I have to do sitting leg lifts twice a day using a band for knee therapy.
Can I count these as part of my cross training?

I will do what I need to do in order to do what I want to do.

Is it ok to do the same thing every single time on cross train day like for example riding a stationary bike?

Welcome to the group, Betty.

It sounds like you have some good cross training going. Just remember to listen to your body and if it says to take a rest day, then do so. Cross training is good for you, mind, body and soul. I love that you are incorporating yoga into your routine. That will help with keeping your muscles in good working order as you will be stretching them which is essential as you increase the duration of your walks and workouts. Be sure that you do upper body and core in your workouts as those are the areas that assist you as you add distance.

It all depends on how much you want to track on the site. If you want it all here go ahead and add it in cross training, including the yoga. If it's not that important to have all your workouts in one place, just track them on paper so you know what you did when. Either way tracking helps with knowing if you need to change something or can up what you are doing. Just think about adding a "how I'm feeling today" note.

Hope this helps.

Janet, I just started this group yesterday (walked 20 minutes) & have a question concerning my weekly routine. I usually attend Curves 3 days a week (MWF), then I also walk on those same days. Currently, I am doing a beginner Yoga DVD (30 min) & a beginner Full Body Workout (15 min). 2 days a week (T,Th). Is there anything that I should change?

Also, when I entered my walk time yesterday I didn't enter any time for Curves on this site, but I did on my fitness tracker. Should I list it on here? When I enter my Cross-Training time today would I list the total for Yoga & Full Body Workout...or just the Full Body Workout?

Thanks......Betty emoticon

Asking if anyone else is doing their walking for physical therapy from injury or surgery - using walker, crutches, canes? ... really wanting another with similar situation for more realistic time and effort encouragements. I finally hit the 2 miles per hour with two canes 2 weeks ago but it hurt me and I haven't seen that rate again for a full hour since then. emoticon I hit a five day depression and beginning to crawl back up out of the duldrums . emoticon

I have a question about cross training days - should I be logging distance for those as well, or just on walking days? For example if I'm on a stationary bike or rowing machine, it will be much farther distance and I don't want it to mess things up thinking I walked way further than I would've!

When I track my walking on the challenge page it transfers to a different day on my fitness tracker. So, I have to go to that day and delete it and track it on the correct day. Kind of a pain. I thought it would transfer to the tracker on the right day.

Angela,

On cross train days, you make the choice. If you are currently comfortable with 15-20 minutes that is fine, but if you wish to do more and can, go for it.

And yes, you can switch around days to fit your schedule. After all, this is 5K Your Way.

Today is my first day of training and I am wondering on the rest/cross-train days how much time should I cross-train? Is it ok to change a walking day with a rest/cross-train day to fit better into my schedule?

Thank you,
Angela

LIHAGEMAN ~ You have two options.

First of all you can just get better and continue on, even back up and repeat a week or two. You'll enter the repeated week(s) info into your fitness page and when you catch up to the 5th week, enter the new week info into the log.

Option 2 is to click on "leave this program" at the bottom of the page. When you are ready to return, you can restart the program by rejoining.

What you enter in your log is imported to your fitness page. If you don't want double entries log it only in one place. If you want it to show in your 5K log enter it there only, if you don't want it included in the log, enter it only on you fitness page.

If you get multiple entries on your fitness page, you can always delete them or edit them if necessary.

Hopefully this helps.

I have joined a walking 5k and am trying to follow the training program. I have already been walking 5 miles/day, 6 days a week. That is until this week. It is very frigid here in Indiana and I have gotten a Leslie Sansone DVD to walk with instead. Yesterday, when I plugged in my DVD exercise, which amounted to 4 miles, on the 5K race training program, it added the 4 miles to what was already included on my Fitness Tracking page. This messed up what I actually tracked on my Fitness page. I'm not sure how to track on both pages without it messing up the numbers on my Fitness page.

The Lord is my joy and my strength.

KMMBRLYGLBLT ~ It sounds like you are ahead of the game, so go ahead and continue on with week 2. What I would suggest is to use the training plan to better your speed and then do your usual 5K distance as a long training once a week, keeping it to a relaxed pace.

Good morning all. I managed to finish my week 1 training and I am well above the required amounts given. I figured I should start at the beginning so I could work up to the running 5k program. Last week would have been week 2 but I was ill most the week and recovering the rest of it so I was unable to get to the week 2 workouts.

Would you recommend I start over with week 1 or just continue on to week 2 as I would have done last week. I'm already walking 6k's in an hour 3X a week as part of my routine workouts to begin with (when I am not sick) and hopefully by next week I will be in good enough form to start my cross training programs 2X a week.

Hope everyone is having a lovely start to the week..

Do not ever let anyone tell you your not good enough. Find within yourself the center that makes you rise above all else and you will find true happiness. Everything else plays second and it all falls into line as it should be.

HOPE2HOPE - Increasing speed while walking or running has to do with foot turnover, not - contrary to popular thought - longer strides. You actually want to shorten your stride so you can lift your foot quicker and get it through the forward swing to the next step. Posture and arm swing as well as core strength have a lot to do with speed. Here is a link to one of the blogs I wrote when my local spark team was training for a race. It should help you figure out how to go faster.

Patti - If you want to do the program again, then you can leave it anytime after you complete it and then re-start when you are ready.

They were supposed to be working on a 10K program, but I have heard nothing about it in a very long time, so I'm guessing it's been put on a back burner.

If you want to train for a 10K, you can always just double the time/distance from this program, adding a week here and there if you feel it is necessary.

Have fun with your upcoming 5K and enjoy your walking.

Hi Janet,

I've been reading the replies to the question of starting on the 5K program again. I have completed a virtual 5K and am signed up for one in two weeks. Should I "leave the program" once I've done my 5K so I can do it again later if I want? Should I "leave the program" once I do my 5K? Is there a 10K training program?

Hi Carol,
I too have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Everything leveled out for me when I started the day with a small breakfast, protein smoothie or something that included a fruit, a protein and a Carb. Then throughout the day try for 4 more small meals or 3 meals and 2 snacks.
If you look at Pre-Diabetic Sparkers team you will have some good support and search the site for articles on the subject. I'm sure there are plenty of them... emoticon

F8CONE8 - Verify with your doctor, but I would suggest taking a snack with you like grapes or raisins, and maybe some almonds or peanuts. Also make sure you have a little something before you go out. Finally, use a sport drink if you are going to be out over 30 minutes.

Do check with your doctor though, he/she might have better options for you.

Today I did a strenuous 2 miles in 45 minutes. I included a steep hill as our race course has 2 such killer hills. When I got home I felt shaky so I tested my Blood Glucose and I was at 62 which is pretty low.... Any suggestions on how to stay more even? I am pre-diabetic and have had hypoglycemic events where I passed out.

There are different types of interval training:

Standard - running/walking at speed for a set distance followed by a slower pace for a set distance recovery.

Pyramid or ladders - doing ascending of decending distance each followed by a set distance recovery.

Fartlek - Unstructured speed session - some do this based on time rather than distance, but the idea is to change things up as you go.

Hills - going up the hill at race pace or faster and then easily go down.

The difference between intervals and repeats is with repeats you should be able to recover completely, but with intervals you have a set time/distance for your recovery and then fully recovered or not, you go hard again. Usually it's easier for walkers to recover so it shouldn't take as much time/distance. Also, sometimes telling a person to go easy until recoverd from the speed work is counter productive as I've seen some go two to three times the speed distance to "recover." So that is why I suggest a distance for recovery. So yes, that would be very much like standard interval training.

BJPENNY70 - You can repeat the program. You need to leave the program (not the team) and then rejoin. This should reset your log and restart the emails that come with the program.

As for repeating the same trainng, that is up to you. I would suggest that you not drop back to the actual week one time/distances as you are definitely beyond that. What I would suggest is that you work on increasing your speed by adding some speed workouts. Runners do this and walkers can, too. Take one training day per week and do a repeats. Set a distance (it's easier if you have a track you can use. Do the distance say 100m (300ft) at a quick pace, then slow down for 50 to 100m, then repeat. Do this 4 to 6 times to start. You will find your speed will increase and so will your fitness. You can also add hills once a week to help you as well. Change the surface you walk on and the trails you use to make things fresh.

Have fun.

I did the 5k walk training last year and did the Sparkpeople 5k. As part of my recovery I decided to do the 5k walk training again. I was allowed to sign up for it again. Why are we not allowed to repeat the training and have it scheduled? I printed out the training schedule from the last time and did it anyway and did another 5k, even though we aren't allowed to repeat it. I am not physically able to do the next walk/ jog yet. I have also done another 5k walk that was official "Habitat for Humanity." I am planning on doing another 5k walk one town over called the "Harbour Lights 5k walk. I do need the practice. So do you think just doing the same practice over and over is a waste or do I just walk for practice on my own?

So sorry I'm a little behind with my response. I was on a family vacation and while I expected to have internet to keep up with emails, it turned out the place we stayed had spotty internet at the best, and I couldn't seem to connect. But I'm back now.

TASHALNZ - I don't believe Spark has the program itself set up to change it to KM, but as I'm sure you know you can set your fitness page to metric. As for a 5K training being in miles, that's a good question. It goes along with why 5K, 10K and then 13.1 miles for a half and 26.2 for a full marathon. I guess we would have to ask the experts... lol. There is a quick conversion on the "Walking Tips" thread. www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/t

COASTALS - You should have received the email already. You might want to "reset" your week to week one on the log page and see if that generates it. The only other idea would be to leave the program and then re-start it. You can re-enter any training info to catch up. Just be aware that it might double up on your fitness page.

I'm on week one of training and I haven't received any weekly emails yet. When do they start, I'm looking forward to the emails for more tips on the walking program?

In the 5K Your Way Walking Training Program, it says on Week 1, Day 2, to walk 1 Mile. I'm in New Zealand and we use the metric system. In my settings it is correctly set to metric. Is there any way to change it on the program?
A program that is labeled 5K and then has Miles seems a bit confusing.

Not on the training log. You can however delete it on your fitness page and re-enter it on the correct day if you wish.

Is there some way to edit the date that you logged your training program if you accidentally logged it for the wrong day?

BECKAGIN - I have no knowledge about the fitbit and how it interacts with Spark. I do know that sometimes you can change things through your fitness page but beyond that I'm sorry I can't help.

Fitbit users do you know?

I will have google "Fitbit" as I've not heard of that product.

When I enter my miles and minutes for cycling the report always assumes my speed to be 10 mph. But I am not there yet. My speed averages between 8 and 9 mph. Does anyone happen to know if there is some way to adjust this setting?

For me these videos are suspect with regards to the accuracy of the mileage they represent. This was very evident when a beginning walker posted on another team that she walked 4 miles in 30 minutes. I thought it was a typo, but having read reviews many people who have used the program with pedometers, or even on treadmills find that the mileage shown on the video isn't even close to the actual numbers they end up with... the dvd is very optomistic. So while they can be a great workout, personally, I would not use them to represent a certain distance for the program, but that is up to you. My suggestion is use it for timed days or cross-training instead.

SPARKBJOK - you don't have to get rid of the fitbit, but you do need to enter your distance/time on your training log - the training log entries are what get you your award when you have completed the program. Because of this you will have the double entry on your fitness log so just continue to delete the one you don't want. While we love the auto-transfer of information from one page to another there can be issues like this.

I just joined this walking program and have a question. I realized when I completed the first two days that the activity was going to my fitness page. That's fine except that I have a Fitbit that automatically registers on the fitness page - hence, double entries. So I deleted them and just kept the Fitbit numbers. Can I still check off each day I accomplish or do I have to get rid of the Fitbit (that's not going to happen). Thanks for any insight.
