Hi Char, the app for the phone is very limited in what you can do here on SP. I don't have an iPhone but I'm pretty sure you can't blog from the phone app. If you have a tablet, such as an iPad or other type of tablet, you can blog from the app for the tablet. Otherwise, the only other option is to use a desktop computer or laptop. Sorry, I don't know why the phone app doesn't have all the options available to you like it does with the app for an iPad or other tablet. emoticon

Hi Carol, sorry I missed seeing this until just now. I will put up the correct link to Michele's page. I can't edit Amy's post so I'll just have to reply with the correct link.

The October team link isn't connecting me to Michelle. It keeps gicing me an error. Not sure why.

Hi Susan,

If you click Account/Email Preferences at the top left of the Start page, scroll down to where you see "My Information" and you'll see a box that says "Use Metric". Make sure that box is unchecked, save changes and then you should just see her weight in pounds.

I'm so sorry I didn't see this before now, Susan. Let me look into this and see what I can find out. That would be embarrassing for people to congratulate you on a 70 lb weight loss when you obviously haven't lost that much. I'll try to get back to you later today or tomorrow.

This has been a long standing problem for me. When I record my weight ( which I don't often do because it freaks me out) I may enter the weight in pounds, next time I do the same and somehow it gets translated into KG and shows a loss of 70 pounds on my start page. I know this is probably simple to correct but someone tried to explain it before and I obviously didn't get it. Not that I wouldn't love a weight loss of 70 pounds but that is so far off the mark and I've got people congratulating me. It's kind of embarrassing.

Amy, this is what I found out....

Some software programs convert straight quotes and apostrophes into "smart" versions. The smart quotes supposedly make it easier to read and identify what is indicated. However, it seems that not all software programs translate them quite the same so when you copy/paste, sometimes you get odd characters instead. I know it doesn't always happen when you copy/paste. If you turn off the smart quotes in your phone's settings, it will stop that from happening though.

I thought it had to do with the software but I wanted to make sure before I told you. I didn't know about the smart quotes settings on your phone though.

Ok, thanks for your response, Cathy! It’s just weird! I just posted on the team wall from my laptop and one showed up for the quotation mark!

I don't think there is anything you can do about it. I know something similar happens when I type something up in Google Docs sometimes. I can talk to Coach Jen or Coach Denise to see what they say but I don't think there's anything you can do about it.

My laptop is a Mac. When I looked at the post I wrote before on my iphone, it had the symbols for the apostrophes, but not when I look at it on my Mac computer. Just very weird!

Just a quick question to see if anyone knows why this happens! I get frustrated when I write on the team wall or on a thread and all my apostrophes are changed into weird symbols when I type it on my laptop. It doesn’t always happen, so it is a big mystery to me!!!

And it didn’t happen in this post!

Carol,

Do you mean, you're logged in and can't leave a comment without having to log in again? if so, I don't have any idea why that would happen. The only thing I can of think of is that maybe SP is making changes and it's causing problems with you being able to post.

emoticon That's great news to hear the weight is finally dropping again. Those are some really good NSV's. It does take persistence and constantly evaluating what you are doing. Yes, nutritional calories vs. empty calories is important. Thanks, Carol, me too. emoticon

Thanks, Cathy. The weight is finally dropping. I can definitely see a difference in how my clothes fit and my energy level. I guess it takes persistence. I'm learning to not just pay attention to calories, but also focus on nutritional vs.empty calories. I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Carol, I'm not sure if what I said made sense or not. I haven't been feeling that well but you might want to cut back on how many calories you are eating especially if your weight has plateaued. Try changing up your exercising too or increasing the intensity if you are doing the same things all the time. Your body gets used to what you are doing and then you won't lose anymore. I hope that helps!

Carol, you can change it if you want. If you want to change it I'd set it to at least 100 calories above the maximum number of calories you eat in the average day. I think the number of calories is set based on how active you are, your height, weight and what your goal weight is.

Carhy, it's set at 2,062. I'm assuming that's where fitbit has me since I didn't put in that number. I reach that goal, but it takes quite a bit longer than it does to reach the other goals. It'll let me change the number. I just wasn't sure if I should.

Carol,

What does SP say about your calories? I mean what is the minimum and maximum number of calories you should be eating? Let me look at the Fitbit app to see if I can change the number of calories.

Cathy,
I'm trying to figure out what number to set for fitbit calories. All of my circles turn green, but then I have to work beyond that to fill in the circle for calories. It's set to 2,062. Obviously, it's a default number. Does that seem about right?

Okay, for those that have a Mac the following are the keys you press to Copy and Paste.

Just highlight what you want to copy either with the mouse or by holding down the shift key and using the arrow keys.

Then to copy you hold down the command key and the C key.

To paste what you've copied just go to where you want what you've copied pasted then hold down the command key and the V key.

If you have any questions let me know. I'll try to post more helpful tips soon.

Yeah, there are many things you don't know when you first get on the internet and talk to people. Yep, lots of exclamation points can also be considered shouting. Hahaha That's funny about thinking lol meant lots of love. Many years ago when the internet was still fairly knew, I had a friend from junior high and high school that I would chat with from time to time and I noticed he'd put :) at the end of certain sentences. I had no idea what that meant because at that time there were no emoticons. lol So, I'd read his sentences and guesstimate where and why he would put them at the end of certain sentences. Of course, later on I eventually found out what a colon followed by an end parenthesis meant. emoticon

Good to know, Cathy. My grandkids said their other grandmother shouts at them everytime she sends a message. When I asked how she shouts on an email or text, they said she uses an exclamation after every sentence. Lol! I never knew about those things, I also thought lol meant lots of love and couldn't understand why a male acquaintance kept saying that to me. Sounded a little strange. The things we learn.

Just a quick note to let you all know that I will be posting more tips soon. Until then, here is a quick tip that everyone should know but may not know. Typing in all capital letters is considered to be shouting. In other words, I'M SHOUTING AT YOU NOW. So, don't post a message or blog or anything in all caps if you don't intend for it to come across as shouting. emoticon Of course, if you want to post in all caps it is completely up to you.

Amy, looking back at your directions, I think I just had a mental block. I followed them today and it worked! Getting to know me, you'll all find I ask a dozen tech questions. My family laughs at how each one can explain something to me, but it takes going through all of them before it finally sinks in. I am trying to be more persistent with trying to figure something out instead of giving up so fast. I'm also working to figure things out on my own before asking for help the minute I have a problem. I so appreciate your patience and the help you all give me. Cathy, I have a feeling that you are going to be swamped with questions if it gets out to everyone on Spark that you offer tech help.

Okay, ladies, so I tried some things out on the iPad and looked some things up on Google.

1) You cannot get to the teams from the app on the iPad. You can track your nutrition, exercise, water, etc. but you cannot get to the teams from the app (i.e. you can't tap the icon that says SP).

2) If you are using the iPad to get on SP. You have to use the Safari Browser to get to the teams.

3) Copy (like taking a photograph of what you want) and paste (like gluing the photograph where you want it)

For example: You want to copy the address (think of a post office box) of where your blog is. You want people to know where to find your blog exactly. So, when you are on the iPad and you have your blog written. Then when you are in the thread for your Buddy Support Group team and you want to post a link (you want to tell people where exactly to find your blog) to your blog. You have to press the button that says "Add a Link". You'll see a new tab that has an area where you paste the link to your blog. Go back to your blog and up at the very top you'll see that it says sparkpeople.com. Tap that with your finger you'll see the long address of where your blog is press and hold for a few seconds. Then you'll see that it gives you a few options.....Select, Select All, Paste. Tap the Select All. Next, you go back to the tab that has a long rectangular area above the button that says "Add Link". Tap inside of the rectangle. Then you'll put your finger in the area again and hold for a few seconds until a little thing pops up that says "Paste". Tap the Paste then press the button that says Add Link. Voila! There is your link.

Let me know if this makes sense or not. I can post some pics if you need me to.

I was really excited when I saw this "how to" page. A lot of my difficulty on the computer is lack of technical know how. The terms you have posted are still all Greek to me but it's a start. I only have a MAC and an iPad.

Carhy, I have an iPad and regardless of what I've tried, I haven't been able to post a link. Is there a way you could post pictures, like you did in your last post, so I can see what step I'm missing? I've tried all the suggestions that I've been given. Link will transfer, but isn't blue, so you can't get to it.

First tip, to copy and paste an entire page you hold down CTRL then press A. That will highlight an entire page. For example, you typed something up in Wordpad or Notepad and you want to copy everything you typed into a post here on SP or a blog or whatever. Make sure you are in Wordpad or Notepad where you have typed something up. Press CTRL and A together that highlights everything you typed up. Then press CTRL and C......this copies everything you have typed. To paste what you've copied into a post or blog press CTRL and V. Voila! You have pasted what you typed up in Wordpad or Notepad.

Here's an example of a page that you would highlight.

CTRL and A highlights the entire page
CTRL and C copies everything that is highlighted
CTRL and V pastes what you've copied

Similarly, you can highlight just part of something you typed up then just copy and paste wherever you want to paste what you've copied.

I don't know how to do this on a Mac but if you need me to, I can find out.

I hope this was helpful to you. If you don't understand something just let me know. emoticon

Hello everyone! I will be posting some tips on how to do certain things that might come in handy here on SP. Some of these tips are things like how to cut, copy, paste, copy an entire page, add an image to your blog, and many other things. I won't be doing this all at once or even every day but when time permits. emoticon emoticon emoticon
