And to tell you the truth the people who you might assume are thinking you look stupid are so busy thinking about whether or not YOU think they look stupid, they have no idea you are even struggling.

Loved the video, they are in my home town.

Here's the silly part--I took swimming lessons each year as a kid--I just kinda blew off the names & just got to the other end without giving much thought of whether I was doing it right. For instance, I watched a video on underwater swimming & realized what I do with my arms when I'm under there is called breast stroke--I don't remember ever doing it above the water, like the cool way I saw on a video, probably b/c in my youth, I didn't want water in my mouth or nose/haha. In my late teens, twenties & almost all of my thirties, I never would have put on a suit to go---Oh, what I would give to look that bad now-hahaha. I would be clad in spandex. Anyway, I'm trying to dust off the memories & get back on the horse. I did ask about swimming lessons--the man said they used to offer it, but few people were interested. I bet I can guess why. I told him they should run an ad for adults to learn to swim free-style laps well & list the dress code in big bold type: REQUIRED UNIFORM IS SWEAT SUIT. haha--might get more applicants. Anyway, here is an informational & entertaining side-stroke video I found: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uco-HNiLimI&

Everyone looks stupid when they're learning something new- it's ok!
Why not take some swim lessons (or water aerobics) at your local pool?

I love to look stupid because eventually I will look great doing what I am doing. The really stupid ones are those who don't even attempt to try something new.

It really is okay to look stupid.

I've done a lot of it, and if you keep looking stupid long enough, you can often wind up looking great! I do wish you luck, and I remind you that back strokes can build upper body strength and skill and comfort with the water, and they require less coordination with breathing. The side stroke was easiest for me to learn first.

Good luck to you!

Well, I'm working on with this new concept of swimming laps to build & maintain my upper body strength since I'm unable to use my wrists. I've been studying videos on the internet & learning when & how you take breaths on the count of 3, 5, or 7---I've even been thinking about lying down with my head & stomach on a piano bench & my knees on a stool: so as to practice my new techniques I'm working on---b/c I do not want to spend the rest of my life doggy paddling---that would be no where near as cool as one of my role models--the V8 spokes-lady, who's an 84 year old water skiing grandma. So right before I put my piano bench in my living room, I ran across the following article that I'll post which basically is a swim instructor saying that, while he's teaching kids to swim, the parents are always approaching him & saying they wish they could swim better(you know, look cool & professional, like what I'm wanting). He says what's stopping them is their fear of looking stupid, AND THAT IT"S REQUIRED TO LOOK STUPID TO LEARN IT. UGH!!! I know it's true, but sure hate to hear it said. I'm leaving now to see if I can contact a scuba shop & plead with them to cut me a deal where I can use their pool. Wish me luck. I also am proud of myself for agreeing he's right & that you can't THINK proper free-style swimming form into existence & so I'm just gonna have to get in a pool & flop around spasticly & possibly cough up swallowed water in front of strangers. I despise that idea, but accept it must be done for my own future health. The only way that I'm gonna be able to put my still bigger-than-I-want body into my not-great swimsuit & show up to make a fool of myself--is that I am gonna focus my mind on the mental picture of how cool I will be one day in my future, & when I will take my own grand kids swimming & snorkeling & I will have photos in my house of me (hopefully, where I am very old & still scuba diving, which I've done once & am scared of sharks, but will still do it anyway b/c my hubby loves to go & we're gonna teach the kiddos.) My scuba finds will be displayed on my mantle & coffee tables & I will tell my kids that life is an adventure & to always appreciate all the cool stuff in the world; & then I will show them the videos that I will be filming of me this year, as I flounder around looking stupid. I'm doing this swimming thing & I want everyone to grab hold of something & make it your mission & take photos of the beginning so it will inspire others. We're all inspiring, remember? Now get out there & do something that makes you look stupid!!!Here are a few 'looking stupid' jokes for your entertainment:
--"Whenever a man does a thoroughly stupid thing, it is always from the noblest motives."-Oscar Wilde
--"The way to succeed is to double your failure rate."-Thomas Watson
--"The key is to commit crimes so confusing that police feel too stupid to even write a crime report about them."-Randy Milholland
--"I always hear people saying-do it afraid. I'd like to add-do it looking stupid."-me, just now./haha
--Here is the article that reminded me to stop over-thinking it, to accept I'm gonna look stupid, & to just get in the pool & start doing it. I find it's interesting he says breathing technique is the most important part--funny how folks are always reminding each other to breathe slowly & deeply. If we weren't all here to keep reminding each other to breathe--I bet small brown paper bag sales would increase significantly/haha: www.squidkid.org/2009/01/29/freestyl
