So why is it we always bowl better when we are not bowling on a league night? I took the kids bowling today. We had fun and this was my scores.
137/136/127
Why can't I do that when it counts?

BUNCOLADY63--I used to bowl on a ladies Wed. night league where we had a gift exchange like you mentioned. There were a couple of years I'd get the booby prize b/c I never could bowl a strike. The exchange and food was fun though.

My ave. is 131. My first 2 games were alright with 158 and 132, but then I started leaving splits--6-7-10. I almost picked one of them up--almost. My future daughter-in-law tried using my ball b/c she wasn't getting anything with hers. She started getting spares and was doing pretty good. Of course, I was doing worse so I switched balls. I left 4-6-7-10 split. I bowled a 112. Well, I got my average and we took 3 out of 4 games. We also had a pot luck. I ate some during first game. I folded up my dessert to take home. So I didn't overeat.

Had our League Christmas Party last night. We all bought gifts and put them in a pile. When you got your first stike you got to pick a gift. Lots of fun and great food & gifts.
I did ok. Bowled at 167, 131, 135. Getting a little more consistent with the 139 average.

Well my team had to use my avearge minus 10 last night. I just couldn't make it. I started to get sick in the middle of my bus run and that was a job if in self not to get sick with a bus full of kids and to make all there stops. I did it and got myself home before I gor real bad. After laying down for an hour I was going to try to bowl but I could barely stand let alone try to pick up my ball and toss it down the ally.

I used my green Machine ball tonight. I haven't used it for over a season. It's a fairly straight ball. It felt a little heavier than my plastic ball that I use for spares. I got a few strikes with the Machine. When I tried to use the other for spares, I couldn't do it, so I stayed with the Machine. The first 2 games were lousy considering the I didn't have a lot of splits--113 and 120. The last game I went back to the plastic--156. We only took one game. We lost the over-all by 2 pins.

I've been bowling with a split thumbnail on my bowling hand. I put tape on it and use a house ball. My ave. is 130--I bowled 122, 128 and 155. The first house ball I used hooked or spun a lot. It hurt my fingers. The second one I tried--the finger holes were too big and the hand span too wide--I was afraid of dropping the ball. I can't wait till the nail is grown out.

At work last Tues., I split my thumbnail in half. It was on my bowling hand on bowling night. It was sensitive just touching the end of my thumb. I knew I'd never be able to bowl with my balls so I used a houe ball. My ave. is 135. I bowled a 118, 138 and 155. I did better with a split nail. Just like when I broke my wrist--that's when I bowled a 200-game. It was funny watching the house ball go down the lane--it spun around like a top instead up and over.

Good for you! You deserve a big pat on the back for that weight loss!
My bowling scores are still up and down. Didn't even make my mid 400 series last Monday. Last game was good as I finally figured out I was turning slightly at the throw. Too bad it took me 2 games to figure it out.

123 average. Bowled 114, 136, 106. Not bad for the first night back never touched the ball all summer. The best thing of the night was the comments I received on my weight loss.

that is interesting...

And I think we all have had some experience with this, with weekly broken down lanes, and poor care of lanes and equipment at some of the bowling alleys we bowl at.

Good to know, sometimes it is just not us, and that we can sometimes blame the lanes. :-)

Sometimes a center is known as a 10-pin center only because of the amount of 10 pins bowlers leave. I just re-read a past issue of a bowling magazine that explained that often the center maintenance isn't what it should be.

Consequently, the pin deck side boards are loose, causing weak 10s where the 6 just lays in the gutter. This doesn't negate needing to make adjustments, often a combination of them to find some way to get a few 10s to fall.

Making spares in these situations is of paramount importance.

It is funny when you see the same trend by a majority of the bowlers on a set of lanes. It is interesting since you know that none of you throw the ball exactly the same. We had a similar experience with splits a couple weeks ago, it seemed as though we were all leaving them no matter what we did. Good thing that you were able to make some. I remember spending a summer where I would spend time every time I practiced trying for the ten pin, regardless of what pins were up. It did help me a lot, I am pretty consistent with them now.

Well, hopefully next time you don't have to struggle with that silly ten pin. GOOD LUCK!

About those 10-pins--I moved up and back and a little to the left, and I still got them. That's okay. The guy were we bowling against, he was leaving them too. A couple of lanes down from us, these guys were watching and betted that our opponent would get the 10-pin, and he did. These guys would laugh. It couldn't be helped. At least I picked up a few of mine.

a few ten pins, but not too many. Someone once told me that if you are struggling with ten pins, you need to move your feet back a little or up a little, and it will help. I usually try to move back on the lane an inch or so; sometimes it is all about making the right adjustments. I actually switched balls between the first and second game which is something I typically don't do, and it was the right adjustment for me tonight. Will it work next week, more than likely not. But that is one of the things I like about bowling, is that challenge of figuring out what to do to bowl the best you can.

The funny thing about my third game is that I opened in the ninth and tenth frame and still bowled a 192, just got tired and didn't make the right adjustment for those two frames.

Well, I hope the advice helps with the ten pins, I know how frustrating those can be.

It's gotten so bad that I think I'll check out an alley I heard re-opened. I don't know who owns the place, but its very small. In the wintertime, it'll be hard to find parking spaces. It will be worth it if this other place has good upkeep and I won't have to freeze to death.

Our alley was cold too! I didn't even bring a jacket so was very uncomfortable. Most of the other ladies had on long sleeves and some were bowling with jackets on! We asked them to turn the ceiling fans & AC off, but they said no! It was in the 50's outside.
Bowling is still not consistent. 126,144,126. Average is down to a 136.
Have a great day.

The bowling alley was very cold AGAIN tonight. I was wearing 2 or 3 layers all night. One woman complained. The manager said she usually freezes in there, so she goes to their backroom. They always have both a/c and ceiling fans go full blast. Anyways, I kept leaving the 10-pin again. I tried the finger adjustment, and it helped a little. Then I started leaving splits. Scores--129, 135, 113--sucky.

Now you have a small sense of what the pros go through. They often bowl 16 or more games a day for several days. Hope your cramps go away before Friday. :) -- Lou

Good Job!

We bowled last night and the other team was a no show! We won all 4 games even bowling below our averages. Due to last week bowling I ended up with a 149 average, which I brought down this week. Ended up with a 129, 141, 146. Floor was really sticky last night and machines kept breaking down.

I apologize for posting my Friday scores on Tuesday, but I bout forgot... 159, 136, 136. For a 431~ Last year I couldn't hit a 400!!! I love my new equipment, and my new skills!

I have a 113 average and bowl like that too... Unconsistently... But you hit your average every time and that was a 192 you bowled so good for you!

I wish I could be a more consistent bowler. I had a great night on Monday. Bowled a 192, 139, 153, with a 137 average. There are some nights I have to fight to break a 100.

Nice idea. Thanks. Congratulations on being over average each game. Remember to make each shot the best one you can. Try to hit the head-pin consistently and convert your spares and watch your average soar. -- Lou

Friday night I had a series of 377. I can't remember the games, but my average is 113, and I was above every game :)
