Laughed about the socks! I threw out "a perfectly good pair" of underpants yesterday! At work I am on my feet for 8 hours. My stupid underpants kept falling down so I was hitching up my pants every 15 minutes all day! I came home, took them off, looked at the brand, chucked them and pulled all the others of that brand and put them in the women's shelter box! They were basically brand new!!?

I got another 2 boxes of misc. kitchen items to go to the senior center! Sounds like they may close all of Montana's senior centers over the COVID -19 thing? I just decided I wasn't going to wait until they asked for rummage for the Spring sale. I'm no longer going to store that stuff at my place. It's much easier to take things a couple bags or boxes at a time than to store it in the garage and go through the hassle of hauling a whole load of it! I also took them a stack of magazines and a box of beautiful Hallmark individual cards appropriate for that she group - the ones to son, daughter, grandchildren, sister and brother and the various in-laws! The rest I boxed up for that nice sale they have at the boys and girls club. Those were to mom, dad, grandparents. Both places sell them in their little gift shop!

So that's 5 boxes! Still not "caught up' but with all the snow and all the cancellations of events I think I can find several more over the next few days!

Tossed, donated 30 items on Friday. Cleaned out a kitchen drawer. Got after the pantry today. But the goal was organization. My goal is to average 7 items a day. I'm not a crazy hoarder but we have stuff that can go. Only thing I got rid of today was a pair of socks I was wearing. They just didn't fit right. Bye-bye!

Same! Just can't get into it? Will have a lot of catching up to do when I finally get back to it! I'd rather pull up the covers and escape in a book. Depressed.

That's great! I still have not put together the shelving unit in the kitchen! Did drop off a bag of clothes at the Salvation Army on Saturday! Have another big bag about half full and a box of books ready to go to the car!

I am in. I will start by counting the one box that I emptied. It was a new five drawer shelving unit. I emptied a second box full of gifted teaching items into hat unit. So...I brought two boxes to the trash and built a unit and filled it with that I use for my online teaching.

I found interesting mail and notes stuffed in books I was boxing up for donation! And found a 20 dollar bill in one! Profitable decluttering! Gotta love it?

This was started several years ago as a Lenten Challenge so typically runs from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday! Since the math doesn't work you get Sundays off!

Instead of giving up sweets for Lent, give up clutter! Each day, work on filling bags or boxes (any size) with things you no longer need or want. You can throw them, donate them, sell the stuff or recycle.I

I had good luck decluttering with this a few years ago so am going to start again tomorrow!

40 bags in 40 days is a nationwide challenge centered around the 40 days of Lent and ends on Easter! It is more about decluttering things to donate! I've blogged about & done the challenge the last 3 years! If you scroll down you can see some of the memes that explain it!

So I did well this year but have so much more to do! I started a new thread called "a bag a day in May" for this month! That's where I'll be posting! Any size bag works! I put books in plastic milk crates & count that as "a bag".

Very flexible! Whole point is to declutter, however it works for YOU!

I did one bag today.

I almost saved one old shoe box because it was a nice, sturdy box and I thought I could use it to store something else. So I moved it to living room.

Then I went back and tore the lid off so it wasn't "perfect" anymore and I could throw it out.

My problem continues to be food I waste! Stuff I bought but let rot in the crisper drawer! Better than it was but I do use it as an excuse to eat out since wasting it is also expensive!

Have 3 bags of clothes& 4 boxes of household miscellaneous in the backseat for my trip to the "big city" tomorrow!

emoticon Glad you got rid of more stuff! I have not been keeping track of my spending but I have not done very much shopping. I just decided that the bringing one in if one went out was never going to work and I have avoided places I thought I might have a hard time resisting the urge to buy...mostly thrift stores and garage sales...which will start up again around here in a month or so.

I also have been doing much more cooking at home. Saves money and I know I am eating better but I do still like the lazybones daze when I pop in and pick up something. I do better when I am preparing meals for others but I have started using Sunday as a day to get soup stock simmering and veggies chopped so I have no excuses when I'm tired and hungry on Monday or Tuesday night!

I went through my clothes and donated 8 small bags of clothes to the church.
(Shoes included)
I am going to read that book you gave us a link, too.
I have been keeping track of all our spending for months and I do believe it is time to stop cutting back more.
I really have to cut out the dinning out.
I just love to stop with DH instead of "Making something" at home.
I like not having to worry about cooking something "Lazy bones" that I can be.
I am going to work on it though.

emoticon I have several areas I started & will also just keep chipping away at! I love Hawaiian shirts! Friday is always Hawaiian shirt day for me and has been for many, many years! My collection is huge! Found a website that sends a whole box of shirts plus sometimes other luau items to military units! Started by a soldier's mother! I love that! I am going to go through and find as many as I am ready to let go of and send them to the site! It makes me so happy! Thinking of having a luau party at the senior center& taking pictures of the seniors in those shirts & including those in the box! I have assorted sizes and some vintage! Will get a count this week (hopefully)! Just feels like a wonderful way to declutter & share!

I did get 40 Bags...and over half of it was stuff to donate or recycle! I'm going to keep working on the clutter. Have a new motivation to get rid of a ton of clothes I never wear and probably never will. "The time has come to say goodbye...." but I think I'll keep posting on the thread as I progress along!

"....I only read the first chapter but when she was talking about her clothes I realized there were so many more that I could let go of, that her reasoning was much more sound than mine...so I filled 3 more bags. Made a huge difference in that overstuffed closet."

I want to read that chapter!!!

I need to finish reading the book we read last year and map out a plan for next year... our "New Year" starts basically now, with Passover etc (Biblical Holy Days.). We are focused more on getting the leavening out of our lives, in a spiritual as well as physical sense. The unleavened bread is a physical symbolism of putting out the excesses of our lives, wrong attitudes etc. I'm oversimplifying it.. but I did take three big bags full to the GoodWill last week.

The backseat of the car is full! I had my BFF download the copy of the book I wanted to feature on the Hoarder team..."The Year of Less". I share an amazon library with her and her sister so don't even have a clue how the books download but I got an e-mail from Hay House that had it on special for $1.99 so sent her the request...and like the great pal that she is, she put it in our library. I only read the first chapter but when she was talking about her clothes I realized there were so many more that I could let go of, that her reasoning was much more sound than mine...so I filled 3 more bags. Made a huge difference in that overstuffed closet. I know there are a lot more I will let go of but I had a bazillion errands to run today and so had to do it between work and errands. Now I've finished the dishes at my mother's and got a load of clothes in the dryer and feel like it's about time to take my bath and wash my hair and call it a night. Plenty more trips to GTF to donate things and the semi-annual senior citizen rummage sale will probably be in mid-May (at least that's the latest from the grapevine down there). If I get more bagged up tonight I will be pleased but not going to push myself. I'm tired and would rather get a good night's sleep in case the roads are crappy tomorrow!

Aiiieee I should have started this 40 days ago. But no time like the present. I just started a new Weekly Challenge - to do at least 10 minutes a day of decluttering. I spent like 3 hours yesterday and so I'm tired today. And we got derailed with kitchen drain problems, so had the plumbers in this afternoon. So I don't want to stay up all night again tonight. But I can do 10 minutes! (besides, the reycling goes out tomorrow and the more trash and stuff I can get out the door, the better!!).

Come join my challenge to do at least 5 days out of the next 7. If you do more, that's super fantastic (either more minutes per day, or more days of the week!!)!!

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
(yea, I know one of those is for mowing, but it looks like the way I feel when I'm vacuuming!).

Taking 5 bags to the thrift store in GTF from me&2 from mother! I have a few others started but have my own appointment in GTF next Friday so will haul more down there then! Feel like it's been pretty good to motivate me to keep going through stuff! Nowhere near finished so may just try to keep getting a bag a day after the challenge is over on Easter! Combine it with "spring cleaning"!!

Took 3 more bags of crap out of the basement for recycling. I don't think my mother has ever thrown away a plastic container for anything! I really wanted to just chuck the stuff but I put it in the car to take to the recycle place. She wanted me to take it to the senior center but of all the containers that she has there were very few that were of a size they would use. Also packed up another big black garbage bag with clothes to take to the shelter store!

Mice at my mother's and in the basement so we did a lot of cleaning today...she had to admit that her house was dirty and I think it almost killed her to say that!! I have a mess but I don't have mice!!

Anyway, she was cleaning out cupboards, taking everything out and washing off the shelves and organizing. She threw out a lot of stuff! I got 2 bags to donate, 2 to recycle and tossed 1. So it was a good day for Saturday. I'm ahead of the game but still didn't meet my goal to get the kitchen done this week. Will have to carry it over for tomorrow!

Got 11 bags this week in spite of all the setbacks! 2 go to recycle and 6 go to the shelter and the other 3 are already in the dumpster!!

emoticon to those of you who are following along and working on decluttering during this 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge!
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Spent 5 hours up at the ER with my mother. They called me to come get her from the senior center. Thought maybe she was having a stroke. All the tests came back fine. I think it's from not drinking enough water and eating too much sugar crap for breakfast. She was out of yogurt this morning so made herself a strawberry milkshake instead of a smoothie??

2nd bag done! Cleared out a kitchen cabinet of old partial kitchen appliances. Bye bye!

Placed nice appliances we don't use daily in the cabinet. I have a few more cabinets to go.

Been working on this kitchen clean up slowly. Progress is made however.

I managed to throw away one magazine. Har Har!

emoticon It is hard. It's easier now for me than it used to be, but it only comes with time and a change in your emotional attachment. And, since you're new, let me tell you that we all back slide! Ambitious goals! Don't beat yourself up if you can't do 5 items a day or 15 minutes. Baby steps!! And know that we're cheering for you!!

This is my day 1. Iím going to commit to doing 15-30 min per day. Identifying 5 items that must go. Going to hit clothes closet today.

Itís so hard to purge stuff. Lots of emotions and memories are attached to everything. I managed to clean ou 3 drawers, fill a brown grocery bag with trash, fill a hefty bag with clothes for donation, pull together another pile of clothes equivalent to this for consignment, and the bread maker is going. Today.

Thanks for being here. I feel like I just accomplished something.

When you feel the need to begin letting go, shift the focus from letting go to taking some sort of action that advance a goal or dream. When we take hold of something more positive and productive, we are actually letting go of something (or someone) else less positive and productive! Small action steps count more than you could ever imagine!

Hoping to get to the closet aka the front porch if it warms up this weekend and get rid of a whole bunch of clothes from out there! Had 2 boxes (instead of bags) of kitchen items to get rid of. A family at my mom's church had a fire last night and lost everything...so there you go! Passing it on to someone who can use it. Will also get into the boxes of linens and see how much of that we can send their way.

Trying to pace myself! If I do too much shoveling I am so sore I can hardly move the next day! I try to do about 30 minutes then come inside, have a couple glasses of water and relax, bundle back up & go out for round 2 (or 3 or 4)!! Now we're going back below zero with way below zero wind chills for the next 72 hours!

Hopefully being snow bound will force me to keep decluttering when all I really want to do is snuggle under the covers w/the dogs & read & nap until spring thaw arrives!

And the soup was amazing!! Using the crockpot to caramelize the onions overnight makes a world of difference!

Threw out 2 bags of food...mostly from the spice pantry and some baking mixes that I bought on clearance. It's really only 1 bag but was heavy with so much stuff I didn't want to lose bottom of the bags on the way across the snowy alley so used separate bags! Shoveled for an hour, took a break, shoveled another hour, took a break. Now I have had some wonderful French Onion soup that was cooking in the crock pot all night and I'm ready to take a nap.

s-in-40-days/

Lent is 40 Days. This year from February 15th to April 1st. There is a challenge called "40 Bags in 40 Days". There are several versions of this online. The purpose is that since Lent is a time of renewal and reflection you can also declutter your home and help out someone else. I'm putting in just one website but there are Face Book pages and all kinds of information if you just type in "40 Bags in 40 Days" on your search engine. Some just do one item into the big bag-usually this is just clothes-for the 40 days.

I've also opened a thread in the Message Board Challenges on the Community section with the name 40 Bags in 40 Days so you can post there if you are so inclined! I'm very excited about this. I want to declutter my bookcases and I have so many great books that need a new home where they can be read and loved by someone else. I have so many clothes that are in great shape but they are either too small, too big or just not comfortable. They also need a new home. There is also lots of stuff that is not worth donating that just needs to go to the dumpster. I hope you'll join me and others in cleaning and clearing stuff out of your home. Like Spring Cleaning that starts early and benefits you and also those fortunate enough to receive the donations you put in the bags!

*This is just basically copied from what I posted last year. For the Hoarding team you can also sign up at the bottom of the page to track your progress under the goals. I still have SO MUCH to get rid of...but I do believe that this helped me last year and am looking forward to doing it again this year!! Do hope some of you will join me!

Starting this one up again for this year. Got my bag ready for today!! For the first time in over 40 years I didn't mail out or even write out a single valentine. No excuses. Just didn't make time to do it. Been busy finding memes to make e-mails and blogs for my friends who didn't get their usual valentines...between shoveling the mountain of snow and warming up at the computer I am almost at noon!

Sis and I decluttered most of the backporch. It was so good to have help. I put several items in the garage to be carted away. Soon, my workout room will be clear. I also tried my new rechargeable vacuum cleaner and it works well!

I vacuumed my bedroom and bath!

Cleaning out the frig I got rid of 3 bags of stuff! Some close to past date, some past date and some that I just decided I wasn't going to use. I'm trying to get back to low carb. I have a ton of baking mixes but will save those to use at the upcoming rummage sale at the senior center and have a little bake sale table instead of wasting them. Thought of donating them to the food bank but decided I'd actually like to just bake some stuff!
