Ah I enjoy reading more than watching tv anyway!! To me tv is social - I do it with my husband. Now that he is in Hawaii, I'll be doing much more reading.

That is the best way to unpack Bev Anne - just a box at a time. My sister still has boxes in her house that she hasn't unpacked - after almost a year and a half. I would not like to go that long myself.

Here is a good pic of the whole fish haul - it was my brother's bachelor trip and since my husband couldn't come... I got to go!! So happy about that.

I have a discombobulated house too. Still more boxes to unpack but I'm not in a rush -- we have everything we need to function. There will be a couple more weeks without TV though so I am getting lots of reading done!

That was a rockfish Bev Anne - and it is supposed to be really delicious meat. I brought 44 pounds of fresh fish home with me vacuum sealed and frozen, and will have food for a long time!

Truly it was SO MUCH FUN!!

Now I am back to an empty house that is all discombobulated. Lots of organizing and cleaning to do. A little at a time.

Welcome back! It looks like you had a great time. What kind of fish was that? I will be ready to rock it soon. We should be pretty much settled by the end of the month. We still don't have our TVs mounted so I have been doing a lot of reading.

I'm back and ready to rock it!!

Here is one of the fish I caught when I was in Alaska.

A lot of people in my family circle are doing keto up there. Either keto or nothing at all. Very good successes. I saw pictures from a year ago and WOW!! So happy to have had this vacation!

Today I ate some of the same stuff...a few blackberries, a little cheddar cheese, a few Atkins shakes...and added an avocado. Went a little high on carbs...68.

At this rate, I will not be in ketosis...need to get some sticks and test every day!

My total carbs yesterday were 53. I ate healthy, if not Keto. Blackberries, bell pepper, hummus, snow peas, proschiuto. FBS this morning 78. Love that FBS.

I don't really do snacks but one of my meals is usually nuts -- macadamias, pecans, or Brazil nuts.

Bev Anne, I hope it continues to work.

I found a new great snack. Pistachios. I bought the little 1 oz bags with pistachios in the shell.

As long as I don't get too hungry maybe I can stay with it.

What do you all do for snacks?

Good to see so many responses. Yep, I had better go to store and buy some supplements.

As for Atkins, I can't have the bars, they have sugar alcohol, and shoot my BS up. I do like the shakes for breakfast though.

Yes Linda, you will not be disappointed if you order from Sunnyland Farms...the very best pecan growers in the country.

I should buy the urine strips to test. However, my total carbs (not net) are running about 50 or so average. So I may not be in ketosis. I can't seem to get it down to 20.

Glad to see you all here...

Hey BevAnne,

I posted this in INTRODUCTIONS but wanted to say HI here also.

I've been a member of this team a long time but not active. I've been on Spark BL Teams for years. It keeps me active but I've not kept off any weight I lost. Keto is my go to program but I fall off when that devil SWEETS comes knocking at my door.

Im ready to lose and KEEP OFF the next 40 lbs. It's been 2 years since I lost the first 40 with a clinic, shots, etc.

I'm going to check out diet doctor. I hear great things about that site.

I have strips to check for ketosis. They do help. I love the Atkins bars but they block my weight loss. I like the dark chocolate shakes but they are not filling me up for long. I don't think I will buy them again. I'm going to check out Sunnyland for pecans. I love pecans.

Jan, also I was reading back through your posts and see one day you mentioned having 2 Atkins shakes. I used the bars when I first started and they caused me trouble losing weight. I saw better success when I cut them out. You might try that and see if it helps you too!

Magnesium Malate is gentle on your tummy. When I started taking it 2x a day my foot and leg cramps went away. I also do a pinch of real salt and a pinch of lite salt for sodium and potassium in my water... don’t forget hydration!

Are you taking a magnesium supplement? Most people are deficient in magnesium and that can cause muscle cramping.

Last several nights I've woke from sharp cramps in toes, feet and legs.

Could it be a nutrient I'm missing?

Today I felt worried about that and had collard greens and pears.

All very complicated to me Bev Anne.

I am striving to get and keep BS under control, which is working (with help of medication). And I know if I lose enough weight I can decrease medication or maybe stop it.

I'm not having much luck as getting down to 20 so far.

But I feel full and satisfied.

There is a lot of discussion over whether to use net carbs or gross carbs. My rule is to use net carbs on real food and gross carbs on processed foods -- but I rarely eat anything processed so for all intents and purposes I count net carbs. As for the number of carbs, that is very individual. if you test for ketones you will know if you are in ketosis or not and how many carbs you can have and still be in ketosis. When you become fat adapted your body becomes very good at using ketones for fuel and you may be able to stay in ketosis at a slightly higher carb level. Becoming fat adapted takes weeks or even months of being in ketosis and everyone is different.
The number of carbs you eat does not determine whether or not you are in ketosis -- your individual body determines that. That being said anybody who consistently eats under 20 gross carbs will probably get into ketosis in a very few days. Of course the only way to be sure you are in ketosis is to test.

Bev Anne, I think they said on the other Keto team to keep carbs at 20 grams (gross).

So I don't guess my day was Keto, but it was a good low carb day:

There are lots of veggies and berries available on a ketogenic program -- we just have to count the carbs and find out what works for us individually. On a regular basis I eat broccoli, cauliflower, celery and other lowcarb veggies. I also include blackberries, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries as well as a few chunks of pineapple in my program from time to time.

Bev Anne, how do you feel about the fact that on strict Keto, one misses out on all the colorful fruits and vegetables that are so good for our body and immune system? Squash, green beans, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes...to name a few

I've been having a few fresh blackberries some days...love them.

We have recently discovered that Costco is the best place to buy nuts -- pecans, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, pistachios, almonds and cashews -- mostly their own brand, Kirkland. I don't like ordering food from the US -- it's too much hassle.

Bev Anne, where do you get pecans in Canada? I guess they are shipped in.

Let me tell you where the BEST pecans can be purchased. A grower, company name Sunnyland Farms, out of Albany Georgia, the Pecan Capital of the world.

They sell only the best. They are the largest distributor of pecans. Okay they cost a little more than some others, but they are excellent pecans.

They have a website for ordering. They also make delicous candied pecans which I better not eat.

I think I did well today:

1161 30 68 101 7

Please share the foods you had today for ideas.

I'm pretty boring. I had three Atkins shakes, 2 oz cheese, broccoli with a pat of butter, and a Chick-fil-A 12 pc nuggest.

Tomorrow we are having lunch at The Growler (a sports bar) where I'll have a salad topped with grilled chicken breast and lemon vinegarette.

Followed by a movie, Hollywood, with Brad Pitt and Leo.

Then Saturday night I'll have my two grandkids, 5 and 2, spend the night with us, and the next day. Lots of exercise taking care of them.

Julia, interesting that you lived in Florida...my neighboring state (I'm in GA).

We've been to PCB every year for the last 40 years...great place for the kids and grandkids to enjoy themselves, with the pretty water and sugar sand.

It wasn't the same this year though. Red flags out every day. Several people actually were caught in rip currents and drowned. Jelly fish all over the beach. Cases of flesh-eating bacteria all around.

My fav vacation ever (I've been twice) - Cape Cod! Love it.

Next on my bucket list - Prince Edward Island! Maybe Bev Anne or James has been there. I think I'd like to fly to Maine, rent car, drive up coast of Maine, then maybe take a ferry to PEI. Not sure.

I can't see well enough anymore to drive in strange places (macular degeneration), so maybe one of my daughters will go with me.

Well, I sure wish our friend had not brought that Bavarian Black Forest Cake to our house because I got into it again today.

This has really thrown my low carb plan out the windo, but still under 80, and calories under 1500.

So not a lost day exactly, just not a great or even good day!

And he knows I've been trying to be careful to keep my BS under control.

What to do about food pushers? I once worked with a lady who KNEW full well I was eating healthy and losing weight, she even ASKED how much weight I had lost. Then she came in one day and put a piece of pie on my desk, saying, "I thought you needed some pie."

LOL. Glad I'm retired now.

This year we have been moving from Nanaimo, BC to Okotoks, AB -- lots of travelling back and forth but I wouldn't exactly call it a vacation! We are now in Okotoks and the last of our possessions arrives tomorrow morning (the furniture).

In September we plan to go to Banff for a few days. My go to meal in a restaurant is a hamburger without the bun. Unless they have something else on the menu that is keto friendly like a chicken Caesar salad with no croutons.

Hi Jan, never been to North Carolina (yet)... We tend to do most of our traveling in the fall. This year we'll just go back to our usual favorite Branson which is closer, since we don't have a lot of time for extra traveling... I used to live in Florida back in the 60's, this whole 50th anniversary of the Space Program - launch & man on the moon etc. was right when we lived in Rockledge and Cocoa, FL (on the mainland, not to be confused with Cocoa Beach.). At one point we lived basically straight across the Indian River (a lagoon) from the actual launch site, which was a few miles downrange from the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). I was a young thing then, 8 or 9 years old...

We were in Panama City Beach around 2003 or so, I forget exactly... As well as Daytona, St Peteresburg/Tampa, and for awhile I also lived in Tallahassee. Never really been to Miami and never been to the Keys. That's still on the Bucket list, I guess! (we were at a suburb of Miami once to visit one of my dad's friends, in Hollywood, FL but I really don't remember too much about that trip, other than the guy lived in a houseboat!! No actual home!!).

Enjoy your travels!

Has anyone been on vacation this season? I know James can be a world traveler.

We've been to: Amelia Island, Key West, then finally Panama City Beach. Next trip is Highlands N.C. in October for the leaves.

I have to admit, eating out is a big deal for us when we take trips, but I plan to make better choices in October, and do a lot of walking.

James I cannot have those Atkins bars either, they spike my BS. Sugar alcohol.

I'm happy to report that I have lost 8 pounds in a month.

And despite the piece of "birthday cake" yesterday, my FBS was 111 which is not normal but not bad at all.

There is still cake in the fridge for my husband and I must stay away from it. Bavarian Black Forest cake is truly delicious.

Jan,
yes Keto is low carb, ... very very low carb.

I've seen other Atkins products (the bars), and used to consume them many years ago, but in the end they were too high in carbs to fit into a Keto plan. Looking at that drink I was surprised that it only had only 2 grams of carbs (I don't subtract fibre when I'm counting).

Of course it's entirely up to you what you eat but that is not a product that I would consider adding to my diet. It is highly processed and has several ingredients that are not usually recommended by the keto experts. Personally I stay away from processed foods like that. Also I have heard it said that having your calories in liquid form is not as satiating as solid food.

Hi James! And thanks James and Bev Anne for all the information!

I agree, I want to eat a little fruit or vegetable every day. I think my system needs the fiber.

Today was not a "low" carb day for me, it was my birthday, and a friend brought over a Bavarian Black Forest Cake home made by him, so I could not be rude and did eat a small serving. I have to say it was delicious.

So my gross carbs to day were 82, net were 58. Calories about 1200.

Otherwise, I think my calories are low because the Januvia has done away with my appetite. Never fear, I can stand to lose a lot of weight.

That's interesting James. It went up in smoke! I have been away because my husband was in hospital from January through May, and is still in physical therapy. Colonoscopy gone awry...almost bled to death...caused a slight stroke. Poor fella! He can walk now but lacks good balance.

Glad to hear that Keto is low carb and I don't have to understand macros.

JRWELL58,
as they say in French, " C'est moi ". It's me.

Yes the team "Sparking Low Carb" just went away in a poof of smoke ... and actually there was no smoke. I didn't ask for it to be deleted, so I have no idea how that happened.

I agree with GRINGUITA, your calories are low, but they are Keto. To me Keto means carbs as low as you want, as I agree with her that you really don't need any. The part of your body that does need a few carbs a day is a very tiny part of your brain. The rest of your brain is flexible, but this part needs glucose. That said it really doesn't matter, its so little that your body can make fuel for it from protein (see gluconeogenesis). Long and short of it is that your body will do just fine no matter how low your daily carbs go, even down to zero.

From a practical point though I never get to zero. I like some veggies, like broccoli with butter. I'm going to eat a few carbs.

Hi again Jan !

James is one of the leaders on this team and several other lowcarb teams.

Jan your calories seem awfully low. As far as macros are concerned they are not the same for everyone -- we all have to find out what works for us.

We do not have to eat any carbs -- our bodies can make any carbs that are needed -- which are very few since most of the cells in our body prefer ketones as fuel.

Jan what is in those Atkins shakes? Most keto experts don't recommend processed foods nor do they usually recommend eating 3x a day. One of the main principles is to eat when you are hungry and quit when you have had enough.

Okay, here are numbers for today:

calories 730
carbs -gross 22
fat 55
protein 42
fiber 8

Can someone please tell me how to calculate if it is keto?

I would have had more calories, but ran out of Atkins shakes.

KDGirl, LOL, I don't really understand what the macros are supposed to be, so yes, I'm trying to stay low carb *since I'm diabetic), and thinking someone will give advice if I post my totals, as to what the numbers should be. I love the tracker!

I used to be on Sparking Low Carb, but it disappeared. And I miss my pal James.

Have fun on your vacation! We all know part of vacation is trying out new restaurants! I'm sure you will try to limit the starches.

Oh, my nutritionist said keep carbs at least 15 per meal because, "your brain needs carbs to function."

And Julia I have heard the hormone theory. Does she cite any studies? At KetoCon several of the women presenters said that being a woman does not mean you cannot benefit from the same program (keto) as men. Just wondering... as I am in prime hormone mode post-menopause.

Jan are you trying to eat a well formulated keto diet or just low carb? Your macros are definitely not keto - although much healthier than the average American.

Why does your nutritionist want you to eat a minimum of 15 carbs 3X per day?

I found chocolate dusted almonds at Walmart. Urgh. They are so delicious. I know I have gone over on carbs.

4 days until my vacation - when I get back, I will start tracking again. Until then, I'm just trying to hold the fort down and not gain. Fingers crossed.
