Hi everyone this is all new to me. I wasnt told to check my sugars or anything like that but do have to see a DR every 3 months to have my A1C checked. I do have a monitor at home though from when I had Gestational Diabetes so Today I started doing that just so I know what I should and shouldnt eat until I meet with my Health Coach. If any one has any suggestions on Healthy meals and good exercises I'd be open to trying anything to get these extra 30 lbs off to hopefully get back to normal. Hope everyone has a great day :)

This is all new to me. I was just diagnosed in June. I thought I was eating pretty healthy and I climbed to 6.7 A1C. So I guess weight and stress does it for me. I would love to loose 30 pounds that is I think everything else will fall into place. More workouts ill help me reach my goal. .

That's wonderful! I only had to be on it for about 6 months (a very low dose I think) because I started losing weight (before) and I added cinnamon, coconut oil to my diet and made a few other diet changes. I have been able to keep my A1c under 6.2 for 4 years now. I'm concerned though... I go for blood work tomorrow, and I'm concerned that I've gone off of a healthy diet for the past year and afraid my numbers might not be so good. I only got back to SP and watching what I eat, just this past month... wish me luck!

I did have to go on a medication cause I'm having trouble keeping the morning numbers down and they are concerned it will hurt the baby. I'm doing well with diet and exercise. Thanks to all who send me ideas on what to eat. It has helped.

I did really well with the thanksgiving dinner, and I was pleasantly surprised that an hour after I was at 130 and at the 2 hr mark at 110. I thought it would be a lot higher. Now I need to figure out why by looking at everything I ate. I didn't have any large portions except the meats. I will be looking closer at it as I am struggling with what I can have for dinner without raising it too high.

I have been making a habit of checking in everyday and didn't want to blow the streak that I have going so far. Most people had their thanksgiving dinner yesterday. we are having ours today so that everyone could come. I'm still deciding if I'm going to take my numbers an hour after dinner. I already know its going to be high and then their is also the chance I will forget with everyone being here. I will drink lots of water today. Thanks to all who are here.

I did alright today. Not where I want to be and not where the doc wants me but I'm learning. My highest today was 144 after breakfast. So it looks like I need to work on breakfast ,lunch and dinner. My snacks seem to be right around the right number or at least only like 5 over and my second snack is right on. They want me to have a third snack. I don't know that I will be able to as during the work week I run out of time and go to bed super early so I can get up early for work. I can have one tonight though and will spend some time this weekend trying to develop a plan. I just found a mix and match plan on here and look forward to using it.

Totally. Yes. I did this. I didn't even know I was doing this. Thankfully if I can get a hold of it now, I can make it go away. Its not to late. Today I went to the diabetic class and learned how to use my glucometer. Wow my fingers are going to not like me for a while. They want me to do it upon awaking and then after each meal and before bed. It was 160 an hour after dinner. They want it below 120. I think it was the juice I had. So NO JUICE. We will see about tomorrow. This should help learn what I can eat and not eat. I like some of the tips I've been getting from others though about bitter foods bringing it down. something else to try. ha-ha.

I so agree with you about having to think to much about what I'm eating, it makes me get depressed knowing I did this to myself & I'm the only one that can change it.

Be the best you can be every day!

Had a potluck at work. Did well to not overeat and to only take a tiny portion of all. Eating today was ok but due to my constant worry over it, it wasn't as enjoyable and I know that I should be able to enjoy what I put in my body. Bad mood most of day. Looking forward to tomorrow being better.

A little scared about how to check my glucose levels. I get the class on it next week so I'm trying to not think it to death until then. Still have this sickness but thankfully the cough is almost gone. I'm really looking forward to the cough being gone so I can start my walking again. I did have a healthy dinner and am working toward understanding good eating habits. So glad I have help now. Hope everyone has a good night.

Went to the chiropractor today and found out my hip pain is from a muscle that goes from my tail bone to the hip bone. Told to not do my walking for a couple of days. Maybe I'll try some of the seated cardio videos here.

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

MAZZYQ - that's awesome!!! i read somewhere that apple cider vinegar is good for preventing insulin spikes and to add it to food. I believe food is nature's best medicine if we know where to look. Keep up the good work!

hi everybody, i have tell some one

i took my blood sugar readings this morning i was 128 which is good and just now it was 99 which is even better. I know some people will think this is nuts, but i've been making a drink using apple cider vinegar and cinnamon, ginger, honey , apple juice and water, now for a week and last thursday my fasting morning count was 147. I did check with my doctor before starting this and he said it was ok to try it. he said it may work and it may not- either way no harm done. I think it may be working. my numbers haven't been this low in months

this past week focused on staying within carb range and i did fairly well, although some days my food choices could've been better.

also started a walk/jog prog on spark and added some strength training since I read it helps the body remain sensitive to the hormone insulin, which is vital for keeping blood sugar levels in check.

enough about me, how's everyone else doing??

I like to eat Yoplait Lite with two spoons of Grape Nuts in it for breakfast...usually after 9 AM and my one cup of morning coffee. Thanks for the info re. fiber.

I live 15 miles outside of North Little Rock. One thing that I learned but had never heard before is lets say your lunch is 30 carbs and in that meal whatever you are having has 5 grams of fiber. You can take those 5 grams of fiber and subtract from the 30 carbs so you had a meal with only 25 carbs. Bottom line is eat things with lots of fiber and minimize the white bread, rice and potatoes. You can still eat whatever you want pretty much but the things on the bad list just eat a smaller portion and fill up on the salads and meats. Not being able to exercise is not helping matters but I am determined to lose my unwanted lbs and get off the borderline and back into the good. I know it is all about choices and I don't want to be one of those people who live to eat. I just want to eat to live a long productive life. I retired from AT&T and I want to enjoy my retirement and I know you feel the same. Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi and thank you. I need all the help I can get. It has been very helpful have the page to list my food and see what I am eating (carbs, protein, calories, etc) And yes, you are correct, I find if it taste good....spit it out emoticon I am sure it is difficult for you to exercise if in a wheel chair. I live in South Arkansas.

Achorne721, I have pretty well discovered the secret to what is right to eat and not. If it is something I like then it not on the list of foods and I should avoid. Amount of carbs for a woman for each meal is 30 to 45. just before going to bed eat something with some protein so you will have something in your tummy and you liver will not work overtime but no more that 15 carbs. These are a few of the things I learned from a nutritionist at the hospital.

This is my second time to post on this page. I too am from Arkansas. I do so relate to the recent posts of being confused after recently being told I am pre-diabetic. I am 69 and need to lose at least 15 pounds (says the doctor), I say I need to lose 25#

I have begun walking and machine exercises. I am blessed to have all the equipment at our church. I also have trouble figuring out the healthy foods for diabetics. I have eaten healthy for years...fish, chicken until should grow feathers, I drink lots of water, etc. My main goal is to lower my carbs and exercise MORE !!!

The perfect prayer..."Thy will be done."

Hi, Lemoncheesecake,

I have been told I am pre-diabetic as well and I find the hardest part is making the right choices when we go out to eat. If I know in advance where we are going I pull up a menu online with nutrition info and hope that I have enough will power when I get there to order the right thing. I want to say I am ordering (good for me items) but bring me what I really want which is not good for me. My husband is also pre-diabetic and is in the denial stage. I guess he is going to learn the hard way. At least I can cook healthy and he has to eat it when at home.

Good morning team. Just checking in. Last year I was told I was pre-diabetic and I joined this team. Two weeks ago I had blood work done and my numbers were still in the pre-diabetic range. I have to work on better food choices more consistently. Have a great day team!!!

Welcome to the team, Freckles! You'll find there are lots of good articles on SparkPeople about nutrition and diabetes. And good luck with your garden this year -- so fun!

I loved the "Golden Rule" that was on our childhood rulers back in the 50s. It's as important today as it was back then:
Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Ten things about myself.
1. I live in Arkansas and have lived here all my life.
2. My husband of 5 years who is Canadian was told he might becoming diabetic
3. He is on metformin twice a day, however, we suspect that the nerve blocker drug his surgeon put him on after back surgery 6 weeks ago is causing the problem.
4. However, while he is checking his blood sugar I decided to check mine and darn if it was not high at 213
5. This means I have to get serious about losing at least 15 lbs and try my best to make wise food choices.
6. I know exercise is a key element in keeping blood sugar down but I am in a wheelchair since the age of 2 so that makes exercise moderate at best.
7. I need a support group that will hold my hand or kick me in the butt.
8. I am going to nutrition meets with my husband through a local hospital to learn as much as I can.
9. Going out to eat is something we enjoy doing together and I need to learn wise choices not let the pictures guide me.
10. Love animals with 3 cats and a beagle pup who rules the world. Also love working in the yard and can't wait to really get here and get some veggies in the ground.

After having blood tests because I was so weary, lethargic and breathless , I have been told I am pre-diabetic fasting blood sample reading is 6.9. All other organs ie. heart, lungs etc. are functioning fine. I was given advise on a healthy diet , which I follow normally anyway. I could do with losing 1st..I was also given a magazine and told I would be monitored, I will be sent for in 3 months. ...and now I just feel confused and abandoned. At 64 my life is going through a lot of adjustment as it is and I don't know what to do first. loose weight, go carb free, ,low carb . should I be testing my sugar levels., how much exercise. lots of questions.
I want to get back up there to my usual mover shaker mode but having a job moving and shaking myself, still not feeling to crash hot . Thanks for reading. I am reminding myself of Ey
ore. lol

PJ, don't get discouraged! The scale is often not the best indicator of the progress you are making. There are many factors that affect your weight, some don't really seem to make any sense. Also, sounds like you are pushing pretty hard toward your goal, with your multiple weekly workouts, remember, muscle weighs more than fat. As your body composition changes, replacing fat with muscle, it can actually cause you gain weight.

A sure fire indicator that your efforts are being successful is to take body measurements, chest, waist, thighs, etc., track them over time. As you become more lean your body measurements will bear evidence of your progress. Don't get discouraged, you can't help but succeed with all that your are doing.

Right now I am just so frustrated! I have been counting carbs, eating fish, stepping up my workouts to 5 times a week, doing interval training, and I have just gained a pound! I could just scream! I hardly ever eat any sugar, and when I do I count it, I try to only eat when I am hungry - I don't know what else to do!!! As soon as my phone charges up (so I can listen to music) I am off to the gym again....having a not so good day...

Health is a great freedom

"RESULTS START WHEN YOU START & REMAIN CONSISTENT"....

Time for some REAL TALK!!

I was thinking yesterday, I met with a personal trainer to discuss my goals. Just as a jump start, she asked me "What has stopped you from losing this weight & how many times have to tried to lose weight in the past 5 years?" Well when I thought about it, I was just like "Ummmmm.. probably over 8 times, heck really maybe more than that too many times to count honestly".. I realize my problem has been that I START but NEVER remain consistent!!!

I mean we all say "Monday is the day" or "Next week I'll begin" or "Just 1 last weekend"... I realize that I've used those excuses 1 too many times that Now I'm "240 pounds of just I'll Start on Monday" "240 pounds of just 1 more Weekend"... I realize that Now is My time!!! I can't keep pushing off my health for 1 more Monday or 1 more weekend. So, I must stay determined to finish this race. emoticon

The trainer told me it will take me about 12 to 14 months to lose this weight, that's crazy but that's the real reality. So, that means I have a long road ahead of me but I will stay CONSISTENT.

emoticon emoticon emoticon Thanks for reading...

Hope you guys got answers somewhere on this website. I've never checked this forum. There's a ton of good info here on this website. I was dx in Nov with pre-diabetes--A1C at 6.2 Since, I have used the diabetic meal plan but I do my own meals, not theirs. It has helped me balance the carbs and other stuff throughout my day. Just had my 3rd A1C and I am now in the normal range, but I don't meet with the dr. til Friday so I'll find out more then.

Clearly, balancing out the carbs (30-45 for meals, 15-30 for snacks) and mostly eating high quality carbs (veggies, fruits, whole grains) has worked. Surprising how well it's worked, cuz I don't feel deprived. You can basically eat whatever you want if you build it in to your eating plan and if you stay within (or close to) the right number of carbs. Of course, it is wiser to use your carbs for healthy foods rather than less healthy foods.

I'm no expert, but I have learned a lot by reading, trying things out, using this website and seeing the changes in my A1C numbers. Good luck to all of you as you begin to make changes.

I was told yesterday that I am pre-diabetic. A1C (I think that is what it's called) test showed my level at 6.0. Fortunately, I started getting serious about losing weight last month and lost 9 lbs. I considered getting a lap-band previously. I know now that I am fighting to save my life if I don't change my eating habits. I've been eating more protein now than I ever have but I need to know what foods to avoid to help myself. Is there a list somewhere?

I bought a book called Change One for Diabetes from Reader's Digest and it has photos with the recipes. I like to see what I will be cooking.
I was told in May the same thing about elevated sugar levels and the need to make changes. Pondered that for most of the summer, and am now taking steps to better insure my success, tracking nutrition and exercise.
My doc said go heavy on the vegetables and this is a great time of year to try that. Even adding a couple strawberries to a veggie salad makes it a treat.
Good luck!

Right now is the right time to begin again!

Hi New to this team!!

Was just told on Tuesday, that I have elevated sugar levels & need to get my weight under control & start losing weight. So, I am trying to get information on how to control sugar levels with the correct foods.

Any suggestions on a place that can give me some good meal plans other than on Spark b/c didn't really care for the meal plans there.

Thanks.

Hi! I took a survey and ended up a team member here. When I answered the question on pre-diabetics, I had my husband in mind - not me. How do I go back to my normal nutrition tracker?

I'd still like to receive the newsletter. Is that possible?

Thanks.

Hi,

Quick question. How do you track your morning coffee or tea? Do you count it as breakfast or as a snack because you sip it for an hour or so, like me?

Thanks!

Just joined today and super happy I found this group. I am a self diagnosed Pre-Diabetic but I am pretty positive I qualify. I have some of the symptoms and I've been told by a Chiropractor (who does stuff with natural health remedies, etc.) that if I am not Diabetic already, I am near it. Being 280 pounds at 5'7" - I would have to agree.

Been searching the internet for foods to avoid or cut back on. I know I need to hit it hard right off the bat. Any advice would be appreciated. Eager to get to know you! emoticon

Hey everyone!

I'm re-discovering the joy of vegetables. I've been eating carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and lots of salads. I've re-discovered how much I enjoy hummus, and seem to have already lost my sugar cravings. I'm still making changes, and have a lot to learn, but am very happy with this week's adjustments, since learning from my doctor last week that I'm pre-diabetic.

Hope you all have had a good week, and I wish you all a fabulous weekend. I'll be vending at the Virginia Renaissance Faire (art quilts with a fantasy theme) so am trying to figure out foods to bring that won't interfere with my progress. Salads, veggies, boiled eggs ... I'm camping without access to much except electricity, and don't want to rely too much on vendor food (burgers, etc).

Oh, Buzzzz! That is scary! Glad all worked out in the long run! Be careful! I only take 2 pills a day and I still use a weekly holder with each day's pills in a slot marked with the day. I can't remember if I took them or not some days. One thing I never forget to do is put on makeup, so I keep my pill dispenser in the same drawer! lol
Busy day here - beauty shop, stop for large envelopes, lunch with hubby, post office to mail request for name change on my passport, jewelry store to have a ring my mother gave me sized, bank and home at last!
I use Mrs. Dash for seasoning my green beans and also add a small diced onion for added flavor. I love home cooked green beans! I have so many leftovers from this week, I am not cooking tonight. There are grilled pork chops from Monday, chicken and rice from Tuesday and a stuffed pepper from last night. I will fix a salad and the buffet will be complete!
Have a good day and I am also looking forward to nice temps this weekend!

Stuffed green peppers sound great. I will hve to make some one of these days. How do you fix your green beans? I don,t know what to add to them to give them flavor. I usually end up putting some butter on them and a little Mrs. Dash.
It has been rather cold and rainy here today. Suppose to get up to 80 before the end of the week.
I had a bad experience this past week. I accidenly overdosed on some of my meds. Of course I realized right away what I had done. When I called Altert Response they sent me to ER so I was an unhappy camper for a little while. It turned out OK and I was home in a couple hours. I always have my pills counted out for each day for several days ahead but it was the end day and I sorta messed up.
I took some of the pills for the next day. I was not thinking what day it was.
If you ever saw anybody mad at themselves I was for a little while.

I've been looking for a pill dispenser .with an alarm and lock so I can't take them for the next day too easy once I have them all counted out and locked in. Of couse I will be able to use the key if necessary. Think I found what I need. If that doesn't work will know I am loosing it. I haven't had trouble counting the pills for each day but that one night I didn't use my brain.

What my Alert Response suggesed is similar but in the long run this is less expensive and will work for me for now..
So until I get it I am counting out one day at a time so I can't take tomorrow nights after I had taken tonight's pills earlier..Probably doesn't make too good of sense but neither did it to me when I did it. I can laugh a little now but I couldn't then.

.

Beautiful day here! Still chilly at 41 degrees, but sunny. As soon as I get the fresh green beans in a pot and the stuffed peppers in the oven, it is time for a walk. Now to decide if I take the two dogs with me and make it into a real cardio exercise!

How was the chili, Buzzzz? We had lunch/dinner at Ruby Tuesday. I had the salad bar and a crab cake. Tasty and healthy!
We spent the afternoon at AAA booking our 7 day cruise up the Alaskan coast in June! We leave from British Vancouver and will spend two days there prior to the cruise. So exciting!

Terrific Tuesday here! I went grocery shopping, got gas, stopped at Barnes and Noble to buy a new cord for my Nook and they gave me one for free even though my warranty is over! DInner is in the crock pot and all I have let to do is the daily run of the sweeper. With two Golden Retrievers it is a daily task to run the vacuum!

I like the white cheddar flavored rice cakes. At least they do have some taste! I usually add whipped cream cheese if it is for breakfast or peanutbutter if it is for lunch. Thank goodness meat is not high in carbs! I could not live without meat! Why is it that all the "good foods" are the forbidden ones? LOL

I know McDonalds isn't the best place for a sandwich but when you are HUNGRY you grab what you can get. When I shop at Walmart that is sometimes what I end up doing. Especially since Walmart's has a McDonald's in the store. They have somethings healthier than their sandwiches, but it seems like if my stomach is growling at me all I want is meat and that is in a sandwich.
This morning I had a healthy breakfast late late so I didn't really need lunch except for a glass of milk to take with my pills; then back to shopping. Tonight I had a hearty meal of steamed fish, veggies with a couple small pieces of potato. ( I knew that was a carb I didn't need) Chocolate milk which was my version of skim milk, Hershey's dark chocolate powder and sweetener. Ate an orange for magnesium and potassium. Suppose to have a banana with one of my pills for potasuim, but that's so high in carbs. Might eat a half of a banana yet. Sometimes a banana milk shake. ( Weight Watcher's Version
Those rice cakes are a good idea because sometimes I just think I need bread or potato.
That rice cake is a good idea. Maybe I could have eaten that instead of the potato. I knew I had about my limit on carbs. I like strawberry cream cheese. Or eat berries in the morning. I had sorta forgot about rice cakes. You refreshed my memory there.

I had it down to 168 this morning so better than it has been so I do believe I am getting there. I blew it this morning but skipped the birthday cake this afternoon. Just coffee. Tonight just tomato soup and celery with peanut butter for protein. We celibate once a month the birthdays that month.

I use the Diabetic Tracker, too, and I agree the calories and carbs are too high. I aim for no more than 100 carbs a day and between 1000 to 1200 calories.
I have fallen back on going to the gym for the last two weeks due to some remodeling being done here at home, but now that it is almost finished I am going back to my 3 times a week. I have been doing that since August and my BMI has dropped 12 points and I have lost inches everywhere. The weight is slow to come off, but my trainer says I am obviously building muscle and the weight is creeping down.
No, I quit taking vitamins a few months ago when I read that the calcium was useless. I hated taking them as they were huge horse pills! lol
Giving up potatoes and things like pretzels have been the hardest to do.
Hang in there, It will happen!

I really enjoyed looking at all of your pictures. Yes I found that list. Sorry about that. You are doing great losing weight. I sorta went backwards. I finally got back to where I started at the 170. Now to get to the 164 where I was. One of my problems happens to be all the pot lucks here which are always bad luck for me.I forgot the fried chicken today which couldn't have been better luck for me. Except my friends are going to be asking me where I was. The car doesn't run without gas and it was so dirty you could draw faces all over it.
Did you know Spark People has a tracker for Diabetics? If I did more exercise it might work but they allow too much fat and carbs for me. I have cut back on some carbs and fat and have made some progress so I"ll keep working at it. If my friends don't sabatoge me with good intentions. :) I need vitamin B and folic acid so figure I need some whole grains. I have never seen the Atkin Diet. Like I said you sure are doing great.Do you take vitamins?

Buzzzz, I sent you a message with the list I try to follow. It is from Atkins Diet site. Hope this helps.

I have totally fallen off the wagon these last few days. Since I cannot cook with my stove and refrigerator in the dining room while the kitchen remodeling is going on, I have eaten terribly bad things and loved them all. I am ashamed of myself! emoticon

Thank you. Are 100% WW breads and W GRAINS CONSIDERED in the white breads? If you have 100 carbs that allows basicly protein and a few veggies without cqrbs. Not so sure what you eat then.

Buzzzz, I too have been diagnosed at pre-diabetic. I am aiming to keep my daily carbs at 100 or below. This is not always easy, but with the Food Tracker on here it is easy keep count. I am trying to stay away fro sweets, and in general, all white foods - chips, pretzels, potatoes, bread, rice, etc. I have lost about 10 lbs in the last 4 weeks.

Good luck in this difficult struggle!

I just had brunch with a high school friend. I had quiche, but only ate the bottom of the crust and a cup of fresh fruit. Have to stay away from the salty snacks!

Hope everyone is having a fabulous Friday and ready for a great weekend!
