Happy holidays everyone.

Had heel pain the morning after my 8 mike run. Sure seems like plantar fasciitis. Not sure what that means in terms of running or signing up for races.

Catherine hope you feel better soon

Happy Birthday to Lynn and Cindy and Happy Holidays to all!

After two days of my feeling somewhere in between sick and well, last night the arrow settled firmly on the sick side -- my cough got a lot worse and woke me up / kept me up part of the night. Not as bad as my last bout of bronchitis this past September, but I decided I needed pharmaceutical help to keep this infection from dragging on and on and on.

I consider it an early Christmas gift that I was actually able to get an appointment today just before the holidays. I had to go to a different clinic and see an unfamiliar doctor, but I was able to get some antibiotics and already, just a few hours later, I feel noticeably better.

DH made the appointment for me early this morning, and after doing so, he opened the newspaper and brought me the front page with the following lead story: "Flu season early, hits at 'full force': ERs, clinics filling up; medication demand high; flu shots urged." The story continues: "Flu season is setting in early, and the sickness is spreading quickly, more than doubling the number of patients heading to several Austin hospitals and clinics in just one week."

So I am indeed blessed to be able to see a doctor and also to not have the flu! Just a respiratory infection. Get those flu shots!

Merry Christmas Eve, Runners. . . Happy Post Hanukkah to others . . .

Saw a good friend of mine last night and like me, she has slacked off on the swim, bike, run routine. We encouraged one another by somewhat planning our road back into it by #1: Gearing up to sign up for my next HM together (it's in early May) and #2: Getting out the door for a run and/or into the computraining class this holiday break. Always great to have friends with similar interests. She bought me a birthday cake from "Nothing But Bundt Cake". It's a chain, but not sure where they are all at. DELICIOUS... Their Bundt cakes are made from REAL ingredients. Not saying they are healthy for you...LOL...But they are delicious cakes!

Enjoy your festivities. . .

Lynn

I'm doing some last minute running around then relax time! D & I are going out for our traditional Christmas Eve Dinner at Beachcomber in Clearwater Beach. We usually split a dinner as their portions are so huge! We always do an after-dinner walk on the beach! Christmas is good in Paradise!

[needs to get a copy of the Grandparents Code!]

Still exhausted after attending a friend's wedding yesterday afternoon/evening. Danced all night. I'm thinking today will be a quiet day.

I didn't enjoy the Santa Hustle and I'm not sure why. The weather was OK, although I would have preferred it cooler. But I found the route boring. Running up and down the Seawall in Galveston is not interesting. They didn't hand out the promised candy canes. The cookies were right out of the store package. The fact that I'd run 6 miles with my group the day before may have had something to do with it, but that was the point of doing this HM. I wanted to run this on tired legs since I can't schedule any really long runs right now.

So, mission accomplished. emoticon

I was on a quest for a certain "Heartbreaker Bow" for Gianna. Toys R Us told me they would get another delivery on Sunday night. D kicked me outta bed at 5:30am, I called them they had it, and I was home by 6:15!

I also want to get this one game so we can play it with her at our house. I think we're just as excited as she is about it!

Cindy....Happy Post Birthday! Ours is just days apart! As for the weather... The Bears are in Philly right now and they said game start was 62 degrees! WOW! Balmy! Nothing anywhere near that here!

Still no running here except for running around! Had to even cancel my cycling tomorrow... MIL wants a button down bathrobe for Christmas and I can't find one outside of mall stores...So am going to have to grin and bear the mall tomorrow. Didn't want to go over the weekend! She might be out of luck. I am thinking it just doesn't exist! Hoping I have a good night's sleep so I can get up and swim at least. What a bum!

CATHERINE...Hope your flu is gone by the time you are back on here. What a bummer! Here's to good health in 2014!

Ran 8 miles with dh and the dog. It's been really warm and all that pesky ice has melted.

We went on the wisskahickon valley trail. It was pouring went we started , but let up at the end.

Pleasant birthday. Made a truly decadent turtle cheesecake with the help of 2 of my kids.

Catherine hope you are better soon

I think I'll see if I can post a few run pictures.

Good morning everyone.

I have been hit with a mild case of the flu. It came on suddenly last night -- a cough and chest congestion, aches and a fever. That explains why I was so tired towards the end of yesterdays run. Fortunately I feel no worse this morning, so I am hopeful that it will run its course quickly. But no running for me today. Too bad because it looks like it's going to be a beautiful day. I hope that Galveston is having the same weather.

I actually got out for a run this morning. Cindy, you'd be proud of me...it was sprinkling when I went out to run. I was about 0.5 miles from the end of my route and it started to flat out rain. I could have come home early, but I didn't. I finished my run in the rain!

I'm embracing the fact that I won't do a race until Jan 19, the Clearwater Halfathon. I want to be rested and as close to 100% as possible. So, today, D & I went out to breakfast finished Santa's duties for Gianna, then came home and chilled for a change!

The weather forecast for tomorrow morning in Galveston looks great, Stacie. Good luck!

It was rainy and windy over night and into the morning here in Austin, but it cleared up into a beautiful afternoon for running -- mid to upper 50's and sunny.

June, we miss you! Hope you get your internet problems resolved soon.

I took advantage of the weather to run my 10 miles outside today. The hills were definitely a challenge, but it was a great day for running.

Lots of rain today in Galveston, but we've thoroughly enjoyed the temps and lots of fresh fish! I got my tutu done, so I'm ready to hustle tomorrow. I promise to post pics.

My friends in San Antonio took us to Cowboys, a huge bar with a rodeo ring inside, on Thursday. Said I had to ride the mechanical bull, so I did. Stayed on for more than 8 seconds! Woke up yesterday with huge bruises on the insides of both thighs. Thankfully, I'm fine walking and running. Guess I can check that off my to do list. emoticon

HI Running Peeps... I have been MIA both here and on the running paths! Life during this busy holiday season has just been getting in the way. Funny thing is....Christmas Day will actually be the most low key Christmas we have ever had! But all the other huzz buzz leading up to it sure kills my routine. I can only blame so much on time..and weather. If I really wanted to, I could have hit the gym late at night, early in the AM, but I didn't. Tired...yes...but what else is new! Looking forward to forgiving myself and getting back into a routine.

Missing talking to all of you, though. Hoping those who are ill get better soon!

Happy Holidays to all and will try to get on here more often and to get back into my running routine!!!!

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and holiday season

I have not been able to get much on the internet lately, I will be glad when DS comes home and helps out with this, we did contact the server a few times with not much improvement.

I love this thread and team and miss being able to read and keep up with the latest news and achievements. Be back soon :)

Ran 5.5 miles today with Sasha. I miss my Gymboss. It's getting warm enough to try to use it again. I don't mind replacing it once a year, but don't like the fact that 25 degree days seem enough to break it. Running on the roads with ice in patches means that I've been taking it really easy. Bob and I should get a run in this weekend, but I don't know if we'll do Saturday or Sunday. Sunday we are expecting rain, but the paths maybe in better shape on by then. I went on the trail by my house for 0.25 miles and the path was not pleasant.

Dee, I'm so happy to finally get a warm front to clear away the snow that has been on the ground for almost 2 weeks and you are waiting for a cool front. emoticon

Jean, Enjoy Busch Gardens.

Catherine, I've looked into fitness places. There is a LA fitness 2 blocks from my house, but its just treadmills. Then the Y in Lower Merion closed in mid Sept. So the Y's are pretty far. Lots of smaller places with treadmills near me. But most places want joining fees. I actually think that if I'm going to drive a distance for facilities that Valley Forge National Park might be as good of an option as a fitness center. Unfortunately it was closed due the government shut down the last time a visit out there fit into my schedule well. Great job on your 8 mile marathon pace run.

Morning, all!

Nothing new here. I'm watching the weather, not sure when the 'cold' front is due in. I'm hoping in time for my race/run on Sunday. Tomorrow morning I'm accompanying one of training group runners on the last 6 miles of her 26 mile training run. I hope the stormy weather doesn't get in the way, she's been trying to do that 26 mile run for several months and there's always something to interrupt it.

DEE: The Nightowls - a great name!!! Enjoy your race.

CINDY: Finding places to run when it is icy - is not easy. Have a wonderful time with your family.

CATHERINE: Another good workout and run. WTG!!

Today DH and I are going to Busch Gardens for the last time on our 2 year pass. Supposed to be in the low 80s today. Taking his convertible.

Another very easy run on the agenda today. Probably will do half of it HR cycling up and down from 60 or 65% to 75% and then half of it running straight (or close to straight) at 75%.

Take care of yourselves and have a good day....

Cindy, I'm thinking about the YMCA in Corning where we picked up our Wineglass packets on their indoor running track. You might find something similar in your area, given the frequency of ice and snow. It's worth checking out. I don't have to worry much about ice or snow, but having a gym track to use when the weather is difficult has made all the difference to me. Plus it has the additional advantage of being close to "facilities" and allowing you to run without having to carry all your water and nutrition. Not as interesting as outside, of course, but so much better than a treadmill or than not running.

Dee, that does sound like a taping challenge!
emoticon
Steph, enjoy your holiday time off!

Striver, the MM "predicts" race pace, not long run pace -- you choose the LSD pace based on the MM (to keep you slow enough.) Jeff's point is that you hold yourself back on purpose, not that this is the fastest you "can" run a training run. Most people tend to "race" the training runs, which can be a problem if it happens a lot on really long runs. On shorter runs, it may not matter as much, depending on how well you recover from them. Most people "can" run a long run faster than 2 minutes slower than predicted race pace. The question really is -- should they. It depends.

SB, I'm glad you are getting some easy long runs on your legs.

We are having great weather this week. It really feels like spring -- it's in the low 70's right now. There is a cold front coming this weekend, but I don't think it is supposed to be too bad, with day time temps in the 50's.

Today was ST for me, followed by an 8 mile Marathon Pace Tempo run at the gym. I was tired when I finished, but I didn't slow down.

We have had 4 snow events in 10 days. And making it worse it has frequently peeked above freezing for the high and then dropped to 25 or colder, so ice has been an issue.

I knew the best way to manage this type of weather where I use to live, but things are shifted now.

I did manage almost 5 miles yesterday and we are finally having a major warm up.

I'm feeling pretty discouraged with the running, but hopefully I'll turn it around this week. My second daughter arrives home from college at about 1 today, the older one arrived on Monday. Hopefully we will have an uneventful Christmas.

I'm hoping to run Friday and Saturday.

Good decision, Monty! Recover quickly.

Steph, you're right, ribs hurt a lot. Part of my problem is identifying exactly where the pain is. Striver, I did look it up online at the KT tape site, but I have two problems: no one to help tape me up, and no idea what to do with the breast that is in the way of my taping. emoticon
Actually, it's a bit better today, so seeing the therapist was a good idea.

I taught an Israeli dance class last night that was better attended than my regular session: the Nightowls, the adults with disabilities social group at the JCC. Some folks who were reclusive four years ago (last time I visited them) were up and dancing this year. My favorite friend died last year, and I really missed her. She used to be the life of the party.

Since I would be doing some serious party batch cooking, I spoke to our run tribe leaders. They decided to quarantine my house and go bar crawling in Downtown Dunedin instead!

Woke up this morning with a very rough voice! Gonna keep it on the down low today! Eating healthy, drinking tea, and doing EmergenC shooters! (Did you know..there were 12 flavors of the original formula?)

Almost afternoon in my world...... :)

DEE: A training run race..... good for you. Glad your rib is feeling better!!!

WILEE323: Excited for you!!!!

STEPH: "More" staying on track vibes coming your way........ emoticon

MONTY: You cannot be sick.... you have to host a big party!!!!

STRIVER: I agree, it is hard to accept and work with one's natural abilities sometimes when our expectations want us to be able to do so much more.

AFM....

Nice two days with brother in law and his wife.

Got out early today for a longer slow run.
13.1 miles
Average HR was 72%.
Average pace was much slower than the recommended training pace for me. But that was okay for today.

Great weather for running - 53 degrees and 84% humidity. I actually wore thin gloves for the first 6 or 7 miles.

Feel better, Monty.
and Dee. did you check the videos on the KT site?
good going, Steph and good luck Stacie!

dragged myself out and ran 5 miles this afternoon. very gray, 50. did another crummy magic mile: 12:05 (the 3 of them are within 5 seconds of each other, so probably accurate. except that my long runs are better than this forecasts). i wanted to quit from about a minute after i started, so i guess finishing it counts as an accomplishment. DH on vacation starting sunday for 2 weeks, so no more 6:30 alarms so maybe i'll catch up on some sleep again.
have a good week!

Steph, it sounds like you are getting back on track with your exercise! Well done!

My knee will be fine to run, the issue right now is the ribs. Seeing the physical therapist helped, but while the pain is reduced, it's still there. And yes, I danced the night away, Monty, but only because I had to run my class. It hurt a bit when things got more aerobic, but when I toned it down, I could manage. Does anyone know how to KT tape one's rib cage?

HI everyone,

had a good workout in the gym. Did 20min run / walk on the treadmill and averaged 9.6km/h, not bad! I did 2min:1min intervals, so I must have been running quite fast.

Also did 15min bike & 10 min stair master and thenST

Dee,
hope that knee will be recovered enough for the race. You are one busy Lady!

Stacie,
make sure you take a picture of yourself in the that Tutu (if it gets ready)

SB,
the good news is that the Doctors scale showed 3kg less than my own (but still much higher than I should be), even though I was weighed in clothes there. Maybe my scale does have a problem. I had bought a new one and from then on it showed higher weight. BF seemed to have the same on the new scale and on the other he used to weigh himself on, but hadn't weighed in months. I tried out with a 20l Jerry can, that showed exactly the weight I expected, so I thought it should be ok, but maybe the error starts in higher ranges. Well am not sure yet if it is an error, but will check on a different scale to confirm.

MB:
Have you seen Monty in his pink Tutu? Check his pictures. I am sure he is in touch with his pink side of life while being 100% male.... LOL
You are planning a HM in Asheville, NC, I lived 3 hours from there in Robbinsville some 23 years ago.

It tends to be windy in Galveston, though, so it could be deceptive. I think being ready for anything is the way to go. emoticon

I signed up for that race at the last minute: only way I can get in a longer run, as my group is doing shorter runs at the moment. I have a wedding to go to that afternoon, so I'll zip in and out of Galveston.

Just back from the therapist and feeling better. Let's hope it stays this way.

Stacie, be sure to wear a hat or visor and bring sun screen. The sun down here can burn you even in the winter. I think you will find that 60 degrees will feel warm if it is sunny and also if it is humid. Have fun!

I'll get a quick 45 minute run in on the treadmill after work today, then home to pack. Race time temps are forecast around 60 degrees. For me, that means shorts and a sleeveless top, but I'll be bringing capris, a short sleeve shirt, and a pullover to cover all the bases. It remains to be seen if I'll get a Christmas tutu completed tonight to wear also. I thought it would add to the festive spirit of the race, but may be hard to fit in the suitcase!

My jeans are feeling snug - a sure sign that I've been indulging in the holiday spirit too much. It will be good to get back in a lifting, running, and cross training routine once we get home.

Have a terrific day all!!

Stacie

Striver, sorry to hear your daughter didn't get in this time. As they say in Israel, savlanut! (Patience!)

I managed to get in 3 miles yesterday, but the last two were dicey: it's dark, drivers are racing home through the subdivision and sidewalks are treacherous. My rib continues to hurt, so I've broken down and decided to see the physical therapist during my workday today. Yea, I have this belief that I should do it on my own time, but this time it's not possible.

SB, enjoy the visiting!

emoticon Good Morning!!!

MB: Good to have an indoor track that you can use on days that it is tougher to get outside.

STRIVER: Sorry to hear your daughter did not get into any of the conservatories. As you say.... there is next year. Good job on the longer run!!

MONTY: Be careful so you can run strong!!!

*****

Taking a rest day today because tomorrow is a longer run. I usually do long runs every other Monday, but had to switch around my runs this week. I think I am using it as an excuse to not do any ST. Maybe I will do a little of the Iron-strength workout at home and not bike to the Y.

Heading the the beach on this chilly FL day. Spend some time with DH's brother and his wife.

I survived the Holiday Half & had fun with it, minimal DOMS but still left my KT on. It works great for recovery even going through the post race shower! My CW-X long compression pants helped me through as well! Once again, it was a learning experience!

Now, I have to do rest & recovery as I have the Clearwater Halfathon on Jan 19. That's the 2013 race where I injured myself, did 2 months of PT and became a better runner out of it.

sorry about your fall, Dee.
things have been extremely hectic. basically didn't run last week did the 800s on sunday and almost 5 miles on saturday. so i planned today as a short long run a cutback long run to match my cutback week. so i did 10 miles this afternoon (52, blue sky) and it was really quite nice. slowish, especially over the mile of cobblestones, 30/30, and then for miles 6.85 to 9, 60/30 (which is what i'm running the 800s at). mile 10 back towards home at 5 was full of traffic lights and pedestrians and very slow.
1 14:13
2 14:16
3 13:53
4 15:02 (cobblestones)
5 13:07
6 13:00
7 14:04
8 12:43 (60/30)
9 13:26 (more tired 60/30)
10 15:53 (streets to cross, lights, and pedestrians)
3 for enjoyment.
DD did not get into any of the conservatories for next year it was always a long shot, and it was a good experience, and she's taking it well and will continue to focus on music and try again next year. i'm very proud of her.

dee, sorry to hear about your tumble. try an easy yoga video for a couple of days, especially child pose. feel better soon.

i just googled KT tape. very interesting. i am glad to hear you took it easy īn your race, Monty. Real men don't have a problem with pink. kudos to you for not letting it get in your way as many would.

envy all of you that are getting NICE warm and sunny weather. i have been XT indoors, and walking at an indoor track. Sunday is my official day to start training in earnest for my HM in March. I am having a hard time getting motivated since 30degrees and wet are my threshhold of an uncomfortable run.

Way to go, Catherine!

SB, enjoy your HR run.

My knee is OK, the rib is not. My physical therapist is tied up this week so I'm not sure what I'll do. I so hate chiropractors, though I suspect one could help.

Yay for pink, Monty!

DEE: How is your rib and knee? Must have been quite a tumble.

MONTY: Glad to hear you were able to participate in that HM!!!

CATHERINE: Very good job on this week's runs.

STEPH: Sending you "staying on track" vibes......

Unexpected company coming today and tomorrow. One of DH's brother's and his wife. More than planned eating and drinking maybe. They are coming to our home today (they have never been here since we moved) and then we will be going to the beach tomorrow.

Running this morning using HR cycling.
Taking it easy for another week or so.
Then some faster runs before my next HM.
