yeah... those M&M's sound good! I'm the same way though -- I can't have temptations in the house! ... Which, oddly enough is not to say that I can't have sweets in the house! I've found Chocolove Extra-Dark (77%) Chocolate Bars. they are so strongly chocolate that when I get a craving for a treat, one square packs such a punch that I don't want more. At that concentration, they are barely sweet -- but i get a lot of powerful flavor! And a small bag of SF butterscotch (a favorite flavor of mine) hard candies can last me over a year. Because without any sugar at all, these small candies absolutely don't trigger any cravings in me, but they are plenty sweet enough to make me feel indulged when I do have one. Hard candies just aren't decadent the way chocolate is, so they don't leave me wanting more More MORE!

And I can eat SF cheesecake. That's so good that even without sugar, I often want more than the sliver I allow myself. I wonder why I only allow myself a sliver? Carb-wise, I could usually allow myself twice the amount.... perhaps it is because the "limitation" works psychologically to increase the allure and preserve its status as a TREAT? Or am I a health nut who just thinks something so good can't possibly be healthy so consequently I must be careful not to over-indulge? ... just musing out loud....

Atkins M&M's sound like something I should avoid. I'm trying to get rid of my sweet cravings. At least if I don't have them I can't eat them.

Amy, I sure can relate to eating all the temptations in the house and making it safe! Koshie, I hope the knees are feeling good. Koshie, are you back into your yoga? I have opted for a lazy morning of drinking coffee!. It is my last day of vacation and I couldn't bear to go to the gym in our sub zero weather. I prefer the warm coziness of home today! I think I'll make some low carb dinners for the freezer! I purchased the Atkins M & M's-oh my, they are a little too good!!

Ugh...had a few pieces of candy left which I just ate with a cup of coffee...now the house is safe and free from any temptation lol. I tracked my calories and I am still at around 1500 with my dinner so I am ok with my unplanned treat. Normally I would just fall to pieces and give up for the rest of the day, not today I am just picking up and moving forward.

Amy, it is GREAT to realize your reason for losing weight and what an impact it will have DAILY. I want to lose weight for the same reason -- to make it easier to walk, and less painful on my knees.

Yup -- a NEW YEAR (and I wish you a HAPPY one!) to achieve our goals! Roughly 30 pounds for me too, Lori! You are looking good and healthy!

Sorry I wasn't as creative with my 5 golden rings lol. It was way too early in the morning for creativity...I was on my way to work.

I have gotten on the scale and it is scary, all my clothes are tight now, even my work scrubs. It is really crunch time for me. I cannot afford to get any bigger. My knees are hurting and my back. I am committing myself to starting over and reaching my goals this year. I am grateful for the opportunity to start over and do it right this year.

LOL! I love it, isn't that the truth. We had about a foot and a half of snow here up until Friday when it started to get warmer and rain. Nothing is left except a lot of water everywhere. Not sure if we will have a white Christmas now.

Have a great day!

Eating less is definitely progress. I think you should be proud of that especially this time of year. I am eating less carbs but need to work on eating smaller portions. I have avoided lots of cookies at work so that is a step in the right direction.

Lots to do so guess I best get moving. emoticon

it's hard not to compare the weather this year with last year's.... Not only is it in all actuality really colder; it is also more humid, and that makes it FEEL even colder.
Brrrrrrr!

I'm still struggling... one meal I'm doing well, the next meal is terrible... I pass up the pasta and then discover that I've got a piece of candy in my mouth! Arghhhh! And I really do want a pot of hot cocoa simmering 24/7 on the stove!

Thanks Koshie, I am trying to stay busy and not get caught up in the stress of the season. I vowed to focus on the spiritual aspect of the season this year and not put so much pressure on myself to do batches of cookies etc etc. No one needs several dozens of cookies-besides that is not what the season is about. I am not saying I will not indulge in any holiday treats but I am not going overboard this year. So far the scale is slightly under over the past week. Now to keep the momentum.

Your vacations sound wonderful. I am in need of a warm weather trip. It has been snowing like crazy here and keeps on snowing...Have a great day! emoticon

There was an article in the SP Health News that mentioned that allergies can be VERY specific -- you can be allergic to just the egg whites or yellows rather than the whole egg! By extension, I assume that you can be allergic to CHICKEN eggs but you might find that eggs of other species don't trigger an allergic reaction. I find quail eggs and duck eggs at Asian groceries. Quail eggs are 1/4 the size of chicken eggs and taste JUST the same. I didn't like duck eggs when I was a girl and haven't tried them again as an adult; but I understand that they have a richer flavor and are quite the gourmet item! Sneaky, I didn't remember that you were having digestive issues.... I took my daughter to an allergist when we were battling her problems and the visit was VERY helpful and saved us a lot of scary trial and error.

Hi, Amy! You are quite the trooper! I love your "Just DO it!" attitude! You are inspiring me to work harder right now too. We all have our battles.... I'm just coming off of a 3 week road trip visiting friends and family, followed up by Thanksgiving; followed up by an exotic 10-day family vacation; to be followed up by Xmas preparations and celebrations.... and I've put on quite a few pounds, too. So you are doing me a favor with your posts here! You know, none of us have an easy time of it until about a year after we've reached and maintained goal weight.... It is always about getting knocked back, picking yourself up and just keeping putting one foot in front of the other.... And having the courage and perseverance to do that is inspiring to me since that is my struggle right now too! It isn't always winning the big battles that makes the difference; but it definitely IS perseverance that wins the war!

Doing better, less carbs and more water. Not so great with exercise but I have been very busy with holiday preparations. Doing some batch cooking for the weekend as I will be working 12hr shifts Saturday and Sunday. Hoping for the scale to start working downward.

I will be going back on induction myself. I have been having lots of difficulty lately. I got frustrated by not losing any weight and went off plan and was just trying to count calories. Needless to say it is not working. I have gained at least 5 pounds and I need to stop this. I am sticking to my plan of not making cookies and falling into that trap. I need to recommit. I need to get back to basics. Simple meals, lots of water, and activity. Ugh...

It's true, I should be in phase 4 or something by now but I went down to induction restrictions because I am trying to figure out if I have other food intolerances. I got so excited about losing weight that I forgot that the other reason I started watching my diet was that I was having some digestive concerns. On Induction, I have had absolutely no problems (save for the eggs) and so I'm currently in induction until the 15th and then I'm going to slowly start adding things back one at a time and making a note of how I react to it. I did not do this when I started maintenance at 145 lbs.

I like your recipe - I'll try it later this month!

You are so close to goal, Sneaky! How awful to feel forced to give up eggs for 6 months! I SO hope you haven't developed an allergy! You know, you might consider contacting Becky Hand, the SP nutritionist. While I think she doesn't support the Atkins way of living, I do expect that she'd have lots of useful info that can help you with the egg problem.

Being so close to goal, you should be able to eat fruit at least occasionally. My breakfast ideas involve fruit and pork rinds. QUICKLY rinse pork rinds of excess salt. Crush or break pork rinds into smaller pieces, depending upon personal preference. Using milk, cream, sour cream, cream cheese, or a mixture of these things, add pork rinds and fruit. Aim for creating something like oatmeal in consistency that you can heat and eat, or for creating something like a cold cereal with milk.
Also, with SF jello, you can make congeals with mayo, nuts, and fruit. Recipes are easy to find -- and clearly you are good at living the LC lifestyle so I trust you are skilled at making appropriate substitutions! I love having breakfast (and dessert!) congeals in my fridge -- my favorite jello flavors to use are lime and strawberry!

All my eggs and dairy is organic and I have been cooking them in a variety of ways: omelettes, basted, over easy, poached, boiled - all anywhere from soft to rather well done. I love eggs in all their forms so it just depended on my mood. I am 100% sure it's eggs as I tried a few times and nothing else makes my stomach react that way. So my plan is to stay off them (even as an ingredient) for about six months and then try them (whites alone and then yolks alone). If they still bother me, I'll get tested for allergies.

As much as I love them, I'm not missing them too badly at breakfast yet. I'm having plain yogurt with a bit of protein powder and flax meal (since MIMs are out and I have the flax) or cheese and veggies or leftovers from the night before. I can eat supper for breakfast no problem. Even cold. I'm open to other breakfast suggestions. Bacon and cottage cheese sounds good.

I'm just relieved not to have anything make me so sick anymore.

Got back last night -- or very early this morning to be accurate! ..still on island time. Glad to hear from you two! Those are great goals ,Amy!
No, I've never heard of your problem, Sneaky. How have you been fixing your eggs? THoroughly cooked? The same way? Did you try a new way? new brand? It occurs to me that you MIGHT be VERY HEALTHY but might have been eating eggs contaminated with salmonella. After a time, such might have simply gotten to be too much for your immune system, and it needs a break. After awhile, see if eating a bite of freshly-cooked hard-boiled egg upsets your stomach. If it's okay, eat a bite more.... still okay? Then I doubt you have egg allergies. If upset again, see your doctor or allergist -- allergies can be serious and eggs are a common food ingredient!
I'm thinking that a hard-cooked egg will kill all salmonella for sure and might give you the info you need. Then you can try different cooking methods with other breakfast eggs.... shrug. Sorry -- I'm no expert! Does your stomach hurt with other proteins?

Maybe it's a food allergy?

Way to go on your weight loss! What are you doing for breakfast now? I like cottage cheese or a few slices of bacon.

This month my goal is to stay away from all the cookies and sweets. I am not baking this year so this should be pretty easy for me.

Have a great weekend,
Amy

Hi all. I haven't checked in for quite a while as I have been focussing on other things. I have been maintaining my weight loss with very little difficulty by keeping Atkins principles on my mind and being cautious. I'm pleased.

Here's something that has developed that I have never heard of from anyone else. Does it sound familiar to any of you? I love eggs. From the time I started Atkins in June until about a month ago, I have probably had eggs for breakfast every single day. I never tire of them.

A few weeks back, I started noticing that I get very sick to my stomach (not intestines) after breakfast. I really feel like I am going to vomit. I have narrowed it down to EGGS. I cannot eat them anymore. I am a bit heartbroken. Has anyone else heard of this?

Yogurt for me in the mornings now ...

Not knowing what everyone was bringing to the party, I was amazingly prescient -- I ate turkey, green beans, strawberries and real whipped cream! ...and some other stuff....... But I filled up (oh, too much!) early on Low-Carb food. I refuse to weigh myself this morning -- but overall, I think I did pretty well for the day. Progress is made in LITTLE STEPS -- and I made a little step forward yesterday! So I'm pleased with myself.

I am leaving today to go on vacation for a week.

I do that all the TIME! I HATE it when that happens!

lol -- I like the part about no stepping on the scale for a few days! On the other hand, a good scare can really motivate me!

Here's to turkey and green beans tomorrow -- with real whipped cream and strawberries for dessert!

Hi

I lost a whole motivational speech for you. Hit the wrong button and erased.

All I can say while on vacation is just be aware of what you are eating. Have that slice of bread .. Leave half on plate. No seconds. Savor each bite.

When you get home, no stepping on scale for at least 4 or 5 days. Get back in control of food choices.

I've been good with the WOE (way of eating)....
....am now preparing to leave for St. John's, VI on Friday. So if any of you have any advice about staying in control while on vacation, let's have it now, please!

Hi Amy! Hi Linda!
Well... it has taken me 3 days so far to recover from driving home. I've lost 3.5 pounds of water weight -- so I'm now concluding that I gained 4 pounds of fat over the 2 weeks. Well, actually one week, as it was only the last week of my trip that I lost control of my eating. I've been working hard here at home to get back into my groove and eat right. I'm succeeding and starting to feel better!

That's a lot of goals to start with, Amy. That puts a lot of pressure on you. Do not feel bad about backing off a bit if needed. Once some new behaviors become habit, you will find it easier and more successful to add any dropped ones back in later.

Linda, forgive me? emoticon Geemanee! It is HARD to not eat freely on vacation! REALLY hard! Here I've had lots of ideas for you, but I couldn't carry out my plan my own self! I brought my cheesecake with me; I brought pork rinds and tea and nuts and beef jerky..... And I ate all those things, but eventually, I started eating other things too! Things I shouldn't have! emoticon
I told my uncle and aunt that I WAS being a bit "looser" with my diet (and I was, just a bit) when I turned down repeated carbs (waffles! I love waffles!)... but the dribble of things turned into a flood later! It is SO much easier to stay in control at home!

You know what I think it is? Hidden carbs! AT home, you know practically EXACTLY what you are buying and eating. Eating on the road, eating out, you don't know! You can order a salad and pick off all the croutons, but then you realize that you don't know how many carbs are in the ranch dressing. At home, you know because you buy the one with only 1 carb per tablespoon, but does the RESTAURANT use that brand? And your ordered your steak without the BBQ sauce, but did they use sugar or maltitol on your steak when they marinated/rubbed it?
And that summer squash in the mixed vegetable side? Sure, you think it is zucchini, but it might be Mexican/grey squash! I've recently learned that though they look/smell/taste very alike, but the grey squash has quite a few more carbs in it than zucchini!
So you THINK you are allowing yourself just a few more carbs a day.... but you getting a lot more than you realize!

That's my new theory! Sound plausible? There MUST be a way to succeed without overdoing it on vacation! Short of eating hard-boiled eggs out of the shell exclusively, please! What are the tactics that you've used so far, Linda? Even the ones that've failed will help me learn! Maybe we can keep brainstorming on this topic and come up with something that might help us succeed!

emoticon Yesterday, I took the day OFF. Seriously OFF. I haven't unpacked, I haven't even taken my things out of my car! Thank God for enclosed garages! I merely rested and relaxed. Hmm... does this mean I am getting older and finally acting my age? and I finally SLEPT. I slept for 10 hours last night. I needed it.
And I feel good this morning! Thank goodness, because now I have to unload the car, unpack, do the laundry, water my plants, spend more time with my pet bird (who clearly missed me!), etc.....

Oh, that was nice! Ginger made such a fuss when she heard my voice! ---calling me, saying everything she knows how to say, preening, displaying, climbing all over her cage trying to find the closest spot to me.... If I'd taught her to do back-flips, I'll bet she'd have done back-flips! Now, with parrots, you have to be careful. They are also quite liable to suddenly realize that they are irritated that you were GONE and then they'll bite without warning, so I didn't want to take her out.... Instead I sat by her cage and talked to her and scratched her head and feet as she clung to the bars closest to me, and took the risk of kissing her beak, and fed her treats through the bars... it was enough for both of us. This morning, she is calmer and I'll take her out to play....

Finally back. Piggy me. What a hypocrite I am! Well... sigh, maybe not hypocrite, but a Miss-Know-It-All? Ugh! It is so EASY to know the answers and quite a different story to LIVE the life! Or put another way, it is easy to talk the walk, but hard to walk the talk!
Oy!
very late. More after I get some sleep!

Hi,

I agree with willing to change life-style. Just because going on vacation doesn't have the right to be a pig and eat everything in sight.

It's making the right choices !! Nobody really cares what's on your plate. If passing on the bread, potato, rice, etc., nobody notices !!

WE CAN DO THIS !!! ONE DAY AT A TIME !!!

Koshie have a safe trip. I read your post from a few days ago about people want to lose weight but they are not willing to change or do the things they need to in order to bring about weightloss. I have been struggling with 20 pounds which now has become 30 pounds for about 6yrs now. Like many people I used to have an easy time losing weight and now it doesn't happen short of an official decree. I am finally getting it. In order to lose weight I have to stop doing the things that have got me here. I need to change.

This week I joined a November Challenge on another team. My challenge includes keeping carbs at or below 50, at least 2 liters of water, exercise 5 days a week, calories at or below 1500, weigh myself once a day. I am a pathologic daily weigher and that has been my toughest challenge yet. I am afraid I will miss my weight loss. I am trying to change because I am tired of looking like I do.

Amy emoticon
