About 13 years ago, while in India I had the ability to have raw, organic milk and made my own yogurt. If you have this opportunity, by all means, do so. There is no healthier way to do it.

I'm so happy to see this discussion thread! Probiotics are so important! Study after study is finding that our Gut health affects our whole health! I love the brand I'm using since it is shelf stable and designed to arrive in the gut, where we need it, alive!

I'm also interested in making my own sauerkraut and fermenting other foods too! I hope to have time to start this soon! Does anyone in this group do this?

You've got a good point.
Also the flora (bacteria, candida, etc) in the gut sends messages to the brain to eat the food that allows them to grow and multiply. (ie, candida craves white sugar and white flour)

If 90% of Serotonin is located in the gut, that makes perfect sense why people not only overeat but eat the wrong foods. There's the 'feel good' feeling that so many reach for.

Exactly. The fact that it's encoated, it is protected through the saliva and gastric acid.

I have no idea if it's an iron-clad, legally approved guarantee, but it's working for me. I've been happy with other products that the same Jarrow company offers (which are also coated, so as to protect the pill until it gets to the part of the gut that it needs to get before it deploys.). Other family members also used their products (like their time release alpha lipoic acid, which is how I first heard of them).

I don't get any money from them, so don't worry, not like I'm an advertising shrill. I just go to the health food store and online and read what I can and try not to go nuts.

You're welcome to research the product or not. If you are happy with what is working for you, then that's awesome! But it does seem to be helping me quite a bit and the doctors I have were happy with me being on it. Everyone has different needs.

PROVERBS31JULIA, I mentioned natural sources (including both of these) in my original post. Caveat: Yogurt cannot be pasteurized (as the heat kills the probiotics).

Does Jarrow Formula brand GUARANTEE their Probiotics arrive into the large intestine ALIVE?

Sparkmail me if interested in a source that is shelf-stable Probiotic that does guarantee and has 5 strains of wholesome bacteria.

Iíve had good results with Jarrow Formula brand Jarro-Dophilus probiotics that donít need refrigeration.

Hmmm, sorry about that - Sparkpeople allows me to rotate photos when putting them in my blog, but evidently not inside messages. So I guess you will have to rotate your head.

As gut flora improves cravings decrease for sweet as probiotics prefer fiber.

Probiotics are rightly in the news for all their benefits. I regularly consume them. However, not all probiotics are quality. In order to work, they MUST arrive in the large intestine ALIVE! The best sources are natural food products, such as, sauerkraut, kefir, kimchi and yogurt. Note: the label on the yogurt MUST say 'active' or 'live' culture. If you choose to purchase probiotics to take on days that you are not consuming them in food, it is best to purchase from a company that puts a GUARANTEE in writing that the probiotics WILL get through the saliva, gastric acid and enzymes in the small intestines unharmed.

Hippocrates said, 'All disease begins in the gut.'

The more I learn, the truer I'm finding this statement!

For example, ~90% of the Serotonin (the 'feel good' neurotransmitter) is in the gut.
