I'm starting to get excited - I've always loved reading and been good at writing (papers for school, etc) but never believed I could REALLY be a writer. Well I finally decided to go for it about 6 months ago and immediately had a story idea. On days I didn't feel inspired I would "study" writing books and I love The Writer magazine, and throughout the course of "studying" of course more ideas and clarity would come to me. ( I realize the process of writing a book could take me years, I'm okay with that) Recently I found out a friend has been writing so I "outed" my writer alter ego to her (haven't told many people I'm writing yet) and ever since then I've been so motivated and inspired, I've been working on my story more.

A few days ago I was trying to figure out the villain and what the big picture was that they were fighting for, so I pictured him reflecting/plotting in his study and started writing from his POV and a seemingly few minutes and 1000 words later the whole big idea of the book suddenly took shape and became clear - it was awesome. And the best part? When I reread it a few days later I still loved it. :)

My point is that I'm excited that I am showing myself that I CAN do this and that I AM a writer. I just needed to stop telling myself I wasn't. :)

Katie

Not only did I write today, but I finished a first draft! It's gonna need a lot of editing, but it's all down! Now the question is, which of my WIP's am I going to focus on next.

I've just been writing lately. Over 250 words a day, every day this month so far. Right now I almost have a fantasy short story done but also working on a couple romance/erotica ones for writing.com challenges. I'll do more writing in March even though I'm editing because I'm in a challenge where we have to write a story a week that is romance or erotica in March, April and May. Progress being made but much more left to achieve.

A couple of weeks ago, a character came to me. She's a "cleaner" to the supernatural (Vampire, werewolf, ghost, witch doctor, etc.) community. She used to work legitimate crime scene cleanup when she stumbled upon a vampire trying to scrub all supernatural evidence from a scene and was recruited to help them cover up their existance.

She's also a single woman in her 30s with a younger sister, married with 3 kids, who worries she's not ever going to settle down and be "happy" so she's constantly pushing her to get out and find "Mr. Right."

She has been taking up a lot of space in my head lately, so last night, I just gave her free reign and came up with a story about stolen Nazi gold coins, and the world's worst blind date all wrapped into one. And she is so much fun to write. I just let my inner snarkiness go to town.

One exchange from the WIP:

"You must be Nick," I said, offering my hand, which he took. He tried to pull my hand toward his face like he was going to kiss it, but I resisted, and it turned into a half-hearted hand-shake.
"Nick Summers," he said. "And you're Natalie. David has shown me pictures of you on his phone. They don't do you justice."
"Well, I should hope not. David's phone take crap pictures... I mean... Thank you?" Well, this is going well.

Done a few things since my last post. Finished other story and sent to... Daily Science Fiction. Also completed two erotica stories for things on the writing web site I help moderate. Starting an attempt at a fantasy story. Focused so much on sci-fi lately but it's nice to get back to my preferred genre.

Sounds neat. I haven't submitted anything to Daily Science Fiction yet but it's on my list of places. I submitted once to Flash Fiction Online but it was back in 2009, so long time ago. Got a rejection letter from Apex yesterday. I'm trying to get a story finished to send to Lightspeed but we'll see how it goes.

Anyways, western and robots... sounds interesting. :-)

My newest project is a series of stories all set in the same world.

The setting is the Western US about 100 years after a nuclear war basically destroyed the world. There's a mix of futuristic technology with old west standards like six-shooters and horse rustlers, but with robot security.

I've written a flash piece in the setting that I'm hoping to sell to a pro market like Flash Fiction Online or Daily Science Fiction, and I've got a slightly longer piece with a woman rancher trying to find her kidnapped daughter in the ruins of Las Vegas.

I finished the one sci-fi rough draft earlier today. Also got more written on a different sci-fi story that I hope to finish the rough draft either tomorrow or the next day. But made progress, so that is good.

Yay for writing on any day.

I did a tiny bit last night. Got 250 words on a new story that I have no idea where it's going... yeah. Anyways, I have a few hours before work, hopefully I can write some today.

The trick is to not feel guilty about what you didn't do but to use it s reason to work on something today. There are days where we don't work on anything and that's okay. Just if we want to get it done, then we need to try and find time to work on our projects. Doesn't have to be every day.

The last couple of days I've only written 250-500 words and two of them were done around midnight just to say I'd written something that day. They are rough but I got words down that I can later fix on a day i don't work.

I also make goals all the time, for month and sometimes for week, and often times I don't reach my goals. If I don't, I access the fact and then move on to consider my next set of goals and what I can work on next.

Today, I won't work on writing much as I have to finish something I committed to a while ago for a group, but that's okay. Tomorrow I work only 4 hours and I'll get to short story editing then.

It is small compared to the 170k novel in progress, but it is large when looking at short stories. Technically the place I'm sending it to considers anything 7500-17500 words to be a novelette. Below that is called short story.

One of the ones I have out is just under 3,000 words long.

Good luck with your computer. I need a new battery on mine and a new power chord...

I'm still working on the fantasy story. It's now up to 9000 words and I'm trying to decide if another scene is needed but hope to have it sent out next week.

Do it! DO IT!!! :)

Last night I connected my laptop to an external monitor because when I turned it on over the weekend, I got a black circle toward the bottom of my screen, and the rest of the screen was white with blue lines. Talk about freaking out! Thankfully my computer friends told me it was just the monitor. *whew* I'll be getting a new computer soon, regardless. Yikes.

Last night I stayed up till after 1 am editing an old fantasy story that I want to submit to Writers of the Future. It's long enough, which is great and needs a tad more description, but... it's elves. So, it will be a hard sell anywhere. But I'm going to try anyways.

Today I'm working on romance story.

A little and as for the 15 minutes, that depends. During nanowrimo we would do writing sprints and I can get like 800 words done in 15 minutes at times. ;-) But whatever works for each writer is what is best for them.

I've got a few stories in progress, so always something to work on.

yeah, 15 minutes is too little. But if that's all you have time for in one sitting, that's okay. I meant write for 15, then take a five minute break, then write again.

Myrea, that sounds neat! I set my clock timer sometimes, but software that does it for you? Bring it ON!

This is the productivity goldmine I stumbled onto. I now use it both for work in the office and for writing.

Basically - work 25 minutes, take a 5 minute break. Do that four times then take a longer break. Repeat until done.

There's more to it than that, if you really get into it. You're supposed to measure tasks by "blocks" and set the number of blocks ahead of time, but even just doing the basic 25/5 blocks 3-5 at a time has made a huge difference in not only my work, but in my free time as well.

Yeah at first I was thinking about that....but I did 15 minutes each day for like 3 1/2 months and it kind of felt like too little.....I feel like the 2 hours is actually working because I can physically SEE a lot of progress which is important when you're doing a drawing....I have so much more energy now that I'm working....

You can do it, Asarick! You might want to think about doing it in increments - set a timer for half an hour and work work work during that time! After it goes off, stretch, get some water, play with your dog, then sit down and do it again. It's not as intimidating that way.

Hi,

I'm new to the Writer's Support group on Spark People and I would just like to find someone to be accountable to for working for 2 hours a day on my graphic novel that I have put off for a month due to finishing my BFA in Visual Art at University.

Thanks for the support and this is a great site....lucky to have this and unexpected on a weight loss site too but the two are interlinked as Julia Cameron author of "The Artist's Way" discovered when she wrote "The Writing Diet."

I'm doing NaNoWriMo again this year. Having a buddy who is acting as "Preeminent Nagger" really helps the motivation! So far, I've reached 5,880 words, which is above the daily word count goal. Now, I just need to keep up that trend! emoticon It's also nice to see an idea I've had swirling around in my head, finally make it to the screen. The goal is to have this piece published by this time next year!

Persistence, Creativity, Freedom, Joy, Gratitude, Love. These are the things that motivate a healthy lifestyle.

No, and I'm getting uptight -- I'm doing NaNoWriMo, and I didn't write anything today -- my day got taken up with a number of other things. I should be at ~3000 words, and I'm at about1200.

Sigh. This always happens to me -- I get behind in the first few days and I never manage to catch up again....

Found out about a fiction short story contest 2 days ago but the deadline was today. I definitely would have preferred more time, but on one hand I'm sort of glad it was a sit down and write edit write submit experience. It doesn't matter if I win, it really gave me a confidence boost and I had fun! Just finished submitting it - 8 hours before deadline.

Hello,

The poetry reading was great. These always inspire me. We heard from Seven poets, all of varied styles and interests. One member was ninety-two years young and all was delightful.

If any of you have the opportunity to attend such a group, do for it will help in your own writing, be it poetry or prose..

Later...and keep writing! Doris emoticon

Just finished writing a new blog. (ScribblersAlley.com.) Hard to do after a day's work. Finally finished all the little things I've been using to put of actual writing on my books. Tomorrow I want to go to a religious bookstore and check out some publishers of books that look similar to mine. I have some ideas from Writers Market, but it helps to actually see some of their products. So Saturday night or Sunday I'll get back on track with actual writing. Whew!

Reading other people's work today (from my writing group) which always improves my craft and gets me thinking. Also doing some organizing of writing files. I did journal this morning, a good sign I am getting back on my writing track.

Toni, I'm with you. I'm about 30 pages from the end of my final read-through before it goes to beta readers and then my editor. *bites nails*

For those who want to use Kindles on their PCs - you have to download the Kindle app. I have a Kindle so I haven't done it, but it should be too hard to figure out from there. And while I'd love to read your story, Doris, I have my own deadlines and critiques to do and a huge TBR pile to deal with. I hope you find many readers!

Thanks so much for asking. I am writing an essay, just a first draft (comes after s---- first draft, modestly s----- first draft) on a memoir piece about my maternal aunt, 96. I got it done! The deadline is my writing group that meets once a month. When I keep that deadline, I keep others and keep writing.

What are you working on?

Writing has felt "up hill" for a few days, with a deadline looming. I hope to break the cycle today and get it done.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I did not know you could do Kindle that way. I'll see what I can do.

Lydia...
Most people do not seem to know that the Kindle is available on their computer for FREE.
Just assess Kindle and you will follow the steps easily.

I have a Kindle on mine and many of the books are free, especially the classics..
Others can be read in part to see if you wish to pay for them..

I put a price on mine. I felt that it demeaned a novel to place the price of $1.99 on it, although
I realize I might have more readers. I value my work for it took me hundreds of hours to produce what I think is a literary novel.. If you should read it, please let me know and give me a feedback.
I do have a five star rating right now...
Thanks, Doris

Okay, one of these days I'll figure out how all this works--just not today.
I just posted a new entry on my blog and invite you all to check it out. I'd love for you to check the "follow" button. And yeah, the name you will see there is not the same as the name you see here. I'm practicing to be famous! See ScribblersAlley.com.

I'd love to read your book, but I don't have Kindle. Let me know if it is available another way.
