Did my first water workout in two years...aerobic moves and pool jogging. So happy to be near a pool again!

@MON_THURS , that is very creative and a great idea. I don't know if I can put something like that together so I am going to look around online and see if I can get a set at an affordable price. Thanks for sharing the idea. I have been just walking in the pool and want to challenge myself more.

Hi @ESMERELDA12 ! When I was exercising in the pool (soon I will be able to return again!), since it was kind of new for me, all I was doing was walking back and forth, moving my arms a lot, things like that. I would also swim back and forth using the dog paddle since it is not a big pool. Then I bought a small board and have been using it to strengthen my legs. I want to buy the barbells to work on my arms. I am thinking of doing research online to find exercises to do in the pool since I can't attend a water aerobics at this time.

Hi @BIGPOPPAPUFF ! I am like you in that I don't have a car and rely on others for transportation. I am lucky since I live where there is a pool. I hope you can go to the gym twice a week with your friend. You did emoticon

Hi @COMEBACKKID12 ! How are things this week? I know you have exercised in the water because I read everyone's feed. Can't wait to be in the water again!

Part of the time, we are using the 'dumb-bell-floaties' while we are jogging in place, doing jumping jacks, twisting, etc. Its our reg routine. Going to guess & say that we use the dumb-bells during half of the routine. When it gets towards the end & my shoulders are starting to hurt, then I make all the same arm movements (but, without the dumb-bells.)

I checked with our pool manager today and he suggested I try using the paddles they use in the classes. They're a little like dumbbells and you can adjust the amount of resistance they add by opening or closing them. It seems to work although I had to adjust my pace today in order to concentrate on my form. I'm sure I'll get used to them pretty quickly and it does seem to be doing a little more for my upper body. I like the breast stroke idea and will try it this week. He also suggested that I might want to add a few chin ups each day. Do any of you combine other water exercises with jogging?

The water aerobics class I'm in has some home-made barbells, as well. It looks like they made them from PVC pipe & 2 cut pieces of a pool noodle on either side of where you would grip it with your hand. (I checked them & see that there plastic plugs on either end of them, too.) There are several sets, enough for the whole class. These work really well.

Thanks, @COMEBACKKID12 ! I needed to remember that the hands themselves can serve as a resistance aid in the water. Where I live, the pool has no water weights or anything so until I get some for myself, I will use your ideas. Thanks! emoticon

hi Esmeralda emoticon I have done my deep water aerobics class that is about 50% jogging. For upper body strength, they have these styrofoam mini barbells we use for upper body resistance. They are usually in a bin near the pool. With those, we box forward with bells in the water. Then we use them as if we were skiing or as if we were in an elliptical. Another exercise is that we do breast stroke arms one direction. Another is we do breast stroke arms the other direction.

if you can't find the bells, you can use your hands like this:

Cup your fingers and scoop the water alternating your hands.
Use your arms like you were swimming standing up and slice your arms through the water full range of motion.
Do the breast stroke arms without the barbells.
Push the water in front of you like you were playing patty-cake, alternating arms, elbows bent.

Warm up your upper body and arms first before doing any fast movements.

Hope this helps! emoticon

Hi Esmeralda!

I will be starting to exercise in water again as soon as the staples are off from my knee surgery and I have been asking myself the same question. I found this article that I will use for ideas for myself. I don't have any water weights yet so I will be using my arms under water for resistance:

Spent a lovely session in the pool today. I'm experimenting with using paddles when I jog so I can adjust the level of resistance. My legs have definitely grown stronger over the past year but I would like to add a little extra upper body boost. Opinions? Pointers?

I jog too. I start out getting warmed up by walking about a bit, doing bobs up and down/in and out of the water, and basic movements for a while. Then when my muscles get warmed up I jog about the pool. When I'm done I like to do specific exercises before getting out--switching it up each time.

I've watched a bunch, too. I think there are just different styles just like running on land. There are high-knee sprinters. I'm more of a cross-country, loping sort of style. Not too fast, but good endurance. I'm actually doing some water aerobics as well each week. Good to meet you!

I aqua jog after my water aerobics classes. I have watched all types of you tube videos about it and still don't know if I am doing it right. Any video suggestions?

I know the heat affects you like me. Right now I can't swim in the pool because it is just too hot. I am thinking of doing again starting at the end or mid-October? I will be getting some water weights then to use. Let me know how you like it. emoticon

Hi, Esmeralda! I just joined this team and I am very interested in this type of exercise. I went on Amazon and found the following. I like it becuase it seems to be a package for water aerobics. Here it is:

I hope to be able to buy these next month. Let me know what you think or if you found something else to work with. Thanks!

P.S. If the link doesn't work, go to www.swimoutlet.com and search under aquatic fitness kit.

I've been aqua-jogging for almost a year. This summer I'm alternating with water aerobics. Does anyone else water jog? I would love tips, etc.!
