Shoveling off the roof - especially patio cover, so it doesn't collapse. No fun at all. Broke my big toe and the one next to it on my right foot so the ladder climbing is harder than usual. Then when I get it shoveled off the roof I have to shovel it off the patio or can't get out.

I am taking it slow...well??? But I just get so winded and exhausted. My neighbor was just nagging me about being in ICU for 5 days only a month ago in a medically induced coma. That helped put it into perspective for me. But I did get most of the backyard raked and bagged. Seems there is just so much to do and I lost so much time and if I don't get it done now the snow will fly and it will have to be put off until Spring. Geez Louise, not like that has happened before for whatever reason.

I did call the Rudyard Senior Center and tell them I would be unable to work as the substitute cook on the 2nd and 4th. I just don't have the strength and stamina to do it. When I committed I was sure I would be fine by then. I have to go to Great Falls (120 miles south) to see the surgeon and get a CT and PET scan and then see my regular PCP at the V.A. clinic on Tuesday so I figured I would just be home on Monday and Wednesday working on my own things instead of driving to Rudyard to cook. I've never turned down work in my life so it was truly a first for me...and it feels pretty good. So good I scheduled a massage for Monday morning!

My old dogs love that I am laying around reading and napping so much. I'm kind of hoping that we don't have the bitter cold and the snow they are predicting in the Farmer's Almanac and with the La Nina. I think this might be the last winter for my beloved dogs. We've had a great run and it's been wonderful to be home with them so much since March.

Well, laundry is waiting so I best get at it. Have a great week. I have set some great goals for November that will keep me busy and getting better everyday!
Linda

My neck and jaw are still sore and swollen. Warm liquids still feel the most soothing of anything. I've got several new varieties of tea to try! And I've always been a coffee drinker so this is a whole new world for me!! Still sleeping a lot but getting in more chores. Had our first snow Friday night. Lots of yard work will not get done before Spring...AGAIN!! Will have a follow-up check-up CT scan and appointment with the surgeon on November 3rd. Glad to have the staples out of my neck although it might have made a nice touch to a Halloween costume....which would have been covered by a mask anyway?? Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

So I was approached yesterday about helping pack up this elderly woman who has to move from her apartment after 33 years. The people approaching me are way into the Drama Queen mode. I kept thinking I have too much to do and a short amount of time to do it because of the summer coming to an end - getting the lawn aerated and re-seeded in the front and a bunch of weeds pulled and flowers divided and given away and the house in the front scraped, primed and painted. But it's only 2 weeks. Tossed and turned thinking about it...not really. I was escaping into a new book I bought and read ALL NIGHT LONG!

But I had several insights. I would refuse to put stuff in totes and boxes to go to storage. She's 84. Has no family - never had children. Her closest relative is a nephew in a neighboring state and he wants NONE of the stuff. The plan is to move her into these beautiful new apartments. The rent includes meals, housekeeping, TV and cable. $4500 per month. She qualifies for Medicaid waiver so her rent would be $500. She pays $400 now and the landlord is doubling her rent to $800. There is no reason to put anything into storage. She is never going to have a place big enough to use it. Another point I would make was that she could only keep the stuff that was really important to her. Knowing it is major upheaval and lots of drama she would need to look at it as a chance to have a new start in a new place. I didn't make the morning appointment with her. Overslept because I read all night.

I went down and talked to a couple other friends about if they would help me pack up her stuff. We talked about the situation. Truly the woman who approached me created all this drama. Not nearly the fear and trauma that was the reality. I went to meet the woman on my own. I liked her VERY MUCH!! A lot of the stuff is sentimental but she realizes it's junk. She and her 2 old blue hair pals had a rummage sale and each made only $20. I told her neither of the thrift stores are accepting donations at this time. And explained how many people are downsizing during their forced incarceration at home. We had a lovely visit. I identified furniture that could be sold online and she told me most of the knick-knacks were just junk that could go to the garbage.

Now I will work on getting a pick-up and getting all the stuff out of her basement. The toys and things that she used in a day care and foster care situation years ago can all go to the local Head Start place. I will find some kids to help me haul stuff.

But in thinking of how I would best approach her in this situation and how I would keep her from getting depressed over letting go of all the stuff, it made me realize that a lot of the things I have not wanted to let go of are in this same vein. When I die someone else will just toss them. It has been and will be a real learning experience for me.

Her Medicaid waiver will probably not come through by the first of the month but the landlord is not really going to throw her out into the street. She will just have to pay the additional money in rent until she can get into the new, nice place. I will push for that to happen. The woman in charge told me they could move her to another apartment and then move her again when the waiver came through. NO!! She can't go through 2 moves plus it's stupid to pay all the disconnect and re-connect fees associated with moving to this other apartment and then again when the waiver comes through. I will point that out.

I really struggled about whether I was even going to do the job because of having so much of my own stuff to do, but I realized how much I could help this woman and how much I will learn from it. Amazing how that works??!

Looks like my beautiful container flowers get another week to delight me! I pinched off several new flowers on the tomatoes. No chance they will grow to maturity. Swear this is the last year I am planting tomatoes!

I am in love with my petunias! Both the 'wave' and the regular are just gorgeous. I think I am going to limit myself to geraniums and petunias and marigolds next year. So much of the other stuff is just too much work. I love my perennials so will still have plenty of other stuff but the darn daisies need too much water. Several other things just couldn't do with the heat of July/August and gave up the ghost. But the old standards just hang in there and keep the color coming.

I'm just finishing up the 3rd sinkfull of dishes! Cleaned out the frig! I use the various sizes of Pyrex glass bowls so I can tell at a glance what is in them!! Too many recycled cool whip bowls and margarine tubs in my mom's frig while growing up ruined me to plastic! if I can't see it, I forget about it!
The crew finished up the last field of winter wheat today (Monday) and the spring wheat is not quite ready. I'm so happy for the break!
Hauled 4 crock pot to the basement storage shelves. Will clean out the 2 coolers I use to haul ice and cold food tomorrow! Will also make a huge lasagna and put it in the freezer. Stuff all ready and so don't want to waste it!
Great to have a few days to get the lawn mowed and some weeding done. Planted fall mums in containers tonight! Watered all the containers with their miracle grow cocktail! So much of my own stuff is neglected during harvest but it's fun and I make really good money doing it! I love the guy I work for and so many of the same people from year to year! It's great to see them and catch up and they are all so appreciative!
The pups will be thrilled to have me home! Not been too hot but the grasshoppers are horrible out in farm country! Here in town the mosquitos are fierce! The county has run out of the chemical they spray them with so I am glad to see a few bats in the night sky!
An old friend will be visiting in GTF so thrilled I will be able to run down and see her on Friday! Have 3 milk crates of books for her! I hope to get over to Rapid City and the Black Hills this fall to see her! Been too long since I visited that area! Such a bizarre year! Need to finish some projects around the house and take some time to enjoy the outdoors before winter sets in.

"What are life weeds?

Life weeds are -"All of the unwanted things that creep into our lives and before we know it they have choked the life out of the things that actually do matter." Joshua Becker

Life weeds can be subtle things, things that are not necessarily bad, or things we even think are necessary. But if we are honest with ourselves all they do is distract us from the true plants we want to grow in our lives, like family, love, friendship, happiness, purpose, and health.

Here are some life weeds we find in our daily lives:

Extra obligations
Social media
Negative People
Debt
Netflix
Junk email
Clutter
Too many kids toys
Too much laundry
We could go on and on!

What life weeds do you have in your garden that you could remove? Try removing just one of them this week and see if your plants start to grow stronger. "

That's great news and inspires me, Donna!! I have felt so crummy lately and looking around makes me feel worse. I started yesterday to get things back in some kind of workable shape as harvest cooking will start on Monday August 3rd (which is late for us, here)! It's going slow and steady and not as overwhelming as it is sometimes. Still lots to do but you are right that it does feel great as we accomplish the tasks!

Thanks! I am having some medical issues and just not feeling like I can keep up with much internet time right now. Harvest will start soon and I am not feeling very confident about cooking for the crew. I know it will get better but I sure feel washed out these daze!

Saw in the paper that Havre was the big winner with .28 inches of rain on Sunday. It was amazing how quickly it came and went. I was going to drive to Rudyard (42 miles) to make potato salad and clean and cut chickens that I was serving for lunch on Monday. It was just about 2:30 and the sky opened up and the rain just pounded down, turned to hail, just little bb sized stuff, more rain and wind. So I took a nap. Headed out to Rudyard at 7:30 p.m. Got to Hingham and the last 6 miles to Rudyard I couldn't really see through the windshield because the wipers just couldn't keep up. It was scary. A friend (her husband is on the harvest crew I cook for) posted pictures of the little hail they got there in Rudyard but I missed that.
I have bad knees and try to get my injections a couple weeks before harvest. My mom's goofy little dog jumped up and smacked me on the right knee cap a couple weeks ago. It took my breath away. Felt almost like I hyper-extended it backwards since I was walking at the time. Tears sprang to my eyes and I had to sit down and put my head between my knees to keep from passing out. It was really bruised. Didn't think much about it-it just hurt but it always hurts. But I have been having a hard time working on the cement floors. Swollen ankles and just tire easily. Trying different kinds of compression socks and heights of shoes but nothing really helping. Soaking in Epsom salts at night and keeping my feet up on a wedge at night. But I woke up last Tuesday and thought I might not be able to get out of bed. It was my lower back - not hip exactly, more like my S-I joint, but just agony. Of course the guy who can usually fix me with massage is working most of the time in Frenchtown (200 miles away) now. Good thing I hoard pain pills because that's how I got through the week. Standing was the best. Sitting was torture so getting out of the car in Rudyard after an hour of driving was not pretty.
Kevin called me yesterday 3 times while I was still in Rudyard. He is seeing Havre clients on Monday and Tuesday. Long story short he got me in at 7:30 last night. He dug into those muscles with his elbow. I'm quite bruised today but know that I will start to feel better. I had to skip my trip to the Helena V.A. last Wednesday for my knee injections and am now fighting them about getting in before September. I should just bite the bullet and get the knee replacement but I'm just not ready for that rehab.

50% chance of rain Friday morning and Friday night. Then dry and warming up! I've done something to my lower back. Extremely painful to sit or rise from sitting or lying! Standing is easiest! I really needed my Synvisc injections on Wednesday but just no way I could drive 8 hours for a 15 minute appointment! Will check to see if I can get them locally? I was told next available appointment was September so hoping I can use the newest version of the choice program for veterans. Really need to get it on board before I start cooking for my harvest crew - probably mid-July! I 'borrowed ' a couple of Gus's tramadol! Thank God it's Friday and will have 2 days to recover! Next week is my last 4 days of filling in at Rudyard. Nice little town! They've had a sign on the highway all my life that says "Welcome to Rudyard! 596 nice people, one old sore head". I've enjoyed the drive - watching the wheat grow and seeing the wildlife! Still can't get over seeing baby antelope after all these years! Lots of herds of antelope graze along Montana highways. I've just never seen the little ones! And all the beautiful rainbows this morning! Not that I ever want to be a 'morning person's but I can do it if I have to!

True beauty comes solely from the inside. It can't be bought; it can't be faked. It's not how you look, or the size clothes you wear. It's not found in your job title, letters after your name or college degree. It does not reflect in your bank account nor the car you drive. True beauty is revealed - or lost - in the moments that test your integrity and character. True beauty comes through when you touch another's heart, without any thought of reward or return. True beauty shows itself best when no one else is looking.
Appreciate true beauty when you find it.

Been driving HWY 2 every morning to a senior center 42 miles away from home! Enjoy the trip. Like watching the progress of the road construction and the condition of the spring and winter wheat! Wednesday, near Kremlin I saw 2 grown antelope and 2 tiny calves! I had to look it up because I knew they weren't fawns?! In all my years I have never seen baby antelope?!!! Lots and lots of antelope - which never seen to get hit by cars. They must be much smarter than the mule deer and white tailed deer? Anyway, I saw the babies again on Thursday and Friday! Makes it worth getting up at dawn!

I've been hoarding books my whole life! Finally started culling the shelves about 10 years ago. Still lots of them boxed up to be gone through plus all the ones I buy at thrift stores - which I have almost given up doing! But I bought the newest David Baldacci and borrowed several books from the shelves at the Rudyard Senior Center!

I guess I hoard books. I had all these scattered around my bedroom! I did read them all as well as the many I got from the library.

Love heading into the season of fresh, local produce! Had the first radishes and spinach from my garden this week! The raspberry bushes look like they are loaded with buds so here's hoping they perform as well as the lilacs did this year!

I have been working outside instead of in the mess plus the temp job! I searched for a couple hours for my W-2 because I got a call the AARP was doing taxes! They had cancelled me due to COVID-19 shutdown so I got the forms then stashed them in the illusive safe spot to deal with in August! Have myself a break and just went to the county and had them print me a copy! Problem solved and taxes done - and 2 bags of paper clutter to the recycler!

Thanks for your quotes and your stories, Linda. You are an inspiration.

Re: the sewing machine. Recently I started using a new strategy for times when I worry that I might need something some day. I give myself permission to give it away, promising myself that if I really need it later, I am allowed to borrow or buy a new one. In the end, I probably save money that way...it costs money to hoard all that stuff, someties. And "later" has never arrived yet for any of the things I've given away. I have to struggle to part with things, but once they are gone, I have very few regrets.

"You eat to nourish your body. You sleep to rejuvenate your spirit. You study, work, and apply yourself for emotional gains. You exercise to tighten your muscles. You listen to music to entertain yourself.

You're not at all adverse to investing time and energy for the rewards you seek.

So how about you spare just a few minutes every day to visualize the life of your dreams? Because nothing else you could ever do will make such a profound difference in your fortunes and misfortunes as working with new pictures in your mind.

Can you start today?"

I think this really applies to dealing with hoarding issues! Lots of people have NO idea how to help and just cause more shame and frustration!

Baked a dozen blueberry muffins and then a dozen banana walnut muffins at my mom's Saturday morning to warm up the kitchen! Pulled lots of weeds and rhubarb at my house then went up the hill to Darren and Denise's and pulled another wagon load of rhubarb. She has the good Canada red kind! Mine isn't nearly as good or prolific as hers! Had a wonderful visit with them both! Just too long between visits!
Didn't get nearly as much done outside as planned but it was still a productive day! Did haul 3 55 gallon loads of weeds and rhubarb ends and leaves to the compost pile. Hard rain for about 15 minutes then the sun came out for a nice evening!

Our dorky little movie theater is opening on Friday! Only 2 shows per day instead of 4 and limited, spaced seating. They will have "Jaws", "E.T." , "Jurassic Park" and one other my feeble mind has forgotten already. I never saw "Jaws" on the big screen so will try to catch that! Also would see "E.T." again just because! Pingpong ball sized hail earlier tonight! Glad I didn't plant those containers!

I joined the Minimalist's unclutter mission this time. I just need the push to get the last things out and gone.
The first thing to do was find your Why.
Such as be from stuff.
Live your life for you and not to take care of your things.
To be free and happy.
Etc.
I know I have to let the rest of the stuff go. I have some things I haven't used in years.
I plan on giving my sewing machine(which I haven't used in years) to my older son and daughter in law.
I had to actually fight with myself about it such as but what if I want to make something. emoticon
What if I need to sew something. emoticon (It's been sitting doing nothing for years) Stop being so selfish and bless someone with it who wants one. emoticon
So that is it. I told them they could have it. emoticon
I am working on other things. I will let you know how it goes.

Wonky internet! Sorry I haven't been posting! Who knows? Windy but not supposed to affect fiber optics? Maybe it's the virus?

Just like the moon, life goes through phases. This phase we’re now in, enduring the darkness created by the pandemic will also pass. Then once again, together we will shine bright!

Until further notice the daze of the week are now called Thisday, Thatday, Otherday, Someday, Yesterday, Today and Nextday.
*Seriously, on Sunday I thought it was Monday and all day Thursday, I thought it was Wednesday.
Many people are posting memes or talking about coming out of this quarantine with a new skill or side hustle. I'm just sitting here wondering how I never noticed there's a turd in Saturday.
