This was my experience:

I started doing the couch potato to 5K. Got really frustrated, because my shins started hurting almost immediately! Used ice on them and that helped. The next run day, again, virtually the same. Did this for about a week or two.

Thought about how old my runners were, (too ashamed to admit it!) and went and bought the best that I could afford. I went to a place where they assess your walk, your foot et al. End result? New Asics gels. No pain since then. (Also, I got lucky since mine were on sale. And I LOVE them! It really makes a difference having the best equipment you can afford)

I want to add that I also did a few weeks work on standing on my heels and raising my toes as a super set to my calf raises. I figured I had been strengthening my calves, but did nothing to the front of my legs which seemed unbalanced.

Good luck with your journey, and listen to your body.

I just wrapped it with an ace bandage and if doesn't hurt any more......thinking back this is the same part that I had a hairline fracture when I was a kid. It never hurt when I was running, just the day after today. I am going to start wearing an ace bandage on it when I run to see if that helps for the day after.

If it continues to hurt when you walk, in a couple more days, I'd suggest you see a doctor. And if it's painful, when running, stop! Does it feel like a muscle problem or a bone problem?

Anyone have tips/trips for people starting out running? I am working my way up to being able to do a full hour of running. I am using the couch to 5k type of plan where I run a little bit more every time, BUT I am sore not too bad though.

My right calf/ankle the back side of my calf area I think it is the fibula (sorry not too good with the anatomy) it hurts when I flex it IE when I walk if feels like I have a bruise there.

I am just trying to see if there is anything I can do to help with that.

I have been lucky never to have experienced shin splints so I really don't have anything to offer as my advice.
But here is an article that may be helpful as it has some treatment suggestions.

I have a question for all of you. I am in Week 2, just finished Day 2. And I have the worst pain in my shins when I am running. I know this is caused by my weight, but how do I get it to stop? (Other than stop running :-)) I am enjoying this program, but it is literally killing me when I am doing it. Thanks for your help.
