* For allowing myself to sink into the flood of emotions that were so painful these past few days...all the while reminding myself that they WILL pass. I've had two dear friends lose their spouses in the past few weeks, and I think the reminders snuck up on me.
* For having the time to heal...
* For the BEST tomatoes I've had in years!
* For my isolation buddy. Not perfect but enough to help me get through these difficult times.
* For having volunteer projects to keep me feeling needed

Marveling at and grateful for the authors who share their lives with us, good and bad.

Thankful that today was pretty peaceful but also pretty motivating in getting things done. It looks better around here, now to keep it up.

Love this quote from John Banville's Time Pieces (memoir): "We cease to be amazed by things—the sky, the turning of the seasons, love, other people—only because we have grown accustomed to them."

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-Gourmet mashed potatoes I made for myself (jazzing up the soft foods)!
-Evening birdsong ... a bit different than morning birdsong, methinks
-A freshly mowed lawn
-The lovely glass of white wine I had to end the work week (wine that was shipped to me by my company); how fortunate am I to receive such luxuries?
-A quiet evening at home snuggling in with the kitty girls
-My tools for living relatively calmly in relatively tumultuous times

Have a great evening,

Good morning, dear friends,

Gratitude is ever more important in these difficult times~~

~ especially resonating with Ann and Sandra's thoughts this morning -- bowing in gratitude

~ in spite of it all, we live in such a bubble in the USA, with so many luxuries ours that many around the planet will never see or know

~ I found my free weights, one step closer to beginning strength training

~ got one load of wash done yesterday and the other today, both hung out to dry

~ gradually becoming more accepting of my *chunky* body and its process in become less so

Blessed be,

Grateful that: Rosy not only had good appetite for breakfast and dinner, she also seems way less stoned than yesterday. I've never seen her like that before! No tail wagging, its like she forgot to. She's her cheerful self again, although still recovering from the procedure. Very grateful for that.

Grateful for good dogs. Such good dogs.

"Having eyes, but not seeing beauty; having ears, but not hearing music; having minds, but not perceiving truth; having hearts that are never moved and therefore never set on fire. These are the things to fear," said the headmaster.

ttochan.pdf

This engaging series of childhood recollections tells about an ideal school in Tokyo during World War II that combined learning with fun, freedom, and love. This unusual school had old railroad cars for classrooms, and it was run by an extraordinary man--its founder and headmaster, Sosaku Kobayashi--who was a firm believer in freedom of expression and activity. In real life, the Totto-chan of the book has become one of Japan's most popular television personalities--Tetsuko Kuroyanagi. She attributes her success in life to this wonderful school and its headmaster. The charm of this account has won the hearts of millions of people of all ages and made this book a runaway bestseller in Japan, with sales hitting the 4.5 million mark in its first year.

Blessed be,

Grateful today is over. Rosy did well at the vet. They really liked her happy spirit. She's a healthy dog, just needs a tumor taken out. It is pretty likely (and I am hoping that's the ase) its benign. The aftermath of the surgery may be challenging, but I have hope that it will be the most minimal damage to underlying structures.

She's a little suspicious of me. But that will pass. So I am grateful that dogs are forgiving.

Me too on the recipe, please!! Yum, yum!

Tonight, I'm grateful for:

-Calling a cousin on her birthday and surprising her
-A California cousin (one of the few family members who can get away with calling me Stephi) who has COVID but is quarantining at home with biggest symptom being extreme tiredness (she's 15 years older than me!)
-Keeping in better touch with everybody, and opting for a real voice whenever possible (I find it more connective than e-mail, text or online chat)
-Having gourmet popcorn sent to my wonderful vet clinic; they were choked up when they called to thank "Cleo," saying especially during this time, it means even more to them
-Small things can turn somebody's day into a good one; focusing on being kind, flexible and patient
-Always, my health
-A wonderful phone visit with my sister-in-law and finding out many unknowns about my oldest nephew
-The agenda for tonight is a (another) quiet night at home with the girls; I'd say that life is pretty good

Goodnight all,
Stephanie

Grateful~~

~ the dish sounds FABULOUS, Kathy. Can you share the recipe easily? (Love that she's following in her grandmother's footsteps and pursuing nursing!)

~ I've experienced no lack of good food through all of the madness of recent months!

~ plenty of outdoors and sun today -- after a long-ish bike ride this morning, we spent almost two hours at a park on the Arkansas River this afternoon

~ among other culinary delights, I enjoyed polenta topped with melted cheddar cheese for lunch today, caloric but nutritious (now, even with a simple salad and oil-less dressing, I'll go slightly over my max for the day; so many lessons on this journey)

~ rev-ing up the motivation to begin doing a 20-min. strength training video every-other-day again

Blessed be,

GRATEFUL

* For the chance to vote in November!
* An amazing recipe that I used last night for dinner. Crispy fried Feta cheese with Garbanzo beans, zucchini, yogurt, pasta, and lots of fresh herbs! Just finished leftovers for lunch!
* There is progress being made on some issues in my new community
* Access to medical care. And to see the precautions being taken at the clinic to ensure patients remain safe
* My granddaughter (who will begin pursuing her nursing degree this fall) is excited that I asked her to remove my sutures in 10 days. Her first medical procedure from "the other side"!

~ so happy you're feeling better and able to be more active now, dear Stephanie!

~ another long bike ride today

~ pleased that bike riding doesn't hurt or have after-effects

~ enjoyed brussel sprouts with scrambled eggs this morning

~ great to be re-learning lessons about food: for instance, 5 sheets of graham crackers is just 5 calories less than 5 slices of my currently favorite bread and a lot less satisfying than the bread

KIM - I'm with you on the sad feelings! All still definitely worth it ...

Tonight I'm grateful for all of this, but so much more:

-EXERCISE! It makes the top of my list because I had to do without for 72 hours; and it's one of my big coping tools
-A lovely hour-long walk with a lovely, amazing friend, on opposite sides of the street, at the cemetery ...
-The temps, low 80s today and humidity is down a bit ... aaaaaah, with a perfect breeze
-The water gardens that really bring me joy in their mere presence
-Friends who care
-My mom checking in on me tonight, so fortunate to have her still in this world!!
-My sister, we both do a good job of being the other's rock
-The stunning card I received from Cleo's ophthalmologist ... you don't find vets, let alone doctors, that still hand-write notes to new patients; and the card had a Siamese cat on the front who was wearing quite stylish eyeglasses!

Goodnight all,
Stephanie

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-The dragonflies buzzing around the water gardens
-Cleo being such a sweetie (other than running from me) in dealing with all of these eye drops; poor girl, I feel like I'm stalking her!
-Cassie, my only lap kitty of the three and not even on a totally regular basis
-Rosie, who's always very content to be near and hang out
-Letting myself be and just sitting with some difficult moments
-My comfortable home, my safe zone, my shelter from the storms

Gratitude abounds~~

~ Though I've been disappointed in watermelon so far this season, the peaches and nectarines have been outstanding and reasonably priced

~ Through the library's unique lending process during COVID-19, I was able to pick up Elizabeth Gilbert's new book today, City of Girls. I had watched an interview with her about the premise of the book and it sounds fascinating. I also got some other entertaining books, I hope, including Alexander McCall Smith's The Second Worst Restaurant in France.

~ I prepared balsamic brussels sprouts today which I've been wanting for a while.

~ I also cooked some polenta. I had forgotten how caloric it is, about 450 cal per cup!

~ It rained last night and into late morning today, which kept the temperature moderate for most of the day

Blessed be,

Grateful
* For all the veggies ripening in my garden! More zucchini than I have eaten in a year but it is SO good! And the cherry tomatoes? Best ever!
* That I finished a huge project for the Concert Association board I sit on
* For our weekly neighborhood socially distant gathering
* For my 98 year old dad. On this special day to honor him, I feel extraordinarily blessed to have him in my life! He is still relatively healthy, ambulatory, and cognitively intact!
* That I was able to get a mani-pedi for the first time in over 3 months. My nails are so thin, and they crack lengthwise and bleed and hook on everything, Not because of getting the gel on them... I started gel because I couldn't stand it any longer about 10 years ago! And now, they are smooth and strong again. And the safety precautions were followed rigidly!

Today I'm grateful for:

-A nice, gentle rain, hopefully with a bit more to come as we need it
-Having plenty of soft foods on hand - fruits, veggies AND proteins - for after the small dental surgery I'm having this afternoon (amazed at how many precautions they're taking too)
-These three sweet kitties to hang out with over the weekend; best little nurses around
-Great news on Cleo's eye; kitty ophthalmologist says it's a treatable (not curable) corneal degeneration far more common in dogs, but no vision loss or pain involved
-Being well-practiced in giving her eye drops as we have 5x daily for one week, 4x daily for two weeks, etc. until 6-week follow-up; also SUPER grateful she handles it well
-Getting a picture this time of the blue heron who lands in my back yard; this is twice, so it remembers where to go! Must guard; beautiful creature I would never hurt, but I will shoo it away from eating more of my koi!!

Have a great day and evening all,
Stephanie

Thursday gratitudes
* I awakened yesterday morning to the sound of BIRDS chirping! First time ever in my near treeless neighborhood. But, I am discovering birds like to sit on my fence and sing!
* Like Bob, I continue to enjoy fresh picked something from my garden everyday! Mostly radishes, cherry tomatoes and zucchini.
* The sweetness of my granddaughter....yesterday, she got off work early and I was on the patio visiting with a medically vulnerable friend (T). She came out, wearing her mask, introduced herself to T, and explained that I had mentioned how vulnerable T was, and she wanted to make sure T was protected. She also did not get closer than 10-15 feet from her.I was so proud that she had done that on her own!
* Our governor made it mandatory today, for people to wear masks in any indoor public now.
* The Supreme Court made some amazing decisions this week.

Don't ask me how this happened, but this post from June 13 ended up on JANUARY's thread!

Grateful today (June 13)
* That I crossed my three year mark, and my labs and CT body scan show NO recurrence of cancer!
* For my granddaughter. What a delightful young lady and what joy to have this time to bond with her before she goes off to college in the fall!
* For my lovely first time garden. Ate zucchini four times this week. PLUS made zucchini bread, and zucchini pizza crust. Cherry tomatoes are delicious, and I have green beans galore...though not quite ready to eat, baby butternut squash, sweet peppers, Armenian cucumber vines that are growing like crazy, but not flowering yet. Watermelon and cantaloupe are healthy but slow. My herbs are amazing, and I have one teensy weensy bitter melon, with lots of flowers!
* My yard is alive with pollinators. LOTS of bees, butterflies, dragonflies, humming birds and I even saw a WHITE praying mantis
* Feeling safe enough to start having friends over. One at a time. Outside only. Sitting at opposite ends of the table. SO nice to have face to face human contact with old friends!
* Cities are beginning to make changes as a result of recent protests

Grateful for: phone calls that got Rosy in to see the vet sooner. It'll be next week, and am glad not to have to wait until July to get her in.

That Mom's dental things yesterday went well. She's tired today, but in very good spirits. Dad is feeling well too, and that is a double blessing.

Sandra, Nice to read of your families progress! Also great you are on track for surgery.

Today I am thankful for:

*taking myself out of the on site schedule today, to recover from my first attempt Tuesday morning, despite us being wayyyyyy behind.
*cool temps! So nice for my wife, not a hot lover, employees, and my getting back going.
*so far no clients lost, the most important thing! Just a quano ton of $ lost.
*a lot of peas! Yum! So wonderful to eat fresh and great for bad puns!

good health! Bob

Today I'm grateful for all of this ... and so much more:

-Cherishing my comfortable home, I know many have no roof over their heads
-Talking some sense into my hair stylist; I canceled my Saturday appointment (cold feet) and felt better when she let me pay her; I KNOW she's struggling, as are many
-Getting back on track with my 20/20/20 exercise plan today; progress, NOT perfection
-The extra time I get to spend with the kitty girls while working at home, priceless
-Lovely e-mail exchanges with our "hosts-that-were-to-be" on our sister trip to Banff and Jasper National Parks in Canada, the e-mail makes me feel good because I would have been there right now, hiking and kayaking with my sister ... moving on ... planning for next year
-Organic farmer's market e-mail came today, totally enticing me to get there early Saturday a.m. (first of the blueberries, rainbow carrots, chard ... on and on)
-Still enjoying the cleaner house (notice, I never say "clean house")
-The new area carpet I picked for my home office finally got unfurled and placed where wanted; it's a SUPER addition to the room and very thick and comfy

Have a lovely evening all of you fine folks ...

Stephanie

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-Hearing about your lives, struggles, plateaus and successes; the wonderful company I keep (and follow) here
-Taking a Monday off work, just because, because I didn't feel like working, to just let myself be
-A blue heron landing in my yard; tried to get my phone for a shot but she (I think, because she was not the largest heron I've seen by far) was gone, at least before getting to my fish!
-These amazing 4-legged kitty girls I live with, I learn so much from them on a regular basis; today, I took an afternoon nap with them
-Funny dream recall
-Cherishing a quiet night at home with the kitties, though I have that most nights these days; a good thing, I think

Have a lovely evening all -
Stephanie

Such a sweet thing to say Maha! I'm touched. I have fuc... up a lot but stunningly not my marriage. My key? I've worshipped the ground she walks on since I met her when I was 20 to now at 61.

Today I’m thankful for:

enjoying the quiet! Lovely to not have noise/video going on constantly to “hold it together”. (yes, Maha, I’ve been a Buddhist for over 40 years who couldn’t stand the quiet! Hah! Let’s say I was of the “karma yoga” and mind training in daily life type, who couldn’t “sit still”.) Double Hah!

qualified thanks! breath still held, scared, but not terrified, knocking on some sort of wood like compound, still not out of the woods, but so far no diverticulitis, but I didn’t say that if anyone asks. I used to have it 4-6 times a year and though controlled now, I really, really don’t want to see a repeat, after the last two months of re-hab.

Amish Popcorn, from Amazon I had bought. Also to my wife for suggesting it. Who knew the small kernels were good for those recovering from an impacted bowel??? Who haven’t been able to eat. Yum! (recent research, not a diver. contributor either)

taking some great photos of my morning pea…. Badda bump! ‘The Cascadia Snap Peas’. For some reason the chef- beloved wife- had messed up my planned photoshoot, by picking some of them for my supper the previous night. Hello! People work with me! Great art doesn’t just happen if the peas are picked!

finding my 5 DVD set of the 1973 production of ‘War & Peace’. My mother and I watched it together when I was 13; as my siblings had all left home- wasn’t sports or a western so my dad passed. I bought it 10 years ago, but haven’t been able to watch it. I believe it was the very first Masterpiece Theater and features a very young Anthony Hopkins, in one of his first screen appearances as Pierre Besukov. Oddly I identified with him when I was 13. He wore glasses, was pudgy, bookish, loved learning, and loved Natasha Rostova (I was totally crushing on her- Morag Hood), but was too shy to say anything to her.

ps.not to state the obvious, but one must write a long description of anything concerning my beloved Nikolayevich Tolstoi. You’ve thought my Tolstoy references were a joke! Next to Hermann Hesse, H.D. Thoreau, one of my fav. Authors.

Good health! Bob

~ that long-lasting, supportive, loving relationships are still out there, case-in-point: Bob and his beloved

~ chi kung class tomorrow morning for the first time in over three months — small class size, to be held out doors at a park

~ splurged on a pesto pizza tonight; we had an electricity outage from about 4 PM to 7 PM, a good excuse lol!

~ went to a park beside the Arkansas River during this time and sat in the shade under a big tree

~ meeting a local beekeeper that I just heard about to buy some honey tomorrow

Blessed be,

P. S. Which of the many productions of Gigi, Bob? I watched the 1958 one.

Maha, I have Gigi cued for my wife, another big fan!

Today I’m thankful for:

fresh Peas from the deck urns! My wife is loving the Cascadia’s! I'm still bullish on the 'Sweet and Tender' varieties, but they better get producing.
exceptional growth from a new Cuphea- Mexican Heather relative- so new the name escapes me…….
answering Spark buddies, before work this afternoon.
a match game take-off on one of my tech channels!
eating really lightly. Ok, I’m sick and have no choice, but it shows it can be done!

take care, bob

ps. it just started raining!!!!

Grateful that:

we found out that Rosy has a tumor... now we have the time to plan and get things taken care of. Grateful also, that it is highly likely that it is benign. Hoping so much that it is....

Grateful for the time I have had with her, all the places we've gone, all the things we've accompished, and that still and always, she is my happy girl.

Blessings to you all,

grateful
-for a nice long walk in the cool of the morning
-to get out of my chair and shop for groceries
-for recipe sharing
-for a surprising long afternoon nap
-for rapid cooling so I could slip in another walk before supper
-when no news turns out to be good news
-for careful stretching (I'm with you there, Stephanie)

The body is a sacred garment.
It's your first and last garment; it is what you enter life in and what you depart life with, and it should be treated with honor.

Tonight I'm grateful for:

-Being on a roll with exercise lately, competing with myself
-My company doing another healthy incentive program and points are big motivators for me
-Playing tennis tonight (second time) with an old friend of Beth's, we're enjoying just batting the ball around and I always forget how much I love tennis, let alone what great exercise it is
-All of you here on this thread and this practice we share, such a deep part of our lives
-These three sweet kitties I live with; truly don't know where I'd be without them!
-Another company town hall web meeting today
-My soft, comfortable bed calling me now, but first ... I must stretch!

Goodnight all,
Stephanie

~ trying to clean up a mess created by one of my co-workers in spite of the best laid plans.

~ another beautiful officially-still-spring day -- sunny, low humidity and moderate temperatures

~ the sounds of kids playing, birds singing and fans gentlyl whirring

~ my daughter called for consoling from her mama. I wish she was here to hug.

~ getting answers to questions

~ resigned to possibiity that i may have to send individual emails to 27 people. Feels like a big task but realize it will only take a few minutes

~ time to take a nap this afternoon (maybe) after a sleepless night last night

~ weekly women's gathering tonight

~ Oh Bob, I've also been on something of a news sabbatical. I read the headlines and first paragraph of many articles and maybe 10 full articles a day. It's helped me detach my emotions from the ups and downs of the news.

~ cautiously hopeful

~ all is well ... all is well... all is well

The name of the video by Steve Hartman that was so wonderful at the end of the tragic las couple of weeks was, ‘Kindness 101 with Steve Hartman: Patriotism’ on YouTube. Sweet, heartwarming, and well-timed. They have done ones on Kindness, Service, Fortitude, etc.

Today I am Thankful For:

*walking a bit better each day.

*a bit of rain last night. We have gone into hot, dry, and humid! So much about complaining about the rain.

*being up and in the office a few hours today- so far- tiring out though.

*Katie Porter! I’ve mentioned her before, but with all the bs in Washington, she renews my faith in the government every time I hear her.

*giving up my news, politics addiction/interest. It’s been like watching OJ’s SUV, or a car crash, etc. I’ve cleared all my YouTube subscriptions- 100ish to these and just have the ones that won’t produce so much anger, worry, and anxiety. I still have history, science, culture, art,....to keep my mind happy, and my wife who I program for, but I can’t watch the train wreck right now. I’ll still help out with the fall campaign, educate myself on local, state elections (reading), and as always never miss a vote. Just a mental break for now. It will be weird not watching these with her, but I have a large cue of other things we can.

If you made it this far: Wow! And thanks for listening! Bit wired after being out of bed a few hours! I'll get back to my normal, shorter, long post some time...

take care, bob
