Explanation
All of these factors affect your ability to stretch: Muscle connective tissues have a natural tendency to shorten with aging, resulting in tighter muscles. Several studies have shown that females tend to be more flexible than males. Active people tend to be more flexible than inactive people. An increase in muscle temperature results in a decrease of muscular resistance, which enhances your ability to stretch.

GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF STRENGTH THIS MOTHER'S DAY

On Mother’s Day, we think of flower arrangements, chocolates, and sentimental homemade cards. On top of these delightful gifts from others, this Mother’s Day, consider giving yourself a gift, too—a gift in the form of strength training. 

Wait, what? you ask. I thought Mother’s Day was about relaxation, pampering, and hopefully my husband or kids making a meal… 

It is about these things, but ultimately, Mother’s Day is about love. And what better way to show yourself the love you deserve than with exercise?   

While we might think of exercise as medicine, in fact, it’s actually a gift for our soul. It energizes us and fuels happiness. It also provides an escape. It’s a break from daily pressures, where we moms do something just for ourselves.   

But in order for exercise to be a gift, we have to see it as such. “It’s important to keep in mind that how moms frame or think about exercise really impacts whether it feels energizing or depleting,” says Michelle Segar, PhD, University of Michigan researcher and author of No Sweat: How the Simple Science of Motivation Can Bring You a Lifetime of Fitness. “Once moms start seeing the new ways how physical movement can be a gift they start craving it,” she says.  

“Gifts typically are fun and feel good to do in some ways,” Dr. Segar says. “Strength training gifts us with strength, better balance, feelings of empowerment, and improved posture,” she says.  

Shifting your Movement Mindset 

If you’ve viewed exercise as another annoying thing on your to-do list, you’re not going to switch to seeing as a gift overnight. Start by reminding yourself that physical activity—particularly a workout that combines strength training and cardiovascular exercise—reduces anxiety and depression. “Regular activity is an elixir of life—it not only energizes us and lifts mood, it helps us think better and be more creative,” Dr. Segar says. 

There’s science to back this up. According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, doing a mix of an aerobic activity and strength training for at least 30 minutes, three to five times a week, can do the following:  

Help keep your learning, thinking, and judgment keen as you ageLower your risk of depressionImprove your sleepReduce anxiety and stress 

Both the aerobic exercise and strength training that make up the Curves workout release endorphins, which make you feel good. Strength training’s endorphin release is particularly powerful, so it’s a good idea for a busy mom to include strength training in her workout to reap its benefits to emotional health. 

In addition to reminding yourself that moving helps you feel better in body, mind, and spirit, it’s crucial that you give yourself permission to move in ways that feel good to you. “It’s time to toss out any ‘rules’ you have for exercise because they actually tend to prevent busy women from fitting regular physical activity into their lives,” Dr. Segar says.   

Here’s how:  

Embrace exercise as a gift. 

“We know moving lifts our mood and fuels us, even when we do it for just a few minutes at a time,” Dr. Segar says. “So the best way to transform exercise from a chore into a gift is to do in a way that makes you feel good and fits into your schedule.” That may not mean a 60-minute gym routine but instead, a quick but powerful circuit workout that fits into your schedule.  Segar shows us how to take specific steps to transform exercise from a chore to a gift in No Sweat.  

Work out with a friend. 

Most women don’t feel like they have enough time for exercise or their friends, so why not combine the two? Invite a friend to join Curves, so the two of you can work out together and catch up. At Curves, you always work out alongside others, which gives you added motivation and support.  Do it any way you like. 

One of the best things about exercise and the reason it is truly a gift is you can do it your way. The traditional Curves Circuit workout is available at any fitness level, so you can do it at your own speed. Want to switch things up a little? You can also take a class to improve your balance, core strength or overall tone. Or take a dance class to add in some fun.  It’s your special time—a gift! —so spend it the way you want.

good job on the 5k! would like to do another one myself someday..first one was at age 67and ranwalked on the beach! Awesome..48 minutes....loved it. Extra nice cuz hubby went too and we had a great time.

emoticon I like the Kettlebell, but I may have to jump out of my Comfort Zone and take a class or at least get a few Sessions with a Trainer to help me work out a really good routine.
I am putting one together from different videos, just not sure if it is really as effective as it could be.

Good Job! I started the 25 pushups a day 30 day challenge. I like your planks too so I am going to add that to my home routine. I just returned from a trip to grandkids and now am ready for a full month with no trips planned so this next 30 days will be working out challenge days. Love the Jillian exercises and monday will get to try the new moves for april. Yahoo. By the way, how are the kettle bells working out for you?

Good job on the bell....let us know how it works out. I have often wondered about using one, so far have just used 10lb dumb bell. Careful not to hurt your back, proceed with form rather than speed. Best of luck to you this st. p day!

emoticon Sounds like you are making GREAT Progress!! I'm glad that they offer/allow modifications on the Jillian Workouts. I have seen some Demos of the Side and Reverse Planks. No Way I'd be doing them, LOL!!

emoticon I think it was in the 70's or near that this afternoon, but I didn't have any Sunscreen with me and I was pooped after work, so I just went to the Gym and watched The Rifleman while I rode the Recumbent Bike for half an hour (6.85 Mile). It just seemed 'Easier' than Walking.

Nice day for a walk outside! Well, third month of Jillian at Curves is harder than the first two! Each month they progressively get harder. I don't do "jacks" or anything with the word jacks attached to it.LOL I have 3 screws and a plate in my ankle, so no jacks. I step instead, which is a modification. Lots of planks, planks with jacks, side planks, reverse plank with one leg...not this lady though...but a few of us can do it. My feet are nailed to the floor for the reverse plank, no way I can lift one off and hold the plank. Guess I know what this month's goal will be. Also am using the spark tracker and am about to jump to 9500 steps. I thought about doing it today, but it's only been at 9 for a week, so I think I'll wait a few more days. Love that tracker! It has been two months now with Jillian's workouts at Curves! We have 4 s essions per week, and now in March there will be a 3rd routine. It keeps you motivated having new exercises to do, and they are getting progressively more difficult. By the end of the month, though, seems I am able to do them. I do feel stronger, more toned, and sweat tremendously in the workout. The new machines aren't "new" as in a different type, they are just upgraded to look more modern in color and design, plus there are only 12 in the circuit, which is 2 less than what we had. It is still a good workout and I always leave the gym glad that I came in. I go 5x a week now, and we have Jillian, Zumba, and then I do the regular circuit because I can't keep up with the 30 second change. I guess I just am moving too slow between stations or something, as I am always still on the machines when it is time to do the exercise in between. Takes me longer to get up off the floor LOL So, I just do the machines with Curves Smart afterwords. They call me the Everready Energizer Bunny at the gym, but at 67 I am anything but! I just like working out and since I drive 15 mi one way, I want to make it count! Have a great week everyone!

Well we had our first session with Jillian workout today. It was a real good workout. Only two ex were on the floor on your knees for push ups and the plank; and you could do full versions and avoid the knees. It's only 30 seconds, everyyone should be able to do that, short of surgery etc Getting down on the floor is no problem for me, it's getting back up again, and in a hurry to go to the next ex! But I managed. Great workout..Love it that Jillian is the model doing the ex on the video and not a sub. She can move!

There will be 4 different sessions available MWF and three different sessions TTH; in addition to the regular zumba classes and the Body Basics. This should fix my "plateau" thing, and if it doesn't, I will always wonder why!

to ljcannon: I know they will, but must encourage them to do a modification or some other move, just keep moving. A few complained with just the Body Basics workouts at first, then they just came at a different hour instead of trying to do more. Oh well, for some it is social hour, and I guess it is better than sitting on the couch for them. I understand that the workouts in Jan will be for a set time, and by video; so maybe the complaints will go away.

Here it is:: Starts in January Jillian will be leading workouts via video; no more recovery boards = mats instead...new workout routine every month exercises will have beginner/advanced routines; workout at 50% level on machines and ll0% :-) on mats with various exercises The mats are thick enough so the knees will be ok. Yay, it will be awesome. It will make a difference in results. I had been to a few curves while traveling that had a coach in center who led diff exercises throughout the day and always thought they were great. So I am very happy to see it finally be official.. welcome to the curves makeover No, I do no get paid for this, I am just a struggling fitness seeker like the rest of you. Oh, and there are lots of new workout clothes with less adv on them so you can wear them out and about, new styles, colors, fabrics, some "control" fabrics i.e. spandex, etc. Should be lots of fun, and I am waiting....waiting....waiting..... ,

curves is also getting new equipment in January to go along with all the new exercises planned.
Wish there was one closer to me too, I drive 15 mi one way, 5x a week, sometimes 6. Retired, and now I drive more miles than when working! Go figure! Oh, cute, GO FIGURE. LOL

Hey, Curvettes, have you heard that Jillian Michaels of Biggest Loser has signed on to partner with Curves? We will be having new workout routines from her monthly to do on the rec boards!

Get your spark activity tracker, it works great and tracks the difference in your steps of whether you are working out or just walking in general...awesome.
