I use only coconut oil and butter when cooking -- and olive oil for salads and dressings. So glad this topic is being discussed!

Thank you for the good info on canola oil. I would have never known any of these bad things...

Hi every body,im new just joined today. Here is what I learned about Canola Oil last week, i was really shocked,I cannot believe what is done to our food.Canola oil is partly made from a seed called rapeseed. This seed is what mustard gas is made out of. for those of you to young to know what mustard gas is, it was used during World War 1 and 2. It is a deadly gas and usually will kill you.It is so hard to believe the things in our food.I always thought Canola was god to cook with. You might try peanut oil.I did not know there was organic Canola. We should check our food very carefully. If you are a young mother i would be careful. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Im starting to take control of my life today. I will take care of me, love my self., be good to my self, I am strong, i can do this.

So glad you brought up this topic. It's bothered me for a while that "health gurus" (such as Jillian Michaels in Master Your Metabolism) still suggest canola as a top choice in cooking and baking. I always wondered exactly what a "canola" was! lol. That should have tipped people off right away...

I would go for the coconut oil - it's so good for you and as someone said before, adds a great taste (especially extra virgin coconut oil)

Other light oil options: grapeseed (has a hight smoke point) and walnut oil. I do substitute applesauce for most of the oil in my baked goods, but I find that just a couple tablespoons of oil in a recipe makes for a much better mouth feel than all applesauce or other fruit puree. I use flax oil in my heartier baked goods like banana bread but lighter oils in things like cupcakes.

I'm really pleased the message about canola oil is starting to get out there. When I suggest coconut oil to people they all go "ooh but that is a saturated oil therefore bad for us" but I always try to tell them that it is actually a healthy oil that has great health properties. A little bit of something good is better than a lot of something crappy.
Canola oil is why fast food fries don't go moldy after a month under the bed.

For baking - virgin coconut oil is good for you! It will also add a wonderful flavor to baked goods or even certain regional dishes. www.coconutoil.com/health_benefits_v

Applesauce and winter squash are great alternatives to oil in baking. For sauteeing and other cooking, coconut oil is great because it only oxidizes at very high temps, which makes it a healthier alternative, even over olive oil. Olive oil is good for non-cooking applications. You can also use safflower, sunflower, and corn oils (organic of course) for baking.

I have severe gastrointestinal reactions to canola oil (as does my mother) so I haven't been able to eat anything with it for years.

I stopped using canola oil a while ago when I figured out that it was an "engineered" food (which explained why I could never find an "organic" version of it anywhere. Now, I pretty much stick with olive oil alone (although I have a few other others like walnut oil and toasted sesame oil that I use for specific recipes). You can also use applesauce as a substitute for oil in baked goods--it works extremely well.

I just read this article about the negatives of Canola Oil. I use 1/3 c. of it in vegan cupcakes/muffin recipes. What would be the best alternative for baking -- coconut oil, olive oil, safflower oil? Other suggestions?
