My daughter (3) wanted to be a horse, so I dress my son (17 months) up as a cowboy / farmer. I kept our costumes simple this year. I found my daughter's horse costume for $8 and just used overalls, plaid shirt, etc for my son. I did buy him a cowboy hat, vest and badge set from the Dollar store. I think I spent under $12 on two Halloween costumes this year! :) That's my plan from here on out. Halloween costumes are getting crazy!

My daughter chose her own costume this year. We didn't even give our opinion. Last year we suggested a fish because she was (still is) SO into fish and sea life. :) The first year we just did a basic cheap pumpkin costume.

My son was only 7 months last year so we dressed him in an octopus costume to match my daughter's fish. This year we did the cowboy to match her horse. Next year he may want to choose his own...we'll see. I just love when they match / go together! :)

To answer someone's question about the age to let them start to pick out their own: When my son was 2, we picked out 3 things that we liked and then let him pick from those. The years after that, we let him completely pick what he wanted.

He was Mario from Super Mario.

My baby girl is either going to be an elephant, a dragon, or a pirate, I think, and my older girl is going to be a princess (she's asked specifically about being Rapunzel) or a pirate or Supergirl.

A couple days later, we're going to Texas Renaissance Festival, where they will have choices of what to wear again: princesses or pirates. They are all costumes we already have, so I'm not rushing to make them decide.

Zoie will be a pumpkin! I can't wait.

TMNT would be a cool group theme, although they might have favorites and fight over who gets whom.

Cute! Good idea. We haven't decided for my boys yet. I have triplet boys that will be 2 in November. We don't want them to be the same thing but we don't want them to fight over their costumes either so we were thinking of a theme of characters that go together. At what age do you think the kids take an interest in picking out their own costumes?
