I've taken Mort to a dog friendly beach. He LOVES the water. Goes in waist deep and lays down :)
But I never take him off leash. (Except in our fenced in back yard.)

JULZ, yeah, that was a main reason I called my placement rep before going to a park. She was able to recommend dog parks where she's never experienced aggressive dogs (and she's been going to dog parks for over a decade). She also recommended going without the dog a few times to get a feel for when the park is full/empty so that I could time my visit appropriately.

VAL, I like your idea of keeping her on a leash at the beach. Perhaps I'll try that. It's also getting cooler now too, though, so I may end up waiting until after winter. Thanks!

I don't go to dog parks for two reasons: 1) I've seen too many people bring in aggressive dogs and greyhound skin is so easy to tear; 2) nobody is ensuring that the dogs coming to the park are vaccinated. I do not want to expose my greys to parvo, distemper, etc.

I take my grey to the dog park regularly and she loves it. I also go to dog friendly beaches but I never let her off leash there. She did take off one day, caught me off guard while I was cleaning up after her, and yanked the leash out of my hand and ran like crazy. Fortunately after a short sprint she stopped and I was able to catch her. It took several visits for my grey to get comfortable on the beach, and she is still unsure when there are waves, but she will willingly go for a dip in the calm water or tide pools. :-)

Do you take your Grey to dog parks? Dog beaches? How often?

As Sadie has adjusted to her new home (it's been 6 weeks) she's shown a lot more energy. I recently called my placement rep to ask about where I could take her to get some of her energy out, since we don't have a large grassy back yard. I ended up trying out a couple dog parks, both fenced, and after 3 trips she finally let loose yesterday.

I would love to take her to a dog beach, and I see pictures of people taking their greys to dog beaches, but I worry that she'll get caught in a moment and just bolt. Does anyone have any experience with this? I know a lot of it is personal to the dog.
