That's interesting about the calories... it's uncharacteristically cold in Florida this week and I was hungry during my run this AM, which never happens. When I logged my mileage, my calorie burn was lower than normal b/c I was running slower (just couldn't get the muscles warmed up), so I wasn't sure aboutthe calorie burn... it sure felt MUCH harder to run in this cold weather than in the heat.

I think running in colder weather is so much easier. A friend of mine who is a trainer said I would burn more calories running in the cold. I haven't ventured out past 23F but I do feel like I can run much further in the cold.

I have a half this Saturday and it's supposed to be around 15 degrees that morning with a hard freeze warning. I HATE running when I'm cold even with the right gear on. Sort of a bummer because I wanted to PR but I know the conditions won't be optimal.

My personal feeling is that you can run through pretty much anything as long as you're dressed appropriately. But you also have to keep in mind that the weather WILL affect your runs, whether that means shortening the run or forcing you to run slower.

Trust me, I'm the girl who was disappointed that she can't hold a 6:00/mile pace through a blizzard (yes, I did run in the Christmas blizzard!) or during a tropical storm.
Note: I don't advise running in blizzards or tropical storms. I'm kind of known on my team for my "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger" attitude (read that as: "my insanity"). If you DO choose to run in really awful weather, make sure you have a phone on you in case something happens and wear as much neon and reflective stuff as you can (bonus points for blinking lights!)

Ok. I've discovered that I like running in the cold!

So yeah. 45 minutes including warm up and cool down, and stretching. I'm happy with myself!

I'm about to start my running training tonight, and as of this moment, it's -15 C (5 F I think). It isn't exactly the most runner friendly out there, but I figure if I get myself dressed for it and then just buckle down then I'll get thru it.

Thanks! Believe it or not, it actually worked! Sort of. After reading everyone's posts here, I decided just to suck it up and get out there. I told myself that I would at least do 2 miles, and after that, if it was too awful out, then I would come in.

So, I got my butt out there, and ended up doing 3.67 miles. Not exactly the 6 that I wanted, but considering that I wasn't even intending on going out at all, I'm pretty proud of myself. It was extremely cold though, that was literally the coldest weather I've ever ran in. With the wind chill, it was around 5 degrees, according to the Weather Channel.

So, thank you team for giving me the kick that I needed! emoticon

I'm struggling with this dilemma right this very moment! It's extremely windy out, and with the wind chill, it's right around zero. I should be doing a 6 miler today, but it's just so hard to get out that door! Can someone come over and help shove me out the door? Please? emoticon

I have those days too, where I just don't want to get out there and run, I figure those miles aren't going to run them selves :) plus I have a full marathon I am training for and unless I want to walk the whole think I need to get my butt out there and train. I sign up for races so I know I have to train...lol!

I'm new to the team, and when I saw this thread I thought it meant something entirely different:
running when the "I Don't Feel Like It" forecast is negative! Thanks for the laugh, anyway!

Hmmm... any tips for my interpretation? (Other than "just do it!")

I say layer up and go for it. I just came in from a 5 miler and the temperature was 15 without counting in the windchill.

I live in South Dakota and I have yet to brave the cold outside...I have a 4 mile race in February so I'm going to have to soon!

I've frequently run outside when the wind chill is in the negatives - just make sure that you dress in lots of breatheable layers and you have any sort of face mask, I would wear it to protect your skin. I normally always wear sunglasses too, even if it's not sunny, to keep the wind out of my eyes. And if you can find a route where you can avoid running directly into the wind for a long period of time (keep it to your back or your sides) that helps a lot, too!

Thanks for the responses! I actually ended up going to the gym after work because I remembered that I have a few errands to run before work tomorrow so it just made sense to get it done tonight... but on Saturday, I'll definitely be braving the yucky weather :).

I would try it. You can always fall back on your afternoon treadmill option. But if you don't try it, you won't know what your limits are.

I was supposed to do a 5-6 mile run tomorrow morning (I work from 12-8:30p so the morning is my only chance to run outside, otherwise it's the treadmill if I wait until after work). I'd prefer to run outside BUT the forecast is saying it'll be 15 degrees Farenheit with a "feel like" prediction of -8 degrees Farenheit (yes, NEGATIVE 8) due to 20+ mph winds. I'm not sure if I should run outside tomorrow morning OR split it up and do 3-4 miles on the treadmill tonight after work AND tomorrow (6 miles on the TM would not be enjoyed)... any thoughts?
