I have my first FULL marathon on Saturday, March 3rd. Although I feel unprepared, I am looking forward to the trail run at a Texas state park. I am hoping the scenery will keep me entertained instead of the usual "road" races I run.

Wish me luck!!

Just got home from Myrtle Beach after running in the marathon on Saturday. Had a great day and a great race for myself with a 3:39:37! Beat my Nov. marathon time by 28 minutes and was able to get a Boston qualifying time! Gotta figure out my plans for the next race now!! :)

Running a 5k Jan 21st and another Feb 4th. Then my first HM Feb 11th. Not any full marathons coming up in Florida that I know of until next fall. Too hot in the summer I suppose. There is a "Dances With Dirt" full marathon in Dade City in March. One of those where you get muddy and wet, run across some logs, and some other surprise obstacles. Sounds like it's easy to get lost on that one as well, judging by others comments.
Not sure I want to do my first marathon that way, but it looks like fun, and I really don't want to wait until next September for my first Marathon. Wonder if anyone has any thoughts on doing a "wacky" Marathon for the first one.

My first Marathon will be the Wisconsin Marathon in Kenosha on May 5. I was originally going to run the Half Marathon, but I ran my first Half Marathon in November and think with the extra training, I'll be ready for the full in May. Simply making the decision was a bigger challenge than I would have guessed. Less than a year ago, if anyone had suggested I would even be THINKING about doing this I would have questioned their sanity. Now I only question my OWN sanity.

I'm new here. I ran the Green Mountain Marathon (Vermont) last month - my first and my wife's
4th. I struggled through and felt good enough and crazy enough to sign up for another one. Going to run the Pittsburgh marathon on May 6, 2012.. back to the city I grew up in but haven't been back to in over 25 yrs. Looking forward to but will need lots of motivation and encouragement to train through the winter.

Has anyone run the Kiawah Island (right outside of Charleston, SC) marathon? I'm starting to think about next year's race calendar, and I'm curious if this is a good one. I just did the Marine Corps, and it was so amazing that I'm worried that the next one won't be as exciting! There was so much to see, and such great spectator support that the time just flew by. I'm nervous about the idea of a less stimulating race!
Thoughts, comments, suggestions? Thx.

Karalyn-Welcome to the 'other side' LOL!!! Congratulations. I hope you feel the pride of finishing a marathon for a long time!

I finished my 2nd Half Marathon of the season (hartford) and my 8th Half Marathon. No full marathons for me this year, i just can't find the time to train. ING Hartford is a GREAT race course, flawless organization, and plenty of portopotties, water stations, and fantastic volunteers.

My First Marathon Race Report : Portland, OR : 10/09/11 : unofficial time about 7:08:00 :

I've lived in Virginia for the past 8 years and was so glad I could do this marathon because I grew up in Portland and the race went across my neighborhood bridge that my friends and I hung out at, it also went by the place I had my prom and the place I had my graduation.

I'm so proud of myself for completing my first marathon. I didn't train very well and never did more than 17 miles during my training. I had 4 friend/family stops along the route (so glad I had volunteers for this) and I ended up hitting the aid stations 4 times due to blisters. So those 8 stops definitely cost me some time. Once I hit half way I was happy at how good I felt (considering my last half marathon was a struggle from mile 10 to 13). Around mile 22 the walking increased and by mile 24 I was walking 90% of each mile ... I was in pain and just felt off so I didn't want to over do it. Once I hit the corner at mile 26 I put my mp3 player away and started jogging to the finish line. Oh boy was that rough. Overall I did a lot more walking than I wanted but that's okay with me cause I completed it and that's good enough for me. Can't say I see another marathon in my future but it was a very fun, exciting and unique experience.

Switched from the Rock and Roll St Louis full (October 23) to the half when my 15 year old daughter wanted to train for the half. I did not want to have to leave her 8 miles in where the half and full split. This is her first half and prior to starting our training program she had never run more than 4 miles. This past Saturday we did 11. My idea was that I would keep up mileage for a full so that I could do another full later in the fall. Well that did not work! As soon as I was not signed up for a full and knew I was only doing the half my mileage went way down. That is what always happens if I am not registered for a race!. Now I am looking for an great Spring marathon to do. Any suggestions?

HOT and HUMID day. Still not 100% with the nagging hamstring still hindering my speed. I held on though to finish under 2 hrs at least. Was using the race for marathon training.
Next races:
Applefest Half Marathon 10/1
Trots for Special Tots 5k 10/2
Baystate Marathon 10/16

Will take a break from running probably through out the rest of October and try to return in November. Will see how the body holds up after marathon #2 of the year!

I've been away from Spark for a while, but am back, trying to lose some weight and stuff. Proud to say I have been injury free for ONE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am running the Columbus marathon on October 16, and have my 20 mile training run on Sunday morning. My goal is to go under 5 hours (wouldn't be a PR, but since I spent about two years hurt, I'm OK with just a little under 5 hours)

I'm training for the Rock N Roll Savannah marathon Nov. 5th. I ran the Boston Marathon (officially, but as a charity money raiser) back in 1995, but stopped running right after. Started back up this past February from scratch and ran the Rock N Roll Nashville half in April. Took off a month in July due to nagging hip issues. Still on course ( I think!) for the full in November, but at any time during this training phase I don't feel like I can do the full safely, I'll drop to the half. I really, really want to do this!

Debdog, have fun in Maui! And it's your first full, too? My first full was done in a locale nowhere near as exotic as Hawaii! Can't wait to hear all about it,too.

Training for the Goofy Challenge in January. Ran first marathon at age 52 and have done 6 and several more 1/2's. It should get interesting right about the time the temps drop to -25 or colder... I am not fond of the treadmill. We have an indoor track which might come in handy. Like to run early in the morning. I see that a few folks here are doing the Flying Monkey. I just met a lady in my Road Runner's club who is doing that, too. Apparently it's a small race that sold out in 3mins, but it's supposed to be awesome! Good luck!

July 9th- Berna Great Legs 5k-24:12
July 30th Carver 5 miler-39:38
August 2nd Yankee Home Coming 10 Miler 1:22:26

So above race reports- I have been battling a tough hamstring injury I would say since May Maybe June? I forget really as I tried to ignore it but i am realizing its more and more effecting me- speed wise. The results above are all ok- not my best, but in the range i like. The 10 miler most especially since I ran it last year - just 4 seconds faster so that is amazing. I think I would have ran faster THIS year if the pain wasn't as bad as it was out through miles 6-9. OOF- my butt felt like someone was stabbing me. Its only the left glute/hamstring range. I am going to try a sports massage- see if they can do anything. I have been icing, resting- no running from-Wed through Fri this week. I ran yesterday- only 3.19 total miles and boot camp. Hopefully I will see some changes as one more marathon is on my horizon for OCtober. I am only up to 10 miles. GULP

It hasn't really sunk in yet that I did a marathon last weekend. Maybe it's because I signed up close to the event and spent the next 3 weeks or so telling myself, in no uncertain terms, "It's a training run, it's a training run, I won't even do the whole thing!"

Of course, I DID do the whole thing; I did NOT run/walk as much as I had planned; but I did at least hold back the pace somewhat and walk some in the last 8 miles. The net result was a time not one of my slowest (4:48, just 30 seconds slower than my last in Tucson last December) and a SWEET recovery (whereas Tucson left me more sore than I have ever been in my life and for longer). In fact, I wasn't even sore at all by Tuesday (usually my worst day). This was definitely a good race in terms of impact (!!!) and hopefully will leave me in good shape to train for the "real" one this fall. (Note to self: no matter what you tell yourself about "training" and "holding back," all marathons are "real" and none are "easy"! :))

Race report... 1/2 Sauer, 1/2 Kraut in NE Philly, PA (Penny Pack Park)
My basic feeling is that it's a nicely run event (despite the 30 min start delay) and very low-key with a small race feel, which I like. Aside from the potential for horribly hot weather in June (for which they prepare and warn you repeatedly), it's one I'd definitely do again. We *didn't* get the worst of the weather this year and it was fun running on the shaded paths. I'd love to see them do a repeat in September/October and get to run the course in 50s-60s weather!

Random observations are below...

“Mostly flat” was a bit of a joke. There were several small, steep hills followed by the equivalent short, steep downhill plus more of a hill in the trail section. Luckily, they were all in the 30 – 60 second range. Of course, several * 4 (since it was at out and back, so I got to see them once from each direction on each loop) = too many. I have a sneaking suspicion that, on a nice, cool, fall day, I might have thought of them as “interesting” and “variation” but on a warm day, there was some “waaaaah” (especially the downhills as I got farther into the race). Still not sure I can claim it was "HILLY" but at least I can say it wasn't flat.

Logistics. Not great. My hotel was NOT within walking distance, which meant a 4:30am arising to leave by 5:30 to get on a bus from the German center (restaurant, etc.) where the post-race party was to the park. I did the bus since there are only 200 parking spots at the park itself. As it turns out, many were still open when I got there, so I could have parked there. I wish I had (and would in the future), because… I had almost an hour and a half to kill until race start once I got there. I wouldn’t have gone so early except… my hotel (uh, inn, motel) doesn’t put coffee out until 7:30am! And I NEED coffee to, um, make things happen. And I wanted things to happen PRE-RACE. So I got going as early as I could to get a coffee from McDs to drink on the way to the German center and then on the bus.

Plus I had a not so perfect “day before the race” – I went to a company picnic for a few hours and walked around a lot, was in the sun some, ate hamburgers and hotdogs and cotton candy, etc. I’m sure that was weighing on me a bit at least to start the race!

Oh, and that “almost an hour and a half to kill” before race time? I spent most of it walking around, standing around, even doing some warmup running (almost a mile total) to “make things happen,” and then standing in the porta john line. Basically, I went to the john, did some walking or running, got back in line. Oh, and it turned into 2 hours because they started 30 minutes late to give 3 buses time to arrive late. So, if I *had* driven and parked my car, I could have just let the seats down and lain down while waiting. So, I’d do it differently if I did it again.

Weather? As good as it gets for June – 60s to high 70s/low 80s over the course of the run, shady almost the entire way, along a creek for extra cooling. And it was even cloudy with a nice breeze a lot of the time (especially cool coming off the creek when the path went right by it). But you know what? 70s are still warm. If you run hard enough, you could even call it hot.

I got bitten or stung on the calf around mile 4 – I think stung because I got that sharp pain from the area over and over throughout the rest of the race (continuing until now). My housemate felt the area and didn't think the stinger got left behind. I wonder if wearing compression socks during and after (for recovery) the race caused it by not allowing a normal swelling reaction?

It was mostly paved with about a mile or so of decent trail.

I was entertained by a chatty couple in Leiderhosen who kept playing leapfrog with me. They were doing a run/walk, so they would be ahead of me when they were running. I’d pass when they stopped to walk. They’d pass me when they ran again. Around mile 16, I left them behind. Then they passed me in the last 1/10th mile before the finish. The nerve! :)

The later it got, the more bikers were out on the course zipping around WAY too fast for that many runners, with many NOT calling out ahead of time and just passing right or left at their whim. In turn, the runners would bunch up across the whole path and refuse to get over even when a biker WAS politely slowing and calling out that he was passing. So the rudeness went both ways – of course. Grrr. I don’t see why people can’t just let common courtesy rule on both sides. Sigh. But anyway…

So. It was an effort, but not intolerable. I ran until mile 18 and then went into a run/walk. Unfortunately, I forgot I hate walking. Plus, after you have run that hard, it’s HARD (as you probably know) to segue into a comfortable run/walk. Walking hurts, and it then hurts to start running again. So, I basically shuffled a lot and walked occasionally and ran when the legs felt like it (which was more than I thought they would). But I did try to keep the shuffle slow and do at least some walking just to lessen overall impact.

Post-race food. Good. Pretzels, cookies, fig newtons, cake, bananas at the immediate finish. Then a short ride to the German center where there was real food. Two coupons got you a drink (beer or soda) and a meal (or two drinks), with meals being choices like burger, bratwurst (?) sandwich, hotdog, veggie burger, etc. and fries. And there weren’t that many runners and they were spread out enough by finish time and the buses back, so there were no lines to speak of to get your food and find a picnic table in the shade.
