Yesterday was busy, with my son having a band party, and I never did nap (something I have been doing since my surgery on Aug 2) - instead - I slept til nearly noon! Yikes. So, my hubby and I went out to do a final check on the yard post party and pre hurricane, and my son and his friends did an awesome job cleaning up, and putting the big stuff away. We just had a few little things to pick up that I am sure only got missed due to the darkness last night. I am really proud of him.
So, I have gone up and down the front and back house steps three or four times each! I am walked out. I did about 5 minutes of my back stretches this morning (before I fell back to sleep).
I KNOW that within a month, my motion, movement, strength, activity, ability, flexibility, etc. will be even better than it is now - one baby step at a time.
Stay safe with Irene coming.

Just an all around crap day after another sleepless night.
Get to the store, boot up my computer, try to do my daily reports and fsssst - my all in one printer fritzes. 2 hours troubleshooting later I call tech support where one always has a language barrier. Another hour later and it turns out the printer is kaput and we have to buy a new one. The dang thing is only 14 months old!!!! Oh, but they kindly offered 25% off a replacement. Bite me!
So today was the last day of one of the part timers at the store. She is a beacon of sunshine to our day and such a quick study. She made my job so much easier because she trained so quickly. We had a nice lunch catered by my hubby (thin crust spinach pizzas and salad) but I am feeling a little out of sorts because we are looking for a replacement and not having any luck so far.
So now I am way behind in my work, do not have any prospects for Amanda's replacement and I've got to research and purchase a new all in one.
Oh well, at least it is the weekend and I will deal with it on Monday.
Have a great weekend everyone. I'll spend it mowing lawns, working in gardens and generally being outdoors where I really love to be.

Happy Friday everyone. I wish for you good and safe weather so you can enjoy an outdoor activity.

I have to give a shout out to SHOSHANA192. I was standing in shoes very similar to yours when I joined Spark. It looks like you are starting your journey, which can be scary and overwhelming. Be sure to give yourself realistic and attainable goals along the way and don't be afraid to reward yourself when you reach them. As mothers we are living with the instinct to focus on the family and put ourselves last on the list. Time to move YOU up your list to give yourself the focus you need and deserve. Take it day by day - that is what I had to do. You WILL survive the bumps along the path and you WILL see that healthier you if you have faith and stay the course!

SHOSHANA192 ~ May I suggest smaller goals? Maybe something like walk 10 minutes today, eat two fruits &/or veggies today? Start with smaller goals & then as you accomplish those set some maybe for a week, then monthly, etc. Dont try to accomplish everything at once! Take baby steps!!!

DIANEGLORIA ~ You also have all of your SparkFriends! We are here to encourage you on this journey too!!

Glad to see some new & the return of some regular faces on the chat thread!

It does seem that many of us are suffering from stress & all the bad side effects of it! Maybe by chatting on a regular basis we can help reduce each others stress! We are not here to judge anyone, just encourage & maybe offer some advice along the way!

I sure hope that we get a little rain this weekend, & the temperatures dont exceed 105F. It sure would make for riding my horse more pleasurable!

I will be posting the challenges for September the first of next week! Keep your eyes open for them!

thank you Kelley, needed to hear that today

and I realized something, now that I am making a conscious effort to get off the pity pot... I am never alone, and I am not all I have... I have God with me always, even when I am unaware

Perseverence is something I consider very important part of my determination. I will always come back swinging, anytime I am knocked down. Hopefully I will not stay down as long as I have in the past, and by getting up and getting busy I can succeed.

I am responsible today. And I am accountable here, even if I have no one else in my life to be so, do so with.

The important thing to remember, I am tracking my food. I am being honest as I can be. I can see trends and see where and when I need to improve things. I am looking for motivation since I tend to drop that battan a lot. So I read here, and find it here on Spark People.

Feeling very blessed,
Di

Hello everyone,
It sounds like most of us are facing some sort of stress in our lives. For me stress means stick a bunch of food in my mouth and lay in the fetal position. Not literally but you get my drift. I'm trying to focus on one day and not the big picture with my weight. If I start thinking of wanting to lose 60-80 pounds I become MORE stressed and eat MORE! I hope all of you find some sort of peace and solutions to the problems you are facing. I hope we can all deal with our stress without food. Please have a great day and remember you aren't alone.
xoxo

Hey there everyone,

I am tracking my food and finally learned how to track the exercise, though not everything I do is on there, but at least it shows I am not doing absolutely nothing.

Though I am very determined to succeed, my motivation wanes when I think about how much I have lost these last few months. Literally everything I held dear, the only thing I have left is me, which is something. I know wallowing is not helpful for motivation, but getting into action is the solution. Difficult though when in a whole new place, with no new friends... feels like I lost all my contacts in the break up, she got them in the breakup and I have respected those boundaries.

So how to rebuild a life from scratch. I know that just getting a job is paramount, but I also have to get my knees replaced so I can function, be mobile. Though I know many a person in wheelchairs that are productive and fully functioning, present and participating in life. Now for creating a new foundation to build upon. Truly working from home would be the best solution for me, but I know most of those things are scams.

So today, I am heading to therapy, process some of this with her. And hopefully find a battle plan I can manage today.

Detemined to succeed, one way or another,
Di

Well after about 3mos of doing nothing I started back on my journey to a better and healthier lifestyle as of yesterday! I must say I have done really well with my eating and my workouts for the last 2 days and I even ran for a whole 2 minutes on the treadmill today, tomorrow I am gonna go for 3minutes and my intentions are to be up to 5 full minutes by time Monday rolls around. I am determined to become a runner/jogger I guess you could say. I really want to experience that EUPHORIA that most runners talk about and the extra calories that it burns are a plus of course!!!!! emoticon

Hi! I am taking the advice from Patricia's email to come over to the chatroom. I have always loved this team, but I apologize for not being active recently. I would like to get to know people better in the chatrooms.

I have recently been busy preparing my classroom to go back to school. I don't start till next Tuesday and my second graders' first day isn't till the following Tuesday, after Labor Day, so the rest of this week is my last "hurrah" so to speak before I get really busy working full time again. I just got back from going to the movies to see "The Help" with two friends. It was excellent. Now I want to read the book again.

I am pleased that I haven't gained weight over the summer. Originally I thought I could lose more during my vacation by being more active, but my food intake is not as good as when I'm working. I still have to lose 20 more pounds till goal, and I hope to get there this winter sometime. Now the challenge will be to keep up the exercise once I go back.

I got up this morning to take my usual walk around the development here (almost 3 miles with lots of hills) and since my walking buddy couldn't go early, I went alone and decided to try to do walk/job intervals for the first time. I did pretty well and was able to cut off ten minutes off my usual time walking. I can't say I loved it, but it was nice to get my heart pumping more, and the weather was the best (around 60) so I didn't sweat too much.

I will be back later after I read the latest messages from everyone, so I can do some responding. I hope everyone had a wonderful Wednesday! emoticon

I am ok. I am home from the therapy. I am needing to get a lace up ankle brace with lateral support. I will be wearing it all the time. I do not know why, but even though I am spraining my left ankle more this ankle has more movement then what there should be and the right one even has more than that. I may need an MRI and some surgy in order to tighting either the ligament or tendent.

Crap. ONICAM. I guess I didn't realize you had all those allergies. I don't know a lot about working around food allergies. No more, really, than the gluten-free and "speciality" stuff I see in the health food aisles at stores.

Well, I need to celebrate! I was 129.8 today at my official weigh-in! I officially hit my first set goal a week early! Hopefully I won't gain from my party weekend! I am so excited. I haven't been in the 120s since sometime in early HS, I think. I really just can't believe it. I honestly can't believe I didn't do this sooner. It's not always easy, but it's not nearly as hard as I'd made myself believe it would be.

I like Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches but I haven't found ANYTHING you can eat,Omicam. I have been on vacation this summer. I plan to reorganize my life this next week! I have lost weight and am feeling so much better. Yesterday I started to clean my closet by taking out clothes that are too big! Now, I need to find boxes and finish that job. Thanks Spark buddies for being here! I really appreciate your positive huddle comments. I have been reading all the great ones in my mail box!

I have not seen anything from that company. Do they have anything that is chocolate, peanut, beet, wheat, dairy, shellfish, potato, and coffee free? I am allergic to all of those.

ONICAM - Have you tried Skinny Cow stuff/ They have yummy single serve ice creams & bars as well as a new ine of candies. If you can just stop at one, that would be better than a mini-snickers! I know it's important to try to understand why we have cravings or why we eat (when it's not just hunger), but, first, I do think it's important to have something that's a better alternative so if we can't control those times, we're eating that instead of 1000 calories of candy abrs!

I felt the earthquake. In Indiana! (My desk shook, my Dwight K. Schrute bobblehead bobbed, and I felt a bit dizzy. A co-worker said he felt the same way.)

So, I weighed myself this morning, and I was at 130! But I was 131 yesterday, so I'm not calling it "hitting my goal" just yet. Tomorrow is my official weigh-in day. I'm also starting to develop strategies for handling my weekend this weekend. I'll be going to a pool party/pot luck/cookout at my parents' on Saturday, then dinner for my BiL's birthday at a sports bar type place, then Sunday, our work cookout/potluck! I'm going to let myself have a few "treats", I think, at my parents' and try to be really good the other two places. We'll see! I'm just sooooooooo excited to be so close to my first goal! I don't want to derail it.

I know that I do not always eat the right things. I have a sweet addiction, compulsive eater, and an emotional eater. I am not quite sure how to understand my body. I must have my med right now which means even more food. I cannot say one way or another on how and what I am going to eat, but I did have a 5.9 magnitude earthquake here. I live in Baltimore, MD. On the news it sad that the dogs could sense it before hand and was going off, but not one of the 3 in this house went off at all. We never had an earthquake of this magnitude before.

Good morning everyone.

ONICAM - have you spent some time thinking about WHY you are eating? I know it sounds like an easy task, but it isn't. I spent a good portion of my journey learning about myself and my body cues. I can tell now if I am reaching for something because I am genuinely hungry, or perhaps lonely or bored. I tend to find myself doing that robotic arm to mouth thing when I am bored and trying to pass the time. I am also incredibly weak when it comes to sweets. The hard reality is that I just cannot have them around. IF I *know* there is ice cream in the freezer, my super sneaky brain will justify to my conscious that it is okay to have some. Just one cookie couldn't hurt - right? Well one was small so another cookie is okay... The other thing that I absolutely swear by is water. When I am feeling snacky, I drink water very intentionally. Then if I am truly hungry, the feeling will subside for a short time. If it returns in 20 minutes, then I really am hungry. If the feeling does not go away, then it is mental/emotional and not physical. I know you did not ask for my rambling, but thought I would bore you regardless.

emoticon

REBELREBEL1 - I agree about the craving. As an example, I am not particulariy fond of red meat. It does not agree with my stomach often times. Every once in a while, there is some deep driving NEED for a steak. I don't want it for the flavor, that is for sure. I certainly don't want the stomach upset. I have found that my body NEEDS the protein and iron in it. Now when I swear I want a bloody slab of cow, I have some spinach for the iron and a protein smoothy for that. My body gets what it needs and is happy, while I avoid the intestional displeasure the cow brings. Perhaps if you are craving the ice cream or sweets, you can divert your sweet tooth by some other sweet item. I adore Trident Tropical Twist gum. It is super sweet so that is my default when I want a sugary soda or candy. I have chewed nothing for the past 95lbs and it seems to work.

Hello LKMEDAL - glad you could join us.

PATRICIA - thanks for the spark mail reminder to get my tush over here and run at the mouth. I forgot how much I like the boards when I am not posting daily!

Have you refilled your water bottle recently?

ONICAM ~ Sorry you are having so many problems controlling your eating . . . maybe you are not eating the right things . . . .

REBELREBEL1 ~ I was listening to a podcast yesterday that stated your body doesnt crave certain foods, like ice cream, candies, etc., your body is craving something inside that food!

LUNADRAGON ~ Sounds like your final surgery went well. Glad to see that you are up & moving!

My last (and third) surgery was August 2 - lumbar back - L4-5 laminectemy and fusion. My staples were removed last Thursday (22 of them - could have been a zipper!)
I have lost 1 lb since early June - I am drinking my water, eating healthy and smaller portions, healthy snacking, beginning to walk again, and doing my short 10 minutes of daily doctor sanctioned light physical therapy home exercise til I start official physical therapy in Sept.
I am determined, I am accountable, and that hasn't stopped, I am just on a slower track than most.

I hear you about the candy. Ive been eating a lot of ice cream lately. For some reason cant get enough of it here lately, been really irritated and needed something to make me feel better and since I recently quit smoking I figure its better than a cigarette.

I am having problems controling my eating. I have gone for 8.5 servings of candies after a breakfast bar and still wants more food. I have been getting a little bit done at the house. I have more to do, but I am also needing to get my school books read. I fell asleep and I am starting PT tomorrow.

Dang where is everybody at??

We have 14,008 members this morning & only a handful chatting! Come on ladies & gents! This is a great way to share your struggles, successes, etc!!!

I actually got in some riding time yesterday afternoon! Even though when I saddled up it was thundering, but that wasn't going to stop me! I HAD to ride. I rode down the road & when I got back home it was sprinkling, I continued to ride & it eventually stopped. We sure need the rain so I'm not going to complain at all!!! I will do it again today, just hoping that will make it rain, LOL!!

I sure would like some feedback on my blog that I posted yesterday if you get a chance!

Ya'll have an awesome day!!

Daily Motivational Thoughts:

Despise not small things, either for evil or good, for a look may work thy ruin, or a word create thy wealth. A spark is a little thing, yet may kindle the world. ~ Martin Farquhar Tupper

I have learned, as a rule of thumb, never to ask whether you can do something. Say, instead, that you are doing it. Then fasten your seat belt. The most remarkable things follow. ~ Julia Cameron

When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less & less important whether I am afraid. ~ Audre Lorde

It has been my philosophy of life that difficulties vanish when faced boldly. ~ Isaac Asimov

Born today, August 22, you are not ruled by timidity or shyness, but there are situations in which you need to take a little time to get used to the fact that you are in the spotlight. You are certainly not one to crave or seek out that kind of attention, even though it is likely to shine on you throughout your lifetime. There are those who look upon what you are able to do as a kind of magic, but you know that it is merely a job, one that you do remarkably well, and in a style that is all your own. Still, you certainly appreciate the praise and admiration that you get simply by doing what you enjoy.

You are able to be quite disciplined, especially when it comes to planning and preparing a project. You will find yourself at sea if you are not allowed suitable prep time. You are often able to take a good idea and make it better.

Be sure to let us know when your birthday is so we can celebrate it with you! Just click on this link?

I am my own worst enemy.

I've let myself go.

Even though I walk to work and do strength fitness 5 days a week, I'm getting soft and out of shape. Partly due to my desk job. I've always had a active jobs, mostly on my feet but this admin desk job is a very welcome change at this stage in my life.
BUT . . .

I could cut myself some slack because of the multitude of health issues this year but I hate using what I consider to be excuses. I spent the better part of 6 hours outside mowing, digging, cleaning and am now completely exhausted. Partly due to fitness - or lack of it - partly due to still recovering from the latest infection and antibiotic allergic reaction and partly due to the aging factor. Why is it our minds still think we're 32 when we are 52?

So after labor day I am going to get serious once again. Geez, I sound like a broken record, but starting over again and again is still better than giving up all together.

I will be counting on my fabulous teammies to keep me Accountable as I renew my Determination. Who's coming along for the ride?

I love motivational quotes. I have a small flip book of sorts with positive self-talk messages and quotes that I look at daily. Thank you for posting them.

So my challenge today is a lingering hamstring strain. This is really messing with my attempts to become a runner. Yes, I am only walking so that it has a chance to rest and heal. I am not even sure what I did. There was no pop or rip or moment I cried "ouch." I just sort of woke up with it one day about a week ago.

I am volunteering at 5am tomorrow at a local Tri event. My daughter's youth group works the registration, body markings, snack booth, and t-shirt giveaways. Before I would avoid signing up for this chaparone gig, given the early hour. Now I find it something I look forward to - just to be around the healthy folks and chat with them.

So, bed early tonight for me since 5am will come earlier than I want.

Hope you all have a fantastic Friday!

Patricia - I hope the rains take a southernly dive and sprinkle some showers on your neck of the woods. We had the hot hot hot weather but then got a break the past week or two. Yesterday it got hot again but not near as bad as before - 93 instead of 103.

ONICAM - hope that your ankle is better. Happy reading.

Hope that everyone has a great weekend.

It's FRIDAY!!! Not sure why I am so excited, it's too blasted hot to do anything but sit on my rear and watch TV! Oh well, at least I can do that & not sit behind my desk at work all day!

We actually got a small shower yesterday! Now if we can just get another one & another one & another one, we might actually get the hay to grow! Keep those prayers coming for those of us in Texas, we haven't had a drought like this since 1956!!!

Here are some motivational thoughts for today:

Luck? I dont know anything about luck. Ive never banked on it & Im afraid of people who do. Luck to me is something else: hard work & realizing what is opportunity & what isnt. ~ Lucille Ball

Without passion man is a mere latent force & possibility, like the flint which awaits the shock of the iron before it can give forth its spark. ~ Henri Frederic Amiel

Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them. ~ John Updike

It is common sense to take a method & try it. If it fails, admit it frankly & try another. But above all, try something. ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

I guess I will just talk to myself! I would have thought with over 14,000 members more than 5 or 6 people would chat!

It's hot here, it has been over 100 degrees every day since June! Sure makes it hard to do anything outside! It's all I can do to feed the horses in the afternoon. When I finish I am soaked to the bone!

We have 17 people participating in the August Determination Challenge! Out of over 14,000 members that's not even 1%!!!

Oh well, I will continue to host the challenges as long as people are participating!

Ya'll have a wonderful afternoon!

I would like to ask all of ya'll to pray for rain for Texas! We are in a severe drought! We have had temperatures over 102 since June with NO break!

Many people are starting to loose their livestock due to this drought; many horses are being surrendered to shelters, and cows being sold.

The terrain here looks like it has been scorched, and speaking of scorched, many fires have happen due to stupid people burning their trash, or throwing cigarettes out their windows! Even though most if not all of Texas is under a burn ban!

We really need rain . . . .

Thanks

REALITY

Born today, August 18, you have a kind of daring that is rare even among Leo natives -- a sign known for its up front, daring and even aggressive nature. What sets you apart, primarily, is our intellectual ability; you are not only willing to face any challenge head-on but you are able to do it with a great deal of understanding, employing the kind of tactics and strategies that put you head and shoulders above the competition. You are also an original thinker, able to take what has gone before and change it, improve it and mold it into something that will work better for you in your situation.

Despite this remarkable brainpower, you are also quite an emotional individual, and there are times in which your passions will actually get the better of you. Take care. You may actually get into more than your share of serious trouble if this happens in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Todays Leo Horoscope: It may fall to you to do something rather unpopular; you have what it takes to do it, but it may be hard to weather the coming criticism.

Be sure to let us know when your birthday is so we can celebrate it with you! Just click on this link?

ONICAM - hope everything turns out okay. Ankles are one of those things that can really screw you up if they don't heal right. My wife had to have surgery on hers because she repeatedly hurt it without proper healing. Wellness thougts to you...

Born today, August 17, you have a certain personal power that is undeniable and unavoidable; those within your orbit know it well -- and those outside your immediate sphere of influence are likely to be aware of it, even if they are not directly affected by it. You have what it takes to be a mover and shaker in the affairs of others, and fortunately you have a good head on your shoulders and can understand the intricacies of so many modern issues that are important to those around you. Your sensibilities are solid, your views well founded and popular, and your ability to touch others is always a major factor in your daily life.

There is a kind of rough-and-tumble aspect to your nature -- and women born on this date are likely to be just as able to fight for what they want as any man, and often better. Though there are times when you prefer to be alone, you are not the kind to indulge in silent brooding.

Todays Leo Horoscope: Cast your mind back and you'll hit upon something long forgotten but that still has an important impact on your daily life.
