Happy New Year! How is everyone doing? Still hula-ing? Soon I get to go home to visit my ohana and will be going to some free hula shows at the mall, etc. I'm so excited! It's been a couple years and some change since my last visit. I'm still kicking it with dvd workouts but think I need to do some hula here and there again. How about ya'll?

Hello all you hula lovers out there. I too love hula! I am new to Spark. I felt the need to get moving again so got the Tracker and oh my....... After 5 years of chaos - basement flood - Mom sick - her passing - sorting her stuff - selling house - me moving - severe bronchitis etc. I am finally back doing what I love to do. But my body suffered during those years. Hula kept me in shape before that so I have started back again. But it's amazing how fast the body stiffens up and fills out when you stop moving. lol It's a challenge to do all the moves I did even 5 years ago. I am in my 60's. I am currently dancing with the Golden Hawaiians at a Senior Center in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Just took a hula seminar in Chicago with Uluwehi Guerrero from Maui. It was so filled with aloha - amazing. Now I am working on those hula at home.

Oh Wanaka, you brought back some great memories. Meeting the ships, some Waikiki, Tripler Army Hospital, the yearly hula fest at Kapi'olani Park, etc. We wore Bete mu'us once. This was before the were called just Betes and cost $250. Wish I still had it - oh, never mind, it soo wouldn't fit now.

Last week was my friend's retirement lu'au. We danced Lei Ho'oheno and sang a few songs. It felt so good to be up there again with my "local" ohana. A real home style lu'au and celebration. Oh, Wow lau lau. I have a friend who teaches hula at the community center. I'll start with her, I think, so I can be on a schedule and know I can dance in community at least once a week.

Wish me luck. I'm on a tear. I'm seeing my rolfer every two weeks - she is resculpting my body after 50 years of neglect. I looked in the mirror and was surprised to see I am now bow legged and lean forward. My balance was way off, but she commented this time on my lack of bruises (in other words, I'm staying upright more often).

I am also starting to do yoga, tai chi, and training on TRX equipment (along with other stuff) twice a week. I walk with my sister. Now I need to get a nutritionist. I'm going to die a pauper, but at least I'll die climbing a mountain instead of wasting away on my sofa.

Meditation helps, too.

A lot of hankering for the hula on this page. I spent or 15 years training (about 60 years ago!) and look forward to meeting those who would like to learn a new hula. Right now I'm practicing Lei Ho'oheno to dance for a friend's retirement party, but after that it'll be hard to be motivated again. Let me know if anyone around Oly wants to dance.

BTW Lacey community/senior center has a very good teacher and they've had continuous classes for several years.

Sounds like you have had such a lovely dance life, I love the Hawaiian Wedding song so much, and such a wonderful, romantic dance .... when my son was going to
school in Maui he learned to hula as well as part of the curriculum, and he learned
some uke. I always thought he was so fortunate to learn dance at such an early age....
I miss dancing and hope to enroll again when a lose a few more pounds! I know I could
dance anyway at my weight but knees cannot take it at all...... so ....... makes working
on losing weight worth it.
I do not know what fast hula is either, but coincidentally they are offering it at my gym once a week so I think I will check it out just from curiosity.

Hi Jilly,
I've been doing hula since I was 7 (oh so long ago!) on Maui where I was born and raised. Danced in a hula troupe for a Mrs. Peterson while in high school - that was one of my part time jobs - we performed weekly at various hotels on the island for tourists and when the Naval ships would dock. So many fun memories!

In the last 18 years or so, I've just done it at my children's weddings and Culture events at several schools. In 2005 I was contacted by a couple from Oahu to learn the Hawaiian Wedding Song to perform at their 50th Wedding Anniversary Luau they were going to have when they came 'home' to Iowa. Beautiful dance and so grateful I now know how to do that for family weddings.

I have no clue what Fast Hula is - just fast numbers to be a cardio workout? You'll have to let us know! lol I would like to perform if ever I get to go back and live on Maui where my family still is!

Hi -

Just saw your posting and it caught my eye because I have been searching for a halau since moving to Oahu a little over a month ago. I've been dancing and performing hula for the last 3 1/2 years and am so anxious to get back into it.

Do you know of any halau's or fitness classes like Hot Hula that you would recommend?

Mahalo :D

For me I have danced hula in the past with Ua Smith on Maui for 4 years and with a small halau in Oahu and I forget name, it was long time ago!

Presently I am going to take something called Fast Hula at the fitness center I just joined, oh boy what can that be?

and for me in the future I plan to dance again when I get to move back home..... YOU ??
