Just read the word "shingles' several posts back! My sympathy to anyone who is dealing with shingles. I had them several years back, and I could hardly believe how painful they were. The night I was first aware of them, I thought I had an underwire from a bra stabbing me, but then realized I didn't have an underwire in what I was wearing. As they progressed, I was sure I had breast cancer or something! I remember sitting in a rocking chair in the middle of the day, alone, and crying because they hurt so bad. BUT - they were textbook perfect, they kept spreading in a line until they reached the center of my back, but then stopped spreading, and when the projected time duration (according to the books) was over, I was on the mend. It took about six months for the scars from them to disappear, but they did. I've never had a recurrence, and hope I never do. // My daughter had them as well - when she was only in her 20's, very unusual - hers were on top of her head - she was like me in that she thought she had a brain tumor or something, because of the headaches she had with hers. Knowing of our experiences, I have a completely different perception of what nerve pain is all about. Hope everyone is nearing their end of the ailment, and feeling better!!!!!

As for me today, just dealing with another recurring "struggle".... nothing physical.

Still playing my adjustment game with the new scale. As I read the number each morning, I subtract four! I need to get honest with myself, and accept it's reading as being the "real" number!! emoticon

I had that happen to me too kmf. emoticon --the new doctor's scale!

Struggling with shingles pain today. At least I now know why my glucose numbers are high!

Off to get a medical massage. It hopefully will help. emoticon

As to thai food, I had wonderful chicken satay and a low carb Yum salad with very fresh and tender seafood!

The gauzy skirts - weren't they called "gypsy skirts"?? If you can't figure out something to do with them (which I think you will!), send the creative Christine!! I used to love sewing, but have lost that interest, think it has to do with eyesight more than anything - I have to get a little magnifying glass out every time I need to thread the machine's needle. And then I'm okay. I should try doing more, maybe this winter (but probably not!) emoticon

( I readjusted my ticker on my Spark page, so my original weight was four pounds higher - and believe me, that was a number never in my life wanted to see!! Truthfulness can be so painful sometimes!! But always good...

Becca - I love Thai food! What did you find? Yes...there is one of the skirts I might try to re-do the elastic. It's not gauze, but light cotton plaid with appliqued giraffes etc at the base. A Pier One offering that I wore over 30 years ago and loved. My waist was smaller then (even though I weighed more -- how does that work?)

Kathy -- you do not weigh 4 pounds more! When I first read your post I thought you had gained...lol. I know it's the psychological aspect of looking at a higher number, though.

No struggles today except for having to drive my van. Ever since DH got his new electric car in Feb I've been driving it pretty exclusively. Usually it works out because one of us is usually home when the other is gone -- or we're together in the same car. I wanted to go to class and he had a meeting so...it was the van for me. It's good, it should be driven every now and then. The little electric car has a gear you can use that whenever you lift your foot from the accelerator, it slows. It literally is almost one pedal driving when you get used to it. Just about the only time I use the brake anymore is when I'm stopped at a stop sign and I want the car behind me to see the brake lights. Brake lights do come on when foot is lifted from accelerator but don't stay on when at a complete stop unless foot is on brake. Also I've gotten used to the quick acceleration with the electric car. So it was interesting today driving my old trusty van again. Having to put my foot on the brake to slow down, not getting up to speed as fast when pulling out on the highway, and not having the back-up camera when trying to back up on the crowded parking lot. Also the van is a LOT bigger! We can get spoiled so quickly can't we? It's good for me to drive the van every now and then just so I don't forget how.

Okay, so here is what I'm struggling with today: I bought a new digital scale yesterday emoticon , replacing a regular old scale with the big dial emoticon ((big, but not big enough for my eyes to distinguish which lines the pointer was at. So now I can read the numbers easily and I can get the reading broken down into 'tenths". Which I like a lot! But here's my problem. The digital scale is registering ~ 4 pounds higher than the older scales' readings. I have no idea which one is correct, but I'm going to go with the one that I can read. Of course I realize that for months I was being spared the sight of higher numbers, but it was still a bubble-bursting experience. It makes me feel like I have to lose those four pounds all over again.

Well, at least u got some exercise. emoticon I wouldn't want to clean a pool in the heat, not that I could.

I searched and found a great thai place and had a delicious lower carb meal!

Gauzy skirts will come back. U could replace the elastic if u really love the skirt. :)

Becca -- hope all is well with your blood glucose! edited because we posted at the same time -- hope it gets better soon!

Kathy and Christine - emoticon

Today I am up in the fabric closet in "the room" struggling with letting things go. There was a time back when I was taking my mom on her town rounds years ago that a local charity that sold clothing would have a bag sale. For $3 you could stuff as much as you could get into a trash bag. And that's a lot. I ended up with a lot of those fancy flat shell buttons and some wonderful fabric that I thought I'd use in crafts. Now I'm going through it and seeing what I can re-donate (buttons not off yet, etc) and what needs to be tossed and what I'll actually use. I don't throw things away lightly. And Christine -- among the items are several elasticized waist gauzy long flowing skirts with lots of crinkly bright patterned fabric - remember when those were popular? I'm just thinking there has to be something I can do with those. I'd donate them, but the elastic around the waist has given up the ghost - when you pull, it stays pulled ... lol. I've got about 5 of them in a stack - and who knows? maybe I should do a pinterest search.

You said it, Kathy! Not much struggling today here except for the usual inertia. We had a thunderstorm last night that blew over the giant plant on the back porch - which fell into some smaller ones. DH and I got that cleaned up, then have tried to anchor it to the rail. We'll see. DH wanted to go for the "drastic" multiple lashings of branches to rails, and I opted for a less visible approach.

First of all I am just glad you are alright and I am sure the doctor feels the same and is glad for you :-)

Mr. Cluckers was my MIL's and the crazy bird next to it from my mom. I like wire artwork so there is probably too much of it around. (Me and my clutter, hahaha)

It took me at least two hours to get my kitchen on the clean side again. I made some sweet bread today, Apple chunks in batter bread. Oh my gosh I had it for breakfast and lunch! emoticon This time of year I give myself some slack, I caught myself thinking "How about some eyebrows today???!!!" I wouldn't say self care has been high lately, but everyday I try to make the effort. So I got dressed and cleaned that dang kitchen up all the way to the floor. Hahaha, no not the cabinets or the window though.

Anyway so I sure can relate to your downstairs Kathy! Wow! I have the same problem because the house is situated towards the north, so not the brightest LR around. I do have a small lamp that I use but not so far this winter. Maybe you can talk to your doctor about SAD and then your DH would believe you?

It is general knowledge that I am being treated for SAD so DH knows not to push me or I will take his head off... Hahahahaha! I am 1/2 pure Greek, 1/4 Italian, and the other 1/4 English is the only part of me that will tolerate these winters, haha How about some scones? Anyway I hope you got to do some things upstairs today, is that where your new special just for you room is? I wish I was there to help you break it in.

Okay enough about me! Haha what is everyone else up to?

Christine - what kind of cake will you bake? You've really been baking a LOT! I've got to try that whole wheat bread you posted the link and picture to. I like to remind DH about the LED lights because he literally went around the whole house taking working bulbs out and replacing them. He took a big box of the old ones that were still working and old ones we had in the closet that still hadn't been used yet to sell at the estate sale at my Mom's.

Kathy - I laughed when reading about your DH following you around turning out lights. Funny how we start noticing these things more when they're retired and around underfoot ALL the time!

I cancelled the appointment. I am impressed with how the dr and her assistant got back to me during this, and were willing to have me in to reassure me. Thinking back, I wish I'd never contacted the dr in the first place, but if I hadn't -- and it had gotten worse rather than better -- then I'd have that much more time to wait to get an actual appointment. Now I'm hoping nothing else comes up or I might be like the little boy who cried "wolf!" "oh it's just that hypochondriac lady again.!"

Wow, I'm a whole two years younger!! Measuring by any other means than years, I'm pretty sure that I am "older"!!! A belated Happy Birthday to you Paula! And when is your b-day, Christine?

I was looking at the light therapy lamps earlier, with thoughts of getting one. So what are your thoughts on one of them, vs. using the LED lights (which I love!!)? The "daylight" ones are nice and bright... I like your phrase "seeking my joy" - I have noticed for several years now that I am "down" so much more in the winter months. And also, my vision is so much better with brighter light. My upstairs is very light in year-round, but because we have a wrap-around porch, our two main rooms downstairs (kitchen and living room) get very little direct sunlight, and get pretty dreary , especially on the "sunless" days. . My husband is also one who follows me around turning off the lights, even if I leave for just a few moments. It can be quite annoying, worsening an already gloomy seasonal existence. I suppose he always did this, but I've only noticed it with his retirement. When I try to explain that I literally need light, I think he sees that as a sign of weakness, or looking for an excuse, not as being real. Oh well, I just follow after him then and turn the lights back on!! emoticon (Or stay out of the rooms when he is sitting in unless I need to be in them! And use that time doing my own thing upstairs!) It adds up to a lot of trips up and down the steps in a day' time - great exercise I suppose!!

I'll count the light things as my struggle, it's a cloudy day today... and the lights are off downstairs!

Wow Paula I am a vintage 66 yo too this year! I need to make myself a cake, I saw a bundt cake on Pinterest I would LOVE to try, but... what will I do with the leftovers. Chocolate of course. Hope you are back on track again, I figure once a year is okay to get off track! Hahaha!

Well, go with whatever your doctor tells you to do, and keep us posted BUT it is probably nothing to worry about.

Kathy, I have been allowing myself to putter around and I am not pressuring myself to finish "chores" and I seem to be having better success with that plan. I get SAD so bad this time of year that I have to try "seeking my joy" almost daily. And stressing myself out about things not getting done perfectly seems to really help me in the winter. I also found my baton and was that ever fun to see if I could keep it up without dropping. I surprised myself with how well I did, haha!

Oh, my DH got his mission done today. He took a shower with his new shower chair. He has been so weak that he really needs it right now.

Paula I have those LED lights too, just not enough of them yet, I need to get to Home Depot and get the rest! Good idea to point that out!!! emoticon he he he

My birthday was Friday - #66!

My appt is supposedly Thursday. I say supposedly because my symptoms seem to have gone. I left it up to the Dr. as to whether she thought I should still come in and am waiting to hear.

Today was struggling to get back on track after out-of-control eating this weekend. I am so spoiled being on my own most of the time as far as eating goes. I prepare all the food, but many times DH and I eat entirely different meals at different times. I have total control over what I eat. With company in the house it's so much harder to stick to a plan and even though I could control what I eat, I'm more tempted to overdo it and not follow my exercise plan. I'm very much a person of routine, and I get into trouble when it is disrupted.

Oh man, oh man, oh man!! ...that would be yours, P., and yours, C., and mine!!! As they always say, you can't live with them and you can't live without them! -- I think we all understand each other!!! emoticon Commitment is a very important part of the love package, isn't it? emoticon emoticon Christine, I do hope your DH's illness is soon over and that there's nothing more going on.

I think I missed someone's birthday! When was it Paula?? Hope it was a special one for you!! Do you have a day for your appt? How are you feeling this week?? Any change?

I am struggling getting motivated, even with the sun shining today. Stress just knocks the wind out of me sometimes, and just seems that there is always something causing it...!! And some of it is self-induced.... but that is my struggle today: just feeling stressed and unmotivated! .

LOL - I think our DHs must be related. I'm always getting lectured about leaving lights on, and having them turned off behind me -- like when I'm heading back to the room with an armful of clothes to fold -- and then I have to stop and turn the light right back on. He's all the time leaving his own lights on - I feel like saying "mind your own beeswax" Oh, yeah, edited because DH has installed all these super-efficient LED lightbulbs everywhere that use hardly any juice - so if they do get left on it's not taking as much electricity. I take pleasure in pointing this out to him. emoticon emoticon emoticon

the birthday meal was nice - I went ahead and made chili and DS brought a bunch of fresh greens for salad. The owner of Tito's has a farm near the distillery and this is where the produce was from. It was really fresh and choice. There was napa cabbage and a huge bag of spring mix greens and some fresh radishes too.

I had a really hard day yesterday, and today is not much better. My DH has been so sick the house is like a tomb. Anyway, I am thinking that I need to figure out a way to go visit my sister pretty soon. Or something!!!

Kathy - Great idea to fix up your son's bedroom for your own purposes! Neat that he bought the house next to you, too!

Christine - I love the chairs! I like the wooden arms -- comfortable as well as not getting worn and dirty.

You girls have been busy since I last checked in!

Christine, what is an "ascent" style chair? I love your projects, especially when you share pictures with us!! (hint, hint) WHEN you get the chairs emoticon show them to us. (...you can fix that wood on them! With your amazing skills, you can fix anthing. )

My only struggle for today is adjusting my calendar for the week. I had it all planned out, but received some invitations (for which I'm grateful and happy about) , that totally destroyed my well-thought-out plans for this week. Oh well, that is the UPside of being a stay-at-home wife - I do have flexibility. So I guess my struggle is in setting priorities and then accepting the sacrifices needing to be made in other areas. Not so bad for a struggle, is it?
