we got my dog from a "horders" house who had 3 dogs, 4 cats and 4 kittens in a townhouse with 2 kids. when we got my dog his name was King...I didn't like it. It was too plain and didn't suit him at all. so my son named him goku ( a character from dragon ball z) we tried for a day but he wouldn't answer to it and my hubby startednot to like it. so we spent an afternoon renaming him. We ended up with Lucan. Lucan was the name that we were going to name our next kid if it was a boy. But we decided we weren't having anymore babies so we gave the name to the dog and he loves it. the bad thing is now we have larry my hubby, Landon and Linkin my sons and Lucan the dog! thankfully I am nyx and my cats bella :P my cat got her name from my son who did name her after the twilight character (he is only 4 but loves twilight :P) we also call Lucan, Luke and Luca.

So Karma bites them in the behind!

We named a sheep Ceasar. Hubby wasn't paying attention to me when I was talking about the Dog Whisperer. He thought I was naming the second sheep. So we went with it, except the little sheep reminded me more of Ceasar Augustus. He tried so hard to be the lead sheep, but he was little, so Freckles just ignored him and did as he pleased. Freckles is more like Cesar Milan. Calm and assertive.

Good Subject, so here it goes, Lol's.

Romeo because he was such a little lover.
Snootie from a friend who called her that and it stuck.
Ozzy was changed from Os when he came to live with us.
Chappy came with that name.
Caesar not sure why my partner named him that.
Chester from the Bruce Willis movie, The Kid.
Domino because of being black and white spotted.
Angel after a Shaggy song.
Elliot is going to be the guard dog so he was named after the tough guy from the series Leverage.
And now going to pick up a Rottweiler who is to be named, Nikita, also from a tv series, lol's.

Yes, it is a lot of dogs. Most are over the age of 10 and some were rescues. The number will be going down probably within the next two years, naturally.

I would like to name our next guard dog, Karma. So criminals will know that Karma always gets you in the end, lol's.

LOL and don't forget Xanax and Klonopin.

Buddy was named Brutus at the pound, He was such a sweet dog, Brutus had to go. However, bear in mind that he is Jack Russell and Shepherd, so a very smart and head strong 30 pound dog. It is all I can do to stay ahead of him.

Border collies are so smart and so active, glad she found a knowledgeable owner.

Harley came with her name.

Briggs (Brigadier) also came with his name, but the story behind it was that his pregnant mom was rescued from a mill in MO and before she made it to WI, she had her litter (in IL). Mom and all five of the pups had Parvo; Briggs was the only survivor and so the rescue wanted to name him something that meant fighter/survivor. We call him Briggs, Mr. B and B and he answers to it all.

Echo took us almost four weeks to name. We finally settled on Echo (after the nymph), because she would follow me around EVERYWHERE. After she was named, I read the book "Shaping Success" by Susan Garrett in which the reader follows her trials and triumphs of her dog, Buzz. Later in the book she talks about how dogs often live up to their names and Buzz was a wild one, so in turn she named her next dog DeCaff. Not to prove Susan wrong, Echo does have the most shrill and annoying bark that she does when she is excited or in front of an agility course!

Should I ever challenge myself with another Border Collie, I believe I will be naming it one of the following: Valium, Ritalin, Paxil or Lorazepam! emoticon

Cute and easy names for the dogs.

I had a dog named Scotty when I was doing daycare. Every time I asked one of the kids if they needed to go potty, he would come running.

Rocco and Reno don't really differentiate their names. Reno ignores me and Rocco comes to both names.

I have two dogs. The first one is Pepper. That was her name when we got her and felt it was cute and fit her so we kept it. Jack came a few years laters. We got him from a shelter and his name was Keagan. That didn't fit him at all. It took awhile to come up with his name but after watching him for a few weeks we realized he's somewhat hard headed, a little bit of a bully, extremely smart and loveable, but also stubborn as a mule. So his actual name is Jacka$%, but we just call him Jack for short. Most people think we have a thing for Pepperjack cheese, which we like, but we definately did not name our dogs after cheese. emoticon

My Sis had a dog named Zero. I have no idea why the nieces named him that.

Reno was named after Reno, Nevada. The kids enjoyed going there. Rocco is an Italian name and he has a diamond on his back. I wonder if SIL was going after a gambling theme.

I think that is why I have the dogs. His luck changed. Just pray and hope that he has his apartment today. I need a break.

I have 3 dogs. One is named Nox because she is black and that is the Latin word for darkness. One is named Webster and I named him after Emmanuel Lewis' character on the 80's tv show. He is a white dog, but was so tiny when I got him that I thought it fit perfectly. And the last is Zero, who is named after the dog on Nightmare Before Christmas. My ex named her.

Fido is a name I think should make a comeback. It means "faithful," as does the name Fidel.

I had a dream a few years back that I had a Rottweiler named Fidel. But don't worry--I'd get him Castro'd!

Freckles and Ceasar are the sheep. We got them as lambs. Freckles had/has lots of freckles, but I was talking about Cesar Milan when Hubby thought I had named the other lamb Cesar. I decided since he was such a dictator that I would spell it Ceasar.

If I had waited a few months for their personalties to emerge more, I would have named them Burt and Ernie. I think that describes them perfectly.

They would like to be dogs and join us in the house.

GRAMMACATHY-what an awesome topic! I've read all the entries up to this one and enjoyed them all. It's neat to hear how many people have rescued dogs, too.

My basset, Bulah, came with her name from the rescue.

Peaches, my blue tick hound, was named by my husband, sight unseen. I was describing how she looked at the shelter and he said, "She sounds like a peach". (Round and with short fur and sweet.)

I'll add a picture.

Luke just looked like a Luke to us.. we also call him Boogers ( as a puppy, he rubbed his wet nose all over your arm whrn he was giving you lovings)
Reggie acme with the name - and he seemed too old to cahnge it. I often call him Reginald.
Buddy was named by my hubby - which surprised me since he wants to name everything else "fred". he looks like a buddy though.
Arrianna was named by my daughter - she like long unusual names. We usually call her Arri, or "Arri-squarehead"
Remmington was named by my son, who likes to hunt - thus "remmington" i call him Remmy or Remmikins.

Buddy named himself too, very much like Smegger. He pretty much ignored everything but: "Hey Little Buddy".

We also had a chow/akita mix. Talk about being pack leader. I was third in the pecking order. Loved him though. He lived to age 17.

Nightro is a very cute dog too. I can see where the name would fit all that lab puppy energy.

Mirabelle is our oldest chow mix. Kestrel is our middle daughter. Lili is our baby of the pack although she has taken over as the alpha after our beloved Smegger (aka Toad Killer) passed away.

Smegger was named after a word on Red Dwarf (tv show). She was so independent and would not come to her name we picked for her. One day on a walk she was being stubborn as usual and I called her a 'smeg-head' to which she turned, looked at me and sat! From that day forward she was Smegger!

Mirabelle has been shortened to Bellie most of the time. She was named after a character in a video game. The character was demure, sweet and innocent like Bellie was. After Smegger passed she was very lost and confused for quite some time and started having violent outbursts. She never knew life without Smegger there to guide her. We hired a behaviorist to help us with her and now she is back to her old gentle and secure self again.

Kestrel is type of bird so we thought it was a perfect name for our middle daughter. When we first rescued her she had never been in a house before so she was terrified. She wouldn't walk on the floors. She would leap from couch to couch, furniture to furniture. it was like she was flying so we named her after a type of hawk!

Lili is a shortened version of another video game character Nelilia Agramon. Nelilia was an interesting character that was neither a good or bad character. The character just always did whatever was best for herself. Lili is the best girl and the worst girl all wrapped into one. She is so smart she often gets herself into trouble from being bored, haha, so we kid around that she is a mix of good and bad!

Brett was "Brownie" at the SPCA -- we had a chocolate lab. that we called "Chip" and a beautiful sable collie named "Hershey". The latter was because he sat on a package of chocolate chips on the way home from the kennel (he had lived most of his life in a cage). So, we decided that Brett didn't need to be a food name!

Dogs share our lives more completely than does any other animal. Since their domestication, dogs have accompanied and served us in many ways. Two apex predators managed to find mutual benefit in a close relationship that is considered "commensal" -- dogs developed an intense, familial bond with humans.

We tack on all sorts of endings to Al's name. The most common one is Alnoying. We call him Albo most of the time and then add things on to that like Albotuna. I don't know why we have to add on, I guess Al is too short.

Sasha was three and came with her name and we liked it.

Buddy was 8 months and named Brutus which is a horrible name for such a loving guy. Hubby kept trying out names on him. "Hey little buddy, do you want to be called Homer? Hey little buddy, do you want to eat?" Within two days we had not come up with a name for him and he was coming to Hubby every time he said "Hey Little Buddy". So Buddy named himself and we shortened it to Buddy, Buds, Bud, Budderbutt, Budders, Budmeister, Budinsky, etc...

One is named "Odysseus Leonidas" (I named him that cause I like the two Mythological characters ),we call him "Ody" for short , so everyone thinks we named him after Garfield's buddy Odie.
The other is named "Mojo Balthaazar".My brother orinally named him Bad Mojo and I tacked on the "Balthaazar" cause I like the name . He's too old to change it now so we continue to call him Mojo.I lub my fur kids !

I previously had a Beagle Shepherd mutt named Pepper. He was almost 17 when I had him put down, and the house was to empty without a dog, so I headed to the local shelter. Breed did not matter, sex did not matter. Names were even chosen-Rocky for a boy or Zoe for a girl. I saw her, the 7 month old black lab mutt, so excited to have attention paid to her that her tail did not just way, her whole body wagged. she kept jumping on the cage door, and everytime she wend down her front paws landed in her water bucket. She immediately jumped up again, water everywhere. She is now 9 and her name is Splash.

Goldi--she got her name from her previous owner. I got her when she was 5 or so, and my ex didnt want to change her name. She also answers to Baby Girl.

Now, my baby took a while to name. I got her when she was just 6 weeks old, and so itty bitty. When she was about a 3 months old, I finaly found the right name for her: Nibbler. She liked to nibble on everything she could, from me to the dirt in the back yard. Now, she should be called Garbage disposal. Her other name, and I mean this with TONS of love for her, is Sh*t-head. And yes, she answers to it too. She also goes by Nibs, Nibby, and Hey, you.

StormyLu was named after my aunt's dog "Stormy". She looked so much like him. I had to add the LU to her name because everyone thought she was a boy (If you see my avatar pic that's her). We also call her wiggles (part aussie) and fuzzy butt. (you'd have to see it to believe it, it's just soooo fuzzy).

Shadowman was named shadow because, well he's a black dog and he followed StormyLu around everywhere when I first got him. He actually looks like her shadow. I tried to come up with an original name for him but nothing fit. His nickname is numb nuts, because, well, he's nuts! This dog is absolutely crazy and I love it!

DGC name our pets. All our pets have the name of a creature in the book they are reading at the time. DGD was reading a book about a super hero that was a dog. Our dog is Super Mutt, called Mutt.

Jack's full name is Captain Jack named after Captain Jack Sparrow and he was named by my nephew. Jack was given to me after my brother died, 4 months after my sister died, and my nephew, my sister's son, named him and it was perfect for him. He is a Jack and at times a captain and always a sultan.... One of his many nicknames!

Great thread, it is so interesting to see how people gave their dogs their names. Some of the are the same names that but arrived at differently.

We got our first dog in 1987, Abby. We named her after a dog I knew in my childhood. Then we decided that we would name our dogs alphabetically.

We had a stray for a week when Abby was 10. We named him bandit because he looked like he had a patch over one eye. We ended up not keeping him since Abby wouldn't eat anything for the week we had him.

We adopted Callie as a puppy from the Humane Society and it was September 30, 2001. We didn't like any girl "B" names so we decided that even though we only had Bandit for a week, we would move onto the "C"s. Since it was shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, we decided to name her Calamity and call her Callie for short.

Al was nearly 2 when we got him from my niece. She adopted him when he was 1.5 years old and they had already given him the name of Al. He too was from the Humane Society but because he was older, they gave him a name.

Our kids have told us they will continue the alphabetical tradition and pick up the alphabet where we leave off. It may take a few generations to get through the alphabet. Especially if we go backwards again like we have with Al. Our next dog we have decided on Daisy or Duke depending on the gender.

Jeanne I come from Victoria, Australia.

Cathy we have had so much rain here we have filled 2 x 5000 gal and 2 x 3000 gal water tanks.

The grass is growing in some places but in others it burnt so hot it killed the seed bed. I think I'll have to re-seed some places. Things are going along bit by bit, so much to do and sometimes I feel so old and tired to do it!!!

Thanks for the thoughts.

Peace and long life - Jules

You know as I was checking out the dogs on your pages, it occurred to me that we ought to post our dog pictures onto the team photo section. I think only two of us have done that.

Rita,
Buddy and Sasha are our Doogie and Sara replacements. We had Doogie and Sara for 17 years. After Doogie died I felt dogless and lonely so started walking the shelter dogs. That is when Buddy found me. It feels right to have a set of dogs running our lives again. Doogie was named by my stepdaughter after Doogie Hauser M.D. I never felt it fit him, but it did soften his more dominant edges.

Flowerdale,
How has the fire recovery been going? Now that you are going into spring, have the grasses returned yet? We are so wet here, that you have to look closely to see where our fire was. Also our neighbors who had the most burn damage logged this summer, so now we have a naked hillside. It seems so open. It is a little disconcerting.

Ok Cathy, you asked for it!! This might be too long!
Well, here goes, enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Lucy was in a shelter, so we called her Lucy as a
name of ancestry! J's paternal grandma, bc I have always said since my 2~legged kids would have had
"our' ancestral names, so should my K~9 kids!
Rose came in honor of Amanda Rose, (see below.)

Fancy we rescued, from going to a shelter; her name,
(given by little kids, while she was about 2 mos. old, and tiny!) FUZZY!!!!!!!! Now, she's 75 lbs when we got her! So, Jeff was playing around with names her third night with us, and said something about the "fancy little fuzzy ball", and for some reason she reacted to the word fancy! So, there it was:Fancy Jayne, (in honor of Dakota Jayne, again, see below.)

Now, Amanda was already named whenever I rescued her from going to a shelter, but, I wanted something that was from me for her.
My BFF is middle~named: ROSEANNE; thus: ROSE!
That was my sweetheart for 13 1/2 years!!!!
While we still had her, we went to the 4th JULY
Liberating Pets, in Lawton, OK. We brought home another adoptee, named: DAKOTA, we added JAYNE,
after my Aunt, only spelled like MANSFIELD, bc I do not like the way things are done by everybody else!!!
LOL!!!!!!! When we lost both of them, I told Jeff I wanted our future K~9 kids to be middle~named after those two, in their honor, as the first two we owned together. Although, I had Amanda for about 6 1/2 yrs.
alone b~4 we "adopted" Daddy~Jeff! LOL!!!!!!!!
Anyway, they are still in my heart and I still miss them both, even though I love these two more than life itself! My heaven will have all of my K~9 kids with me!!!!

Much Love,

Many Blessings,

Rita51Ann

This has been interesting. Your name descriptions have prompted me to go back and check your photos so I can match names with the beautiful fur babies.

I need to get ready for Church, but am looking forward to returning to this thread.

Bruno came with his name and after the first couple of times it just rolled off the tongue.

Ladybird, who came from the RSPCA got her name because she is white with black and brown spots all over her.

Maggs, who adopted us, had Maggie as her name, so to change it to a new name for a new house we just shortened it to Maggs and never had a problem with her coming to it.

Sarge...Was short for Sargent Haley.
Alice...My Daughter named her, have no idea how she came up with that name hehe
Henley is Irish...Means dweller of the high fields. I live in the high desert, so thought that was close enough.
Munchie. Now this is a story. My Daughter worked at Petco a year ago. There was a groomer that groomed Munchie, then named Buddy. The people that owned him came to see the groomer one day, and said they were moving, and wanted to know if she would buy Buddy from them. She agreed, because she adored him. Buddy loved to munch on people's hands. Not hard, just a play thing. So the groomer thought Munchie was a better name for him, and we agreed. (I happen to be there that day) The next morning my Daughter got a call from the groomer, asking if she would like to buy Munchie, because her mother was so allergic, that her eyes were all swollen. My Daughter had a history with Munchie, and liked him, so she said yes. The funny thing is, since my Daughter worked full time, Munchie got attached to me. I told her this dog has been in 3 homes, and this is the last one. He stays!!

Our Brett was called "Brownie" by the SPCA, but that seemed rather plain. So we tried out names with the "Br..." and he responded to Brett. Rowdy was just a puppy in a pet shop without a name and he had many names before we settled on Rowdy -- his name should have been "Yappy Doodle" because he still barks louder and more frequently than he should!

Dogs share our lives more completely than does any other animal. Since their domestication, dogs have accompanied and served us in many ways. Two apex predators managed to find mutual benefit in a close relationship that is considered "commensal" -- dogs developed an intense, familial bond with humans.

Oh my, I hate to be so boring, but Belle was named Belle when we got her at the Humane Shelter and we just stuck with it.
Besides, Belle means "beautiful" in French, and she certainly is to me!

So I searched the topics and did not find this one. I always find it interesting in how or why people and/or their pets end up with the names they have.

How did your dogs get their names?

Sasha: Came from Humane society and her name seemed to fit. We call her "Sweet Sasha Sue".

Buddy: Also came from HS but was named Brutus and we thought it was horrible. Buddy was too sweet to be a Brute. Hubby kept trying out names on him. He would say" "Hey Little Buddy do you want to be called........." Pretty soon Buddy was responding to "Hey Little Buddy". When I realized what was happening, I laughingly pointed it out to Hubby and the name stuck. We call him "Buddy Bad Boy, Budderball, Budderbutt, The Budmeister etc."
