Joyce - it is so good to hear from you. Glad to see you & the cat made it safe & sound to Japan. I bet that was so cool running in Japan in your little VFFs. :) Hope you find housing soon.

Beck - I used to really hate my treadmill with a passion. But it is my best friend when I am training as I never have an excuse to miss a training run. Seems like you are recovering well. Please share your training plan when you get it. We will all be cheering you on as you train for that sub-4 hours marathon PR!

Runningdog - 7 days straight of running - you, go, girl!!

I ran 5x800 Yassos this morning with a warm up & cool down for a total of 6 miles. Yall know I really hate speed work. I was happy when I got the last Yasso done. But I am very happy that I need them all at pretty much the same pace!

On day 5 of "clean eating" - doing well so far!

I feel like I'm getting back on track after nursing a sore back for a couple of weeks. I ran on the Great Lakes Relay this past weekend. Today will be my 7th day in a row running. I'm trying to get consistent. Yesterday, I signed up for the Detroit Free Press Half in October. This will be a good intermediate goal. I set my goal time for that at 2:05. Houston is a little less than 6 months away.

Another 2 miles last night, this time outside. I despise the treadmill with the red-hot intensity of the heat of a thousand suns, so it was good to be outside! I am still doing short runs to recover from Saturday night... but last night's felt great!

Looking forward to starting training for Savannah on August 1st, but a little intimidated. I am shooting to finally break 4 hours in Savannah, and my coach is going to give me my training plan Monday. Yeah, I'm skeered. LOL

I'm overwhelmed at all the new posts since I last checked in, which feels like a LONG time ago. But it's only been about a week, heehee. DH, the cat & I are in Japan, though we've yet to find housing. So we're still (kind of) living like gypsies until that is sorted out. Ran 15 minutes today in my Vibrams, w/good turnover. In other words, it was pretty zippy.

Hope to sneak in a few miles tomorrow. Happy running everyone! emoticon

I did all my glute work this morning, and then ran short intervalls much faster than normally on the treadmill and walked in between. Did 3 miles like that. It felt good and my coughing fit came only after I left the gym. Went to see the doctor and got some sudafed (not OTC). Now it feels better already. Happy runnings!

Hey Becki! It was great reading your blog. I was a tad jealous about all the spark fun people you were hanging out with! :)

Maureen - I do love an iced cold beer too... I need to banish that thought - lol - otherwise I will be drinking one after work.

Sharon - why drunk, stupid people have to bother us runners????

I ran 4 miles this morning. Dang I was dripping wet - there was no breeze to speak of & the humidity was so high. Tomorrow I will run my Yassos on the treadmill.

Well in retrospect, today I should have run a "recovery run" after yesterday's ST workout. He worked me so hard and it was great. But today, I should have taken it easy. I only ran 5.5 miles but I think I went out too fast and had little in me to support it. I felt lightheaded and really thought I could pass out (from the heat), but did I stop? Anyway, I made it. :) Emergen-C didn't help today!

Maureen, you seem to be a lightning magnet! Way to plan ahead!

Loreen, I love a good recovery beer! I'm on the no alcohol bandwagon for the next month - I am doing a "total body cleanse" (which involves some supplements) and no hooch!

6 miles and strength training for me today. I got heckled by some drunken tourists which really put a damper on things.... boo!

I did 2 miles on the treadmill last night, slow and easy... a post-marathon recovery run!
My Make It By Midnight marathon blog is posted if anyone is interested! It was such a great race.. but it always is!

Today, I am still undecided about whether I will run or not. I am going do definitely do some upper body strength training and ab work... just not sure if I will throw another slow couple of miles in there too.

Marathon training (intense training to beat a time goal) for RnR Savannah starts on August 1st, so I am taking it as easy as possible until then.

We have been cold and rainy today, but that's okay with me because it is my rest day! If it's still rainy tomorrow (and weatherman says it will be LOL) I will just do my 3 or 4 miles on the mill at the gym, then I would have absolutely NO excuse for not stopping in to the weight room and getting some ST done as well!

Gogo - great job on the hike and not getting hit by lightning!

Ruci - Emergen-C as an energy drink; sounds like it should work - probably lots of instant carbs to get your motor running and anti-oxidants to zap those free-radicals before the get very far! Hope you zap that cold quickly!

Healthy - I have my training plan set up on RunningAhead.com and it is set as one of my home pages so my calendar is in my face as soon as I log in to the internet. Hope you get that new PR you are looking for!

Tammy - Awesome job on 3 days clean! It's the alcohol that kills me - love me a Corona (AKA Recovery Beer) after a good hard run on a hot day!!!

Ail - Hope you feel better soon!

Sharon - Friday's rest day did wonders for me - you should try it sometime hahaha!

Awesome job, everyone!

I went on a 4 mile hike today at 11,500 ft elevation, and it was pretty faced paced toward the end b/c we were above the timberline, and lo and behold, more lightning.

I swear I am plagued by lightning. Supposed to do an easy 30 minute recovery run this evening, but the storm gods are saying "forget about it, sister."

On the brite side, I planned for this, and I lifted weights this morning and swam 2000m before work and the hike. Tomorrow, teaching deep water aerobics again, attending shallow water aerobics as I'm the sub for that next week, and then swimming 3000 m after work. WOOT!

Happy Monday, everyone!

I took an Emergen-C before I went out this morning and had such a great run! Don't know if there was a direct correlation, but something clicked. Could be that it was slightly cooler this morning or a little less humid (at this point, I can't tell the difference). All I know was that I had 4.5 miles of sweaty bliss!!! :)

ST later this afternoon with the trainer. I am definitely getting stronger!

Tammy-I jumped back on the Clean Eating train yesterday. I got all of my food ya-yas out (chocolate chip cookies) and am drawing a firm line. I want to drop some weight and more importantly to be healthy. I don't know how i got back to eating poorly, but i'm back on it now. Glad to have a buddy to eat along with. I also started to make a real appointment with myself to workout, every day.

I'm hoping to get stronger and train aggressively to PR a half this fall and then possibly train for another marathon in the spring, we'll see.

Today is a rest day & I am happy to take one! :) It is also day 3 of clean eating - so far it is going well. I haven't had a drop of alcohol or a chip in 3 days - LOL. Got all my fruits & veggies with me at work so I have plenty of good stuff to eat.

Sharon - It's good to see you back to running. I do hope the legs feel better soon. It really is hitting me that I will be running a marathon then the Goofy 5 weeks later... I am trying not to have a panic attack!!

Maureen - glad the shins did not give you trouble yesterday. boo on the lightening!

I do plan on swimming after work for some cross training. I'm sure the pool will feel like a nice warm bathtub when I get home! LOL

Oh, you all have great runs, steaming or not!! I have been sick since last week, my sinuses are floating down my throat and making me cough forever!! I ran 8 miles on Wednesday last week on Embarcardero and walked this morning 4 miles with my husband, that's all.... It's miserable when you feel like this - I hate it. I hope to get back into moving more and coughing less this week... Happy Monday!

Maureen, glad you are back to running. Although getting caught in lightning is no fun!

9 for me this AM followed by core and glutes at the gym...I am still having a hard time w/ my running... mentall, I am raring to go, but the old bod just does not want to cooperate. I am hoping it's just the extreme heat and humidity....

Ran 5 miles instead of the scheduled 8 - had to stick thumb out at mile 5 due to lightning...but until then, I felt good, and I think shins feel fine. Still going to be very moderate this week and do lots of swimming and hiking and not bring running up to full distances this week. Don't want to overdo it. My left hip is bugging me, so going to do some extra hip exercises/stretches this week, too.

Felt good to run again, though!

Since when do I run on Sunday???
Scott will be out of town all week and wanted to try for a sub 24 minute 5 km (since he may not get all his other runs in), so I decided to try for a sub 30 minute one myself. I was feeling a bit guilty for cutting my run short yesterday so it was all good! I managed to do it in 30:31 YAY ME!!! The last KM is kind of rolling hilly so had to do some walking but still pleased with my average pace of 6:06/km (9:49/mi).
I'll get it next time!!!

Cheers, Loreen

Tammy - not sure what leg pipes are, but it sounds bad! But still, 9 miles is great, so good job.

I'm supposed to get out for 8 miles, but we are having an electrical storm, so I'm waiting for it to let up so I can go.

In the meantime, I'm packing my new REI backpack that I got on sale yesterday for an afternoon hike I'm doing tomorrow. I'm very excited to try it out. It comes with a hydration sleeve for my camelbak bladder, so that it excellent. It's just 30L - I wanted a 40 or 50L, but my torso is too short for the frames and they all hit me in the coccyx, so this will have to do. I think I can get my day gear in it, and if I decide I want to do a backpacking trip again, then I will need a bigger pack. :)

I'm going to so some ST & yoga in my living room since the forecast does not look good for a run!

The 14 miler did not happen but I did manage to run 9 miles. My legs were just like lead pipes today. Just one of those runs. I will rest tomorrow & resume my running on Tuesday.

Eating went well yesterday & so far all is going well today. It is almost like going through detox since my diet was not that great at my brother's house. It may be one of the reasons I feel so sluggish right now.

Loreen - yea for a great run today! Nothing is better than having a good run after several crappy ones. :)

Gogo - I have my fingers crossed for you!

Sharon - nice run!

Tammy - I usually need a vacation to recover from my vacation! Welcome back!!!

I had a pretty good run, considering how awful the last three were! I miscalculated, though...I was supposed to do 8 miles, but for some stupid reason I stopped at 12 km instead of 13 km. We have been changing our routes a bit to incorporate the same hills we will get on the half marathon in August (so nice to be able to actually run the course before hand for a change!!). Anyway, hope you all have a great weekend!

Welcome back, Tammy!

Great runs, everyone!

I'm still not healed completely from my shin splints, but I'm hoping that on Sunday (8 mile run scheduled) that I feel ok to give it a try. Don't want to overdo it or jump back in the saddle too fast, you know?

I'm doing tons of hiking on all of my running days, so I'm staying in good shape. Hiking doesn't affect my shins at all. It's running on pavement. Ugh. No good trails to run here, though - everything is so steep, and my sneaks aren't trail shoes anyway, so I'd probably end up twisting my ankle or something.

Just trying to stay positive, swim every week day, weight train and hike! Can't wait til I can run again, though!

Welcome back, Tammy! So glad to hear you had a good time w/ your brother!

As for the eating... well, my vacation was just what I needed to get back on track. I had really let the eating get sloppy after the marathon in January, but after my vacation, I WANTED to cut out the treats and alcohol. So, hopefully your vacation will be just what you need!

12 miles for me this AM! Felt pretty good - I am still not back to 100%, which is disappointing, but I'm getting there.

Hey guys! Back from my family vacation! Had a great time & got to run with my big brother. :)

Now that vacation time is over it is time to get serious about my nutrition. Running is going great but I haven't lost the weight I want to lose. Why do I have to love to eat so much?? LOL

I will be catching up on all the posts & all the great runs I missed while I was gone. It is good to be back.

Tonight's 5 km was so much better than the last two days! Mostly because I made sure to take it really slow! Don't get me wrong, it was still a pretty tough one and I am sooo looking forward to my rest day tomorrow!

John - thanks for introducing me to RA - that site is great! Do you know what the difference is between exporting as tcx and gpx files? I tried gpx today and for some reason it showed my run as 4.97 km instead of 5.04? Which do you use?

I hijacked my DH's laptop, so I'm able to stop in for a brief visit! Thanks for the wishes - we will need them, especially our ornery tiger. emoticon

My mileage has gone waaaay down this week. I've only covered 10 miles since Sunday, and will remain there until next Monday. Speedwork on Tuesday and my treadmill session yesterday were big "fails," but today's run was OK. I think I'm too distracted at this point!!!

Happy running to everyone here. Get some mileage in for me. ;-)

Ruci, I have no idea how Runningahead calculates VO2Max. I just download the run form my Garmin, add the shoes I wore so I keeps track of miles and hit save. Can't say I really pay attention to the VO2max calculation.

Maureen, sounds like a great hike. Hope you are back to running soon.

RutgersGirl, sounds like a great run this morning. Glad you are feeling back in the groove.

Loreen, rest sounds best!

Interesting run this morning. Started out what felt like was slow as molasses but was actually the tempo pace I was shooting for. After a couple of miles things changed and I eased into the run and everything felt more comfortable. Ran 8 miles at 9:10 AP, including 2 bridges and a long hill. Total vertical elevation gain of 545 ft.

Next run is a cut back long, slow 10 miler with the group on Saturday.

9 for me today! Took a while to warm up, but I was really cranking the pace in the 2nd half. I'm finally starting to feel almost back to normal. Then I did core and glute work at the gym.

Did a 7 hour hike today. Lots of fun! Still can't run b/c of shin splints, but hiking is not aggravating them at all if I go slowly. Feeling great, but hoping that I am running again soon!

I don't know what's wrong with me this week! Had 10 km on the schedule and I had to do some walking and cut it short - only 8.2 km in 1:00:18. The first 2 km were all right at 6:27/km then I slowed right down to 7:11 in the next 3 km. Had to take a walk break to work out a stitch in my belly at 5 km and catch my breath then just ran/walked the rest of the way. It was 24C so the heat was probably part of it, but I think maybe I still haven't recovered from building the retaining wall on Sunday. Tomorrow's 5 km is going to be super slow then I get to rest on Friday!!!

Rest for me today. Unplanned, but needed after 8 days in a row of working out to atone for my vacation! Also have had a ridiculously stiff neck for the past 2 days... boo!

I've decided that running in this weather is like running through Seran Wrap.

4.5 hot, humid miles. Ran with my running partner, who I haven't run with for a long time. I lost her around mile 3. Just too hot for her at 8am. Going to work with the trainer this afternoon. He's giving me a "buy one, get one free" deal on the DL. Can't pass that up!

Maureen- Have to agree with Sharon on the foam roller. Couldn't run without it!

Ail- 63 and overcast sounds heavenly!!!

JoPa- Your Running Ahead is super cool. Gotta check that out later. How do you know your VO2 max? That looks so fun!

Loreen- That sounds like a great XT day!

I got dropped from this thread! I was wondering what everyone was up to!

Maureen, google "foam roller" or "the grid" - I love my foam roller and would be lost without it! It's like a massage and PT all in one!

Joyce, good luck with the move!

JoPa - GREAT use of run/walk! Glad you had a good long run.

8 for me yesterday and 6 today.... it's hot and humid here! Impacting my recovery from the marathon....

I ACHE!
Yesterday was supposed to be Xtraining but Scott & I built a retaining wall across the front of our property - 65 feet worth, 3 courses high! It was 6 pallets of brick and a lot of shovelling and hauling bricks one at a time to where we needed them to be. We started at about 10am and didn't finish until 8pm and it was HOT! I guess I got my dose of Vitamin D because I missed a few spots with the sunscreen - mostly the backs of my shoulders, arms and behind my knees.
I think it qualifies as strength training though emoticon
Today is a rest day emoticon
Have a great day!

Joyce, good luck and safe travels! Tammy - have a great vacation and good time with your family! Ruci, it's so nice to see you back, you got me tired again by mentioning that freeway!! It was pretty tough during R&R. Sharon, you had a great hot and humid run again, you southern people - I don't know how you do it! Maureen, good job on your hike, Sharon was talking about a foam roller, which is this round thick long "foam stick" that I for example use to roll out my IT band before and after run... also good for glutes, hamstrings and pretty much everything in your body. You lay on top of it and roll...
I am in SF and did not have time to run this morning - so once they cancelled our staff meeting at 3, I went for a short 4 mile run. I'm happy!! It's about 63 degrees and overcast. Perfect running weather and Embarcadero is as beautiful as ever!

Hey All!

Checking in briefly! Ran about 5.5 mi this morning at the lake. Hot. Humid. Miserable. But so glad I did it once it's over.

Joyce, have a safe trip. I'm sure this is a stressful time!

Had a fantastic 13.2 mile trail run yesterday morning! Between the heat and humidity here in NC, I have not been able to get myself past my previously-furthest distance of 13.1 (and I only did that in the two half marathons I did a few months ago). Picked a REALLY rugged trail run for yesterday's run, just to mix it up a bit, and did a total of 13.2 It was MUCH slower than my normal pace, but with the elevation changes and fancy footwork, it was either that or twist something crucial! It felt fantastic, and I probably could have done a few more miles on top of that! It was so different to run on that kind of trail, and I think the slower pace left me with a little extra at the end.
Mind you, I am a little sore today, but it's a really gooooood sore!

Don't think, just do

Hey guys! I'm packing my computer later today, so this may be the last post from me until I get set up again overseas (or hijack my DH's laptop). I foresee lots more packing and making sure the movers don't mess anything up today... My stress levels are starting to inch upward, lol.

Gogo - My shins are actually still feeling the pinch from Saturday's race! Weird, because it never happens. Ah well.

JoPa - Nice running & biking. :-)

Ruci - So nice to see you back here! The wildest thing about the mud pit is that I could actually hear the sucking sound as it grabbed hold of my shoe during the race.

I still have shin splints, so yesterday I did a 16.5 mile hike (elevation ranged from 7500 to 9200). Averaged 20 mins mile. It was supposed to be a 16 mile run, but this was my substitute. Hope it was ok to do. Shins feel fine today, but other leg muscles are awake and angry, so to speak....

Tam, good job on the run!

Joyce, the race sounds fun except for death of Forerunner....boo! Hope it was just battery death and not the whole thing! I have the 405CX and it goes wonky from time to time when it gets rained on or when it's too hot....

Sharon, what's a foam roller?

Loreen, I bet the antioxidant thing has to do with the study about runners being more likely to get cancer b/c we're bouncing around and unlodging lots of free-radicals in our system.

Suezette, good job getting hout there and doing it in the humidity, even though you dislike it.

Ruci, nice work this weekend!

John, you are an animal! I'm just blown away by your endurance and speed.

Did my 16 mile long run yesterday. Averaged 10:08 AP using run/walk. First 5 miles were terrible, last 5 were great. Think the last mile was sub 9 minutes.

Felt good enough to ride 25.5 miles today, Tomorrow is supposed to be a rest day, then I begin a cut back week.

Joyce- What a fun run! The mud sounds like it would have been a tad frustrating tho. Hope your upgrade is a go! Lucky girl!

Tammy- enjoy your trip!

Suezette- I am so with you. I am over hot, humid runs! It wears on you psychologically as well as physically.

Sharon- Great run and a great day leading up to it.

I ran 6 hot and humid miles this morning followed up with an hour and a half of yoga after. Sat for 4 hours in 103* shade after that for the swim meet. Scary part is that I think I am acclimating to this insanity!
