It seems like you are taking on too much at once or at least looking at all the things that still need to be done. that will certainly become depressing.

If you are tired, You could sit down and just list a few things to do tomorrow. Don't make this too overwhelming. Make it manageable for one day's work--or a half day's work. No one declares you have to work sun to sun on this.

One way I am fairly successful is to designate an area and just sort the stuff into places they will be moved to. I think flylady actually has collapsible mesh baskets which are pre-labeled! They are cute. Or another way is to keep 4 or 5 boxes which are pre-labeled.: Garage, Trash, Give Away, Upstairs, Basement...etc.

At least the stuff gets sorted--later it can be actually moved to those other places enmasse instead of running around madly with one or two items at a time.

Just suggestions. You need to find your most comfortable system. I poop out rather quickly so I definitely cannot go running around for very long.

Chris

Hello Debie!!!

So, so, so happy to find you up here!!!! The same thing is happening with my home, so I joined this team to get support and motivation to work on having a nice clean home. So good to share with you here, too.

There's nothing wrong with using the word "diet". It comes from the Greek word "diaita", meaning way of life. So to lose weight and keep it off we need to change our way of life.

Lou, I have been having someone come in every 2 weeks. I used to get very "down" because I couldn't keep up with things. and then it would be absolutely impossible to catch up. I feel much happier now. Good luck! Chris

A 2005 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that Brits burn more than 50,000 calories a year--nearly 15 pounds of fat--just by cleaning their homes. emoticon

you ask is my home depressing me--if i don't want to claim it as mine due to the clutter-yes. I know each baby step is a step forward but i think i need a giant one to be exact. My home alone was awful enough but to cram in two more did not help the matters any by no means. I need to choose the next item to work on. I started with bills/ checkbook/ schedules whatnot and i do have a better hold on it not sure i chose it first but i think it was a good one. Now what sounds good to do next is what i should think about. I do know that i will take a box or something and dig around to find all bill statements etc and keep what is only needed and trash the rest. That should help in some way i thin out some of if nothing else the paper clutter. I know magazines collection gathered

Good for you, Gryph!

I'm still working on my own abyss - the computer room. Got one side of the desk mostly dehoarded (when it is clean and organized, then it becomes 'my desk'.

A bit of progress is WAY better than NO PROGRESS, which is what I can claim. I've been ignoring my mess of clutter, and I would say it was depressing me except that I think my job situation is depressing me more.

Anyway, keep up the good work! emoticon

A bit of progress made - about 1/6 of the floor in the back room got cleared, and only about half that stuff went into the garage (for further decision). The rest either has a place, or got tossed. (Nothing that got tossed was worth donating.)

Still a wee bit depressing, though, given how long it took for so little visible progress. Will keep slogging along. Some progress is STILL some progress.

My house is back to depressing me again. Mind you, the rooms that got cleared are *still* cleared... but that was weeks ago, and nothing else has happened. I need to go out and chop down the rest of the vegetation at the back of my house (but the fruit trees and oaks are out, so I can't breathe well outside). I need to fix the wall on the house (some siding is trying to leave) - but that's outside, too. I need to put my car in the garage - but I still haven't gone through all the stuff we cleared out from the actual house. I need to go through the back room... but there's stuff in the garage.

Sigh. I know it will get better - it did before, right? - but right now, I'm kinda hiding from my house. Which is tricky, since it's where I live!

And in my other life, I knit. craftygryphon.blogspot.com

Did you ever get to a place where you used or could use a couple of days of maid service?

I have used a maid service.
First I got the house in reasonable condition (some of the counters were cleared, the part of the floor/rug I wanted clean was cleared although there were piles around the edges). I did warn them about the piles. They said they would clean around them. One company did carpets, baseboards, and vents too. I did shop around. The price varied by $50 per day covering thesome cleaning.
The company I ended up with did a great job. It took them two days.
Hope that helps.

Yes, my house depresses me. There is so much to be deep cleaned that I'm not physically able to do and tidying doesn't make the rest of the cleaning go away. Finally getting some remodeling done so thinking about investing in a couple of days of maid service. Has anyone used maids before? -- Lou

Not a good time for the challenge for me. Too much inconsistency around the holidays. I've been steadily working on the pile of old newspapers, Robin. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a pile, though.

Threw away more than 9 things today. Had my sis over deep-cleaning in the bathroom before Mom gets back from North Carolina. She was scrubbing the tub & shower area while I cleaned out the triple-wide medicine cabinet. Oldest expiration date was April 1991!

You are doing so well!

I spent 4 hours in the past 3 days getting rid of stuff in the computer room. You'd think I'd be finished by now, but I've got at least the same amount of time and work ahead of me. But, I must say, I am starting to see the light of day - woohoo!

Stack of newspapers out to the recycle bin, approx 20 days worth. I realized I was never going to read them, so get them out of the house where they won't bother me anymore.
Stack of mail is now beside the shredder, I'll work on that tonight.
I also put away a stack of books that were taking up floor space in the living room, but they are still in the house.

Correct - 9 things out of the home - trash it, give it away, sell it, but it has to be out of your home.

The thing's size doesn't matter. It is the positive act of releasing 9 things for 9 days in a row.

I like the idea of 9 things a day for 9 days. Maybe we could make a challenge of it? I was thinking about starting in on my living room again tonight right before I read this. I think I will give it a try.

Thank you, I loved the article. I am going to try the 3 points given. I think the short darker days of winter gets me down also. I am definitely going to try taking away 9 things a day for 9 days. Everything seems so overwhelming, but 9 items seems like something I can do. I will also try to do it with my paperwork. If nothing else, in 9 days I will have 81 less things around and 81 less papers. Sounds good!
