I have high hopes for this winter. I like root veggies from storage. I've done some canning and pickling (I don't have much freezer space). I always ramp up my sprouting in the winter. And best of all, one of my favorite you-pick places has built a tunnel to try to keep greens alive through the winter, so I may actually be able to get local spinach and collards when there is snow on the ground.

High hopes...

Yep, I'm in the same boat. 42 degrees north. It's starting to get darker and darker...

I can't bring myself to set up a grow light but I really would love to keep my basil going all winter.

Go to the Collingswood Farmers Market every Saturday morning, increase my yoga practice to at least 15 minutes per day, hike at least 3 new trails by the end of June, and eat more plant-based protein (I am not a vegetarian but like the health benefits of going meatless every now and then).

To get another chicken (I have one, and a small back yard), finish planting my 10x4 raised bed garden, and put in a perennial herb garden along the fence (weeds gotta go!).

We are having a very late spring here in Massachusetts. I've only just gotten some cabbage and salad greens set out and am just starting to prepare my other garden beds with compost. I have baby chickens in the basement and need to build them a coop so they can go outside. Predictors have been a problem in the past .... Any great ideas out there for keeping my chickens safe? More and more, I am shopping local first at farm stands and the farmers market, and then going to the grocery after if I want other items. More and more I am making menus around what I can find without going to the grocery. My goal is too cook my way through my freezer and then buy only local meat and fish. I've recently given up flour, because of an allergy. After experimenting with GF substitutes, I decided that I am happier and have fewer cravings if I just avoid most grains and sugars. Sometimes I'll have a small serving of oatmeal or rice ....though I am wondering about arsenic in rice. I'm trying to move sugar to the spice category and avoid foods with more than tiny amounts. I hope to get a lot of sunshine and exercise by spending a few weeks sailing with my father in may and June. I will plant my garden before i go, mulch heavily and hope for the best. I've had good luck with this method of gardening when I've travelled in the summer before.
