I just finished a 3 day fast -- actually about 68 hours and I plan to do one every month and a 36+ hour fast every week. I find the first day the worst so I prefer a 3 day fast to alternate day fasting.

I'm rechurning this thread since I want to do some ADF.

Next week - M-W-F fasting. I have no one to cook for, no one to eat with, it should be fairly easy. I'm still trying to get under 140 by the time I go to Hawaii (2 weeks 1 day!!)

And I have loads of projects to do so I will be really busy while I'm doing this.

Anyone else have fasting plans?

Bev Anne I've been looking for a new protocol anyway!! My hubs is done with his Wednesday class, so I don't have the opportunity to fast through Wednesdays anymore (easily). So I'm jumping on OMAD Mondays and Thursdays with you. It's much easier if I have someone to do it with - I don't give up as easily!! And I can still have dinner at night which works for me too.

I'm thinking about the 5 day protocol - maybe next month.

At the moment I am doing a 5-day Fasting Mimicking diet once a month and the rest of the month I am doing one meal a day on Mondays and Thursdays the rest of the month. This can be modified to suit my life but it should work. I have just started the OMD on M&Th this month. My OMD days are also low calorie as well -- that's how they mimic fasting. I have done longer fasts but the weight seems to come right back on afterward so I am trying this protocol for now. I agree with Karen we have to mix it up so that our bodies don't get used to any one way of eating and adjust because they think we are starving them. :-)

I personally feel like you can try anything and see how it works for you.

A few months ago I did M-W-F fasting - where I ate only dinner on those days, and had 2 meals on the other days. I was still snacking too. All keto food of course.

I like mixing it up, and Dr. Fung recommends mixing your protocol up too. I would try what you are interested in and see how it works!!

New to this group. What protocol do you use for your fasting? Last week I did OMAD eating between 5 and 6pm each day. This week I'm doing TMAD. I eat a small meal mid to late afternoon, then at 6pm I eat my main meal. Done by about 7pm and go straight through till my next meal the next afternoon. Sort of giving my body a little break from all the seriousness of the OMAD last week. Some days were harder than others but I did just fine. I had to remember to salt my water and take my Magnesium and everything went well then. I'm into my 6th week of keto. I have the books; Keto Clarity, The Complete Book of Fasting, and The Obesity Code. When would be a good target for me to consider for my first longer fast of 48 hours from your personal experience? (I know, everyone is different - just want to see what worked for some of you great Sparkers n maybe give some things a try - if it's not working for me, fasts are easy to break...just eat).
Will appreciate any feedback. Thank you. emoticon

I didn't use Valter Longo's products because I think they are way too expensive for what you are getting and also, I didn't want to try to have them shipped to Canada.

I loved the fasting mimicking protocol that I used -- I just ate one meal a day for 5 days -- the target macros were 80% fat, 10% protein and 10% carbs which I got from the Ketotarian Book by Dr. Willl Cole. But my macros were more like 80% fat, 13% protein, and 7% carbs. I ate the same thing every day -- it was a pancake made of 6Tbs ground flaxseed, and 3 eggs blended together and cooked in 3Tbs coconut oil. This is a similar recipe to my lowcarb bread recipe which I may use next time.

The Ketotarian Book is more plant-based and offers ketogenic plans that are vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian. I went the pescatarian route for the first month but now I have added back some other proteins occasionally. I am really enjoying it and feeling well eating a lot of veggies.

KD I do know that I need to let my body rest & refeed more steadily before I do any additional fasting. Ill likely automatically go with a more OMAD, 18:6 or 20:4, but eat daily for 2-3 weeks. You never know, maybe my body will reset itself enough so that I could still lose weight on this regiment. That would be great!

Bev Anne, I do have Keto Clarity & Obesity Code & have read both. The Ketotarian is a new one on me. Ill have to check that out. How was the fast mimicking for you? Did you use the Valter Longo products?

Thanks again for th kudos! Hope you are both doing well!

Jules I don't know for sure - but it seems to me that 3-42 hour fasts are very extreme, and if you are adding in an extended fast on top of that - you would be wise to let your body recover from all of that fasting before starting either of them again. Your body needs to be refed as you know, and I think you can wait another month before starting the 3-42 or another longer fast.

This is my opinion, and others may think something different but I think better safe than sorry.

And Bev Anne is correct - many are not doing fasting because it doesn't work well for them. We are all N=1 experiments, and congrats in your successes!!

The beginning keto book that I would recommend is Keto Clarity by Jimmy Moore and Dr. Eric Westman and my favourite book at the moment is Ketotarian by Dr. Will Cole. As for fasting -- it works for some and not so well for others. I no longer do extended water fasts. I do IF of about 18 hours every day and last month I did a 5-day fasting mimicking diet and plan to do another one in March.

Hey all! Im making lots of strides in building up my fasting muscle since December. I got on a regular schedule of doing 3 43-48 hr fasts per week, M,W,F. I did this for over a month, with 1 72 & 1 96 hr fast in there. Today, I am ending my longest fast yet, 110 hrs (5 days). The first couple days were the hardest.but not too bad since Im fat adapted. Im going to do a slow refeed (following Siim Lands advice on YouTube) and keeping it Keto as usual. In the past 7 weeks, I have dropped just shy of 20 lbs. I am thrilled with my fasting progress & really enjoying this lifestyle. My confidence is building and fears are subsiding.

KD, Im like you, and seem to basically maintain on Keto and must fast to drop weight. I love Dr Fungs books and works. I know in his CGtoF they recommend if you do a 7 day fast that you need to wait a month before doing another one, which is what Im planning on. But, Im assuming, that doesnt mean you cant go back to a routine of 3 42s per week. Am I right in assuming this?

Have a great week everyone!

Hi JSTETSER -

The first book and second book I always recommend are by Dr. Jason Fung - The Obesity Code (which is very sciencey but has great info in it) and The Complete Guide to Fasting. I read the CGtoF first... got the ideas down and then read the Obesity Code.

Maria Emmerich also has a LOT of cookbooks, and some keto books as well. She's awesome.

This team is a good resource, but also check out Team Keto. There are great team leaders on both teams with a lot of good information to share. And history with keto.

I'm recently trying to do a limited fasting protocol - 24 hours on Monday (from Sunday night to Monday night) and then 48 hours on Wednesday (from Tuesday night to Thursday night) and having some success.

These last two weeks have been really stressful (my father in law had a heart attack) so I haven't done fasting for more than 24 hours in a row but I'm trying to pick it up.

I find that I lose when I fast, then hang on to that loss with keto. Hopefully that will continue as I'm down to my last 15 pounds.

You do what you have to do Jonnie. Good job!

Have fun on your trip. I'm going to try the fasting protocol this week, but will probably scale back to two days (Tuesday and Thursday) instead of T/Th/S.

I know this event is over and done with - but like Holly said - just put something on your plate and carry it around!!

And like Sadie said - if it's not Keto I don't eat it. That's all. Maybe have a small bag of macadamia nuts in your purse to eat before or after.

Exactly! And I'm feeling good doing that. Just hope they have something like cold shrimp at this reception tonite, but I doubt it if I know this group. If I don't find something I can eat to stay keto, I'll just smile a lot and wait til I get home to eat. Not ruining my good fast result just to be social.

Way to go Jules!!

And Jazz - make fasting fit into your life. If you can't do 3x42 this week, do 2x42 and a 22, and then maybe next week? What you can do. It works.

I started on Sunday doing a 3 X 42. (See I'm learning the FB lingo -- I had to ask someone what that meant :) So today I'm doing my second day of 42 hours which will last until noon tomorrow. Then I don't know what the heck I'll do about Friday since I'll have a reception to attend -- may have to cut it to 22 hours. Whatever!

KD, thank you for directing me! For now, Im going to keep it simple & work up to 3 fasting days per week. Ive been IFing for months now and did one 65 hr fast. As long as I continue my sole water, I should be good with this. Thanks!

Jules I am posting Dr. Fung's weekly fasting protocol for those that are interested in following. You don't have to do the one for the week, but it's one place to keep them all alive. It's called "General Fasting Thread".

I really really like the MWF fast. This week's is weird. And too long for me. And I have company in town, but I did post it. I'd take this protocol and chat on the general fasting thread if you need support. I'm here for you either way!!

MOM it's been very interesting. I lost 7.9 pounds in July. BevAnne lost 8.6 if I'm correct.

We are now following Dr. Fung's fasting group's weekly challenge. This week - 2 48 hour fasts. So no eating on Monday or Thursday, 2 meals a day the other days except Tuesday and Friday, where you eat only dinner.

Will start another fasting thread for those interested.

I’m going to try and fast all day today into tomorrow. Funny how not drinking enough water leads me to bad choices and fasting is only successful if I drink lots of water! Buying new running shoes tomorrow and updating my music on my iPod. Training for a 5k to get back into running again!

Opps. Sorry. I just saw your post @KDGIRL

Yes. It is about getting the most out of your fasts. That if you fast say--over night (nothing after dinner) until lunch, a good share of that time you're not very active. So while that's important for sleep, repair of the body, etc. it isn't going to burn as much as if you fast from dinner to dinner or do something (movement wise) to boost your fat burning while you sleep. Which of course is why most of those MDs, Physiologists, personal trainers who know about these things tell us to MOVE and watch our diets.

So this gal I've been watching on YouTube (Flipping 50) goes into the different types of exercise--functional, strength building etc. and recommends we do some of both each week. Work on balance. Work on functional strength. Work on major strength building. For the later, exhausting the muscle works best. So any single exercise which works a muscle group, such as a squat, can be used until exhaustion. So if you are very fit, you will have to add weight--perhaps a weighted vest, for new moms--their baby in a baby carrier, etc. You do the exercise until you cannot do one more repetition. Apparently this both builds the muscle and fuels the metabolism. The part I recall them talking about the most is that it also fuels the body to balance the hormones (who cannot use that!) and this resets a lot of complications people have as so much is driven by the hormones. They were saying too that it causes your body to burn more calories at rest and stimulates your own production of Human Growth Hormone (HGH) which maximizes your fat loss and muscle/strength/lean body mass growth. While fasting, until sugars are in the blood stream, the autophage process can kick in--which cleans up the old junk, recycles protein, etc. It is way more complicated than I can recall-but I like fasting, getting hungry, and thinking about what's going on INSIDE my body--and how I am helping it heal and do all kinds of things I wouldn't otherwise be patient with--and this really helps me, because I'm literally picturing the benefit when I most need the encouragement.

Wishing everyone well in finding what works best for your individual needs.

I'll be interested in hearing how it goes for you gals! I did this last week--where I went parts of 3 days fasting (1 whole day in between) and then back to the alternating 18/6 or 20/4.

This is the fasting protocol I am trying this week from a post by Jean Polino on the Obesity Code facebook group.

Sunday: Eat a dinner high in fat! My favorite high fat meal is eggs, bacon and avocado. If I eat that I can go for days! Put together a meal of all your favorite high fat foods in preparation for the next 2 days.
Monday: Fast all day
Tuesday: Fast until Dinner. Plan a dinner of your choice. How you break your fast is up to you. If you need to ease into it, start with something like bone broth or some avocado. If you dont have issues then plan a nutritionally dense meal to include green leafy vegetables and avocado to replenish your electrolytes.
Wednesday: I usually do an 18:6 protocol. Fast until Lunch, plan a lchf lunch and dinner again make it a high-fat meal.
Thursday: Fast all day
Friday: Fast all day until dinner. Break your fast with a lchf meal of your choice.
Saturday: Back to an 18:6 day

I change yesterday's fast to a 24 hour one -- I was really hungry which is unusual for me -- it turns out I was dropping some weight and I am down this morning -- I just hope it lasts until Sunday (weigh-in day).

I will eat two meals today and one on Friday for another 24-hour fast.

I love the idea of one exercise to exhaustion concept. Can you explain that a bit more E04?

Yes, it's true all our bodies are different and different things work for each of us. However, it is also true that if we do the same protocol all the time our bodies will adjust and we may not lose anymore. There are different opinions because there are different things that work for different people. We need to find what works for us individually.

One of the things that really helps me is the support that I get here and on the facebook fasting group that I mentioned earlier. We need to support each other on our ways to find what works for us.

Regarding doing the same thing (fasting/feeding schedule), there seems to be vast differences of opinions. Not an uncommon occurrence in these days of information overload! So I spent some time looking into WHY people who hold different opinions, state this or that method is their preferred method. When I did, it seems there are many people who hold different opinions based on what works best for their own body (not necessarily in agreement with others or the science). So, while what other's recommend is awesome for a benchmark place to get started, or even for reference when things no longer work (for one's self) and need to be switched up, it pays to stick with what works best for you--and work through things to figure out what works best for you. I find things change quite a bit for me. Did my first 3-day fast. Worked great. I was FULL of energy the entire time. Saw amazing results. I did add one thing--based on an exercise phsiologist's POV. She noted her own fasts were more effective if she did one exercise (pick one of choice--pushups, squats, what-ever-you-want) until exhaustion--where you cannot do one more set--once a day during fast days--switching up the exercise so you're not using the same muscle every day). Results are amazing to me! I didn't expect to see what I would call "20 year old" results with one day's effort, in my over 50 body!

That would explain why my third week was not productive -- but I think I'll still stick this week out before I change.

It's a pretty active Facebook page but I like the support there.

I have also heard that doing the same thing more than two weeks in a row is counterproductive so it is probably time to change the scenario. When my house guest arrives, I'm going to see how open she is to fasting at all.

Thanks for the link - I'll check it out. Last time I went to the site, and got swallowed up by the rabbit hole!!

Here is the link again to the facebook group with Dr. Fung and Megan which does the fasting support. I fixed the link below as well.

I am going to think about following what they do since they switch it up every week. I am finding that my body is getting used to this 3 day a week fast and is adapting to it so it is probably time to change. I think the facebook group is going to do a longer fast next week and I will probably do that. We'll see what they come up with.

I have an appointment on August 8 at the lab for my A1c so we will see what effect this has had on my blood sugar.

I am doing some 24 hour fasting this week. Dinner to dinner, but eating dinner. We have company that will be at our house for who knows how long. I'm very happy with the progress I have made with the 3 day fasting, and I would like to continue, but for now, going the 3 days a week with the 24 hour fasting is probably going to suffice. When I get my house back to myself, I will throw a few more 42 hour fasts in.

I think Bev Anne is doing great with the 3 day routine - right Bev Anne? She is much more the accomplished faster than I am. But it's been a great exercise in will power for me.

I have heard that the closer you get to your goal, the less fasting is constructive. But I've also heard that fasting can eliminate the last few pounds when you are close but not exactly there. I'm not sure - I'm still researching. I have lost half of my weight, but still have the other half to lose, so I am not close yet.

I think in August a 2 day a week protocol will be a change. Of course you can go 3 if you like, (BA) but for me, that will probably work for my home situation.

How is the fasting going? I am kinda confused that last week I had an easier time fasting and this week I just want food. Usually during cycle my cravings are higher so I end up eating to stave them off. I’m up a pound so far this week. Grr. Going to the fair tonight, aiming for no junk and lots of water.

Sounds like a plan - I'm ready for something different. I will do the M-W-F this week if I can - and 24 hours for sure if I can't. My company never showed up, so I'm not sure if she is coming, or if she figured something else out.

My son and dil are definitely coming on Tuesday night, staying Wednesday and leaving early Thursday. So I will be making pulled pork on Wednesday, and some sides. Working on that already.

This week they are doing 3 24 hour fasts -- that might fit your week Karen. I am going to stick with what we have been doing but I think there will be a longer fast planned for the next week and I may do that one.

I usually eat about 1230 - 600.

Had a great day yesterday - spent part of it floating in the pool it was so hot outside.

Today - my weekly weigh in - down 1.2 pounds from last week. That's good news!!

Like I was saying, I'm not sure what next week holds. I will try and get my fasting in, but may not be able to do complete days with company coming in and my life being disrupted from the simple hubby and me alone normality.

Karen Ogilivie (from Impulsive Keto) lost 110 pounds in a year doing this kind of protocol. It's a real thing.

I do agree that you need to shake things up though. Can you post the Fung/Ramon fasting thread link Bev Anne?

Ketones 3.9 today; BG 76. Happy Sunday everyone!!

That's pretty much what we are doing -- only skipping eating MWF. I don't eat before 11 and normally finish about 4.

Saw a YouTuber who recommends, if you need to switch it up, once you are fat adapted going from your normal IF to skipping a day and then doing a normal IF.

So for example if you eat from 2pm to 8 pm Mon
Skip Eating Tues
Return to eating 2 pm Wed

I've not tried it yet but I'm thinking about it.

Still no plans that will disrupt the MWF schedule so I think I'll give it a go next week again. There is a facebook group with Dr. Fung and Megan and they suggest a different fast each week. Last week it was the MWF fast so it fit right in. I don't know what they will suggest for next week so I reserve the right to change my plan depending on what they announce.

Next week is going to be tricky for me. My son comes in T -W and leaves Thursday. We might have house guest(s) also. I will play it by ear, but in the very least, I can do 24 hour fasting and have dinner.

As Jason Fung MD says - make fasting fit your life, not the other way around.

Weigh in tomorrow - can't wait!

I didn’t actually accomplish any full fasting days this week. 24 hrs 3x this week was good. Going to try for next week the 3 days!

It’s nice when people notice! And I always have felt like I found a secret to success and wanted to share it with everyone.?? Often when I did the next thing they said was, oh I could never give up (insert fav carb here). I don’t miss hardly anything except a baked sweet treat once in awhile. But I was a baker and a dang good one... it’s always gonna be hard fo me.
I also did not fast yesterday after all. I think I will give today a try. Saturday maybe just do a 24 hr. My weight is stable at 138.6-138.8 this week and with joyous pms symptoms I’m pretty happy no gain! And no cravings!

Changing up my fasting days this week. I had a wine tasting to go to last night (well I didn't have to, but I wanted to) and so I ate food. Drinking while fasting is definitely a no-no. My alcohol tolerance is really low these days, due to keto I think. No carbs to absorb the alcohol.

On the way home, stopped at McDonald's and got a double cheeseburger, no bun. They put it on a leaf of lettuce, and in a tray and it was actually quite tasty! I wouldn't eat that as a regular part of my diet, but just goes to show how you can fit almost anything into a keto diet.

Fasting M-Th-Sa this week instead of M-W-F. Weigh in still on Sunday, I'm really feeling good!

I took 2nd quarter paperwork in to the accountant yesterday. His wife, who works with him, GUSHED about how good I looked!! She said she saw it in my face, my clothes, which are getting pretty baggy, and she was "how did you do it?" That was a big deal for me, because I'm not having anyone one in my real life (hubby, boss, friends) say anything.

Truly. Why am I the only parent with this issue? The parents rented the pavilion and are providing dinner and bottled waters...but not hanging out? I know the too...but not friends enough to have their phone number...I wanna call and ask if they lost their minds!?My DH out voted me. I may be hanging out at the lake with my book tomorrow. She has to be picked up by 830 anyway.
