Joining the conversation a little late but I always feel the need to include my 2 cents when I hear Monsanto mentioned.

I've known for years that they were up to some dubious things but I don't think I realized how far their reach truly was until I watched The World According to Monsanto 3 years ago. I was lucky to be able to attend a screening that included a Q&A session with a panel of experts who have been working for years in the "real food movement". I was already headed in that direction but this experience was the true catalyst for my current eating beliefs.

Greenpeace did a little write up on the documentary (here: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en
/news/features/monsanto_movie080307/) and it appears that you might be able to watch all or part of it for free on the internet. If you have any interest, I highly recommend it!

MSDESERTRODENT- I saw on one of your posts a commen about "Stonyfield caving" with GMO alfalfa. Can you give me some more information on that?

... it's at the top of my post - the really scary bit is that this researcher claims to have identified an actual NEW TO SCIENCE pathogen that infect both plants AND humans... (!!)

for anyone with a blog, please post the letter and a link to the original source - The Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance-

pass it on!

I just found another website that has a lot of info on the environment and organic farming. I'm linking one article that's especially relevant, but look around on there and you'll find many others. :

chaos

If anyone is interested we could start some discussions around some of these topics. :)

Sooner or later the average American consumer will catch on. Whether it's by a friend recommending Food.Inc, suggesting they read Pollan or Kingsolver, or maybe they stop by a local farm and suddenly have their eyes opened to REAL food.
Amusing enough, I received an email from Jobfinder.com. It habitually tells me the best markets to apply for jobs in the coming years; Organic Farmer was one of them. emoticon

I have been following this closely and signing petitions and forwarding these to so many friends and family... everyone is on board. It just goes to show that no one in DC is listening to the people who elected (or didn't elect) our leaders but rather are following their own sense of "follow the money"...

ANYWAY!

I agree, best thing to do is just grow your own, buy local, keep spreading the word to those who may not know.

And one more thing- DON'T buy RoundUp weed killer. Monsanto owns that too. Ugh!

I agree, the enemy is not the organic companies, it's Monsanto.
In addition to putting our money (and time) where our mouth is we can let as many people know as possible. Also, educating people about the difference between organic and conventionally grown is necessary. People who haven't understood the difference are not likely to care about GMO's. Also think of people who don't use the internet much. They are left out of the loop. Showing videos like Food Inc. at 4-H groups for gardening, gardening clubs, cooking clubs, churches, etc. can help.
Eating organic is just about to go mainstream and it is shear numbers that can make a difference. Just think about how many more organic items you see at regular grocery stores now then even a year or two ago.

Now that all being said just remember this is the reason why Stoneyfield, WFM and some of the others caved on the GMO Alfalfa
"The USDA presented the industry with only two options that they were considering– deregulation and deregulation with restrictions. Given the pervasive planting of GE crops in the U.S. – 93% of soy, 86% of corn, 93% of cotton and 93% of canola seed planted were genetically engineered in the U.S. in 2010 – the option of an outright ban was not on the table"
So far from many of the places I've read, it appears that was only the two options.
That left the big guys fighting GMO foods with not a whole lot. As it stands it was deregulation without restrictions that won, right?
That pretty much tells me that the lawmakers didn't even listen to any of the GMO resisters. By look of it, Monsanto is a powerhouse that will be pretty hard to stop. Best thing, IMHO would be to just buy local as much as possible, grow your own food, and stay away from the GMO cr*p on the shelves.
Now unfortunately, it's hard to get EVERYONE on board so many of us doing this will hurt Monsanto, barely. But who knows, maybe it'll catch on and do a little more damage to them.

I started a thread on the message boards in nutrition about the latest GMO's. Could use some support if anyone's interested.

LOL! I don't have any near me that are convenient to shop at so it's a non-issue.

There are alternatives like CSAs, Co-ops and farmer's markets. Even Amazon has tons of organic offerings.

Here's a link to find them in your area:

For me to boycott Whole Foods is a bit moot since I could never afford them anyway! They're not called Whole Paycheck Market for nothing.

I agree Nicole - I don't think I will be buying any of the big three products any time soon, although not that difficult for me since I don't really shop at Whole Foods and don't use the others products. HMMM I wonder if enough people boycott those three brands/stores if it would make a difference?

I am very upset about this, too. I cannot believe this happened. Shame on Whole Foods and these other companies that I thought I could really trust! Might have to take my business elsewhere...
