The east coast is so expensive!
I just booked a flight to rhode Island for my nephews graduation in May.
3 nights at a fairfield inn next to the airport and airfare totals :$1,356. OUCH!
and that is just for me. I will be traveling by myself.
and staying at the same hotel as my family.
So that is good. I guess I need to get him a graduation gift,
money I presume. How much is the going rate??

Bizi I am glad your doc is working with you and giving the change in meds a chance. Please make sure you let her know if you start to have any problems. I am super glad your TSH is coming down. Hopefully, you are feeling better. Drink lots of water and eat those healthy foods I know you love.

discontinue lithium, start tegretol 200mg twice a day. lab draw in 10 days see her again in 4 weeks.
I am happy to be getting off lithium..I am hoping that the tegretol dose does not need to be changed after the lab draw.

I looked on good rx and the new med is expensive compared to lithiums $4.
I will have to go to walmart to get the cheaper amount. It is $30 more expensive at my pharmacy. $75. ouch!
I hate going to walmart.

my tsh came down to 5 and the t3 t4 are both normal so no changes for now. retest in 6 weeks.

This is what I wrote to my psych doctor:

Dr. Orazio,

After much thought, I decided that I don't want to wait until my thyroid is done for or for my kidneys to have damage either.
As you mentioned during our last visit., I would like to try tegretol as my mood stabilizer and discontinue the lithium.
If after giving the tegretol a fair shake and it doesn't work out then we can always go back to the lithium as a last resort.

Bizi- hope you can get all the meds worked out. Sounds like your body needs a break from the booze to help it stabilize!

I saw my GP today. liked her.
She wants to retest the TSH in a couple of weeks. I am hoping that I can quit drinking by then to see if that is what affected my thyroid.
I really don't want to be taking the thyroxine...one hour before eating or drinking....that would not be easy on me.
I am looking into tegretol, that is what she suggested the lamictal stopped working and that is why we switched to lithium in the first place.
I have not been happy on the lithium....don't want to constantly worry about my kidneys. I had stopped all of the calcium supplements and now magnesium ones too. due to elevated blood calcium. which is now normal. my vitamin d is low 37, for some reason she wants me to double it and take 10,000 units a day. for 2 months then go back to 5,000/day.

wonder why my d is low. I usually run 50-60??????
She is not happy with my total cholesterol 280 but that is because my hdl is 115. my ldl was higher too so she wants to recheck that is 6 months.
She did the kind of pap where you only have to have it done every 5 years so that is good. It hurts when she did it. ouch!
later this evening I sent a message via the on line portal Thanking her for our visit and her answering my concerns. and then I asked if she would prescribe klonipin .5mg because I was having a hard time sleeping.
will see what she has to say.

I asked my gp in the protal if I could have .5mg of klonipin because I was having a hard time sleeping.

recheck TSH, t3t4, think about changing to tegretol for my mood stabilizer.
I restaarted my diet today and that means not drinking. regained most of what I lost in 3 weeks of over endulging. sigh

Hi!

Hope you all are doing good.
I've been going thru insomnia bad, I'm up all night. Getting a sleep test next week. Gonna see psych on Wed.
I've taken thyroid meds for a long time, even with the psych meds. Nothing to worry about. However, the longer I'm AF, the healthier my body has gotten! However I need to lose weight and build some muscle, but I'm out of kilter right now. Planning on joining a gym, I'm not good at working out at home.

I just need to get motivated....

I'm so glad I don't plan on drinking for occasions anymore. That would set me back. I'm happy to be Af for life. Alcohol will trip you up everytime and play games with your head. Not going there again!

Jami- very good advice- I do wish Docs would point out that lithium can affect thyroid.

Bizi-if you are more stable on it then yes- I agree with Jami! And you just may need to augment with synthroid. It seems to be a standard thing. Lithium's effect on thyroid does seem dependent on genes too as well as possibly iodine intake.

An alarm went off in the school-church building next door- I was planning on sleeping in emoticon but it is quiet now except for the wind and rain. I had dropped off my sister's cat and now she not doing so well. She is 21 and my sister and our second cousin and my other sister all feel it is her time... I may pick her up- this cat was fading away when I went camping one time. Yes 21 is old for a cat but some live longer. She was in fine health when I dropped her off.

The good news is my sis is probably able to come home - finally! Had a nice talk with her on the phone. She told me she can't "go under" - she means be sedated for any procedure. I told her they will most likely use localized anesthesia- although I know if they had to sue anesthesia they can monitor the level

I did not stick to dry January- but have not gone off the rails either-as you said Bizi- got pounds to lose and booze does not fit in..or off the booze with pounds to lose! lol

6 open houses today!- hope we find one

I wonder if the level can go back if I stop taking the lithium?
I see my gp on monday and she will have the t3t4 and full thyroid panel lab results that my psych doctor had me get done last week. so she will have more information.

Bizi I would follow what you and your doctor decide. They have to get a handle on your TSH. That is really high. You and I should be around 1.5 for our TSH. What is your free T4? That gives a specific idea as to how much thyroid hormone you have. I understand the impact lithium may have on your levels, however, that alone should dictate of you require Synthroid. Hopefully I didn't confuse things for you. Folks with hypothyroidism require replacement in some form or they will literally die. Your body requires thyroid hormone for hundreds of cellular functions/regulation.

My tsh was elevated 8 from the lithium....6 months on it.
I feel that I am more stable on the lithium.
She told me it was my decision to stay on it or get off of it. Taking synthroid is an easy answer.

For my birthday Jeff treated me to a dinner. He hired a chef to come to our house and prepare us a dinner.
We had filet Mignon roasted potatoes, creamed spinach. the appetizer was a crab and avocado salad. desert was a berry compote tart with whipped cream. the meal was delicious!
It was very filling and delicious!Jeff like his filet as well.

talked to the nurse today, cholesterol was high but so was my hdl so the ratio is good. my TSH was high over 8 wants to retest. it has been high before when I drink a lot. And I had the test taken right after we got back from vacationing A LOT!
I see her on monday.

Monday had my blood drawn and today missed a call from my MD office presumably about the results???? Tried to call back but did not get thru. I wonder why they are calling me because I meet with her on next monday for a wellness exam/pap. hmmmmm.
I see my psych doctor on thursday morning. Wonder how much weight I will have lost over all....minus the gain over the past 2 weeks. I think I weighed 185 yesterday. I think I was 194, my highest weight. But I had gotten down to 179....will have to go look at my history.
I had a beer tonight, none yesterday. I think I will have a gin and tonic.

I spent the entire weekend eating and then drinking and being on line. I did not do any of the work for my business. I did some this evening so feel better about that......am not going to be on here for hours like usual....want to get a good nights sleep. last night I took 1mg of klonipin because I needed to sleep. I see my pdoc on thursday...my weight is up since the break....I think I did not gain all of the weight that I lost back. At least hope not.
I will be interested to see what I weigh.
I always weigh more at the doctors offices which is so depressing.
I had my blood drawn this morning, took her 3 sticks/tries. sigh
that hurts when they dig around trying to find the vein.
I have my annual wellness exam and PAP.
I will be curious about my calcium level....if it is high again I don't know what she will do/say. Some where I read that high levels of vit d3 can cause elevated blood serum calcium. so that will be next is my guess.
I stopped taking 1300of magnesium oxide and now take 400 mg of magnesium citrate and 25mg of sennocot. every other day for constipation. It is not perfect but better.

emoticon Helene- unprocessed is best. emoticon Some foods have more to offer than others as far as balance- drink too
as Booze has nothing to offer nutritionally speaking. The more I listen to those following science - the more proof I see. Goes for booze. And what are moderate amounts of meat?+ cheese- eggs. Findings are suggesting there are not healthy amounts but like booze if you can "moderate" it means very small amounts. Akin to that one drink a day.

On top of that- I know that it has been said our wheat is not our grandmother's wheat- well fish now have plastics and pesticides in them. Certainly not our Grandmother's fishThis complicates things for all of us.

Personally with the effect on the climate that meat eating and animal products - fish have I will opt out as much as I can - which can be pretty much every day- as you said Helene
- Understand I am not pushing this but just want to share what I am doing. Why.

I am deeply concerned with what is going on with climate. Of course politically - I am also feeling quite blue- it is a scary time. Anyway! Breathe- health is very important no matter what goes on!
one thing I learned with all going on with my sister is to take care of myself and not let the stress get to me- eat the healthy food and workout- that is not the EASY road for sure!! But ends up making things better

Jami-I worried about you- I don't want you to end up getting some complications. I don't blame keto folks at all! We are sold this way of eating so called fortified healthy cereal and skim milk
and so many fattening grains through the day-
no wonder they think they have found the way but it not a binary issue-

We all need to eat more veggies and yes fruit- fruit is tricky as so much if it is picked non ripe but if you can get good quality fruit..has anyone gone peach picking?? It is awesome!

Of course all the low carb diets have the benefit of no or very little booze which is a plus- can't deny that. I say just ditch the booze or moderate- 1 and done - if you can't then let it go! emoticon

Emily I think you are right. I really need some energy when I run. I just need to get some balance! Thank goodness I am no where near diabetes. The running is so good for me and I feel incredibly strong when I am running. I know that I have good heart and lungs or I would not be able to do this over and over. Keto is just not sustainable for me.

Jami emoticon Veggies and fruit are awesome. Filled with micronutrients that can't be replicated in pill form. Also fiber feeds our gut. Keto diet can be helpful for certain conditions such as epilepsy or a kind of time out for diabetics but is not healthy. I know that may not be a popular view but as time goes by science is backing that up.
It can create insulin resistance. And many other problems.
IF you want to limit or even eliminate grains - perhaps South Beach?

I'm reading Dr. Greger's book How Not to Diet and one thing in it is about keto and diabetics. So if you go on keto you are not reversing diabetes you are just eliminating the foods you are having trouble with. It has not been cured. If it were cured then that person could eat a peach.
To reverse it eat healthy unproccessed foods that heals the body.
It is possible.

Keto does not reverse it . It just puts you on Carb Free island. Shut off in what they claim is paradise- but no. No bananas for you! And do not think of ever eating a roasted beet covered with cherry infused balsamic vinegar. No sweet potatoes!

I have way too many thoughts on this - but bottom line you go into ketosis you lose water weight. Could be 5-+ more pounds. Scale makes you happy after that. Then you go on to eating so much fat you don't want to eat and you lose weight.

And then it stalls and I see so many excuses - oh that is fine just keep ketoing on or that BMI
/weight scale guidelines are wrong! I am big boned. (sure we all need to find our healthy weight- I am not talking about that )
But I have witnessed excuses to keep on eating in a way which will not produce best results.
It sounds like people trying to justify being addicted to bacon and butter.
So far I don't see the proof in the lard pudding

And you can't eat sweet potatoes. You limit peppers. You have to monitor things like broccolli. Broccolli?! And cherry tomatoes? It is a diet for grown ups who don't like their vegetables. Also of all things? Limiting onions. And you need to peel cucumbers and limit them. How do I know? I did it for 3 weeks. I wanted to know first hand.

And you have to go through the keto flu. I don't know of any healthy ways to eat where you have to go through anything but feeling good.

I went out for a bike ride during my keto experiment and thought I would not even make it home. I did keep going on the diet but thought how can it be healthy? Sure a body should not run on simple carbs like donuts for ex. But no steel cut oats???

If grains are a trigger food- I am talking even brown rice just measure it out or eliminate for a while.

People like to hear good news about their bad habits-

Donna emoticon on career goals!! And- still getting to gym.

I'm in for Dry January too (sort of- am having 1-2 on 1/1 and then am done)and shall take that month to think about a year off. For me it would be as an experiment/adventure. For 1/1- mimosa or bloody Mary- I just know me and that works best. Plus- I know I am not having any until and may actually not at wedding- so many more days in February. The wedding is not until 6 in the evening- I might have a coca cola! emoticon That would be a big treat for me. DH is officiating too and so I know he won't have more than 1-2 drinks.

I also need to focus on career. Part of this is finding the space. As I look for a house to buy I keep in mind I want studio and office space.

As well as had to think- what is I do best?? What do I want to spend time on? Master? Illustration- yes. Botanical? If medical?- as for that- my GF and I are taking a road trip in April to go to Mutter Museum!!! Can't wait! This is the link- muttermuseum.org/ Fascinating!!!
Also will be going to some other sights around there. They have a tour of hospital.
It would be a dream come true if I could see an an autopsy. I used to prep bodies after they died at nursing home -before being taken to funeral home-
but being able to see the anatomy would be very interesting!

DH is visiting his parents in Anguilla- I am opting out. Looking forward to some alone time - DS is at friends and coming back before flying out so having some time with him too.

Will take the time to purge fridge. Batch cook. Research again for whole food plant based eating.
Pool is open again soon- on the 6th.
I'd go with DH but I figure the ocean is here too- sure not sandy etc.. but I have been there before and will again and this just feels right.

My one big thing- my anchor habit is to draw every day even if it is just for 5 minutes.

My races will keep me going in the right direction. emoticon emoticon emoticon and possibly a emoticon again- possibly but for sure for the shorter ones.

Been reviewing my AF time, 448 days, In the begining, I found myself getting angry at a lot of things. I am much calmer and so is my hubby. We have such a good relationship now that we are AF.

Hello everyone! Took an SP break, but I'm back now and ready for a dry January, starting today! One more NYD party but I'll abstain. Weight is highest ever, sigh. Got on the scale this morning and about fell over with shock. Still working out with trainer, still getting to the gym too.

But the wine has become quite the habit, and that needs to stop.

In reflecting on 2019, I did many career-related things that required a lot of courage. I want to take things even farther this year, gathering up even more courage. For career, yes. But also mustering the courage and strength to break this wine habit/addiction.
