Another pound gone! I will be thrilled if I can fit into my black dress pants by Christmas.

I'm down with a stomach bug, but this will be our last nice day for a while, so I will try to work on that fence this afternoon.

Now that the leaves are flying off the tress, I have been getting some projects together to work on. Started making cupcake pot holders, figured I'd give them as a gift with a cupcake tin, as a gift. Also, I enjoy sitting in front of the tv knitting cotton washclothes, then will buy homemade goat soap to give as gifts. Saw an adorabe teabag shape lavendar sachet holder on the tipnut site. Will make some of these too. I just love crafting and reading! Keeps my hands and mind busy.

It's a beautiful fall day! Winter is rapidly approaching so this is the best time to get some stuff done outside. Today my challenge is to put permanent attachment hardware on the chain link section of the fence. I don't want to have to do this in cold weather!

If I don't get this done today, someone please smack me in the head!!!

Well, when you're not quite 5'2", 140's is HEAVY!!! I'm going to have to work my butt off this week to get back down, if that's even possible. Shame on me! Grandson is back with his mom and dad, so I have no excuses.

I don't want to be in the 140's. I had people tell me I lost too much weight when I was in the 150's but I would like to get back in the 150's again.

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

Most barriers to your success are man-made. And most often, you're the man who made them.- Frank Tyger

Are you your own obstacle?

Are you trying to stick to a fitness plan, improve a relationship, eliminate fast food from your diet, or be a better parent? Whatever your goal, was there a time when you thought you couldn't do it? This is a natural reaction when things get tough. It's easier to find ways to justify your actions than to get over the hurdle. This week, eliminate the hurdles and barriers you've created. If you find yourself saying, "I can't" or "I don't have time," then re-analyze your goal. If you really want to achieve it, then make the time or take a different approach (get up earlier, stay organized, learn the skills). Find time for you and your goals.

Arghhh! I finally made it to the 140's on Friday morning and then my 3 year old grandson arrived for the weekend. I did great on Friday, and then exhaustion got me today. It was horrible! But I wore him out too, so got him to bed early tonight. Hopefully I'll get back on track tomorrow.

Hope everyone's having a good weekend!

If you know the art of breathing you have the strength, wisdom, and courage of ten tigers.- Chinese adage

Just Breathe

Breathing is one of the most overlooked aspects of good health. Oxygen is fuel for the brain and the body. Good, clean air boosts your physical and mental performance and helps lower stress. Whatever goal you're working for, proper breathing will help you reach it.

Crispy and cloudy here. A very gray day. It's still too warm for snow, although we almost always have snow for Halloween. I'd be thrilled if it stayed in the 60's through the winter!

It's kind of funny. My Florida greyhound likes these cold mornings and my boxer/beagle from Utah hates them.

Good Morning, it is another crisp fall morning with the sun shining.
DD's quilt group meets at our car lot and they are making stack and whack quilts. Ever done that?

That's terrific Marlene. That means you are in really good shape. It's probably a good thing it happened fast. Otherwise someone might have had time to make a video and put it on YouTube! Of course then you could have become a celebrity.

Still no ill effects of my mishap. I feel foolish but it happened and it happened fast. Good thing I had on a slip as my skirt flew up. Just glad that I did not break something.

I did it! I got through the circuit training workout and my back is even better. I marched in place instead of jumping jacks and jumping rope. Probably didn't burn nearly enough calories, but at least I got a workout.

So glad you were not hurt! That must have really shocked the people you were chatting with. I'm going to try some yoga after my next batch of meds to see if that will pop my back in place. I think my elbow is finally healed enough to do some gentle yoga. You're doing great Marlene and I'm a disaster!

My mishap was not because of my DH but my negligence.
I must be in fair shape. As I was coming out of the church building this morning, I was chatting away and backed off the step falling on my elbow and back. It really jarred my shoulder and I will probably feel it tomorrow but I got back up and kept right on chatting. Just clumsy. I don't feel any ill effects probably because I landed in the grass. I did get a couple sand stickers in my pantyhose..

Thanks Sherree. I didn't have to whack him, his dog woke him up at 2am to go out because I couldn't walk him before bed. Poetic justice?

I still can't stand up straight, so my workout schedule is probably blown for the whole week. I am sooo mad right now. I'll really have to watch my calories this week and keep up with the ibuprofen. Luckily I have my annual with my doc on Tuesday, so maybe he can pop it back in place.

I hope you are having a great Sunday!

I did some political volunteer work this morning and met some very nice people, whether we agreed or not. Then my husband called me to tell me we needed to get to Golden (45 miles away) to go to a car show with family. So we dropped the truck off at Costco for tire rotation and squeeze the four of us into the little 4 seater Subaru to continue on to Golden.

The car show was an old fashioned, old town cruise on Main St with hundreds of cars of all makes and vintages. It was amazing! But then my husband wandered off for an hour and left me with the dogs.

They jumped at a little dog coming down the sidewalk that I hadn't seen. So, wrenched my back. Husband was gone for an hour and couldn't hear his cell phone, so I got the dogs back to the car and waited, and waited, and waited. If we had a dog house, my husband would be in it!

Took a bunch of pills, so I'm off to bed to see if my back will improve.

You had a much better day than me Sherree. If I can't work out tomorrow, my husband is dead meat!

Well, this morning when I woke up, I pulled 2 under-bed storage containers out to see what was in there. I had stashed clothes I outgrew in there, it turns out. I tried everything on and found several things I can wear again, and some I will be able to wear again soon, and some I would never wear again, even if they fit perfectly. :-) The things I can wear now, I put in the laundry to take next time. The almost fitting ones I put back in one of the containers, the other stuff I put in the Salvation Army pile.

Then I started tackling my current clothes. I started with one skirt in particular that I like a lot. It is a light denim blue with embroidered tulips all over and a pretty border along the bottom. The problem is, I have taken in the elastic a few times now, but there is just too much material now. And because my curves are less curvy, it got too long. It just looks frumpy. So I cut the top completely off. I didn't do anything else, yet, but I think I will have to cut off the side pockets, cut the skirt down, sew the pockets back on and re-seam the sides...oh and put the hem back in place on the sides.

My underwear are in need of shrinking, too! I took one pair in, but I need to do a lot more than that!

I cut the pieces of a pattern apart today, too. Now, I just need to find the time to cut out the material and sew it.

I went swimming today for 90 minutes, and then I had to stop at JoAnn's for some bias tape. Then I went to Sweet Tomatoes for a fresh dinner. Now I am getting sleepy.

The neighbors down the street decided to have a street party last night and woke me from a sound sleep at 2:20 a.m. I waited awhile to see if they were just saying good night or something, but no, the rap continued rattling my windows and the folks continued yelling and pounding on what sounded like an old car hood. Finally, I got up and opened my window, it was then I realized they were too far away to yell at and the music was so loud, they would have never heard me anyway. I went to the restroom, the innermost room of my apartment with no windows at all, and I could still hear it with my windows and the bathroom door closed. Finally, I called the police. I hate to do that, but I can't sleep through noises like that, and I wasn't going to get all dressed and walk downstairs and down the block to ask them to stop, because I would definitely never get back to sleep after that. The police came in about 30 minutes and I heard a loud car leave, taking the rap music with him. Then quiet. Maybe it wasn't my neighbors at all, but just some nomads. I don't know, but I was glad when it quieted down! I got back to sleep around 3:30.

Oh well, at least I got a few things done today!

I hope your weekends are all going well!
Sherree

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

Suffering is the tuition one pays for a character degree.- Richard M. Rayner, M.D., SparkPeople member

What you really learn from hardships

"Perhaps you think this isn't very positive' sounding, but I find it helps people (patients and friends) put hardship, which is inevitable, to good use," says Richard. "People can use their suffering either to gain character or become bitter. The ones who choose bitterness live a long, slow death. The ones who choose character truly live." Richard is right on the money. Happiness and sadness don't happen to us--they come from within. The story of your life will be written with or without your help. The next chapter is happening while you read this. Will you wait to see what it says later, or will you help write it?

Jillian has me on 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat. So far that seems to be really working for me. No cravings! I even went to Costco yesterday and passed on the mocha latte freeze, (first time all summer). Then I went out to dinner with friends and got a small quesadilla at Outback. Good thing I only ate half of it, because 1/2 was 558 calories! Well, that's with the honey mustard sauce which I had omitted, but that's still around 500 calories. Even at that, I still didn't quite make it to 1200 calories for the day.

Also did a 500 calorie circuit training workout and took the dogs on two 1-mile walks.

I do get to eat rice, potatoes and bread, just so long as it's whole or sprouted grain, brown rice or sweet potato and in small amounts. And sadly, I can't put any butter on anything!

Never thought I'd say this, but I like egg white omelets! And I found Applegate nitrate-free turkey bacon that actually tastes like real food. Another plus is that it doesn't make a mess of the stove like real bacon.

It's going to take us a while, but we will get there!

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

The smallest good deed is better than the grandest intention.- Barbara Walters

Are you making a difference?

Have you ever said "I want to help do this" or "I'd like to be involved in that"? Many people have grand intentions but forget about the importance of following through. It is far better to take the time to complete small deeds than to spend your time talking about what you want to do someday. Sometimes you may feel that a small deed will not make a difference. Just remember that every bit--even a small bit--helps. Every good deed makes a difference to someone.

Well, Carboholic08, a half pound is better than nothing! Shake it off and get busy tracking your food (before you eat it) and MOVE MOVE MOVE! Make sure you have updated your nutrition goals to take into account what you weigh now and what exercises you are doing now. In your heart, you know what you should eat, that is LOTS of FRESH vegetables, lean meats and fish (not as much as veggies), fresh fruits. Limit to very small amounts any white foods. That is potatoes, breads, and pastas. I love them all, but if I eat a bunch of any of them, I don't lose as much weight. I usually allow myself one serving of something white per week. I am talking about 1/4 cup of rice, or something like that. Try to balance your proteins and carbs. You should only be eating a BIT more carbs than proteins. So if it is a 2 to 1, carb to protein ratio, try fixing that. I can tell you it helps! I just went to the nutritionist today for my monthly checkup and lost a LOT of body fat! We can do this!

Well, I weighed in today and lost that same half pound that I've lost at least two other times. This is not good since I've been with SP for almost two years. I need to find a way to maintain my weight loss even when life gets in the way.

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS

Stand for something or fall for anything.- Anonymous

What do you stand for?

Have you ever thought about the power of having a purpose? Everyone needs something that gets them moving in the morning, keeps them going through the day, and makes them continue to work toward a goal. Take some time to think about the activities you are involved in and how they relate to your personal purpose. For the activities that don't serve your purpose, ask yourself why you continue with them. Perhaps you need to reevaluate your commitments and renew your conviction toward your purpose.

Me too Marlene. I'm much better at cooking!

My grandson is only picky about his shoes. In my profile pic, I couldn't get him to change into a shirt that matched his pants. He had to get outside to play with the dogs in his pajama top. That may change in another 10 years though.

I did not make good grades in sewing but I did a lot of sewing when my kids were growing up, even made grandkids clothes but not the great grands. They are too picky. I made A's in cooking so guess I like to cook better than sew.

Carboholic,
I posted a blog on how to sew one. I included a drawing. I will send you the drawing, too, if you tell me your email address, since the website shrunk my picture. Maybe that will help to explain what I was trying to describe. :-) I tried adding it to a SparkMail, but it only lets you add links.

Sherree, I now know why I nearly flunked the sewing part of home ec in hs. (My grandmother finished the dress for me.) The strips have me baffled!

My successful sewing has been simple curtains. I was doing pretty good with those until my daughter decided to make her own. She did to my machine, what I did to my grandmother's! Is that Karma?

My wrist and elbow are improving, but still having problems with fine motor skills. Plus my machine is buried in the basement and I'll have to get stronger to move a few boxes. DH is still on oxygen and his hose won't reach that far. Hopefully by the end of October, we'll both be back to normal!

Since Halloween is on a Sunday this year, some one just might have a party and we'll need costumes.

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

If you are a sewing buddy, you can easily make one. Cut out two rectangles or ovals, if you prefer, and measure around them to find how long the middle strips should be. Make a mark on the bottom middle edge of each rectangle as a starting spot. Cut two strips of material, Sew them together (right sides together) leaving a space in the center for your zipper. Sew the zipper to the strips on either side of the zipper. Sew a rectangle to one side of the strip, starting at your marking on the bottom edge of the rectangle and leaving a seam allowance on the end of the strip, clipping corners as necessary. Line up the corners of the second rectangle with the corners of the first one. Unzip the zipper, and sew that rectangle on. At the bottom, Fold everything out of the way, so you can make the seam in the two ends of the strip. Turn the packet right-side-out, put your stuff in and stick it in your pocket. When that one wears out, you can re-use the zipper on the next one.

You can even get fancy and put a bill pocket inside on one of the rectangles, before you sew the strip on. Or a small change pocket on one of the rectangles, or both! Go crazy. It hardly takes any material!

Have fun,
Sherree

You are so clever! I'll have to look for something like that. I lost a $5 bill last month.

I don't carry a purse anymore either, but I lost some money by just putting it and the credit cards in my pocket. So, I had a little 6 inch zipper laying around and I took some pretty embroidered denim I had made a skirt out of, and made a small zippered packet to hold my money and credit cards. I even have a small pen that fits in there and I carry lip balm there, too! I don't wear any skirt or pants or shorts without pockets. If I buy ready-made ones, I add pockets.

I did the budget plan for $3.49 a week. They bill me $45.37 every 13 weeks and I can cancel at any time. For $5.00 a week, you get a more personalized plan.

I definitely spend more time outdoors in the summer. Hopefully we won't have too much snow and cold this winter, although I am looking forward to the change. I miss the long days of summer though.

I've gotten so bad that I don't even carry a purse anymore. I just put a few dollars and a credit card in my pocket and go. If I have the dogs, there's a pocket for treats.

Thank-you for the re-minder spark email! I am sure more will return, as it is getting to be sewing weather, in many parts of the country. At least in my area of the world emoticon

anyone have a pattern for a tabboggin...looks like might be double crochet.... i have yard and promised my DSN i would make him one but between packing to move and being sick off and on and all the drs visits and procedures, i havent been able to search out a pattern similar to what he wants.

Having a hard time kicking this bronchitis...leaf mold is the culprit and theres still plenty of that here in the hills to last all winter.

That's a really cute dress! I have to have pockets too. You rarely see me in anything but jeans though.

I was looking at workout clothes at Penney's and couldn't find anything with pockets! A clerk looked for me too and she said I was the second person that week looking for pockets. These manufacturers need to get a clue. We need a place to put the Wii Remote!

Congratulations on keeping up with the exercise! That's great. I hope I can be as dedicated!

Hi Everybody!

I've been so busy swimming after work 5 nights a week and trying to get all my other work done, that I have been a bit slow at posting anything.

I did buy some new lightweight denim material to make a new Vogue pattern I have for a dress.
www.voguefabricsstore.com/store/cata
lo
g/Vogue-Pattern-1101-Misses-Tunic-anR>d-Dress-by-Sandra-Betzina-p-10207.html

The whole thing is on the bias, which is kind of new to me, and it includes some faux-chenille effect at the sweetheart neckline. I like the short-sleeved version, but I will put side seam pockets instead of the pockets they have. I tend to use my pockets and the ones they use would look bad with things in them.

I am hoping to make that this weekend. I did laundry last night and washed the material, so I should be ready to go.

I also need to pull my skirts out of the closet and check them for fit and make adjustments. I have a LOT of skirts, but I made them 56 pounds ago (mostly), so they are too loose and have even gotten too long in some instances, since my body mass isn't pushing them outward anymore. So I may just cut off the waistbands (where it won't interfere with the pockets) and put in new ones.

What are you guys working on?

Hi Carolyn. It's a little cooler here, but warming up quickly. We've had record heat here in Colorado throughout September, most days in the 90's. We're all ready for cooler weather!

Our recently adopted greyhound came from Florida, so he's never seen snow. I hope he likes it!

I have a broken sewing machine that I've been meaning to fix for two years. Most of my "sewing" has actually been mending. Now that I have the dogs, I have lots of mending to do and I'd like to make them some coats. Dog clothing is outrageously pricey!

Now that my arm is on the mend, I have a lot of housework to catch up on and then I hope to drag out that sewing machine and get busy.

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.
