every time I screw up since then...) knowing that whatever it was I had done, it was gone... forever. Off computer, off PDA, off my brain, all of it. We tried to retrieve it. Even the engineering dept. here (son and hubs are both brainiacs) tried... Gone. Dead.

Truth is, there are very few passwords I remember. I do not remember my children's phone numbers. I can remember the number where my son-in-law works in ATL, but it is super easy...

Recently, after a bout with a paint can, and then a good dose of H20 mixed with pasture mud (nice DEEP puddle) my phone began to slip... I knew it was on the way out...but I forgot...to write down many of the numbers. I had lost my phone cord to the computer, for my back up. Well, it all went away one morning! AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

Well, I did pull out the sym card, and the battery. My hubs sent the old phone back (with the memory card we both forgot about!). I got a refurbished phone (in the BLUE I really wanted) and hubs found a cord for me--to hook up (very valuable by the way, as they charge the phone too!!!).

Most of the numbers I still had to reload from--my old school address book. But at least this phone seems to be holding them! Some are gone forever.

I keep a skinny little address book with all my infos. It goes in my big girl planner. I hate carrying my big girl planner... but I do NOT trust my teeny weeny little phone OR MY BRAIN to do it all. So, I use back up--paper AND digital. At least I carry reusable shopping bags!!! hahahahahaha

emoticon

All the best,
Barb G
