Hi All! We have survived the cold temps and all the snow. Looks like we're going to be in the 70's by the end of this next week. Woo hoo!

Marlene, our son-in-law has chemo every 2 weeks also (colon canser). This was his week and he had to go have the pump removed on Wed. morning. DH drove him and dtr to the hospital in the big snow and uncleared roads while I stayed with the grandgirls. The canser center was closed so they had to go to hospital to have it removed. Have I told ya'll that I HATE CANSER! Yes, I misspell it on purpose to give it no more status in my life than it deserves. My 26 yo dd goes back on Feb. 24th for her next MRI, it will be 4 years this May since she was diagnosed with ogliodendroglioma (brain canser). She had 2 surgeries, radiation, and oral chemo for a year. Pray for continued clear results!

WINTER POEM

It's winter in Oklahoma
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At five degrees below.

Oh, how I love Oklahoma
When the snow's up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes,
The weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Oklahoma
Cuz I'm frozen to the ground!

DH's chemo has been canceled the last two weeks. It has been a month since he has a treatment. Going to try again for next week. He takes it every two weeks but we are hoping the Dr. will say he can stop for now but I doubt if he does. DH feels so much better but that will change if he has to start the treatments again.

Wow, this weather is unbelievable! It's -24 here in Ponca City this morning. The heater has not shut off since I got up and I know it is set on the nighttime setting still. Emmett has not made one move to go outside this morning.

I have been cooking way too much. Today, we must eat leftovers or the fridge is going to overflow. Have a good day all and stay warm!

Work is canceled for me yet again, here in Tulsa. When we first started hearing about bad weather coming, the mantra was "We never close." I was told by people that have been there 5 years that they closed maybe 1 day in that entire time. Now we've been closed 4 1/4 days in one month.

You can call me Cats, CDP, or Misti.

Hello everyone. I signed on to Sparkpeople last July but have been really ill until recently. I need to lose about 50 pounds and want to look and feel better. With fibromyalgia, it's a challenge, but I have great incentive - a 13 year old.

Hope everyone is ready for the storm. Stay safe!

Hello fellow Okies. Just stopping by to say hi. I'm new to Spark People ... well, actually I set it up back in May - and am trying my darndest to keep up with it. I tend to fall off the ladder easily.

I exercise alot - actually teach aerobic classes but I eat too dang much and then get frustrated with keeping up with the count. Yet I really need to make that a priority! Do any of you have any advice for that? I do not have an iPhone or Blackberry so I have to do it from my home computer and find it's work.

Anyway, wanted to say Hello ... hope you are all staying warm!

p.s. I need to set up one of those cute tickers like you all have. :-)

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS FROM SPARKPEOPLE

Sometimes you look at a person and see a cynical snake. Someone else sees a joyful lover. You're both right!- Rumi, poet

Tending two shops

People can be hard to deal with. Are your co-workers constantly annoying you? Does your neighbor rake his leaves into your yard every fall? Is your child high-maintenance and needy? Often we let our frustrations and anger towards people and situations prevent us from seeing the larger picture. Try looking at the circumstance from the other person's point of view. Your overbearing co-worker might just be trying to emulate you by asking a million questions. Perhaps your neighbor doesn't really know where his property line ends and where yours begins. Your child may need more individual time with you, instead of competing with siblings. No person's personality can be summed up entirely by one negative trait or action. So next time someone cuts you off in traffic or swipes the idyllic apple you were eyeing at the store, remember that everyone is less-than-perfect sometimes. Know your role in people's lives and continue to be positive and mature. After all, we all do thin gs that are worthy of a good tongue lashing sometimes!

Hi all! I'm in Checotah, and I'm wondering how everyone is doing during this weather. Thankfully, I don't have to travel at all for work (my shop is on our property), but the couple of times we've ventured out it's been really bad.

Being cooped up all I seem to think about is my next morsel of food. But I'm keeping on track for the most part. Exercise is tough getting motivated about.

Welcome to the Okie Team, Misti!

I feel empowered again. Finally was able to get out to walk. We had to drive a couple of blocks to get to the downtown sidewalks that have been cleared. Emmett (our boxer son) was so happy to get to go for a stroll. It was sunny and in the 40's. Felt great!

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.- Italian proverb

Reinforcing Healthy Competition

Competition is a natural part of life. We are faced with competition for jobs, a mate, and even the best parking spot at the store. Approaching these situations with grace is an important way to model good relationship skills--especially to our children. Often people get angry during competition, but try to be mindful of how this frustration is unleashed. No one wants to be on the receiving end of either a sore loser's lack of composure or a boastful winner's lack of grace. Don't gloat to your friend that your daughter can run faster or read at a higher level than her child. Remember, after the basketball game concludes she is still your friend and you don't want a moment of hot-headedness to interfere with what really matters--your relationship. Modesty can go a long way!

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children. - Kenyan proverb (We know that all things are a gift from God)

Stewardship of the Earth

Reduce, reuse, and recycle sounds great, but do we really think about (and apply) earth management into our daily lives? You might not litter, but how often do you drive your own vehicle rather than carpooling? What about buying "green" products instead of commercial items made with harmful chemicals? It is easy to disregard the dangers to the environment because there are no immediate consequences to our lives. However, think about how the earth will be in 50 years if everyone lived as you are today. Set a good example to your children of stewardship for the earth by recycling, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, and generally appreciating nature. Instead of going to Disney World, go on a camping trip. Turn off the TV and pick some flowers. This world is not ours alone. It is communally shared with all of the generations before us, and all of those to come after us.

Yes, I've seen some coverage of the wreck on the Tulsa news. I used to live by Spring River and know that bridge very well. It was always slick and dangerous during snow and ice. So terrible!

I hope all the Oklahoma Sparkers are staying warm and safe in this winter weather we are having. Today the clinic I work at opened at noon, we have no doctor in the clinic but there are a few of us here. The roads are still treacherous and highly dangerous, did anyone see the coverage about the wreck on the Will Rogers Turnpike, that is about 30 miles from where I live. Be safe everyone.

Hi All! I just made the faux potato salad from SparkRecipes using cauliflauer in place of potatoes. It is quite good. I used sweet gherkins in place of the dill pickles as that is what I had on hand. Also added some green onion and turmeric, salt, and pepper. It didn't need as much mayo or mustard as called for.

Dee, I'm still walking and watching what I eat. Trying to add extra veggies and fruit to my diet. Today, we walked Emmett (the boxer) downtown and mailed his dog obedience class registration. Finally got ahold of his vet so I could get her portion filled out. I went to a free yoga class today (it's National Yoga Day and the local studio offered a free class). I enjoyed it and am considering signing up for the Restorative classes. I like that I can pay for 4 classes a month and go to any class. That would give me more freedom on the classes I can go to.

Head Country BBQ had a rib slab special today so that will be dinner, along with the faux potato salad. Tomorrow I plan to try the vegetable lasagna recipe that doesn't use lasagna noodles. I am a little wary of it...we shall see.

Nature gave us one tongue and two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak.- Epictetus, philosopher

What nature teaches us about silence

Too often we speak before we think and do not listen nearly as much as would benefit us. Today, examine situations where you might learn something by listening instead of talking. Some people can be challenging to relate to--a nosy mother-in-law, overbearing boss or co-worker, or simply your child wanting your attention. Instead of justifying your feelings or explaining your point of view, use effective yet concise words and then wait for a reply. Good leaders are always marked by being good listeners. When a friend needs to talk, resist the urge to give advice right away and just listen. We have an obligation to tame our tongues and give people the courtesy of being an attentive and engaged listener. Wouldn't you want the same respect? Everyone deserves to be heard. Give that thoughtfulness to someone this week.

Hello, my name is Gretchen and I am new to SP and to the area. Looking forward to making this the year I get back to my pre-pregancy weight! Of course, my oldest is almost 12...years. I guess I really can't blame it on him anymore, huh?! :) Looking to loose about 20 pounds or 2 dress sizes!

Patience is the key to paradise.- Turkish proverb

Poise in the face of frustration

Whether waiting to see a change on the scale, dealing with your coworkers, or diligently putting in work and feeling unappreciated, losing your patience is very easy to do. By exercising patience with all people, you are allowing them to become better and to learn on their own through gentle guidance. One healthy byproduct of self control in the face of frustration is that it usually leads to encouragement and enhancement of your relationships. Happy families and friendships thrive on patience and learning. It may take time to learn, but the results are well worth it!

Know your limits...but never stop trying to exceed them.- Anonymous

Overcoming your personal "stop signs"

Many of us use our "limitations" as a stop sign for reaching our goals. While knowing our limits can safeguard us against injury and embarrassment, too often we use them as avoidance methods in our lives. What is holding you back from reaching your goals? How can you push beyond your comfort zone in a healthy way? Many dieters experience such limitations in on their weight loss journeys. Our bodies and minds are capable of overcoming much more than we could ever imagine if we just try. Today set new goals that may push you a little. Overcoming your personal hang-ups and fears may be one of the most rewarding choices you'll ever make!

I wish, Sam! I'm just looking forward to the 50's for the weekend. Hope that's still in the works, anyway.

Hi to all the new members! Please come visit with us and best wishes on your weight loss journeys.

Fiber is so important to our bodies and weight loss. Over the years, I've become adept at reading food labels and looking for high fiber, lower calorie counts, as well as the fat and sugar content. It's amazing the difference sometimes!

ok, i'm back. =) i took a little time to slump off, and now i gained a couple lbs back, sooooo guess that means it's time to get back on the weigh-in wagon.

i'm tracking my fiber this week. i've never done it before, but turns out i'm not getting NEARLY enough. so i've been eating way more fruits, veggies, and other fiber rich foods instead of processed stuff. We'll see how the weigh in this week goes. I'm hoping the fiber counting will help. =)

Goals:
1. Start training for a 10K
2. Maintain my weight at 130 or lower

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

To fulfill a dream, to be allowed to sweat over lonely labor, and to be given a chance to create, are the meat and potatoes of life. The money is the gravy- Bette Davis, actress

The greater price of financial security

Money makes us do crazy things we never thought we would do. A great example of this is staying at a job you dislike or working outside the home when your heart is at home with your family. While money does provide opportunities and liberation from certain stresses in life, unhappiness has a greater price. Let money enrich an already abundant life, not define or run it. Can you reprioritize your life in a way that you are achieving both financial goals and also fulfilling your dreams? Live the kind of life that excites you to get out of bed in the morning, one of color and joy. If money comes, great. If not, rest assured, knowing that your life is not defined by what you make but what you already have. The best things in life are free!

I think you're right about the reply thing...

Boxers are great dogs! They have a really good temperament, especially around children. You need to watch out for him though. Now that PitBulls are getting banned the new "in" dog for jerks who want people to think they're bad is the Boxer. Remember when it was German Shepherds and Dobermans?

My poodle also rides with me on my motorcycle ;) She has a little pouch I wear in front that she rides in. She even has doggles! (goggles for dogs) I'm trying to find her a leather jacket too! She already has a Harley shirt & hat. Yup, I'm crazy! lol

Annie, I bet your little poodle looks adorable riding in the bike basket! I never dreamt I'd like a boxer but he is proving to be a great companion. He's very laid back in the house and is doing well on walks. We are working on commands. We actually found his previous owner and have learned a lot more about him.

I don't think there is a way to reply to a specific message. I clicked on Reply on your post and it still shows up above yours. I guess that keeps them from getting buried in the thread.

Enjoy today, folks and get those walks in. Gonna be chilly the next few days here in OK. Brrrr

And still trying to learn the difference (if there is one) on how to reply to a particular message versus replying to the entire thing. Oh well.

I love boxers! My husband and I had two. He got custody when we split up! lol He went from being mad when I brought them home (they were both rescues) to wanting to keep them when we split up. Oh well, I have a toy poodle now. I'm trying to ride my bicycle more so I got a basket for the handlebars and she rides in that when we go. She can keep up with me walking but not on the bike!

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

If the world seems cold to you, kindle fire to warm it.- Lucy Larcom, hymnist

Lighting fires in the cold

It is very easy to complain about the state of the world and point fingers, especially when you're having a bad day. What is not so easy--and yet desperately needed at times--is for people to step up and make a difference. Don't be intimidated by others, wallow in your own negative feelings, or sit back and assume someone will do it when you are capable yourself! Relating to others around you isn't always easy, but lending a helping hand, extending a hand in friendship, or expressing a word of encouragement can make a big difference to someone. The fate of many has been changed by the actions of just one person who has grown tired of "how it's always been done" and instead turns and does something more positive. The world does not demand of you to give your entire life, but we can all be instruments of positive change. What can you do to make this world better?
