Please read GRINGUITA's introduction of herself below (November 9) before reading the rest of this post here!

- - - -
It hasn't happened before, but we are now "chunking" the discussion up into more manegable pieces. Please continue under this new topic:
KETO CHAT - Nov 2016

The chats will start with "KETO CHAT - " and then a date range. Every month or two we will be starting a new chat, and we will post a request to stop on a discussion and continue on the next one. The goal is to make searching for older posts more manegable. Like if someone posts some Keto holiday treats, next year you can look under "KETO CHAT - Dec 2016" and find it.

Thanks to Bev Anne (GRINGUITA) for bringing this idea forward. Other teams do this sort of thing too.

Did I mention that I'm a slow reader and don't know how to read words that I don't know. I was not taught how to sound them out, use a dictionary etc. However, I did understand what the book is talking about soooooooo I tried to eat Keto today. I'm SHOCKED that I'm not hungry at all. I "WAS" a total bread person, 4 bagels was a usual breakfast. It is surprising that I had no desire for any bread product today. Also staying under 50 carbs is totally do-able - amazing! I've got a longggggg way to go but off to a good start.

It has been tough to take the TIME to read & learn, I'm very busy right now. However, after hearing from James, I decided that I make time for whatever I want to - so I found the time to do it. Time worth spending!

Have a good evening, T emoticon

T-GOAL-LOSE-167,
As I read your last post I was already thinking what GRINGUITA already wrote. Read the book, and ask questions, we'll do our best to answer. There are so many old posts to sift through, and we are happy to answer.

James has asked me to be part of the leadership of this team so I thought I should tell you a bit about myself. But first let me say that we are all different and we all have to find what works for us. I think that genetics plays a big role in our health as well as our history.

So about me -- I have struggled with weight all my life starting with pre-puberty. School pictures from that time show that I was definitely fat and I remember that I was the heaviest girl in the class in grade 7. Around that time I was put on my first diet which was completely unsustainable and made me hungrier than I had ever been before. Later in my 20's I was able to get down to my goal weight on weight watchers which was a completely different program than it is today and was relatively lowcarb. But that goal weight of 130 lbs only lasted a few days and I gained back about 10 lbs and struggled around that weight for a few years but eventually gained back all of the 100 lbs I had lost and more. I yo-yoed for years and finally hit a high of around 340 in the mid nineties when I was in my 50s. I am only 5'3" so at that point I was literally Mrs 5x5 -- around 5 feet tall and around 5 feet in circumference. At this weight I was at the point where certain activities were getting difficult to do and I panicked. During the next 10 years I lost a bit of weight but mainly stayed above 300. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2004 and put on meds which were increased until I was taking insulin 3x a day, Byetta a couple of times a day and also Metformin. I struggled to get below 300 and finally broke that barrier sometime around 2010 and I was making some progress at that time on a LCLF diet and I did manage to get off ALL those meds. Then I decided to be a vegetarian because of a TV show on PBS that said that I could improve my diabetes that way. That didn't work for me and I gained back almost 40 lbs of hard earned weight loss. This is when I learned that carbs are not my friend even if they are healthy looking veggies.

At this point I went back to a LC diet but this time I added more fat. Then I learned about Fasting so I was able to get both my weight and my Blood Sugar down and things were really looking good. I temporarily dipped below 250 and my A1c was down to 5.7. Then came a lot of stress in my life -- we moved. This was a lengthy process from the time we decided to do it until we actually got moved last June and my weight and A1c were creeping up again. I found a new doctor who is definitely in favour of LCHF and Intermittent Fasting up to about 24 hours but he didn't think I should fast any longer than that so although I slowed down the weight gain I couldn't get down below 250 again -- in fact I was breaking upward through 270 on an upswing when I decided that I really need to fast longer than 24 hours.

So last week I decided to go on a three day fast which ended up being nearly 6 days and I am back on a downward trend again. The weight is coming off and the blood sugar is coming down. I don't need to go and see my doctor until late spring so I am hoping to be able to show him that fasting works for me, makes me feel better and has no detrimental effects on my body.

Meanwhile although I thought I was eating a ketogenic diet I found that I wasn't. I got myself a blood ketone monitor and started to measure my blood ketones once a week and get really serious about eating ketogenically between fasts.

So this is where I am at now. I think this is what will work for me but I know my way of eating is not for everyone. My main goal is to heal my insulin resistance and lower my A1c and this seems to be the best way to do it.

This SparkTeam is about using the ketogenic diet to improve health -- weight loss is a wonderful side effect. As far as I'm concerned this is a place to learn about ketosis -- if you find this works for you that's great but if you just want to hang out to see how others are doing on this lifestyle then that's great too.

If you have any questions about me or the ketogenic diet I will be happy to answer them or direct you to someone who can. The main thing is to remember that we are all different and if you find this isn't for you -- don't beat yourself up -- just keep looking for the plan that is right for you.

Erin,
there are two kinds of pepperoni sticks in my local grocery store. I thought there was just one type, until one day when I got my package home and bit into the first one I thought, this tastes different, this tastes a bit sweet.

On looking at the label, I think it was more than 6% carbs, added sugar. I thought, this is meat, a sausage sort of thing, and they added sugar to it. This is crazy!

I still buy pepperoni, but I'm super careful about reading nutrition labels and getting the "right" one.

MOMTOMONKEYS2,

I had a sore throat a few weeks ago. Took half a glass of warm water, dissolved as much salt as I could get into it, and still not instinctively spit it out, and gargled with it.

No throat lozenges, no Listerine, just salt. Bacteria hate a salty environment. If it is viral,... I don't know. But it is worth a try.

Hello all

I am suffering a horrible sore throat. I just wanted soup. I went to the bakery and go cheddar broccoli. I'm going to hope its lower carb than it probably is. But hey, maybe I'll be lucky and its actually made with cream? Mostly sticking to drinking hot water. I'm going to cave and take some Tylenol and see if it helps and if not when I leave to pick up kids from school I will not come back to work.

I'm relatively on plan. Hope to stay that way!

Debbie hope you are better soon. Ouch emoticon

Congratulations Bev Anne, you will be a great leader.

Turkey, we had one about two weeks ago. Love making bone broth from the left overs and the carcass. Now you are all making me hungry for it again. But will probable hold off until our Thanksgiving here in the US.

Yes James, it seems processed food can be a real issue. I see on the internet a lot of people doing Keto and puzzled why they can't lose, and they post pictures of a lot of carbage. It seems many processed meats carry a lot. Bacon, sugars, jerky sugar, some luncheon meats have even wheat and other grains added.
Hidden carbs in restaurants can be really bad as well. Many omelets and scrambled eggs they will add flour to the egg mixture. Many fast food places have added milled grains in their burgers too. Chicken breast is common for being injected with a sugar and salt brine. A well as other poultry.

I too have a butcher and boy is that nice.

Getting ready to head south again soon, bittersweet as always.
I can not complain as the weather here in northern Minnesota has been exceptional this year. I will miss our cottage/cabin and most of all family. Thank goodness we SKYPE often.
What would we ever do without our modern day technology? EEKS I do not want to find out.

Have an amazing day all and congrats Bev Anne, you will make a great team leader with James. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Good morning all,

For sausages, brotworst, jersey, I found my local butcher has all of these fresh. I can ask him for the specifics that go into his product and he has provided me with the ingredients. Have tried some new things thanks to him.

Making turkey breast in the crockpot today. Yumm!

Have a healthy day,

Erin, I wasn't thinking of processed meats like luncheon meats and sausages. I was thinking of the real cuts of meat.

Yes, I've seen pepperoni sticks with loads of sugar added to it. You are right, if it has a label, read it.

Quick note, meat that has carbs; injected, luncheon and processed can have a load of carbs. Read the labels, please.
Whole foods are the best choices.
Greens/ Green vegetables too, are so good and help sustainability.

T-GOAL-LOSE-167,

All carbohydrates will raise blood sugar. High blood sugar is not good, so your body has insulin to rescue you from high blood sugar. Insulin protects you from that by getting blood sugar out of the blood and into cells. Both lean and fat cells.

In this mode your fat cells are in storage mode. Your body doesn't switch modes very quickly. when you get hungry a few hours later only carbs will satisfy the hunger. Carbs satisfy the hunger, but also some of them get stored.

Have you ever eaten, and 3 hours later found yourself hungry and said to yourself this is crazy, I just ate that big meal?

So Keto breaks that storage cycle, by cutting carbs way down, getting the lion's share of your calories from fat and protein.

Yes fat and protein, but I eat plenty of vegetables. Last night's supper was a big salad (lettuce, mushrooms, zucchini ... and chicken and ranch dressing.

T-GOAL-LOSE-167,

I don't know of a meat that isn't Keto. Zero carbohydrates in meat. Of course sweet glazing, or breaded coatings on meat are not a way to "finish them". If anything, I put oil and herbs (maybe just salt and pepper) on them.

If you read my earlier posts you will see that I have a rating for foods. I analyse them by what fraction, or percentage of their weight is carbohydrates. My caveman, simple minded idea is if the percentage of their weight is small, then it is hard to consume too many carbs, because you have to eat a lot of it for the carbs to add up.

So I eat things up to about 6% (of their weight). Near 6 I get a little more careful about quantity, but not that I necessarily weigh the portion, but I take a smaller portion. Above 6 and I get more stingy.

So:
Meat (0%)
Bread (50%)
Sugar (100%)

Except for the occasional bite, not even a mouthful, once every few months, I never eat bread, and even then it is a small bite out of curiosity, and it us always a disappointment. I don't know why I do it. Sugar added to anything, well that is never.

emoticon thats great your BS are were you want them... I was so happy to get mine down too - so know it well ...
so far keto has been easy for me - once I learned what to do .. and understand this macro thing - I track food & such - so before I eat dinner I check my nutrition numbers and see what I can have / need .. like more fat - so I will have a little and fat bomb treat later - more protein so up that part etc...
bs have not plunged to hypo lately - so maybe body is finally adjusting to being low as 80s ..
thursday is the spinning (fibers ) group at the library and they always bring a ton of sweets - go after the gym- so need to take snack before .. wish they would bring cheese stuff LOL.. I can't afford to , but most of them can LOL

James, this time I have been using homemade bone broth. I use bones of turkey, chicken or pork -- whatever they have in the grocery store, onion, 2 Tbs vegesal (sea salt and veggies) and a heavy dose of Apple Cider Vinegar (much more than the recommended 2Tbs). I have 2 or 3 large cups (12 oz) a day. I also use distilled water, hibiscus tea and flavoured sparkling water.

I started out to do a 3 day fast but I felt so good I just kept going -- I'm not sure when I will end it -- it depends on how I feel -- right now I feel great.

Bev Anne (GRINGUITA),

I'm curious, on your fast what do you take in? Water? What else?

Good Morning Everyone. I am like James; here to help never scold, here to support never criticize.

My personal experience is, go all guns and after you have achieved ketones and developed a ketogenic state then you can play with carbs, after adapting.
When I played with carbs and using net, not total it became my cheaters game. I was busy playing low carb queen with manipulating the carbs. I actually was putting off the grim truth...my issue with food and diets.
Many of us that have been obese/sick, have some hard issues looking at feeling deprived, sad that we have to diet, give up certain foods and baby ourselves when trying to face the truth. My hand is raised the highest on this issue. Remember this is my sharing about my experience, this may help you and it may not have anything to do with you.
I had to get honest with me, did I truly want to do Keto and all it involves?
Then of course I went looking for a Keto plan that would enable me and my issues. One where some one tells you what we want to hear, or shows us ways of cheating bending or manipulating carbs to pretend we are doing Keto. These sites are out there and more than not.
I found when I used net carbs, I failed and did not commit to this WOE. to get into Ketosis. I was doing nothing right and was not getting the true benefit of what ketosis does. I was being enabled and I was the biggest enabler of all. I was playing once again with another diet.
It took me a long time to learn enough and trust enough(me included) in the process to do enough and that meant, being honest with myself. THE HARDEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE!! Game over and I had to get real.
Believe it or not getting into ketosis actually helped me discover, I could do this, and do it correctly.
When I did, I actually learned, dwelled and became obsessed with Keto. Thisis when I started knowing it enough to know, how to work the numbers, not cheat the numbers.
Low and behold months later boom 100 pounds gone.
It takes commitment and work first, studying it, figuring out exactly what the science is and then implementing it as your WOE. Yes I had issues and I even cried several times feeling sorry for me and went back often to my own pity party...poor fat woman. I caught myself and made sure these moments became less and less and would shake myself out of them. Usually by getting involved more. Reading, surfing the web and most of all here.
I wanted to once and for all own something, one darn diet plan, just once see something through.
It is not easy and no one can do the work for you, but we are here! Here to help you, not carry you, here to clarify, not read it for you, here to give suggestions and support. But it does come down to you.
YOU are so worth all your efforts, all your fighting to be that thinner winner, the healthier happier YOU! You have it in you, to do this and when you do, you will have reaped the benefits, achieved something once and for all and you will find such rewards, personally and physically.
No one is perfect and no one does it all right, but you can come back 100 times if you need to and start over. But you do not have to stay down, stay defeated or walk away. We all have battled this, we all have fallen and failed. The difference is, we are here now and working together to get better and to do better.
This team has lost a lot of weight, achieved a great deal of self discovery and as well has placed on these threads a ton of information from professionals, gurus and ourselves. Here is everything you will need to help you in this journey. Buy the book, own that book, make it your best friend and discover for yourself this wonderful tool of Ketosis and use it to achieve what you want from it.
Most of all enjoy your journey and please know, you are so worth all your own efforts too.

Walk through your journey with a loving open heart and as well mind. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Laugh, if at nothing else yourself.

I made almond muffins in a minute this morning with big pats of Kerrygold butter on them. Higher kcal day for me! The kids got some diced apples and cinnamon in theirs. Mine without the apple is 5 net carbs and I am stuffed! Tuna salad with celery for lunch and on the fence about dinner. Chicken legs and cheesy broccoli maybe since I'm home to cook today!
My net carbs yesterday were under 30 but not 20 as I hoped- its the dark chocolate! Gotta get that checked next. Baby steps here.

If you are shooting for 50 carbs then count total. If net, approx. 30 or less.

Carb counts ideally under 20, maybe a newbie like me - strive for under 50. Is that correct? Is the carb count net carbs?

DAY 1 : Back to 20 g/day

Well today I'm back to counting and tracking and keeping my carb grams down below 20g/day. My recent indulgence in copious amounts of white sugar has caused a increase in my Candida symptoms so I also restarted my Candidastat and my probiotic. Candida die off symptoms suck. Muscle aches of a horrendous nature. Last time I had to soak in Epsom salts which did help so I'll be due to soak tomorrow morning if not tonight. I am trying hard to drink a lot of water to flush my system. The thing about Candida is that they love sugar and they make you crave what they love. Some serious gut/brain talking goes on.

Earnie,

Well, down 3 pounds in a week. You are definitely doing things right. It can't all be fat because the even if the number of calories burned by you in a day was around 1800, and you took in zero calories, then at 3500 calories per pound of body fat, that would be darn near 3.5 pounds of fat loss for a week.

So, since you are eating, and I don't know your calories, I have to assume that 3 pounds is a mixture of both fat and water (glycogen ). This should mean your carbs are low enough, and you are on a good path.

The 5 days you sent me averaged your calorie sources out to something like this:
Fat (70% of the calories)
Carbs (9%)
Protein (21%)

I can see from that, that you are easing up a bit on the fat, and you are having issues with the higher fat in Keto, so do what works for you (N=1). I don't know what your actual grams of carbs is, or your total calories. However, in any case it looks like you are finding your path.

I hope that was a pleasant week with pleasant food (digestively speaking).

3 pounds is good, a healthy loss and as well if you were doing a low carb diet before this, that is a great number. I reviewed your numbers and left you a message hope it helps. I think you are doing very good. Tracking helps a lot especially when trying to get your footing on Keto.
Keep doing what you are doing for a couple of weeks and then let's see the numbers again. But if al is well and working just do it. If you are heading in the wrong direction we will review it again. Our body needs to adjust nd readjust as we change things nd as well as we drop weight.
We are here to help. Just Keep on with what you are doing it is a great start.
If you would like share your macro percentage here on the team we have place where many have shared their macros and the help is as well amazing.
It is listed with in this area of sharing....scroll below this thread and you will see it.
Got to run!!

No, I'm only down 3 lbs since I started last Monday. I had already dropped the other lbs. I didn't update my tracker. But I'll take the 3 lbs.

Earnie,

The link you mailed me was file://.... which is a "resource locator" for a file on your computer, and only works when clicked on your computer.

I used to do a lot of "strange" things in software when I worked for IBM. So I tried to "ADD AN IMAGE" that was really a file, a word document, but it didn't work as the file was not an image. But with a little imagination ...

If you edit your file, and "Save as ..." you might be able to save it as an image, a JPEG or something, if so, then you can click the "ADD AN IMAGE" button at the top of your message box, and select that file (images only, but it is an image now), and when done post your message.

Good luck.

P.S. If you've lost 9.2 pounds since starting to eat Keto, then you are on track. Yes about 5 of that is probably water (lost with glycogen, a short term carb reserve) but the other 4 or so are then fat. The main thing is to feel good, be healthy, and have enough energy, weight loss is just a possible side effect.

Earnie, I have to admit I am a protein hound. I do believe as we age we should be on the higher end of the charts. Example. a person's lean body mass should be say 120 pounds and they are targeting .8 gram per pound that gives you 96 gram of protein.
I truly have done pretty good at this level, but never worried if I ran over a bit.
Carbs are the key, get low and consistently and you will get into Ketosis.
Fats in that over 65% worked for me. But as well I would go over a lot as well. I even had days where I would eat 80+% of my calories in fat. That was just to see what it was like and as well to help check my appetite. It will do that easily. As well if at first the BM's are hard, add more fat and there will be no issues(I KNOW TMI). But true.
Once in Ketosis you can play a little bit more with numbers finding your so called sweet spot. It can be a game of numbers to get to know how you react, how you feel and where you do your best. It can take some work.
I will look forward to seeing some of your numbers.
How do you feel?
Are you losing any weight, inches?
Conversations and ideas always help. If one thing does not work, maybe another will. We all are a bit different and many of us here have experienced these differences. It is all good.

Earnie (MAUITN),

Like Erin, I too am curious about your daily grams of carbs, fat and protein.

If you are eating unprocessed food it is pretty hard to eat too much protein. I consider whey protein to be processed, but I use the whey protein powder to make waffles. If I ate a lot of waffles, or drank that powder as a vanilla shake, the way it was intended, then I could easily get too much protein. But if the protein source is meat, or unprocessed plant material, it takes a lot of food.

For example, chicken breast meat is a high protein source. Around 30% of its weight is protein. So if you ate both chicken breasts that would be around 350 grams of meat, and around 105 grams of protein.

Erin, thanks. I will go back and pull some figures from this last week to share. I know I'm still getting too much protein and need to plan my meals better. And, yes, this has been a drastic increase in fat suddenly. I will give it time and perhaps be a bit more moderate. But not until I share some info. May get that done later today.

Mauitn, I had some uncomfortableness when increasing my fats, it eventually passed.
You can bring your fat consumption down a bit and see if it helps. Are you testing Ketones and are you tracking your macros?
If you want to share these numbers we can see a bit more of your story and can give better help.

Good Sunday Morning,

Bev, I sort of thought that would be your answer, it seems you do well and like what you are doing. Keeps you healthy so why change. Good for you. It imprints so deeply that it becomes ones way of life.

Peg, that is the recipe I use as well. A good one.

SpiritSeeker, good for you. To switch over to temptation is such a great thing!! Yes, I so agree the brain and change is so very powerful.

M2M, Balance.

I started this Keto journey being a plant based person. The challenge and change to Keto was a terribly hard one for me. Probably why I struggled so long at first transitioning from LC as well. The big thing I have learned is the carbage is terrible and will always be out of my diet. Processed food to me is death and I react accordingly.
Clean is and will always be my choices. Then density of nutrition and I follow the path down that list. I am transitioning back to my plant based roots. But finding that balance, slowly as I have to make sure each step is established and grounded deep within me. Plant based fats first. This actually has not been to hard. Plant based fats seem to work in my body well.
Really have pumped up the greens and vegetables. Nice slow steady steps. More fish than meat, high quality has been key for me. It seems like I am doing everything in slow motion. all steps, taking my time with food, in buying, in prepping and as well in consuming. I have been studying Keto vegans and as well Keto vegetarians. Meat has been difficult for me to eat lately and as well really upsets my whole system. So I am looking into a lot of plant based proteins.
It truly is a journey. I may never land any where and just continue to work within how my body acts and reacts. I do know this, we all need fat and do not and should not ever have sugar. I as well believe ALL processed wheat most of not all ( yes there are very few exceptions, very few) processed sugar foods kill, slowly but still kill. I remember back awhile on a LC team, I mentioned that I had to stay clear of fruit and got jumped by a team leader shaming me for thinking that way. Really....some people do react and I did a lot at that time, I also weighed 200 pounds and my body was sick and did react. I was so confused as I believe many of us have gone through these frustrations.
So does this make me a lower carber, I am not sure about this. Who actually decides this; a chart, some guru, some book? I think we decide what we do and do not need a label, a cute or a catch phrase to identify what we do and who we are.
Keto will always be in my head and it's key teachings. Sound science. But as well there is sound science on nutrient dense food values in the micro world of foods. The benefits are so obvious. Yes we can live without carbs, but how is the quality of that life and as well the longevity? I truly do believe so many vegetables and yes fruits(tomatoes, peppers, zucchini....) benefit us. I think many in the Keto world vilify these highly nutritious foods that benefit us.
Balance. I truly believe we can do this and still be Keto, low carb, lower carb, and healthy.
I will eventually land doing my own thing, balanced, but smart as well.
Currently I am doing green juices and green smoothies, big salads, nuts, seeds and healthy plant based fats (avocadoes, coconut products, EVOO, flax, chia and hemp). No processed except for pure organic tempeh and tofu, some small cold water fish and eggs(all kinds, but locally farm raised). I do test well with BS and as well urinate trace and small on the strips. Last Keto blood test I was a .4. That was two weeks ago.
I feel amazing. My weight loss is stable.
Maybe I am a N=1 person as I am constantly seeking and looking for my optimal health.

Do what makes you healthy and as well happy.

Erin- I think my ideal diet would be predominantly low carb long term. I'd like to eat a little more fruit. I'd like to find balance with low carb baking for special events but not daily occurrences. Id like to enjoy red wine and dark chocolate as sensible indulgences. But what I realize is that if I eat the wrong things I binge and that is white sugar/flour products that I will always need to avoid.

James- pancake was a recipe from the Keto Facebook group. Almond flour, eggs, cream cheese, vanilla extract, baking powder (optional) and sweetener. Pretty tasty. I also have a recipe that uses coconut flour that I haven't tried- yet.

Have a healthy day, make good choices.

When I was working very hard to get into Keto I avoided all fruits and berries. All. I stuck with the plans strictest guidelines never eating over total carbs of less than 20. When I did I found Keto and weight loss, when I didn't I had to check myself and get real. Adding in extras at first for me was a no, no. But others do well with more freedom, I did not. I am all or nothing. I had to, to develop the discipline I needed to lose and stay true to the Keto plan.
One or two berries would end up being full pint.

This brings me to the question I asked the team awhile back; if and when you lose your weight what plan would you want to have for a lifestyle?
Would you use Keto as your go to diet plan if you regained weight?
What would be your dream diet?

These are questions I often pondered on and changed my mind many times along the way.

MAUITN,
well as I look it up, blueberries have about 12% of their weight as carbs. So about twice as high as raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries.

But I don't have these fruits very often (once every two weeks or so) and when I do it is in small quantities, and they are on the edge of my eating horizon. So all in all, you are right to avoid or seriously limit them until being further into Keto.

Blackberries, raspberries and blueberries are my favorites (peaches in the Summer), but I'm going to have to limit them until I get further along with this plan.

Good morning!

Made pancakes this morning. Oh, I am so happy. 2 pancakes, 2 slices of bacon and coffee.
Yummy! Was getting a little tired of my usual meal and watching my hubby eat waffles..... Well, I need to find something to satisfy and still stay on track.

Working on it, felling good.

Have a good one.

The only fruits that make my cut at all are blueberries which I have a 1/2 cup of a couple of times during the summer when they are fresh. The other berries I may have one or two of if they are served as an appetizer or an a buffet somewhere but I don't go out of my way to buy them.

Subject: Fruit?

You might wonder if any kind of fruit fits in with eating Keto. First of all the main thing is to not eat too many grams of carbs in a day. So if you count carbs you can weigh that little bit of banana, calculate your carbs, and build it into your plan.

These days I don't weigh very often, but I have a 6% guideline. If something, fruit or otherwise, has 6% (or less) of its weight as carbs then I eat it and don't think much about it. Of course the closer it is to 6%, or even maybe a little bit above, then the more I am conciously taking smaller portion sizes.

So for fruits, what makes my personal cut:
- strawberries (5.7%)
- raspberries (5.4%)
- blackberries (4.9%)

Fruits that don't make my cut:
- bananas (20.2%)
- pineapple (11.7%)
- apples (11.4%)
- etc.

Even so, all of the fruits that do make my cut are so close to 6% that I don't eat BIG bowlfuls. If I did have some banana, then it would take some care. An average banana has about 30 grams of carbs, so I'd have to cut and weigh and calculate. It would end up being about 1/3 or 1/4 of a banana. ... Frankly, I choose not to eat bananas.

My goal is to learn how to plan meals that are closer to appropriate macros, that add fat without getting too much protein.
