Ah Wispy - I am so glad that you posted about your nice weather. We were in the mid 70's today and it was just lovely. But with all the news about deadly cold temps in the north, I haven't said anything about it. We will drop into the 40s on Tuesday so we are not completely free of cold temps. I was sitting in my chaise lounge in my sun room which overlooks the condo gardens and so thankful that I live where I do.

Mike has breakfast with his parents every Sunday morning. I normally do my long run on Sunday but I am still nursing my lungs. So he invited me to join them. I had not met his Mother before so this was quite a big step in our relationship. We had a really nice time. He really does seem to be fully committed. He even talked today about taking me up to Wisconsin to see where he comes from - but we decided to wait until after the thaw.

I hope everyone dealing with the cold weather is able to stay safe and warm.

Hi there ladies,
Kim wishing you and Mike all the best in your 'new' relationship. He sounds like he is also wanting a deeper commitment.
Celia that sounds like a marathon episode, but pleased the result was satisfactory.
Kathi sounds like winter is upon you in full force. Enjoy the chili it sounds perfect to combat the outside conditions. Enjoy.
The final dip of the season Kali and on to log fires. Cosy and snug as two bugs in a rug.
I almost feel guilty about sharing how wonderful summer is here right now, but then it is the best part of life right now. The garden is a picture, the butterflies and butterflying, the bees abuzzing and a gentle breeze is blowing today. I am out on the back verandah my favourite all year round place, but especially when it is warm. All is quiet and peaceful right now and I am loving every second of it.

Brrrr, Kathi, stay warm! We are still above freezing where I live in northern Virginia, but not too far north in southern Maryland, the temps are in the teens. That's a pretty tight temperature gradient. Must be a front right on top of us. We are supposed to get the arctic blast tomorrow. Gonna hate standing at the bus stop.

Kali, the UPS thing was more of a lesson learned. NEVER use a UPS Store; ALWAYS use a UPS Customer Service Center. Sorry you won't be enjoying that hot tub for awhile, but sitting in front of the fireplace sounds good to me.

Waffled a lot this morning about running the local Frozen 5K because there was supposed to be freezing rain, but when I checked the temperature at the start location, it was above freezing, so I went. It rained lightly but steadily the whole time, but I'm glad I did it.

Celia - what a horrible experience... After the Christmas fiasco UPS experienced, I'd think they want to improve their image...
emoticon
Kathi - the game! OMG! We lived in Cincinnati and layered everything we owned before sitting on the back deck and deciding NOT to go to the ice bowl.... We too are entering the sub-zero zone and I've needed to wash my car for almost a month. Guess it will just stay dirty
emoticon
We took what may be the last emoticon for a while, given the wind-chill warnings, but it was heaven. DH found a new (used) vehicle yesterday and picked me up for a test drive - newer, cleaner and safer + a fair price - can't ask for more...
Spending the day indoors (may - mind you - may hit the elliptical for a few minutes) but mostly planning on a warm fire, some football (still Bengals fans) and food simmering in the crockpot.

We're going into the Deep Freeze! It's still above zero here (5 degrees) but it's not going to move in the right direction today (or tomorrow or Tuesday.)

I still haven't gotten my car washed and now it will have to wait. The line at the gas station car wash was practically around the block and I had to make the decision to wait until later in the week. (This cold-snap is going to be brief; heck, I can remember when the temperature would stay below zero for a couple of WEEKS. It was pretty funny how we'd all celebrate when the thermometer registered one degree! Apparently, I'm showing my age.)

Today, my brother and my two nephews will be going to the Green Bay Packers wildcard playoff game; how crazy is that? My sister in law and I will make chili for later and amuse ourselves while they're gone (and probably watch the game to see all the fans' fashions.)

Have a warm Sunday!

Kathi, I know the feeling about catering to strangers. Wispy, more power to you for actually tackling the job of being a hotel owner. I'm more of an "animal person" than a "people person."

Cindi, CONGRATS on your fantastic progress!!

Kali, your new year's celebration sounds just right!

Maureen, thanks for the tip on oil pulling with coconut oil. I'd never heard of it.

Kim, I love the sensible way you approach relationships. Someone posted a quote on FB yesterday that went something like, "When God shuts a door, stop banging on it. What's on the other side was not meant for you." In my relationship history, I would keep banging on a door till my hand was bloody.

Yesterday I learned an important lesson about UPS: UPS "stores" gouge. I found that out when I needed to ship something to someone in Canada by a certain date, and based on how long it took my Christmas card to arrive, it was clear the postal service was not the solution. So I headed to the nearest UPS "store," thanking my lucky stars it was only about 5 miles away. Before I went, I researched the shipping cost online, and when the "store" quoted me a price more than TWICE the UPS website cost, I knew they were trying to gouge me. They told me to get the cheaper rate I needed to go to Springfield, VA, which at rush hour from where I live may as well be on Mars. When I asked for more info, they gave me the standard UPS toll-free number, and I spent a frustrating 10 minutes with that awful automated system before ferreting out that I needed a UPS Customer Service Center, not something that purports to be a "UPS Store," and that there was one in a better location. I drove straight there (near Dulles Airport), and a very nice woman led me by the hand through the process of shipping the package internationally. Then I drove home. Normally at that hour, the drive from near Dulles Airport to my house would have been almost as painful as the drive from Springfield, but with the ice and snow yesterday, most people stayed home, making the trip more bearable but still too much time out of my day (2.5 hours of precious free time).

Hi there ladies,

Maureen I too look forward to hearing how the oil pulling goes. The person I heard about it from uses coconut oil and says it melts the moment it hits the warmth of your mouth. I do use coconut oil for cooking sometimes. There are so many varied reports on whether it is good for you or not, but it sure is good for softening the skin. emoticon

Maureen, thanks so much for the article. I had never heard of oil pulling before. I think I am going to give it a try. I look forward to getting to know you. This is a great group. I gain so much information and support here.

I am back to work and feeling quite a bit better. The honey combined with an antibiotic and lots of extra sleep seem to have done the trick. While I don't like being sick, the down time allowed me to really sit back and take a look at my life. I am so grateful to be where I am today. I am so blessed that I have the ability to see the blessings of the universe and how gracefully the universe guides my life. Last month, Mike and I decided to stop seeing each other. I was heartbroken over the decision but felt that it was the right thing to do for myself. I prayed that if I was not making the right choice, that the universe would give me a sign that I would understand to let me know. Almost immediately, the universe was in action putting challenges in my path to help me question what it is that I really want in life. As these "tests" appeared and I resolved them, it became more and more apparent to me what is important to me. Almost as soon as I got to that place, Mike contacted me and told me that he too had been having some very deep personal growth opportunities and that he is now sure that he wants to make a relationship with me work. We talked a lot over the last couple of weeks. We are both committed to really making it work. This makes me really happy.

It was 85 degrees here yesterday and today it is only 50. I realize that is warm for most of the country, but it is quite a one day drop.

Love and peace to you all!

Maureen, I tried oil-pulling last summer right before I got so sick. I don't think the two are necessarily connected but I did stop just in case.

I'd like to try again and I've been researching different oils to use. I had decided to try sesame oil and then bought the wrong kind (I bought toasted sesame oil by mistake. What was I thinking? I was thinking that I was in a hurry and needed to get back to work. Now I'm also looking for ideas on fun things to use toasted sesame oil!!)

I'll be most interested in knowing how it works for you!

KATHI ~ Thanks for the Natural cough medicine. I rarely take over the counter medicines so I love trying out all the natural remedies instead. I just started coconut pulling, 20 minutes of swishing it in your mouth, for sensitive teeth and surprisingly it is really working. They claim it relieves lots of stuff including arthritis but since i don't have it I wouldn't know for sure, ezinearticles.com/?Oil-Pulling-With-

Good morning all!

Cindi, what an awesome accomplishment in 2013 for you!

The crazy people went swimming in Lake Michigan yesterday. I think it was 2 degrees with a strong north wind and just watching them was enough of a jolt for me. Men and women wearing shorts and swimsuits jumping in an 8 x 8 hole cut into the ice with a chainsaw; I just don't get it. I suppose they've achieved their biggest challenge of the New Year on the very first day.

I'll achieve my challenges a little at a time, thank you very much! emoticon

Have a great day!!

Oh good golly where to start. Have not been getting any posts for this thread and thought you were all away. Gotta catch up and read back.

HAPPY 2014 TO YOU ALL

Kathi thanks for this recipe. Will try it next time I get a cough. I have a tendency to cough when I laugh a lot these days, especially a belly laugh, so may take it just before watching the comedy shows I love. Indeed pleasure has to be in the eye of the beholder. Nothing would persuade me that swimming in those temperatures could possibly be termed as fun. :)

Celia, well I owned a small private hotel for several years and did not enjoy playing mine host either. My place was in the kitchen, I love cooking. Man alive it sure is a lot of work but the proceeds were great.

Kim be well soon. Coughs seem to hang on for so long, I am hoping this remedy will work well. I use one for anything wrong with my mouth, teeth, ulcers, biting your tounge (which I happened to do last week so it is fresh in my mind.) Rub on a little marmite. First it takes away the pain and if necessary speeds up the healing. It is also an ancient recipe and once I tried it, just amazing.

Celia, my cousin "in-law" owns a B&B; I couldn't do it! She loves it but I think I would have trouble catering to all the individual needs (one of her customers requested "no tree fruit" on the breakfast part and that's when I knew I could never do it!)

Speaking of fruit, here we are at a brand new year ripe with new opportunities! emoticon emoticon

Have a great day!! (At noon, I'll be watching crazy people go swimming in Lake Michigan. The guy that organizes it has to go out early with his chainsaw to cut out some of the ice! Now, doesn't that sound like fun??)

Kali, ha haaaaa, I said pretty much the same thing to my MIL when she suggested we open a bed and breakfast. I told her when we retire next, it will be for good. I don't need the aggravation of playing gracious host, especially since I'm not thusly inclined.

Kathi - thank you so much! I am going to try this today! I made an appointment with my doctor. I have compromised lungs due to asthma and a history of Lyme Disease so I really need to be very careful with them. I am confident the combination of approaches will serve me well!

Kim, what a drag that you're sick!! This summer I had a cold and the never-ending cough was making me think it was bronchitis. Now, the last place I want to go when I'm sick is to the doctor emoticon and I just wanted to see if there was something I could try on my own first. I found this onion/honey syrup rememdy; wow, what a difference!

I only chose this link for the recipe, there are many options to choose from. I didn't buy any fancy onion or special honey; I just used what I had on hand. I have since learned that this is an old rememdy; I've heard many stories and seen many variations on the recipe.

I hope everyone has a great day thinking about all the great things we've all accomplished in 2013! I know that for me, posting here and keeping up with all of you has really helped me stay on track. Thank you all!

I started to get sick just before heading back home. Not the best way to start a 14 hour drive (4 hours longer than normal due to traffic) But the sun was out and I made it. I would have felt bad no matter what I was doing. The flu symptoms are over now but I still have some sinus infection and now bronchitis. I am going to call my doctor tomorrow to see if she will call in an RX for me. Looks like I will greet 2014 from my sofa.

Thank you for the condolences.

I am looking forward to an outdoor adventure tomorrow. We are going to a winter festival at hockeytown to see alumni of the redwings play against alumni of the maple leaf's. Should be fun although cold. A fun way to end the year all together I think.

emoticon only if you could put up with a crabby hostess Celia!

DH still asleep. Not often he gets into REM. Fed the emoticon - they are such a joy and catching up on sparking while sipping a good ginger-cinnamon emoticon (of course, I didn't use a measuring spoon, so will be unable to recreate...)

Hope to spend a couple hours in the office (so blessed to have the days between the holidays as vacation) and head to Sams - yes, the cupboards are bare...
Loving two more days of 2013 - been avoiding contemplating what I (really) want, but so enjoying a emoticon from my FIL - reading about mind-body health!

Catching up on the news...

Jenny - sorry to hear about your DH's grandmother and can relate to getting Celia's winter - single digits today..
Wispy - glad those emoticon are gone and would love to have you emoticon anytime (might 'cool' your heat wave?)

Celia - Christmas specials - is there anything better? Sorry you had to settle for anticipation, but sometimes that is just what we need (especially considering your MIL?)
Kathi - glad your emoticon are gone too and emoticon for the wonderful post. Here's to BEing love and to 10 days off!

Kim - so glad you had great weather and a mindfully wonderful visit with your family.

Rivers - we experienced our first 2 only Christmas two years ago - weather kept us home. Was lovely (and quiet) in it's own way...

Home from Christmas with DH's family in GA - great weather and wonderful to see them and be on the sidelines of the family interaction
emoticon
Drove home (15.5 hours) Friday and glad we did. Wonderful weather Saturday allowed me to clean the hot-tub, walk with the girls and finish laundry from the trip. Enjoying a roaring fire, pups inside as the temperatures may climb into the double digits today. Heading to Omaha tomorrow or Tuesday to try out a treadmill - no more excuses!
emoticon
Glad to hear all is well - missed you all!

Kim, I should take a page from your book when it comes to handling family and the way they can pluck your last nerve.

JY, so sorry about your Grandmother, but I'm glad her last moments were peaceful. Hope future Christmases will be opportunities to remember her at her best once the grieving is done.

I feel like I've been gone a really long time but I guess it's only been a few days. My husband's grandmother passed away peacefully on Christmas day. Everyone appears to be handling it differently.
I stepped back on the treadmill today. I chose to listen to an ask Teal video from YouTube. I've been listening to a lot of her videos lately and I even purchased her book. Her way of talking about spirituality really resonates with me.
My husband and I went overboard buying chocolates that were half off yesterday. Now I'll have to deal with this temptation for awhile. Maybe I will give one box of chocolates away.

Family is such a wonderful lesson to us. I love each and every one of my family members but each of them has something about them that drives me crazy. I am trying to take each annoyance as an opportunity for growth. I find that I have more compassion for each of them when I am able to do this.

My dog is also a bit out of sorts with all the activity. At the end of the day, he is more than happy to run up the stairs to our bedroom in the attic. I think he will appreciate our nice and quiet home when we get back. Thankfully, he is pretty cold tolerant. He is enjoying running leash free in the yard.

Tonight I will be meeting some of my friends from high school for bowling. Then I will head back home to Florida tomorrow morning.

Kathi, your family sounds a bit like Kim's (loud). I, too, love my quiet, and I like my routine. When I was younger, and my parents were still alive, my unwritten rule was no more than 4 days for a visit. Longer than that, and we got too close to plucking each other's last, frayed nerve. Guess that's where I am with MIL right now, praying the batteries in the remote will die, so I can say, "Oh, darn, all out of AA batteries." Tonight, we get DH's daughter and her boyfriend to join in, but we will be meeting at a champagne-and-food pairing dinner and then spending the night in the hotel (in our separate rooms). Come Sunday morning, we should start to recover the peace.

Rivers, I love the quiet mornings with just the two of us. Okay, three, with the cat.

Quite a bit of our Christmas family time was before the 25th - taking time to visit with our sibblings & their families for short periods.

emoticon Life is indeed interesting most days but expecially interesting when there are family gatherings emoticon somehow we manage to survive. emoticon
Our Christmas day was unusual because there was just the 2 of us - it was a first to feel that empty nest on Christmas day.

Amanda works as a paramedic her schedule was 3 12 hour days starting the 25. Alison is a nurse and was on the 12 hour night shift from the 24th to the 26th. emoticon The best part is they are coming home for a couple of nights & we will have our Family time beginning today.
Dawna is in Nova Scotia with he new family- they had their first Christmas with their first child a little girl (10 months) we skyped with them as they helped Dakota Rose open her Christmas presents. It was really a gift to be able to see them Christmas morning & that they shared it with us.

We went to a brothers after lunch to have a bit of time with him and then that evening good friends invited us for supper. ( They had an empty nest for the first time too.)
A little long winded today but just had to share.

Oh, Family Dynamics. My family is L-O-U-D, all of us! I live a quiet life and it's pretty overwhelming when we're all together so I've learned to scout out quiet corners for a short break when I notice the need. Most of us don't get together at Christmas due to geographic distance, we get together in August for one gigantic 3-day hoopla (which as I think about it, that's a better option since my quiet corner might be outside in the warm sunshine.)

One more day of work for me and then I go back on vacation until January 7. (I like this schedule!!) Have a peaceful day!!

Yikes, Kim, that's a crowd! I'm having a stressful enough time with just my MIL, especially since DH has been gone for so much of her visit. She is such a gracious and generous woman, but I'm having a tough time with her personal form of passive-aggressiveness. She will ask me for a decision (do you want to eat in the dining room or at the breakfast table, for example), even though she has already decided what she wants. If my decision doesn't agree with hers, there will be an almost continuous string of "Are you sure," "Wouldn't it be warmer here," "I like to watch the fireplace," and so on. I've given up, so I just toss the decision back to her. And I won't even mention the TV remote (click...2 seconds...click...2 seconds...click....)

I am glad that I have practiced mindfulness skills over the past few years. I live alone and am generally in control of my surroundings. Yesterday got really overwhelming for me. We had 9 adults and 3 kids under three here yesterday. And since they are all family, the seem to know just where my buttons are. I got pretty upset with my mother while I was making the mashed potatoes. It's not important now that she was critical of everything I was doing. I see now that she must have been just as frustrated as me. I appologized right after dinner and she wasn't even upset with me. After everyone else went to bed, I watched a movie all alone. I really enjoyed the peace and quiet!

We were talking about going to a movie today but plans seems to be hard to firm up. I have decided to be happy with whatever comes my way. We are going to try to get our annual Christmas portrait. With 3 babies, that might be a test. emoticon

Yesterday was a very nice day; I went to Church in the morning, puttered around the house in the afternoon and then went to a neighbor's house for dinner. (The neighbor with the Christmas Tree Angel. He rearranged his lights since Monday to show the Angel off better.)

Now it's time to get back to a schedule. I have to work today and tomorrow and then I have 10 days off again! This is a schedule I could get used to!!

Jenny, we finally got winter...teens and low 20s overnight. MIL will be happy, since she likes the fireplace on, and it was just too hot for it.

Kathi, wonder what the deal is with computers? Wispy, you, me.... I love the poem your Spark friend sent, and I cried when I read your blog about giving the Christmas angel to your neighbor.

Kim, I'm glad you are enjoying your trip to Richmond. At least you can wear those sweatshirts now!

Wispy, stay cool! We'll be complaining about the cold before long, I'm sure.

Here, I'm feeling just a little down that the presents sit untouched under the tree, and the dining room table is stretched with the extra leaves and a new tablecloth long enough to cover it...but empty. No wonderful smells of cooking fill the house. DH kinda drew the short straw in his schedule this month. His mom came to visit, but he has spent half of her visit flying...5 days in a row. He won't be back till after midnight tonight, and I will have to get up at 4 tomorrow to go to work, so our Christmas won't happen till tomorrow night. On the plus side, we have the extra day of anticipation, and we'll have another celebration when his daughter and her boyfriend visit on the weekend.

What a wonderful story.

The cold has hit central Virginia. We are in the mid 30's today with a breeze. I am freezing to the bone - but I also find it kind of fun. It reminds me that I am someplace out of my ordinary and that is nice.

I am enjoying my time with my parents (although they both drive me nuts at times.) My siblings and their families will be arriving in the next few hours. Then the house will be loud and chaotic. Wonderful but tiring!!!

Merry Christmas to each of you!!

Hey there ladies, guess everyone is busy with holiday things. It is Christmas Eve over here and I am up early. Still overcast and quite cool - almost Christmassy in fact. :)
Will be busy today as most of us I am sure.

Kathi love the Christmas poem. Thank you for sharing.

Good morning all!

Kim, how nice of you to bring warm weather with you as you travel? Maybe you'd like to take a trip to Wisconsin? (but only if you bring warm weather with you.)

Our "Big Snowstorm" was kind of a bust, we might have gotten 5 or 6 inches of snow. Inconvenient for us but not life-altering. Nonetheless, I was very glad I traveled on Saturday to get the computer. I was surprised at myself, I was kind of disappointed when it stopped snowing around noon.

It seems like I want to get a million things done in the next five minutes. Someone sent me a lovely post on my spark page so I took a moment to send her a goodie. Now I don't see it there, where did it go? Oh, I see it now; I sent it to myself!! (I must have needed a goodie today!!)

This is her post, I thought it was lovely:

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls,
but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies,
preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime,
but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity,
but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes,
attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata
but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the spouse.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.
Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way.
Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return
but rejoices in giving to those who can't.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost,
golf clubs will rust, but giving the gift of LOVE will endure.

Hi there guys,
Celia good news about the new PC. Happy you have got it all up and running. I am still kind of balancing with three old ones. emoticon
I am still not sure what is going on with them, but currently today at least two of them seem to going reasonably well. Slow…. But that may be the time of year.

Jenny, have to say a warm climate is very pleasant. I was born and bred in a cold winter part of the world, and although I do miss it at Christmas time (when I still think there should be snow). I love the warmth we get most of the year. We are in summer right now.

Kathi great news and what a good friend. I sure missed seeing you about the place on the assorted threads we share. Wishing you a good day also. Mine is being spent in a similar way to yours.

Kim, bet they are pleased you brought the heat wave with you and a snow flurry for Christmas would be lovely. I am planning on very light wear myself because we are in the middle of a heat wave here. emoticon

Welcome back Kathi - that goodness for your friend with a spare computer. What a blessing. It is nice to have you back. Enjoy your snow day.

Celia - I am glad things are getting better. I hope Jynks is still improving.

I drove up to Richmond VA from Florida yesterday. apparently I brought the heat with me. Today is record high for them. I packed all my long sleeved stuff and sweatshirts .... and it will be nearly 80 this afternoon. But the cold will be back tomorrow and we might even get a snow flurry on Christmas Eve. That will be fun!

Oh, it's so good to be back online with a working computer. I am fortunate to have a friend who was able to loan me a laptop long-term; there's no money in the budget right now for a new computer and I'm thinking it's probably time.

The Inbox is back to manageable; I knew I'd have my work cut out for me once I was able to get back online and I feel so much better now that I've sifted through all the emails that came in.

I caught up on all the posts; I hope everyone is having a good weekend, each day better than the last. It's going to be a Snow Day for me today (I'm certainly having a lot of those already!) Cooking, cleaning, watching TV; it's going to be fun (oh, and setting up this computer so I know where everything is!!)

I think I have your winter, we had a sort of ice storm yesterday on the solstice. Is it a sign I should be moving to a warmer climate? I was at my mother in laws helping her out around the house yesterday. It was a long day and I didn't get to do as much exercise as usual, plus I ate poorly. I hope that I did not undo my progress for the week. I hope you all have a lovely day today.
