Leslie - what a wonderful 69th emoticon Nothing better than the whole family together.
Glad to hear about your support group friendships - has to be powerful and inspiring.
emoticon 80 degrees! We finally settled into the 50s and so some power emoticon is the order of the day.

We're taking it slow - tough for both of us, but letting dizziness dictate the effort. Therapy is now daily - 3 days of PT and 2 of ST. Completed a swallow study, so we're 'supposed' to thicken liquids with foods and he's only to drink water between meals + meds with pureed applesauce. We haven't thickened food yet - but he's taking pills with the Green Machine (which is thicker). I think he's becoming present while eating, so we'll see how it goes. If it looks like he's not strengthening his swallowing, we will follow the protocol - he'll @ least have great teeth - brushing after each meal followed by swish and spit.
Good news - he emoticon yesterday afternoon - around the neighborhood and to the car wash (just up the street). If he's feeling good this morning, he'll drive to therapy (about a mile away).

Oh my goodness Kali! You both have had a long couple of weeks! So many challenges. I’m sure you are always adjusting what is “normal”. I hope this coming week brings more answers and continued help and support. Please give Mark my best and know that you are always at the top of my prayer list for healing and comfort!

Life is good here. Lots of babysitting and family fun. All the kids and grands (and grand dogs) we’re home this weekend for Chris’ 69th birthday. It was lots of fun and such a nice honor for Chris.
Last night I had a celebration dinner for one of my sponsees. She celebrated 15 years of sobriety. We went to another fellow AA’s house because this gal is in a wheel chair and house bound after a series of surgeries. It was lovely. Then we went to an AA meeting so she could get her chip. Nice weekend.
Today I’m just recuperating and putting the house back together.
Our weather has cooled down a bit. Mostly in the low 80’s. Very pleasant.
I’m sending you so much love and support.
Huge hug!

Mark came home today and we set up his PT and ST as well as doctor's appointments. He sees his GP and Parkinson's APRN Tuesday for follow ups and hopefully we will finalize drugs, so we can complete Medicare enrollment. He's scheduled for 2 upper GI tests for swallowing and choking issues as well as continuing speech therapy started in rehab.
He's back to 'normal' and we can only hope everything will be better from here.

Hope all is good in CA - hope you are not suffering black-outs or fire smoke.

Oh no, Kali,
I'm sooooo sorry to hear that Mark is hospitalized. I wish I was there to support you in the hospital and keep you company. I will pray that he gets some answers to the most immediate concerns and that the med changes make a difference. Such a difficult balancing act with meds, I'm sure.

I'm here for you, even though it is long distance.
Sending lots of love to you both.

Leslie - how cool to visit ‘long distance’. Glad to hear about your clear skies.
Was concerned the 🔥 were close.

We’re in the hospital - Mark’s in for observation on the advice of his PD APRN. Yesterday was an ordeal. Started in the emergency department and poor Mark suffered horrible leg spasms. He’s seen the neurologist today and they’re changing some of his meds plus taking an MRI of his back. Looks like @ least another day, but we shall see...

Hope all is good with you!

Kali,
You have such a balancing act as Mark’s support system! The worry and concern is tempered with discretion of tongue. I personally find that so challenging! Be sure to take care of yourself. I will keep good wishes going your way that PT is successful and helpful!

Our weather is still hot and dry here. It’s been in the 90’s. But the silver lining is that it is crystal clear.

Sunday I had a very cool FaceTime call from my “Portuguese Mom”. I went to Portugal on an exchange program between my jr. and sr. year in HS. Another student who was in my same city who I’ve kept in touch with, went for a visit to Portugal to celebrate 50 years since we were there. She spent time with my host family and they FaceTimed me for about an hour. It was so much fun and touched my heart. That was a very special time in my life!
Have a blessed week. Sending a hug.

Leslie - I'm so sorry to hear about the fires and am sending good vibes to keep you safe. Five miles with Santa Ana winds is minutes. Thank goodness for excellent firefighters.
Bummer about the vertigo. I've been experiencing some semi-vertigo symptoms, but on the whole am delighted with the state of my health.

Mark's been having a tough time of it - lightheaded and dizzy and we're not sure if it's the lack of exercise or the naproxen or both... I'm trying to be supportive without being intrusive. Another part of the 'new' normal - PT starts Wednesday - keep your fingers crossed for improvement!

Hi Kali,
Finding the "new normal" always seems to be the deal as we head into our mature years, but you have extra challenges with Mark's PD. I'm so happy to hear that progress continues to be made in the research and treatment areas. I hope just the right support group that helps you both appears in the near future. That can be tricky. They have to be supportive and informative and not whiny and negative. That is quite a catch 22 when pain prevents movement and exercise that could help, but is not easily accomplished. Sending you both love on this front.
A girl date next Wednesday will be a great elixir for you. And Phantom is such a great one.

We are having our usual fall Santa Ana winds and fire danger here in CA. Last week we had a devastating fire about 5 miles away in Calimesa (neighboring town). My sister lives about 1 mile from where it began. It destroyed a huge mobile home park near one of our Middle Schools. One elderly lady died. So sad. 76 mobile homes were destroyed so the human loss could have been so much worse. The firefighters did a miraculous job, both ground and air, of getting control. It headed down the dry canyons toward our area but was halted in about 2 days. Looks like the coming week will be another warm windy one, with many "red flag" alerts. The plan is to possibly shut down electricity if necessary, like they did in northern California last week. It's kind of crazy, but we all just have to stay vigilant and smart.

I've had another bout with vertigo this past week. It goes on and off. Today is not so good again, but I'm just doing those exercises, drinking lots of water, and being kind to myself.

Otherwise, life is really good and I'm staying present in the day and grateful.
Sending you much love and encouragement to be kind to yourself. I'm glad you are enjoying your yoga experiences. It is a simple and helpful pleasure, for sure.

Leslie - glad your weather is better and you have such wonderful friends - an area of life I need to work on (most of my 'friends' are wives of Mark's friends). I'm sure that Jan felt the love she needed from you.

Still figuring out our retirement life, especially with Mark's Parkinson's...
We attended a conference that was highly encouraging. Our medical center's researcher thinks there will be a disease retardant in 3 years and a potential reversal in 10 years. I think seeing others 'in the same boat' may open the doors to joining a support group...
We also had two Dr. appointments - one with his new GP and one with an ortho (both sons of friends of ours). They were reducing his blood pressure meds for dizziness, but after taking (one day) of naproxen - the pressure was elevated, so I called and we'll go back to full tab with 10 readings. The naproxen is for pain in his glutei/hip for which he'll start PT Wednesday.
The lack of exercise from the pain is a double whammy, so I have a 'date' with a GF to see the Phantom of the Opera next Wednesday night.
Hopefully he'll get back to Rock Steady and stretching and we'll find a 'new normal'.
Loving my yoga experiences and have to laugh it took so long to 'find' them...
Hope all is GOOD in CA and sending much emoticon your way!

I hope your busy week is going smoothly and well. How did the carpet cleaning go? That can be disruptive. We don't have much carpet any more, only in the boys 3 bedrooms that aren't used much any more. So our carpet cleaning days are somewhat over.

I'm having a busy but very good week. Weather is cooler so I've been able to get out and walk a lot so far. Lots of yoga. Getting together with my treasures friend Jan tomorrow. I'm taking lunch to her house where we can cozy up and talk our jaws off. She is in need of some loving care right now.

Have a super rest of your week. Sending you much love!

Hi Kali.
Thanks for all the phone info. We are leaning towards the 11. Good to have positive reviews!
We’re in the 90’s again today. So no fireplace for us. But I can feel fall in the air. The breezes are different. In So. Cal we look for any tiny sign. Not a leaf has turned but the huge flocks of crows are enjoying our walnuts. They are so crafty and smart.

Love your evening fireplace/movie/apple crisp description!

Tomorrow I head to SD. Liam is 18 months today and able to start his new day care directly across the street from their new apartment. So convenient. But they are nervous about his adjustment. So I’ll help take him, be on call, and pick him up at 11:30. Fun day. I’ll come back tomorrow night because I have things on the schedule Tuesday. Chris hates when I drive at night so i just call him a lot during the drive.

Well I’m going to do some light cleaning and then meet with my sponsee and go to an AA meeting. (My usual Sunday night lately.)

Big Hug!

Bummer about the emoticon but I hope you're continuing to enjoy emoticon and we too are mid-season with no heat or air.

We settled (actually love them) on the 11. You can get a price break by trading your 7s in - we had 6s, so are donating them to Friendship Home (our domestic violence shelter). We're leasing them over 18 months and then can trade them in or purchase. (No interest and Mark's an advocate of using today's money for tomorrow's products.) Face recognition allows for an alternate, so we both have access to each others' phones.
The house was cool last night, so we had the first emoticon of the season. Fun watching Dances with Wolves and enjoying Instant Pot apple crisp.

Wow. You do have a very busy schedule. But, all good stuff!!!
What iPhone are you getting. We are waaayyyy over due for new iPhones. We still have 7's.

Our cool weather is disappearing again. Some heat creeping up on us for at least the next week. Today was mid 80's..............This is not unusual for October here, but I was sooooooo enjoying the cool!

Oh, well, no complaining necessary. Counting blessings. Silver lining.......we don't have to have the heat OR air on right now. Just fans. Woo Hoo.

Leslie,

Glad to hear youre putting up fall decorations. I hope they do indeed bring cooler weather. I know its tough to let go when you see family hurting, but you and your sis are doing the best thing. Sounds like all is good in San Diego and WTG Im getting your flu shot its on our list of things to do.

Busy day. Yoga, meeting with teammate, ordering new iPhone, a quick bite out for dinner and then book club at our place.
Life is definitely good!

Kali,
Those are some major changes you are in the middle of right now. All the picture rearranging can be emotional on its own. Your brother is so talented. So nice that his pieces will be appreciated by others. What is the Lincoln Lighthouse?

We had a nice weekend in San Diego. Liam was sick with the croup so instead of babysitting, we were just there to support, offer respite, run errands etc. We also had a nice time with Colin and Jessica. They are more settled in their new place, co-habiting for the first time.

I've been cleaning and putting up a few fall decorations to will in the cooler weather. Life is good. No new news about my brother and mom. They are still at the sketchy motel here in town, unwilling to accept help. My sister got herself off the bank account and they are back in "control" of their own destiny, as they have been, but without any interference. So sad but definitely the result of past and current choices.

We got our flu shots today so hopefully we will do well again through the coming flu season.

Sending a hug!!!!!!!!

Leslie - so glad your emoticon broke and you've spent time with family - nothing better!

Getting ready for dual retirement here. Loaded up Mark's office Friday and planning to hang 'artwork' today. I'm going to hang his accolades on the wall leading down to the Man Cave and the nature photos in his office.
I've decided to give the artwork the photos will replace to our Lincoln Lighthouse (bad photos, but some of my brother's artwork).

A start to the gifting the 'extra stuff' in the house - a fall and winter project when the yard work is not an option.

Kali,
What a wonderful family of girlfriends you have. Thank you for the beautiful picture. It sounds like an amazing (and cool) trip.

We are doing well. We were down in SD last weekend. Headed down again this weekend to babysit and have some fun.
We spent the afternoon/evening with the Riverside grands and kids. We picked the kids up from school, did homework, baked cookies and then had take out Mexican when mom and dad got home. It was a just because visit. We missed them.

Our weather finally cooled down today......out of the 90s/100s and into the 70s and 80s. So wonderful. I could finally walk in the middle of the morning. Im going to get some fall decorations out. I couldnt even think fall until today.

So glad you are home safely and had such a blessed trip!!!!!!!

Leslie - I hope your emoticon broke. NE had 90 degree weather while I was gone, so definitely picked the right week!

Great GF trip - 11 of us @ one house and 3 @ another:

Lots of food, wine and friendship.

Getting back into the swing of things and counting down the days until Mark's retirement.

Stay cool!

We're staying in this weekend. We're in the 100's now. Hopefully, it will break a bit this week............then hot again next weekend.

Wow, a girlfriend trip to Colorado. Absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to hear all about your adventures. Travel safely!!! And enjoy the cooler weather.

Leslie - glad your pool is still open. Too emoticon here too...
Sorry to hear about your mom and brother issues. So tough to remain objective and stand back when it's family. I finally learned my dad wasn't happy unless he was miserable and then our relationship improved dramatically. I'm sure your sis welcomes your support.

Last of the 'me' days this week as I will volunteer @ the CU Thursday and Friday. Still attending classes (Nia tomorrow and a history class Friday). Saturday night a high school GF arrives before we leave for a GF trip to Colorado. (@ least there it may be cool...)

Kali,
Thanks for the NIA information! That looks so interesting. I’m going to explore that. Wouldn’t it be great if there were classes geared to Parkinson’s!!!!

I’ve been fighting off a funk over continuing issues with my mom and brother. I’m still staying removed but in constant support of my sister. I focus on gratitude and silver linings and lessons learned! You always set a good example of that!

I had never heard of OLLI. so I’ve been exploring that in our area. So many opportunities to explore. Thank you.

We are still way too hot here. But silver lining is I can still swim in our pool. Looking forward to fall, but I’m trying not to wish the days away. I am staying present and in the moment!!!
Big Hug!!

Leslie - I had to share that I took a Nia Movement to Heal (M2H) class today as part of the OLLI program and absolutely loved it!
(Nia - Neuromuscular Integrative Action is a blend of dance movement, martial arts and yoga)

M2H uses 'classic' (harder) Nia routines as a foundation for simplified choreography performed standing or in a chair. It contains 7 cycles of Setting the Focus, Stepping In, Get Moving, Cool Down, FloorPlay, and Step Out. M2H follows The Bodys Way and includes a body awareness check at the beginning of class and a body gratitude expression at the end of class.

I'm going to see if she teaches a class that might work for Parkinsons!

Leslie - blessings right back @ you. I hope Liam feels better soon.

I feel so blessed to have found a like-minded soul to share with. You allow me to tell 'things' I'm not comfortable sharing with friends and acquaintances.

I did get the nomination off. I'm not sure it will meet their criteria, but I am sure I learned a valuable lesson. Mark 'unsuccessfully' ran for city council and the credit union was basically forced to merge, suggesting failure. Both events actually were blessings and 'prove' all is as it should be.
Volunteering @ the CU in between my OLLI classes and other fun events until the end of the month. October will be wonderful!

Hi Kali,
I hope you were able to submit the nomination for Mark's award. What a wonderful way to end his benevolent work.
I hope your CASA kid does well in treatment. I'll keep her in my good thoughts for everything to go well.
I love your "giving back" philosophy about your home. We feel the same way about our home. We have been here 43 years and it has blessed us (and Chris' grandparents before us) with so much. We thank our home often for saving us when times were tough raising the kids, when Colin was so sick as a premie, when we sent them off to college etc.... We've refinanced several times to keep afloat.

Well, I'd better get off for now. We are getting up early to head to SD again. Liam is sick with the stomach flu that is going around. We hope to meet up with Colin and Jessica in the evening before we head home. They moved in together last weekend. Their new digs are really awesome, so I want Chris to see the new place. It is only a mile from Shaun and Kirsten which is nice.
Have a good week. Sending you lots of blessings.

Leslie - sounds like a wonderful week with your family (with future promises of care and adventure!).
Sorry about Mom and brother, but it appears you and your sis have this round under control. Still sending good thoughts for the entire family and am SO thankful you have your sis.

I don't know about a 'good' gardener, but I take such pleasure seeing the yard in better shape than years past. We have been so blessed to live here (20+ years) and while it sounds silly, I want to 'give back' to both the house and landscape. I'm also learning such valuable lessons seeing the change as mature plantings die and understories grow...

Went to Omaha yesterday to move my CASA kid from her placement to a treatment center. All went well and I'm convinced this is the fastest way to get her home. They take the kids off their medications and slowly either reintroduce or find new meds that work. They may even find she doesn't need meds. Keep your fingers crossed.

Home today and hoping to (finally) complete a nomination for Mark for a NE service award. Naturally, today is the last day for submission but I was conflicted as the CU has been acquired and I didn't know what could be public. Cobalt issued a press release Monday so all is good there.

Have a wonderful holiday if I don't 'see' you before!

Hi Kali,
I completely understand the feelings around not working at the credit union. Transitions are the hardest thing. Life is full of them, but it doesn't make it easier.

My sis and I still don't know where my mom and brother are. Neither one of us is willing to call my brother. We know he will contact us when he is out of money. This is allowing us to increase our faith, patience, and forgiveness.

You are such a good gardener. Chris is really loving gardening lately. I'm not as much of an enthusiast, but I help when needed and cheer him on. Ha Ha. We don't have hostas around here, or at least I haven't seen them. Maybe we are too hot and dry? All the varieties are beautiful. I'm still laughing about your squirrels and birds. Gotta love them.

That's probably a good idea to call a handyman for grab bar installation. Some projects just need someone with the right tools and experience. I'm all about cutting stress.

I've been babysitting Paloma and Rory this week. We have been splitting our time between Riverside and Yucaipa. We have had one sleep over and tonight they are home. (mom and dad miss them) I'll go in the morning and bring them home again for another overnight tomorrow.
It has been a fun week before they start school next week. We have spent an inordinate amount of time in the pool. I think it will take me days to get un-water logged. But so much fun.
We have been bringing their dog, Kennedy, with us. He's a 10 year old terrier that Salina brought into the relationship. He loves our place and is very comfortable here so it's very easy.

Well, my friend, the silver linings are popping up everywhere these days. I'm tired but feeling very productive and helpful. My grands are so fun and growing so fast. Paloma says she will take care of me so I can see her graduate from college and be a great grandma, "if she meets a guy she wants to marry"! I told her that I will try to not be a crabby old lady.

Sending you lots of hugs and good wishes for a great rest of your week. (Your weather sounds glorious!!!)

Leslie - sorry to be MIA. Lots of yard work and no screen time.
Hope things worked out for your mom and brother and so glad you and your sis have each other as well as your friends.

Interestingly, I've felt a little guilty not working @ the CU. Makes me that much more grateful for the university allowing me to go part time before retiring.

Finished expanding a new bed to make mowing easier and remove patches of yard where only creeper grass would grow. I moved landscape fabric from an earlier bed construction to cover remaining grass (worked like a charm on the old bed) and have to laugh as the squirrels immediately started 'planting' nuts and the birds loved the worm bonanza in the old bed. 12 bags of mulch later and it looks great. I'm hopeful next year to remove the fabric and plant hostas. We have a variety that spreads like a weed. Not the variegated, so maybe not as pretty, but the extra green will be great.

Also getting the grab bar/TP dispensers installed. Two down and one to go. We're hoping to get the grab bars installed in the tub and shower, but a little concerned about cutting through ceramic tile. We have until Thanksgiving when my sis visits, but every time I step in, I'd like to have the extra support. I'm going to recontact the Handyman connection and see if they can't schedule us in.

Weather has been wet and cool - really wonderful for August and other than green grapes and tomatoes, I couldn't ask for more...

Hope all is good with you and yours!

Thank you Kali. We think they are out as of Friday after 3 days of police and work trucks. But my sis and I have stayed away. She thinks they are still there (squatting maybe?) but I don’t think the police and reverse mortgage company would allow that.
I so appreciate your support and care.
I’m so very sad but have no power over their choices as you pointed out.
I have to stay in my lane and remain grateful for my family and friends.

I am so happy for your upcoming freedom and new possibilities! Can’t wait to hear as you report changes you will be free to make.
Sending love tonight.

Leslie - Thoughts and prayers coming to your mom and brother. Amazing how some folks just need to do things their way. I guess it’s just part of the journey.
So glad you have your sis to strategize with and to find support and comfort with.

It will be a wonderful transition in a month or so for us . In the interim I am working less at the credit union and more in the yard. Totally enjoying the changes that I see and I’m hopeful that next year will see some major upgrades.; (grass would be nice…)

Wow Kali, big changes for you and Mark when he retires from the credit union. Many silver linings there. Better sleep and respiratory relief are huge!
Your humidity is a killer. It is so hard to get out and do things when you are ringing wet just stepping out the door!! I function poorly in that kind of heat! We’re in the hundreds today but I can’t complain, it’s dry.
Jan and I have done water aerobics 2 days this week. That has been a good replacement for walking. I’ve made it to yoga twice this week as well.
Today I’m having coffee with my sister. We are trying to bolster each other up as things are coming to a head with our mom and brother. They’ve refused our help (hers most recently) and today is supposed to be the eviction day. We are praying that things will play out well for them. It is a helpless feeling spending so many years not being able to reason with them. But they can’t be strong armed into logical good choices. It’s beyond sad and frustrating. Pray and wait.

Life is good and I’m grateful for all my blessings. Sending you love.

Leslie - what a wonderful emoticon week! I am SO glad you are able to spend time with friends and family and can relate to the joy of 20 degrees cooler...
We've had 97% humidity for 3 days in a row and emoticon emoticon both nights. Glad we brought the pup in as last night the 'rockin and rollin' even woke me.
School starts today but all buildings are air-conditioned, so the kids won't be melting. (I literally start to sweat just standing outside...)
Switching out chairs in Mark's office as the merger is now official and he'll be retiring next month.
emoticon The building had (and maybe still has) mold issues, so not only will he be sleeping better, hopefully his congestion will abate. Once they start the transition, I won't volunteer so I'll have my own time back too.

Hi Kali,
So glad that you have been so useful at the credit union. I loved the way you turned a seemingly negative into a positive. Missing yoga afforded you other opportunities that might not have happened.
My friend Sue started playing Mahjongg when she moved down to Carlsbad. She has found it a great way to meet new friends. She had lived here in Yucaipa for decades and needed new social outlets.
It has been a good birthday week. Monday I had lunch with my neighbor, Kathy for our birthdays. We have been neighbors and friends for 43 years. Many birthdays!!!! Tuesday and Wednesday the Riverside grandkids were here. Lots of swimming, park, and pizza. So much fun. Thursday my friend Jan and I went to water aerobics and then to a new coffee house in our area. Great morning of exercise, chatting and good coffee. Today Chris and I went to Big Bear for a birthday lunch. It was so pretty up there and 20 degrees cooler. Tomorrow we meet the boys and families in Temecula for brunch. So Id call that a real stretching of birthday fun!

I hope you are doing well this week. You are right, it would be very cool to meet in person. Maybe that will happen.

Leslie - I too treasure our friendship and with all of my sis' kids out west, we may even be blessed with a face-face meeting!
So sorry your health 'kicked-up' but it sounds like you had a wonderful time with the family. (I'm happy you are parking those buns and taking it easy for a while...) Also glad you're keeping your colonoscopy scheduled - hopefully everything will be fine for another two years.
I can't remember if we got a certified copy of our birth certificates because we keep renewing our passports (not that we're world travelers, but it's nice to have them.) May be an indication of the world we live in - tightening security from the feds while private industry is open to hackers. Hope you're not a Capital One client...

The roofing went very well. We were afraid they'd covered a plumbing vent until I met with the project manager yesterday and we saw it on the garage roof.
emoticon No need to tear into a waterproof system.
They do however need to come back for some touch-ups. The 'scuppers' they built were really just openings in the parapet and the water needs to discharge away from the house. They'll reconstruct something that extends @ least 3" away. Also the screws they used protrude through our tongue and groove wood ceiling, so they'll need to cut them off and do a little patch and stain work. They also rolled the membrane out on the lawn, so we have a patch of 'white' grass that we're watering heavily to green up. I told the PM no big deal, but there may be some folks who are persnickety about their lawns, so he plans to remind his crew.
Volunteering @ the Credit Union again today. (Insures I get Mark here.) His loan officer tried to contact him yesterday and called me, so after trying his cell and house phone I headed home to roust him. (His cell phone was on silent...) Mark needed to meet with some folks and gather info for an August 9 meeting. The end result was I missed yoga, but as with everything, the outcome was perfect. I was able to round-up several weed patches, meet with the roofing contractor and clean up in time for my facial - @ least one of which would have occurred if "my" plans were not altered. Gotta love going with the flow! Blessings abound.
Take care and I'm sending thoughts for a good colonoscopy!

Hi Kali,
I hope your roofing went well. Is it done? I didn't know those drains were called scuppers. Your plants under the eaves will thank you.
I'm glad that you have been going to yoga. I hope you soon get an instructor who has better teaching skills.
How wonderful that you have a way to share the emotional burden that accompanies your dedicated CASA work. Hope the session was useful. I always thought that special ed. teachers should have had a better support system, probably for some of the same reasons.

Last week was wonderful and very busy. When I got home Friday afternoon I felt punk and woke up Saturday with a really painful UTI (again). I just passed a kidney stone last week so that often provokes it. I took myself swiftly to urgent care and got some strong meds. I was worried about a Sunday trip we had planned with Ryan and fam to Alamitos Bay in Long Beach where I spent many summers as a kid and where we took our boys when they were kids. My dad grew up in Long Beach and used to life guard at that same bay. So much history. I didn't want to ruin the trip with a UTI. We went and had a great day playing and taking so many pictures, but I think I over did. When we got home I was so nauseated and had a fever.
I guess the compilation of the busy week and weekend caught up with me. But what a way to go! Ha Ha.
However, I have a colonoscopy on Thursday with prep on Wednesday so I cancelled several things I had planned this week and just parked my buns to get well. I REALLY didn't want to reschedule that. My GI doc is keeping track of my Ulcerative Colitis so I have these every 2 years from now on. Small price to pay to prevent cancer and other complications.

We didn't get our passports last week because we have to get certified copies of our birth certificates from the county where we were born. I was born in Whittier and he was born in Inglewood so both L.A. County. Luckily, except for getting a form notarized proving we are who we are, it could all be done on line.
We have always used our original birth certificates from the hospitals where we were born, for social security matters, when I had my social security # stolen, when we signed up for Medicare etc........ oh well. So now we will have them. They should come mid August and then I'll make another appt. for the passports and pictures.

Anyway, life is good and I'm grateful for you and our Spark friendship. Life has had so many silver linings these past few weeks. One example is the amazing Urgent Care doc that was so cheerful and helpful. She was young, enthusiastic, caring, and helpful. I love looking for those silver linings.

I try to hold fast to the truth that a full and thankful heart cannot entertain great conceits. When brimming with gratitude, one's heartbeat must surely result in outgoing love, the finest emotion that we can ever know. AS BILL SEES IT

Love the cruise and April should be perfect. We stayed in a house on the 'Riviera' and thoroughly enjoyed the beach and surroundings. You'll have to tell me about the trip when you get home. We're toying with a Viking Mediterranean cruise, but 1,000 people seems huge to us.
Your yoga workshop sounds wonderful. We have a new 'instructor' @ Thrive and while a delightful young man, a yoga leader he's not. Hoping to get a different person in August...
So glad Liam is so close. You will have a marvelous relationship as he grows and how fun to 'catch up' with friends. We'll be doing the same as soon as Mark retires.

Flat roof is being replaced, so Liz is @ Camp Bow Wow. I am so looking forward to directing the rain as opposed to leaking through the fascia. We're having scuppers installed, so the beds that are not included as part of the sprinkler system (and under the eaves) will get some water too.
Attending a Reflective Practice session this afternoon. It's supposed to help us collaborate with others and sort through the varied emotions that can accompany our CASA responsibilities and move to possible solutions or next steps. Walking there, so more steps!

Hi Kali,
Wow, I hope you had that break in the weather you hoped for. Spraying those aborvitae is quite a task. Those worms sound pesky! I remember when you lost the other one. I remember you talking to Wispy about it. Hope the treatment works. This house maintenance is never ending, isn't it?
We are now looking at getting the pool skimmer replaced. We think that is where the last leak is. But the price tag for anything "pool" is always so high. Oh well, it's a blessing in the heat and good exercise.

My friend Jan and I drove to Temecula today to meet our friend Sue. We went to a french pastry/coffee & tea place. So fun and yummy. We had such a great day of girl talk/therapy.

Tomorrow we are going to get passports. I've finally scheduled a cruise for us next April down the Baha peninsula and up to the Mexican Riviera. We've never done a cruise and Chris said "yes" right away when I suggested it. Shock! It leaves out of San Diego and is 12 days long. I'm hoping it will be as fun as it looks. The ship is small (about 1,000 people) so that appealed to Chris. Yay!!!

Wednesday I have another yoga workshop. It is a Yin Yoga workshop. I went to one on Saturday as well. They are at my yoga instructor's house so the group is smaller and it is more intimate. Really fun.

Thursday I'm going to San Diego to babysit Liam. Looking forward to that!!!!

And Friday I'm having coffee with a friend that I have neglected since Chris' cancer. So I got in touch and am looking forward to reconnecting. She's a sweet lady and a friend worth the investment.

I hope you are having a good start to your week!!!

Leslie - emoticon amazing how wonderful it feels when we're not queen of the world...

Looking forward to a break in the weather as early as Sunday, (we've yet to hit a golf ball...)
Sprayed the arborvitae this morning as I found bagworms Wednesday (too hot and windy last night). next application is in 7-14 days, but I'm going with the 7 as well as checking the plants. We lost a tall full one two years ago... New plan is to treat systemically early and then 1st week in July to treat topically. Still hoping to get the cracks in the walks and drive filled, but that too may have to wait.
Dinner with friends tonight and meal planning + shopping tomorrow!

Sending my best wishes your way.

Kali,
I so enjoy chatting with you too!!!!!
I love your candor about your state of denial. I firmly believe that we get there when we get there. No one can decide for us.

Yes, indeed, we can only change ourselves and take care of what is right in front of us. Whew! Such a relief to not be in charge of the world. Ha Ha.

Sending you wishes for a wonderful weekend. Stay cool.

Leslie - What a wonderful week! So glad you are there for the kids and grands. I am so proud of you for working on your 12 steps - someday I might join you, but as of the present I am still stuck in denial...
Glad you and your sis have each other - part of my journey is learning I all can influence is myself (and sometimes not even that.)

Colonoscopies are a drab, but I know you'll pass yours with flying colors and emoticon on your yoga. I've let mine go for the 2 weeks I'm 'working' full-time, but next Tuesday here I come!

Always love chatting and blessings coming your way.

Hi Kali,
I loved hearing about your trip. It sounded packed with fun and family. I'm sad that your sis wasn't able to join in too much. She seems to be struggling a bit. I hope a future trip works out for you after the credit union settles. I can only imagine how tiring it is for Mark (and for you taking on extra driving) but God bless him for always being willing to stay in action. I applaud you both.

Wow, your genealogy search is fascinating! I've never done that. What a great Christmas present.......the gift of ancestry. So interesting.

I hope you are not dying in the heat (and humidity?) Good plan to get inside jobs done. The grab bar/ t.p. holder sounds like a great idea. The patching and painting is always a pain, but I hope you made progress there.

Our week was as busy and hectic and fun as I thought. We babysat for Ryan and Salina on Wed. so he could have a growth removed from his lower eye lid that has been there for a long time and grown in the past year. Waiting for biopsy results is always worrisome, but I am always positive that it will be good. Our concert on Thursday night in San Diego with Shaun and Kirsten was really fun. It was at a small venue at Humphrie's on the Bay, an old hotel on Shelter Island. It's an outdoor venue with such a pretty view of the harbor and the sunset. Our youngest son and girlfriend babysat for Liam. That was cool.
Friday Shaun, Kirsten, and Liam came home to Yucaipa and stayed for the weekend. The Pride Parade goes by their new apartment and blocks them in for several days with roads closed. So that was fun. Ryan and family joined us for a bbq and swim and play day on Saturday. By Sunday afternoon we were bushed but happy.
So many silver linings having the kids and grands together.
Monday I worked with one of my sponsees on the steps. Always good for both sponsor and sponsee to review the 12 steps of recovery.
Tuesday I spent 3 hours with my friend Jan at a coffee shop catching up. She is back from a 6 week motor home road trip. Tomorrow we will go to a water aerobics class together that she has recently started. Fun!
My sis and I have gotten together several times to keep our heads on straight regarding my mom and brother. She has realized, again, that she cannot help the situation. So she is pulling out and we are just praying and staying close to one another.
I have had many regular doc appts (GP, gastroenterology, gynecology, opthalmology).......I have a colonoscopy scheduled for Aug.1st. My ulcerative colitis requires one every 2 years. Bah Humbug. But, I'm grateful to keep on top of things.

Next week is turning out to be very busy again, but like you said, isn't it nice when life gets in the way of computer time. Silver lining: Gratitude for being busy and healthy enough to keep up with all that life offers.

I've stayed regular with my yoga and have several workshops at my yoga instructors house next week in addition to the classes at the gym. It has been hot here too, but I'm walking around the edges when it is cool enough, keeping up with my monthly miles.

I'm staying in gratitude for all that I have been given and all the blessings I life has bestowed on me. I'm sending you and Mark lots of love.
Hug,
Leslie

Leslie - good to hear from you - don't you love it when life gets in the way of the computer?

We're in for a hot spell - 100s by the end of the week and I'm not looking forward to it. Good news is I (finally) picked up the correct material to skim coat the patch from removing the toilet paper holder, so I can work on getting the new grab bar/holder in place. It's really attractive and for the 2 bathrooms with white walls will be an easy addition. The colored wall repair will be a bit more of a challenge.

I'm also deep diving into genealogy - (the kid's Chistmas presents) and am finding all kinds of treasures. I think this is my BIL's ancestor

Plus I found a great place to research Swedish heritage: www.mcphersoncountyks.us/20/Old-Mill

Wow - Leslie - lots to catch up on.

Hope all is good with your mom and brother. Glad your sis is there to assist if there are problems.
Sounds like the birthday boy was in charge and had a ball. Perfect for a 6 year old.
Hope the stone is passed and pump replaced. (We certainly enjoyed the pool over the 4th and with no rain, I'm sure you love yours.)
How'd your new 'do' turn out? Did you keep your hair long?

Our trip to MN was good. I drove most of the way and hit a rainstorm that required emergency blinkers and 35 mph speeds on the interstate. (Thank goodness most cars pulled off the road...) Mark drove the mornings of both going and coming, but was so tired driving home he had trouble staying in his lane. He wasn't happy, but fell asleep almost immediately after we switched drivers. (I'm not looking forward to the day he can't drive...) We stopped several times on the way back (7 hour trip) so he could stretch his legs, but 5 days (2 in transit) took its toll on him...
My sis managed to 'hurt her back' the day before we arrived, but part of me thinks it was an excuse for no physical progress. The good thing is she will go back to her mother in-law's condo some time this week and will be able to use the pool to build up some strength. She stayed upstairs most of the trip with meals on a tray, but did come down for dinner and fireworks on the 4th, our last evening and morning. We're all hopeful they will sell their home (as is as it is falling apart) and move to Oregon or Washington to be closer to grandchildren.
The rest of us went to a minor league baseball game the 3rd. Bleacher seats, but after the game the kids had access to the field. (too long a day for Mark) They took video of the fireworks show and got back to their airb&b around midnight.
They slept in (perfect for Portland time) and came over for a late morning swim before lunch. A few rain showers cleared (hot and humid) and we were able to set off fireworks in the backyard. The 5th was a pool day and the 6th we went to Mall of America. I went on the swings ride with Wyatt and that was enough for me - Gpa and Dad went with Katy on the shear drop ride and it made me woozy just watching them. We ate a late lunch @ the Rainforest and headed back to my sis who came down to see everyone.
All in all a good trip. I hope to head back up once the credit union is fully staffed (critical employee on vacation until the 22nd) and help with any remaining boxes, but we shall see...

Hope all is good in CA and glad you are far from the shaking!

Checking in again, Kali. Hope you are well!
I’m headed out to run errands and then get my hair cut and highlighted. It’s been since September so I’m long overdue! Silver lining, my hair is longer so I have some options. We’ll see.

Hi Kali,
I missed you!!!!
The party weekend went well and was so much fun. We packed so much into 2 days.......all at Rory’s direction.....mostly, ha h.
He kept saying, “I’m in charge, right grandma?”
My babysitting for Liam was really fun and helpful. I came home on Friday, went to Riverside on Saturday to celebrate father’s day with Ryan and fam. And then returned to SD to help with the move. I watched Liam in the hotel to keep him out of the way. We normally don’t get a hotel but the move necessitated it. We did lots of walks to the mall near the hotel. We got home Tuesday evening.
I’m getting over a UTI and a kidney stone passing but I think life is getting back on track. Our pool pump died for good so we are getting a replacement on Monday. Oh well.

Glad you got some weeds pulled. I love the “embarrassing ones” comment. I’m jealous of your rain. But I’m sure you could do without it.

Lots of silver linings to the past two weeks.
Number 1 is that Chris and I kept working together without ego to do what would help our kids. Number 2 is we know that now is the time for recuperation, self care, and our own “to do’s”.
Sending you and your dear hubby peace and love. Have a great Friday and weekend!!!

Leslie - how wonderful that Rory chose grandma's house to celebrate! Precious and special.
Sorry to hear about immediate family issues - I don't think there are many of us who would 'pick' our families, which always makes me think adopted kids are special.

Yard is getting into shape, but I'm 'officially' a teller @ the credit union (have my own cash drawer), so am carving out time to continue maintenance. (The weeds are not under control, but @ least the mowing is...)

We're going to MN while the Portland family is visiting over the 4th. My sis has not been traveling (missed the last trip out west) and it's tough on Mark, so this may be our chance to see them this year. We'll see.

Have fun with Liam and we'll see you when you get home!

Kali,
You have really been a yard warrior. I bet your yard is beautiful. That is great exercise!
How fun that you will see your sis and family over the 4th. So am I understanding that you will travel to Oregon?

Life is good here. Lots of drama with my mom and addicted brother. My sis and I are always waiting for the next shoe to drop and a very big one has. We are taking things one step and one day at a time.

But, my boys and grands are all good. Our grandson, Rory, turns 6 on Thursday. And he was given a choice of where he wanted to go and what he wanted to do. (His sister chose Sea World and San Diego for her 8th birthday in March). My son said Rory didn't even hesitate and requested coming to our house to stay over night. He says he wants an ice cream cake like his cousin Liam had but wants it to say "Happy Birthday Rory" and not "Happy Birthday Liam". Ha Ha. He wants to eat pizza and go to the park. We are blown away and kind of chuckling that some day he'll look back and wonder why Paloma got San Diego and he got Yucaipa. Of course we are thrilled and getting ready for a fun weekend.

On Monday I'll be in SD again for 3 days watching Liam. It's my oldest son's last week of school and Liam's day care is closed. Shaun and Kirsten are grateful and I will have lots of fun. He's 14 months old now and really a character.

So if I'm MIA for a while, you'll know why. Lots of things to be grateful for despite the chaos of biological family.

Sending you love.

Leslie - I love sharing your family with you. emoticon
Definitely an advantage to live in CA - weather and infrastructure!
Glad you took some me time to rest and recuperate.

MIA due to yard work - extended some of the beds and added paving stones to the path to the backyard. We also took tree debris to the landfilll and reloaded the trailer with remaining piles. Good news as I can keep the branches under control (hopefully not famous last words...)
We decided not get pulverized topsoil (too heavy for the lawn tractor to move) so will be going back to bags. Definitely easier to handle.

Made reservations for Liz over the 4th and looking forward to seeing the Minnesota and Oregon Moelters. Now that my oldest niece is headed to Portland, all three of my sis' kids are on the west coast.
Who knows, maybe that family will end up westerners!

Oh my Kali, you really turned those ribs from lemons to lemonade! You created your own silver lining. What did you end up eating?

Losing things....................wow do we identify with that!!! Good idea to meditate and relax to remember things. Silver lining....we learn humility!!

I’m back from SD. I enjoyed Monday afternoon with Colin. Jess, and her cute dogs. We ate at Balboa Park and walked all around. Very crowed of course (holiday) but still fun.
Had fun with Shaun and Kirsten and of course Liam when I babysit yesterday. Really nice get away again.

I’m catching up today and resting. I’ll get out for a walk later to keep from being a total sloth!
Big hug to you and your cute Mark. Loved the picture!

Leslie - emoticon much appreciated.
Don't you love great emoticon - and clear air?
Our Memorial Day weekend was full of the fluffy ones.

emoticon we tried to smoke some short ribs in celebration

and they ended up being the wrong 'cut'.
So we decided to use our overcooked ribs for bone broth. I plan to strain what I have and take it through one more cycle before freezing it. Wasn't picky about the contents - beef, pork and chicken bones are in the mix!

Started the morning with lost keys. I've been 'meditating' on the treadmill while closing my eyes (and improving my balance) and sure enough, I remembered the last time I used the car and where they might be. I borrowed Mark's keys to take Liz to Camp Bow Wow and Yoga Flow, but will look for them when I get home.

Oh my Kali,
Im so sorry for the uncertainty surrounding the credit union. Breathing is the one thing we have, but sometimes that does not seem like enough. So I will send up prayers and best thoughts for some answers to arrive.............hopefully sooner than later!

Im planning on a weekend of catch up around here. We are supposed to get more rain on Sunday. So Ill get outside tasks done tomorrow.

Silver lining.....our temps are cool and the air is so clear with great clouds.

Leslie - so glad to hear your life is full and happy! Give Liam a hug for me.
emoticon emoticon emoticon is the story of life here too.

We found out yesterday that the credit union's growth is @ a standstill. We applied for expansion of footprint and were hoping for a merger to provide members more services, but both were rejected. Time to move to Plan 'D', but we're not sure what that is...
Gotta believe all will be for the best, but the uncertainty is difficult.
Breathing in and breathing out and sending love your way.

Hi Kali,
This will be short. It has been a busy week, but a good one.
Your soul card activity with the Early Birds sounded so wonderful and inspirational. Yes indeed, living and learning rocks!

This morning I went to the San Bernardino Justice Center to do my jury duty service. My panel was dismissed in the afternoon. I was glad as I have so many obligations until the end of June.

Shaun called this afternoon and humbly asked if I'd babysit tomorrow (San Diego) as Liam has a fever and can't go to day care. I'm already scheduled to go down on Tues. (day care closed) so he was reluctant to ask. But, I was happy to oblige. It will be fun to spend time with Liam. He's growing so fast.

Life is good here in CA. Sending you wishes for a good end to your week. How is your weather? We are raining, raining, raining. I'm not complaining!!!! Silver linings abound with cooler temps and very happy plants!

Leslie - so glad you've found a pool guy. I hope you can give him great reviews. How fun to take two cars (and both be well enough to drive them). Hope your yoga session was great.
Sounds like your sponsee knows how to treat friends and sponsors. Glad she's sharing the time with you.
I so agree about the time we spend with our mate. I always seem to learn more about Mark and myself every day...

Yesterday started with Early Birds and 'soul cards'. We found images that spoke to us and made and then shared our cards. Mine was a morel mushroom background with LL Bean boots, a Christmas garland and Roman inscribed column. I wasn't sure what drew me to the images, but as I put it together, it occurred to me that my dad took me mushroom hunting, Mark took me camping and I took myself through an education and career in architecture. Gotta love the living and learning that others (and myself) enjoy...
After a morning of man-jongg practice, I worked in the yard. One more pile of limbs loaded (too wet to move it this morning) and backyard mowed. Dinner with the gang to celebrate another friend's retirement and stormy weather overnight.
A beautiful morning allowed us to repair the outside kennel (snow load destroyed the cover), clean out the shed, find the garage light switch (after trying to change 2 bulbs) and mow + trim the front. We moved some decorative rocks in front of a downspout hoping stop some water runoff, repaired part of our stone walkway and tackled a few weeds. Hoping to accomplish more tomorrow, but right now we're relaxing after our Saturday cheeseburger. (Honest Abes - fungus amongus - yum!)
Hope all is good in CA!

Kali,
Congratulations on 7 years cancer free. Such great news. And how wonderful that the CBD gummies may be working for Mark. Fingers crossed on that!!!

The wedding looks like it was really beautiful. I've never been to a beach wedding. Looks fun!

I will keep your CASA kid in my good thoughts. I hope a solution presents itself.

The leak detection went well. We really liked this guy. He's local and starting up his own business after having worked for a big company for many years. He looked like he was about our boys' age, or somewhere around there. He was so thorough and didn't find anything in the underground pipes......YAY! He sealed up some leaks in the pump/motor and found a small leak in the skimmer that he sealed with epoxy. He gave us some good advice to see if our pool is losing more water than should be expected by evaporation (He called it the bucket test). So we will call him in a few days after we complete our bucket test. If all is well, he won't do any further tests. He spent over 2 hours and only charged us for 1 hour. We gave him $20 dollars for lunch.

Tomorrow we are going to our grandson's last baseball game. The other grand parents will be there so they are having pizza at the house to celebrate. Then I am heading straight to a yoga workshop that I signed up for months ago. Chris and I will take separate vehicles as I will have to go from Riverside to San Bernardino right after lunch.

Sunday a friend (sponsee) is treating several of us to breakfast and a massage at her favorite massage place to thank us for our friendship. Nice!

I just loved the Captain Coreli's Mandolin quote. What a beautiful way to see our "mature" relationships. All those roots over all those years growing together to join as one tree! So great!

That is a definite silver lining of putting in the time and work and the blood, sweat, and tears.

Leslie - a people/puppy lunch - how fun!

I too hope Colin and Jess continue on their journey together. I listened to David Brooks quote from the book "Captain Corelis Mandolin" - Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it. We had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms had fallen from our branches, we found that we were one tree and not two.

Hope your leak detection and repair person is reasonable and the pool will be back in good order soon. Must be a blessing with your hot summers.

The FL wedding was OK - poor Mark was so tired from flying he spent the day Saturday @ the condo so he could attend the wedding. It was beautiful.

CASA kid is failing, but we have another team meeting (to be set) before the hearing @ which time we may be able to convince her to change. I plan to make a recommendation to the judge that we find a different placement for her in town - something like a group home where there is structure (and cleanliness) - biggest problem is she loves her dog and I don't know of many places that would take an untrained pet that already bit a couple people...

On the good news side:
7 year cancer free emoticon checkup this morning AND Mark had his first full 8 hour sleep last night! I purchased some CBD gummies (50 mg) and he took one last night, so we may have found something that works. Keep your fingers crossed!

Hi Kali,
Ahhhhh, family tensions. I can relate to that!!! I hope it works out for your niece and husband and friends visiting and enjoying a football game.

Wow, Florida for a wedding. Hope it was a fun weekend. Traveling can be tiring so I hope you have had time to rest and catch up.

Sorry about your CASA kid. By now you have some more information. I hope things are looking up.

Friday I babysat for the Riverside grand kids. They had a day off school. I told them it was like old times except they do everything for themselves now. So fun.

Saturday we went to Temecula to meet Shaun, Kirsten, Liam, and Colin and Jessica and her dogs for lunch. We found a restaurant with a great menu that welcomes dogs. It was a fun Mother's Day lunch. Colin, Jess, and the dogs came home to Yucaipa for an overnight. Then Sunday morning she and Colin went to Corona to her mom and stepdad's home. They invited us to join in the afternoon for dinner and to meet her parents and family. That was a cool big step for them. We privately hope that they will stay together and continue to enjoy life together, whatever that looks like for them.

Monday my friend Jan and I went to our other friend's home in Carlsbad. We had a great lunch and the usual non-stop talking. I love them so much. We are like sisters who don't fight or have "issues". Ha ha.

The rest of the week has been more catching up, appointments, and errands. Tomorrow we finally have a leak detection guy to help us solve our pool leak. I hope he's reasonable because he also does repair work. Our heating and air guy came for our 6 month check up and gave us this guys name. Fingers crossed he will be good. He was so friendly on the phone.
Silver lining is he is local and we love to support our local businesses and vendors.

We are having lots of cool weather and today some great rain. We are loving Gray May!!!!!

Leslie - so glad to hear you are there for Chris and the retreat was all you expected.
I can totally relate to the catch up week. We just returned from a weekend in FL for our nephew's wedding and the cupboard is bare...

Getting 'pressure' to visit Atlanta as Mark's dad is declining and no longer can travel, but we're inclined to pass as during the last visit, we couldn't communicate as he wouldn't wear his hearing aides. We 'always' travel there as anyone coming to NE, so there's some family tension occurring... The good news is my niece and her husband may want to come out for a football game with 2 other couples. (I sent AirB&B info as hotel rates double as well as let them know I wouldn't be a source for tickets after retiring) I'm hopeful they'll come and we can treat them all to a Friday night meal.

Looks like the weather is about to settle in to a spring pattern, so hoping to get in some yard work this week. We shall see as my CASA kid is reverting to old habits. Wrap around meeting tomorrow so I'll know more then.
Ditto on the sending love my emoticon

Good morning Kali,
I’m sitting in another medical office with Chris. Yesterday was another root canal for him. Today is eye exam where I have to be the driver. So I’m catching up on emails and posts.
I so empathize with the decisions you have ahead when it comes to downsizing/relocating. It is always on our minds too. So many unknowns. Your early bird discussion sounds like it was very interesting! I have faith that the right thing will appear for you and Mark at the right time! You both deserve the best!

The yoga retreat was as amazing as we all hoped. The weather in Big Bear was gorgeous. It was a renewal for my soul, for sure.

This week for me is catching up, appointments, cleaning for the weekend lunch with a friend, coffee with another friend and a regular yoga schedule. Can’t complain about that.
Silver linings and rainbows abound because I’m always looking for them. Counting my blessings.
Sending you love!
