It seems to be one of those things that each person has to find what works for him/her.

Hubby follows a low-carb, fairly high protein diet. But fasting can throw his levels right off - even just if "overnight" lasts longer than usual!

I'm just below the level for being called pre-diabetic.
But I need to tke in more carbs than hubby, otherwise I can't last from one meal to the next.

Hi everyone! A quick hello. I see that you are discussing diabetes...I have been watching a lot of YouTube videos the past few days about Intermittent Fasting, by a doctor called Dr. Jason Fung, who wrote a book called The Diabetes Code. He is a nephrologist from Canada, and has been treating diabetic patients with intermittent fasting, to reduce their insulin levels. There are many, many YouTube videos where he explains this (there is also a SparkTeam for his supporters, that I just joined). I also was reading about low carb, high fat diets (like the keto diets), as a way to control insulin levels and improve A1C levels. I don't know if I could cut carbs enough to be keto, but I'm thinking of combining the low carb and intermittent fasting to see if it helps me with weight loss and lowering my A1c. Anyway...just some things to look into if you are interested. Their basic idea is that high fat isn't a problem with diabetes or weight loss, only high carb is the issue. And if you fast (eating no calories...only drinking water or black coffee or tea), your insulin levels go down. So you try to fast for 12 hours, or 16 hours, for example, a few days a week. Or you can fast for 24 or 36 hours, if you build up to that long (but if you are on insulin, you need to work with a doctor, since you will have to cut insulin if you aren't eating). But the fasting will help heal the insulin resistance. I'm not good at explaining it, but the videos are Anyway..just some ideas.

Sorry to hear you have had a stroke Christine. Thank goodness you seem to be making a reasonable recovery. Well done for trying to learn Polish too. They say learning a foreign language is good exercise for the brain too so that should help your recovery too. You must be pleased to have lost some weight since the summer too and although you are pre-diabetic you do have an opportunity to improve your sugar levels.

My husband has been diabetic for over 10 years now Michele. He's had a number of other problems to contend with too so at present I think he is satisfied with my attempts to keep us eating a generally healthy diet. We've doing this for the last five years and I have managed to lose around 3 stone in that time. His weight fluctuates a lot but as I'm the main cook I see he is eating reasonably sensibly, lol. I mentioned the Paleo Diet to him and he has promised to check it out but whether he decides to try it out could be another story entirely.

I've started to learn Polish!

You may remember that my older son married a Polish girl, a few years ago.
Her mother died very suddenly, very tragically towards the end of last year.

A friend of mine mentioned several months ago that she has started to learn Portuguese through a free app on her phone.
I accessed the site from my laptop, and discovered that they do offer a Polish course. So I decided to make a start - this'll be daughter-in-love's Christmas present!!!!

And perhaps very timely too.
They went over to Poland to spend a few weeks with her dad last Christmas. But they're hoping that he'll come to them this year. He's only been to Britain once before - with his wife, for the kids' wedding.
The mum spoke very good English, but wasn't confident in it. So she and we conversed in German.
The father speaks Polish, and only odd words of English.

So, hopefully, by the end of the year, I'll be able to have at least a very simplistic conversation with him . . .
I've been at it for 7 weeks now - oh, did I mention all the headaches I've been having? LOL!

My hubby also, type 2.
He went back on the Cambridge diet (was on and off with it a few years ago) and lost enough weight to make a big difference to his various numbers, and therefore reduce his meds.

Hubby had also got it into his head that I was probably type 2 as well - though I hadn't been to the doctor about it.
However, while I was in hospital with my stroke, mid-June, they tested my blood sugar several times a day. And it's been tested a few times since.
I am happy to say that I am not diabetic - though my numbers were up towards pre-diabetes.
I have lost almost a stone since mid-June, and am continuing to lose, slowly and steadily.

Thanks for the info Michele. I don't know if that would work for my husband but I shall certainly tell him about it as he hates having to inject twice a day.

From 1991 to 2017 I was Insulin Dependent. However when I started reading about the Hunter Gather or Paleo Life Style everything began to change. For me of this information would have reversed my Type 2 back in the 90s if the info was available here in the States. Recently stated using a continuous glucose monitoring device. I'm hopeful that 2018 will be the last of Diabetic medications.

At the same time I have my energy back as well as motivation for exploring the unknown. So far the 70s is full of surprises for me.

Have a Healthy and Prosperous Week! emoticon

How wonderful to be able to reduce the amount of medication required for your diabetes. I know how much of a bind taking medication regularly can be as my husband has insulin dependent diabetes and he hates it.

Summer seems to be winding down around. Feels like Fall just maybe early this year. This last week has been humid during during the day and cool during the evening hours. Can't forget the added rains through out the days and nighttime hours. School will be starting this coming week, therefore, football is in the future.

Health changes for me this Summer. Insulin dosage for Diabetes have been getting small than the start of 2018. Have been Type 2 Diabetic since 1976 and since last November have been studying current changes especially in diet and medication for the last 8 months. Loving every minute of the changes.

Stay Safe!

I had heard Portland was getting temps near the 100 mark and I know we would hate that too. Where I live in Scotland a heatwave is when we get temps in the 80s and as the saying goes, these are as rare as hens teeth. This week we've had lovely weather, in the low 70s. This is a great summer for us and I know it sounds pretty pathetic compared to other places that always have those sort of temps. Last year I don't think it got into the 70s all summer, lol. I hope you feel better soon Auna Vista. That medical problem you had is extremely unpleasant.

It's been really hot this summer in Portland, Oregon. We've had more days in the nineties than we've ever had before. And we don't have air conditioning at my house. I have my room on the second floor and it's been in the mid-to-high eighties at night, so I've started staying up all night with the front door open, to the screen door, and I sleep during the day. I was away so long, because I started hearing music all the time and voices too after a while. I needed a sort of media break, so I skipped all of my teams. But I'm feeling a lot better now. I'm taking the summer off from trying to lose weight. That had been my main stressor, I think. Now it's the heat, though! So hot! Don't wish for a heat wave, you'll be sorry if it should come. It hasn't rained in so many days. I am really wishing it would rain again.

Court, I am so glad you've got some good news! emoticon emoticon

Apparently the UK is having another heatwave this week. Bad news is it is not supposed to reach Scotland. Don't know whether to be glad we will avoid scorching temperatures or disappointed there is not a great deal of sunshine. At least if it stays dry I will be able to get into the garden to do a bit more tidying up.

Hope everyone is having a lovely healthy summer.

That must be a big relief Court. I'm glad it went well.

We very rarely get temps in the 80s but we did have some a couple of weeks ago. Since then it has cooled slightly but stayed dry. Today is the first rain we've had for weeks and it only started this evening. It's supposed to continue through tomorrow then dry up again. At least it will save having to water all my pot plants.

The ultrasound went well. They said it was 3 cysts, not fibroid cyst like I thought. One was called a simple cyst and two complicated cyst. I go back in 6 months to see if any different. Not a tumor, Sorry I was so long getting back on. Seems like I don't get on SP that often.

It has been pretty hot here in Florida. I stay in most of the time. Although the temp today is 82.

Hope you had a good time on your trip Michelle. Nice to get away and visit family.

I never see any fireflies or I'm just not out when they are.

We had a big rain yesterday and today, thunder and all.

We don't have any plans for the Monday, except to have an ultrasound on my left breast. Had the mammo so now this. We didn't have any real plans with anyone for the 4th. I do plan to wear red white and blue this weekend and Monday.

Happy 4th to all of us in the States.

Heat index at present is 101 F with high white fluffy clouds. If rain should appear around 4-5 I have a feeling it will result in a deluge.

Heatwaves are in fashion. We're having one too. Yes 97 is much hotter than 32 C. We've had temps in the 80s, that's around 32C, the hottest June temps in Scotland for at least 100 years. I must admit it has been wonderful, being able to sit outside without wondering about getting a chill, lol.

I think there are fireflies in some places although I have never seen them. Midges are our most common insect and they are awful. They're tiny things which bite and the bites itch like nothing imaginable. Sporting games have been abandoned because of them.

Glad you have somewhere cool to work and relax Rosemary.

Have a great weekend everyone.

We are having a heat wave! The next seven days are going to be in the 90s (this weekend up to 97). So, that's above 32 C? I'm glad we have air conditioning, or I wouldn't be able to take it. My home office is in the basement, where it is naturally much cooler, so I'll spend a lot of time working there. I need to think of meal ideas that don't require using the oven, because that heats up the house so much.

I noticed that this time of year the lightning bugs are out at night...it looks so pretty after dark! They are also called fireflies. Do you have them in Scotland? They twinkle at night, especially when it is hot and humid. I like them because they don't bite. :) We light to look out the windows at night before bed, when we've turned off all the lights, and watch them a few minutes. It's like a Christmas light show.

Today we have 24 C which I think is around 75 F. That is hot for here. We did get 28 C a couple of years ago but some years it struggles to reac 70 F. Not to worry I shall enjoy what we are having. I hope you manage to cope well with the high temps you are having.

We are in for a hot week here...up to the 90s.

Yes, we have lots of street fairs and state fairs in the summer months. As a kid I used to like going to the fair, to ride the rides, and as something fun to do in the summer. But now I don't go to them. The food is most often fried and not healthy, so I avoid temptations.

Yes, hot and humid here too, Michele. And you must have read my mind...too much ice cream for me too! But I try to make it a bit healthier with some tricks. I add in some fat-free plain Greek yogurt, and some fruit if I have it, and a dash of cinnamon. I feel that helps "stretch" the ice cream flavor with some healthy ingredients.

Sally, thanks for you post about your steady weight loss, and congrats on getting down to a weight you were at in 1982! That's great! I agree...slow and steady is probably the best plan!

I saw an interesting news story on CBS this morning about the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It talked about dinosaur "hunters" and showed them searching for dinosaur bones near the beaches. They showed a foot print of a dinosaur. Here's an article that talks about them:

It was a nice news story...such beautiful scenery, with the beaches and the green hills. I would love to visit someday!

If have been told by many that slow weight loss, stays off. I've found that so true. I've stop with the scale and only go by how clothes fit. I find that more rewarding then stepping on the scale.

However, these current 3 - H days really are not helping me to stay away from Ice Cream!

Only managed 1 point on the bonus spins today. I know some of you are having difficulty sticking to your chosen regime so I thought I would add my encouragement to you all. I was delighted to find last week, that I am finally, after 5 years of trying, to be down at a weight I was last at in 1982. I've only lost 6 pounds in the last year but using the tracking system and speaking to folks like yourselves has kept me on track. Essentially, my message is it doesn't matter how quickly or slowly we lose weight, the important thing is to keep going.

Thank you for the offer of the recipe, Sally. I've had All Bran a long time ago. I checked out the nutritional information, and I think it would be too high in carbs for me now. I have diabetes, so have to watch my carb levels. I realize it is high in fiber and is nutritious, which is good, but I try to keep my carb counts to under 100 grams a day, and just 1/2 cup of the cereal has 24 grams of carbs. So with the other ingredients, the carbs may add up.

I made up my own recipe using Greek yogurt, apple sauce, eggs, almond flour, and coconut flour. It turned out okay, but was too "wet" so I need to cut back on the apple sauce next time. With coconut flour you have to over-compensate with more wet ingredients because it absorbs a lot of liquid, but I overdid it! It still tastes good, but is more like a pudding. I'll keep experimenting!

I got a recipe from another spark friend for blueberry muffins made with All Bran cereal. They are very tasty and easy to make. If you would like it let me know.

Fell by the wayside last year but back on track now.

Thanks, Sally! You have a great goal. I agree...I like healthy foods, but seem to "love" the baked sweets, and don't know if I'll ever love a salad as much as a cookie. I keep trying to overhaul recipes to make them healthier, like substituting bananas or apple sauce for some of the sugar, using coconut flour which is high in fiber, etc. Still haven't found that perfect recipe, but it's fun to try. This week at the grocery store I got a bunch of blueberries that were on sale, so I'm trying to find a recipe for them that will be a treat, yet healthy.

Summer is always a good time to look at the previous year and see where you are going. Good luck to you too on getting to your goal.

Mine is to slowly retrain my brain to like healthy foods, my problem is I like them fine but I also still like the unhealthy ones. I am making progress though, managing to cut out more of the unhealthy ones, so not a failure by any means.

TGIF! I've decided now is a good time to reset my weight ticker and admit to those four pounds I gained. I wrote a blog about my new goals for summer, and I'm ready to get back on track. Hope everyone has a great weekend, and good luck with goals!

I enjoyed the wedding too. I taped it. I think I still have a program where they talked with some celebrities I need to watch. It was nice she invited her Suit friends.

We went to Disney World here in Florida, it was a nice day, didn't rain much at all and just enough cloud to keep it nice. I leaned we're a little too old for Disney. DH is planning for us to go to Epcot in January, his b'day.

Short answer, yes she has four children. Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and the youngest son, Prince Edward. Prince Charles was the first born to ensure the lineage and Princess Anne was the 'spare' as in 'the heir and a spare'. Prince Andrew and Prince Edward are much younger and are considered to be the Queen's children by choice rather than by duty.

Weddings over and BBCA is also quit for a change.

Question: Did Elizabeth the II have 4 children? During on of the programs that was presented I thought a Prince Edward was mentioned along with Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, and Princess Anne.

Their full names were mentioned earlier in the service. Yes, it was nice they didn't have to say all of them again. I personally loved the service. A definitely more modern twist, but still regal and beautiful. And since he is not going to be king, and is marrying an American, it was fun to see some American traditions brought in. I think some were really surprised by Rev. Curry's address and perhaps weren't used to such passionate preaching from the pulpit, but the churches I've gone to have plenty of that. If you listen to it again, it really is a beautiful message about love and goes along perfectly with Harry and Meghan's goals of dedicating their lives to helping charity. I loved all of the music. At first glance her dress surprised me because it wasn't more ornate, but when you saw the full package, with her and the tiara, and the long veil, it was perfect for her style. They had beautiful weather, and it all came together so nicely. Bravo! I watched it many times throughout the day, while I worked on a puzzle...brought a smile to my face. I hope we get more news about the reception and after party...I'm sure some good stories about what happened there!

I noticed that when they did the wedding vows that they didn't go through the full name, like I Meghan take you Henry John Paul Geroge Ringo (or whatever his full name is). It was just I Harry and I Meghan. That was nice though. Things have changed since weddings long ago. I'll have to go down the post here and watch the links on the weddings. Thanks for posting the links.
I didn't get up until 7:30, so I have a lot to watch on my DVR.

I think it's fine if she walks down the aisle by herself. That's what I did when I got married. By the time you are in your 30s, it's not like someone has to give you away since you've been providing for yourself (that was my case, anyway). But...it is a long walk with the world watching, so I imagine how nervous she would be, and it might be nice to have an arm to hold! So her Mom would be a nice choice. Or even Prince Charles, since he doesn't have any daughters to walk down the aisle...that may be a nice touch. We'll see!

I noticed today that BBC America has a lot of special programs for the wedding this week. On Comcast cable's on-demand section for BBC America, we can watch Queen Elizabeth's coronation, which is really interesting, and Charles and Diana's wedding, and some other special shows.

I'm planning a "staycation" this weekend. It's going to rain for the next three days, so a good time to watch all the wedding coverage like a virtual vacation. I'm also going to start a puzzle I got for Christmas that I haven't done yet. Have a good weekend!

Good morning. Just wanted to mention that I had already joined the team's goal of participating once a day, and today I noticed the other team goal of drinking five cups of water each day. I'm already participating in the "Three Month Mega Monster Daily Water Challenge," where you aim to drink 8 cups of water a day for three months. So I joined the team goal for drinking water as well, and filled in from the beginning of May, which is when the challenge started, as I know I drank that much water each day.

Thanks to Auna, who started this challenge. If anyone wants to join us, feel free! It's a nice encouragement and reminder to drink more water, with helpful tips and information about drinking water. And you can count all beverages...water, tea, coffee, milk, etc. Here is a link if you want to join:

That sounds funny! I've seen that show a few times and it was kind of fun. I was thinking about watching the royal wedding at the theater, but it's going to be three and a half hours of footage. So that's a bit long. I don't know. My mom balked at the time of it. It is a long time to sit in one place! I'll have to check out those two episodes of The Middle, thanks!

Did anyone see "The Middle" last night? It's a sitcom on ABC. It talked about Meghan and Harry's wedding, and I got a big laugh about it, the final five minutes or so (if you have Comcast cable, you can find it on-demand....the episode is called The Royal Flush). To put this episode in perspective, there was an episode when William and Kate got married too, in season 2, episode 20, called "Royal Wedding." In that episode, the mom really wants to watch the wedding, and the rest of the family make fun of her for being interested in it. She ends up getting pink eye and can't see it, and is really upset, so they realize how much it means and decide to watch and describe it to her. So when you know that back story, the current episode is sweet.
