Kay, I usually have to click the F5 key on my keyboard to "refresh" the Fitbit Dashboard page on my computer for it to sync with my Fitbit and pick up today's data. That works for me. emoticon

My fitbit was working on the computer for 2 days that showed steps and miles. It didn't yesterday and is not recording today. I can read from the fitbit but not from the computer.

Hmmmm ... my thought would be that you need to contact Fitbit if you can't get into your account. I've looked around on their site and don't know of any way that you can manage without getting into your account. You could try checking out their Help page:
help.fitbit.com/

Hope you figure it out!

STRIDE CHANGE:
To change your stride, sign in to fitbit.com. Look at the upper right of the screen and you'll see your first name and last initial. Beside that, is a dropdown arrow. Click on the arrow. A menu will present. Click on "Account Settings". Under "Body Info" you'll see a place for your Stride Length and one for your Running Stride Length.

TIME CHANGE:
On that same screen for changing your stride, if you scroll down to the bottom, you'll see "Time". There is a place to select "Clock" (12 hour or 24 hour) and one for Timezone.

Remember to click the pink "Update profile" button at the very bottom to save your changes.

Hope this helps!

First of all, thanks for everyone's help trying to figure out how to properly log exercise using FB.

My major activity is cycling, both outdoor and spinning. I noticed I would come home from my ride and become a couch potato so I bought a ZIP FB to motivate me to move more while off the bike. It definitely has worked for me!

Question: I understood from postings that FB does not log steps during cycling. Yesterday I did a 40 mile ride and forgot to take the FB off so I stopped and put it in my tool kit bag. When I finished my ride I had done about 21,000 steps! When I got home I sync'd w/FB and SP FB. SP showed 238 minutes and about 828+ calories for the day. The number of minutes was pretty close but the number of calories was off by about 50%. Is there any way I can adjust my FB or SP FB data and then manually add my cycling? I just don't know where to store my FB while cycling so it doesn't count my movement.

You can calibrate your stride with the fitbit. Measure your stride and then go into account settings. Under personal settings, you can enter your actual stride length.

I know what you mean about the car or rather a motorcycle. We went for a ride through the mountains back in the spring and it said I climbed over 400 floors. It didn't give me that many steps because we were on a Goldwing but I couldn't believe the floors!

I walk a measured four miles every Saturday and my fb agrees with it. I also did three tests of 100 steps and the fb was within 10 percent each time which I have read is fairly accurate as a pedometer. Sometimes it recorded a couple of extra steps and sometimes it was short a couple but it seems to average out.

I figure it's just estimating my step length but maybe I'll check it with a mile walk soon. I have another pedometer that had me calibrate a step length. I guess the fitbit knows how tall I am.

Did anyone answer the question about the walking workouts? I just did one yesterday and yesterday I also did a little test on my step counting... Just a little background, early this past summer I tested my average stride lengths for walking and jogging on a track and ever since I calibrated those settings my fitbit distance has been accurate or close for walking and jogging actual distances outside or on a treadmill. Yesterday I did 3 tests where I counted 100 and took steps to see what the fitbit tracked--all three with the same bra placement. the first was a mix of forward, backwards and lateral steps and it counted 105 steps, the second just forward and backward and it counted 101, the third was side to side and it counted 200. Something is wrong with how I count side to side steps. But 101 steps when I did 100, that is pretty good. I am happy with that placement, I also see more steps when I wear it on my hip (I didn't do this test though that way). You might just need to play with it and see what works best for your body. But more steps isn't always more accurate.

Now the walking dvd, as I described my fitbit tracks walking pretty accurate for me in terms of step count and distance for actual walking. I did two leslie miles yesterday and it counted 1.4 miles of fitbit distance not two. Is .6 miles a big difference? I guess I don't really think I trust her distance claims as literal truth. It did seem like the same intensity as if I did a brisk two mile walk. But really the kicking, tap steps, side steps, arm movements it is truly more low impact aerobics than regular walking. Not to criticize these workouts as I think they are great for excuse free moderate activity. I just wouldn't get too hung up on her distance claims. In the introduction she said it was based on the musics beats per minute, and I am guessing it is the typical 2000 steps = 1 mile guesstimate. Well, usually I need to walk more than 2000 steps to achieve a mile with my stride length (this probably depends on your height).

I did a lot of stairs this morning and I could really see a difference in the dashboard calories burned vs. the day before. So that's encouraging. I mean, maybe it didn't care that they were stairs, since it is quite a few steps either way.

I also made a bunch of spreadsheets to figure out where I should be at a given point each day, based on a good day for me at my current level and at the recommended ideal.

I might need therapy.

You have to think of the device as a guideline - it's not 100% accurate. I had the much-more expensive BodyBugg for 2 years and it had the same challenges.

I notice a big difference in step count when i wear my fitbit on my bra vs my waistband. when I wear it on my bra it is always a couple thousand steps less. 2 days ago, I put the FB on my bra, walked around the room for a minute getting things together for work (aprox 20-30 steps) then checked my fitbit and not a single step registered, the counter still read zero!

I wear mine all the time and instead rely on the FOOD PLAN that FB provides. I feel it is much more accurate than SP's plan. It is a static plan and takes into account days where I push myself harder (therefore increasing the amount of calories I can take in) as opposed to those days where my cardio activities are minimal and I need to decrease the amount of calories I take in.

When I do an activity like "Curves Circuit" I remove my fitbit so that it doesn't double count. I think in the original introduction that Sparkpeople did it told you to not double the activity (i.e. do not wear the FB zip while treadmilling, or other activities). Makes your synced entry more reliable.

Yeah, and I guess if you want to be really compulsive about it, you can go into the fitbit site and enter that you were sitting down during the time of the car trip. I mean, the nice thing is I can get up and walk in place for 10 minutes (you have to pick up those feet) and not have to log it. At least, that's what I'm finding.

Cars are a nightmare with the FitBit or BodyBugg - it measures activity, stairs and steps while driving. Not bad if it's just some local trips but a nightmare on long ones.

Haven't noticed the FitBit picking up steps until it's at least 10.

Oh well, it's just for a measure of scale,

Interesting. But don't you get calories for any movement? I'm not sure how it avoids counting driving in the car. I could be wrong. I had another pedometer that only counted over 4 steps in a row. I hope it counts stairs, as that was what I didn't like about my old pedometer.

I should mention I have a fitbit zip, which doesn't track sleep, but apparently you can enter it. I guess it assumes a completely sedentary burn rate if you aren't wearing it, whereas if you are actually asleep, it assumes a little less than that. I worried it would duplicate the calories, but it didn't. I'm hopeful that the same will apply to other activities. But first I would have to do some other activities.

I had about 1820 calories for yesterday, and then I entered on the fitbit site that I was asleep the last hour and a quarter and it reduced my total calories to 1766. Waaah! I want accuracy, but still. Waah. Now to find out of fitbit counts breastfeeding. Doesn't look like it, though "nursing" brought up chambermaind, making beds. Whoa.

Maybe I'll switch to Babyfit at the start of december. Mostly, I've just added 300 calories to what sparkpeople says I should eat (and then subtracted 500 for a weight loss deficit).

Carrie, thank you for sharing that information as I always wondered when I did that while doing the elliptical or the stationary bike if it worked properly :)
