Great Information here! I'm new to the group as well.

Question....I want to try to get pregnant now, but I am putting it off for one month to try to loose some weight (I know that is not much time...but I am getting old!-I'll be 32 next month)....my FEAR is stretch marks!!! I've gained about 40lbs over the last 5-ish years and I am very upset about it! Any pointers to make me feel better would be appreciated!

I know that after pregnancy I will work very hard to get back into shape (and breast feeding will help), but I don't want to be thin with tons of stretch marks. I guess this is inevitable!

Sorry....I just realized this is not exactly a health issue, but for me it is related to eating and exercising.

Thanks so much for all the advice on this site! Glad I found this group! emoticon

Hey, I just wanted to say what a great forum this is and it provides a lot of great information. I also noticed that there were a lot of questions about options for pain control during labor and the related pros and cons. This is a great website that gives some good, concise information about both chemical interventions, and more natural interventions such as relaxation and breathing techniques. Hope it helps. www.lcanesthesia.com/labor.html#rela

Hi everyone-

I was just reading all the posts, and the discussion about childbirth pain. I saw a show on A&E the other day and the woman used a TENS unit to block labor pain. She said the pain wasn't too bad, and she had a fairly easy delivery. Has anyone heard of this or know anyone who did it? I have a tens unit from an old shoulder injury and I REALLY like the idea.

Thanks for the reminder to get my dental care out of the way for the year. Right now my stress level is elevated and I'm working on getting it lowered by the first of the year.

In response to the dental post: I work in the dental field and I can't stress enough for women to get a full check up and cleaning before they conceive. We can't take x-rays on women that are pregnant, so if you get this done before you concieve than you are able to take care of any necessary treatment properly. There's alot of research on the topic of healthy teeth/gums and the connection with other health issues. Don't forget about your pearly whites!

There may not be about pregnancy but just thought I'd mention about the BHP in hard plastic bottles. They would be in any of the name brands like Avent, Dr. Brown and platex. I know it was on GMA yesterday about it.

I think this was mentioned before, but I talked with my Dr. Today...

As long as you have a regular fitness routine pregnancy, you can continue that. It is recommended you use a Heart rate monitor though.

I bought one this weekend, just to help better gage the calories I burned. Just an FYI incase it wasn't mentioned before.

** there hasn't been much infor on the news lately pretaining to pregnancy or women's health. As soon as new things are mentioned, I will post it here!

Thanks! I'll start incorporating a little more dairy into my diet and maybe that will bring my calorie count up a little. Have to be careful with the milk though because I'm lactose intolerant. Lactaid helps a little

I definitely gained the 2-3 lbs my first trimester but I honestly believe 95% of it went into my bbs. My bras stopped fitting after about the 5th week!

How the break down goes from what my OBGYN had said:

No calorie change for the first Trimester
300 extra calories for the 2nd
600 for the 3rd.

I'm not sure if that is the norm for everyone, but she said that's how you gage your food to not gain access weight.

The website below shows a 2-3 lbs gain in 1 st trimester. 3-4 in the second, and 4 in the third. (for me at a start weight of 165)

If you enter your weight it shows you what you should gain.

As for adding the calories, you could try adding a couple of extra snacks in each day (cottage cheese, cheese cubes, mini bagel with peanut butter)

Add an extra starch or small portion of meat to one of your meals. Drink milk with some of your meals.

Okay, so I have a question because this has been bothering me lately. I've been eating around 1200 calories a day for the past couple of months and I find it hard sometimes to even get to 1200 calories a day, which I don't think is necessarily good, but I'm stuffed all the time and can't make myself eat more. And I'm getting plenty of fruits and veggies and meat and whole grains so I don't really know how to increase it. So here is the question...I think you're supposed to eat about 2300 calories when you're pregnant...how do I get from 1200 calories to 2300 calories when I'm staying full all the time??? I'm eating 3 small meals, and at least 2 snacks, sometimes 3, a day and I don't know how to increase calories without increasing the amount of fatty foods which is what got me to where I was in the first place.

Your welcome! I hope all the topics and news reports that I've been posting have helped. There have been some good ones about vitamins and epi's as well. I thought it would be helpful to have topics related to pregnancy and childbirth and just weight loss forums. I'm glad to see this forum topic helps others!

The two "programs" that I've heard of are Hypnobabies and hypnobirthing. I'm sure there are more out there though. Hypnobabies sometimes have classes that you can go to while others are more of an at home program.

I've never heard of hypnosis during childbirth...sounds interesting and a lot more healthy than the epi. Have to look into that one.

I considered hypnosis as well I just considered it too late and from reading on how to do it its an everyday practice thing until you give birth. I didn't find out about it until about 32 weeks and I was so busy I knew I wouldn't have time. I do think it would work, here's why too. I somewhat put myself in a hypnotic state anyway without taking the courses. It hurt but I could manage it and actually even during transition I was falling asleep through some of the contractions. I would definitely consider it! Much better then the epi!!!

I always thought I would have the epi, but now that I know it only takes the edge off the pain, it's not worth it to me. I'd rather have the pain for labor and delivery than that on top of the side effects and additional pain it causes.

Theres pain no matter what...I am though considering hypnosis. I'm still skeptical if that would really work, but a hospital close to use offers the courses. We shall see, sounds a tad Houdini-ish to me!

I wish I could have a natural childbirth, but I know myself too well...I have an extrememly low pain tolerance!! My mom has 4 kids and had epidurals with the first 3, but didn't have time for it the 4th time. She said she would definitely have an epidural again. My mom has a better pain tolerance than I do so i'd be kidding myself to think I could do it naturally. It's so much better for you though.
I also have a friend who had a baby and swore she was not going to have an epidural because of all of the potential dangers and side effects...by the time she got to the hospital she had changed her mind! I have the upmost respect for all you ladies out there who can go through childbirth au natural!!

I just take the Meijer brand. On the babyfit website somewhere there is a place to tell you the minimum a prenatal vitamin should have in it. Beyond that its just preference as to which one you choose and whether you can stomach them!

Im taking a multi-vitamin with 400mg of folic acid, but was thinking about getting generic prenatals instead when I go to the store today. Do you know which one might be better to take.

I believe some doctors will apply a topical to numb the area before they cut. I'm sure if you ask, they will. But I've also been told by women that you're concentrating on other things and have pain already so you really don't even notice it.

I tell myself that's true so I don't freak out!

Thanks for all the info ladies.

I keep telling myself Im all about the drugs but if the pain is only for while giving birth and then pretty much goes away I might reconsider. I am not afraid of needles, but something about not being able to take a shower bothers me.

I have a friend at work who also had an epideral and said that months after having her little boy her back still hurt in the spot where she had it.

I also heard that they can numb you "down there" so that they can cut you. I wonder if that takes away a little of the pain.

Coming from someone who basically went through labor naturally (ish) I could give you my two cents. When it came to the pushing I couldn't push my baby out because of a cervical lip. We tried the epidural first but then ended up with a c-section.

Pros of natural-
I felt like I accomplished a very daunting task and fel1 more empowered.

By the time I got to the pushing it really didn't hurt because I was just so grateful to be at the pushing stage

I ended up so tired I still end up sleeping through contractions without any pain medication

Cons of a natural-

I went through a very long labor (24 hours for me) and still end up with a c-section

I labored through the night and be absolutely exhausted at the end

I felt like I had to push about 6 cm and and to NOT push for a very long time which was harder then the contractions themselves

Pros of the epidural-

Allowed me to finally get some sleep

Cons of the epidural-

I hated not being able to move my legs. I could feel them, it just felt like I had 1000lbs on them

I couldn't shower for 24 hours afterwards (not sure if this was because of the c-section or the drugs) so I went without a shower for about 48 hours or more

If given a choice I would definitely go through it again naturally I would just suggest 2 things:

1. Go into your labor KNOWING you're not going to use any drugs

2. Have a good support system whether it be your partner, mother, doula, etc.

I hope this helps!

I too am afraid of the pain. I hate needles and shots and am really considering a natural birth. That and because the side effects of the epidural they give you (severe head aches and back pain days after)sounds almost worse than birth itself.

Many women I've talked to say that although natural hurts, the pain is basically gone once the baby is born. Also every woman said she was more coherent after delivery and able to shower herself and walk (the epidurals caused those same women to need assistance). They also all said they didn't have any pain within the next week that a couple of Motrin 200s didn't take care of.

I'm referring to 15-20 women all of whom had both natural and drug births. These do include family, friends, and other women at my Dr's office.

My Dr is very honest about information regarding delivery. She said that more often than not, the epidural only takes the edge off the pain. You're not supposed to be completely numb as that can cause stress on you and the baby from the amount of drugs.

My mom delivered her last naturally, not by choice. by the time she got to the hospital the window of time had closed for the epidural to be administered. She said it was very painful, but after my brother was born, the pain was gone. She was sore, but nothing like the pain she had because of the epidural in her other 2 births. She also said (yrs before i asked about it) that the epi only took the edge off the contractions. had she known that before hand she would have all her children naturally.

I guess you just have to weigh the pros and cons to your situation. I'm a chicken and while I say natural, I really don't know. I'm still partial to being rendered unconscious with a frying pan; but hey, that's just me!

Yes it is!!! My Doctor confirmed that one! She also said that if actively weight train, it's also easier. Your Abs and Back muscles will be stronger and less effort will be used or needed while pushing.

Having a steady fitness routine before and during the pregnancy will also allow you to not gain unnecessary weight. And what you do gain, it will come off easier and faster! You also tend to heal faster too!

All the more reasons to make sure we get in shape and stay that way!!!!

I read somewhere the other day that working out before and while your pregnant helps a lot of women have an easier labor (less severe contractions and easier delivery)...if this is true it is a definite motivation for me because that is what scares me the most about pregnancy...the delivery!!

I use the Meijer generic ones. I take them currently because I'm still breastfeeding. I've heard that it can still have great benefits. My doctor said any prenatal vitamins are fine as long as you can keep them down. Some can make you feel nauseous, especially while pregnant.

I've always taken prenatal vitamins before each pregnancy (had two) and although we're not trying until spring I'm taking them already now. It certainly can't hurt you any that's for sure! Also have also bought the spring valley ones at Walmart (it's the generic) and they work great. Why spend more money if you don't have to. Of course your doctor can also recommend a good brand too but I've never had a problem with them.

My doctor actually told me this recently. Taking prenatal vitamins at least a full month before you conceive reduces your chances of having a baby with Spinabifida tremendously! He said the over the counter ones are just as good as the prescription ones.

This is a big one, but I know most of you already know this:

Take Folic Acid!! You should start getting this into your system on a regular basis at least 3-6 months before you concieve.

A great source of Folic Acid aside from vitamins is Orange Juice!

A lack of Folic Acid can cause a fatal birth defect called Spinal Bifida (sp?). This now-a-days is very, very rare! So drink you Orange juice, eat an orange, or take a vitamin every day! A healthy mom helps make for a healthy baby!

A study released from the Journal of Fertility and Sterility have found:

That men use their cell phones excessively lower their good Sperm count and raise their Abnormal Sperm count.

This is not a conclusive study, though it does leave concerns about links to radiation exposure from cell phones. More information will be released in the future once more tests have been completed.

Hi team!

Just a reminder! After reading some posts from another team I wanted to remind everyone that stress can make it difficult to conceive. It messes with your hormone levels amongst other things.

So when you're feeling a little stressed out do what you can to relax.

Take a hot shower or bubble bath
Do some lite Cardio for 10-20 minutes
Go for a walk
Journal
Laugh
listen to your favorite songs

it was based on a 22 year study. From what was said, you don't have any signs for about 10 years. Some women it was sooner, some later, but averaged out to 10 years. It has something to do with Kidney function and how the sugar was metabolised...I didn't get a chance to write the full story down before the airing ended.

I did find that interesting though. Whether or not we agree with the findings, I thought it sounded important enough to share. I think that informing team members about health issues and studies is a great idea. It gives information and helps to motivate.

Is that a guarantee?? That seems a little hokey that you'll DEFINITELY develop diabetes. My sister in law had GD and everything went back to normal after birth and she hasn't had a problem since.

DID you know?

That women who develope Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy increase thier risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes within about 10 years of that pregnancy . The risks increased for women who were 35 and over that had gestational diabetes...Something of concern.

All the more reason to watch your weight before and during your pregnancy!

(I saw this on a Health Watch on the evening news)

This was medical information released last week:

1 in 3000 women of all ages will suffer a stroke after giving birth. This is caused by High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, and/or high and excess weight.

The best way to prevent a stroke is to:

*Get rid of acsess weight before pregnancy
*Get rid post baby weight ASAP
*Get control of your health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and so on
*Get on a regular exercise schedule...even during pregnancy!!!

All the more motivation to get this weight off!
