Yeah, I didn't want to bring it up, but it IS rather controversial:

ran.org/problem-palm-oil-factsheet

Big business is literally running people off their land to harvest this.

i've been reading that palm oil is not environmentally friendly in the way it is harvested. i'll have to read more about that.

at the costco here the nutivia 1.6 L size is $17. at my local store the same size is $33. which sucks cuz the costco is over an hour away and i never get down that way.

Yeah, I had the same reaction with plain eggs. My mouth expects salty butter or bacon grease.

However, if I make an omelet with peppers, tomatoes, and onions but no cheese it tastes fine with coconut oil.

Thanks for all of the responses to my questions. I tried using CO to cook my eggs in this AM and it didn't taste quite right to me. I think it's because I associate coconut with sweet, so savory threw me off. I think I need to try cooking with it more before I form a final opinion.

Thanks Birgit, Maybe I'll just stick with the coconut oil. My store also has palm oil that is not red, that might be an alternative too, more eye pleasing anyhow. I'm happy with the CO though, I use it for everything. I buy the Nutivia EV CO at Costco.. I like it, it has kind of a coconutty aroma to it. But... if I get a chance, I'll try the palm oil, I know the market was selling it in small bulk amounts, if I find a small container, might give it a whirl... (The price has probably gone up now that it's gaining in popularity)..

I do appreciate the info tho... thanks again!

i love coconut oil. i have been doing the oil pulling for about 3 weeks now. i think my teeth are whiter and there were a couple of long term plaque spots on 2 teeth on the bottom against the gum. they are gone. plus it feels good. i use about a tsp of oil, so, it's not that expensive.

then of course i use it all the time for cooking. and as a moisturizer. love, love, love it!

i need to find a cheaper way to buy it though. i go through it like crazy. and my poor olive oil that i used to use all the time has just been sitting there, unloved. now the only thing i use olive oil for is salad dressing.

Betty,
I've used it once for stir-frying and it works fine, it's mostly getting used to the red color. I don't like the smell of it the way I like the smell of coconut oil but it dissipates when heated, just like coconut oil. I paid less (although not much less) for mine than for the virgin coconut oil but I bought in bulk (1 gallon).

I love coconut oil! I usually bake with it, which is yummy. My friend recently told me about that oil pulling thing! The coconut oil I buy is kinda expensive, so I definitely won't be spitting it out emoticon

Birgit - Let me know how you like the red palm oil, would you? I want to buy some, but am hesitant because of the price without knowing how it works... Thanks...

Red palm oil is a great choice for heating at very high temperatures as the smoking point is much higher than coconut oil. I bought my first gallon and am about to start using it.

If I remember, it was palm oil that the theatres used - it's also the oil that some of the taco fast food places fried their tortillas in (which made them taste so good).

Now, they have decided the red palm oil falls into about the same category as coconut oil and is good to use. I've not tried any yet however, I see my local grocery carries it. Might have to get some. I do use coconut oil to pop popcorn in, it's wonderful!!

At one time theaters used real coconut oil, and that's what gave it that great smell and taste and texture. In the old days it would have been pure virgin coconut oil, but at some point they hydrogenated it to change the melting point (and add trans fats!) and put that weird coloring in. Pah!

It can be hydrogenated to increase the melting temperature, and that stuff should be avoided - it contains trans fats.

I cook almost exclusively in coconut oil (or bacon renderings) - and no, I don't think that yellow gunk in theaters is the same thing. If it is, they've done something to it! My coco oil is clear or slightly white.
I not only use the oil, I love coconut manna too. Pretty tasty alongside other peanut butter substitutes (nut butters).
I don't measure how much I use on a daily basis... but I buy it from Amazon by the gallon.
That should give you an idea! LOL

I bought some awhile back but haven't tried it yet. When I told my brother I bought some he thinks that's the same oil the movie theaters use for that marvelous popcorn aroma effect?? Is it?? I noticed the orange stuff they use doesn't look anything like coconut oil to me.

Half a tablespoon in each cup of coffee, times about 4 cups of coffee a day, so about 2 tablespoons. My husband hates coconut so we rarely cook with it, except for one newer Paleo recipe that he actually enjoyed for chicken strips dipped in almond meal and pan fried in coconut oil. I need to start watching calories as well as nutrient ratios, so I actually cut back on the oil. I was probably putting closer to a full T in my coffee initially.

I hope that I can always afford this stuff and find it easily available, because it really has done wonders for my mental clarity, more than anything it's done for my waistline!

I would use it as much as you can stand it. I use olive oil and butter, about 6 Tbsp. combined, and only stop there because the chicken and veggies get greasy if I do more. Same with eggs for breakfast. This ups my fat to 65 % or more, which is where I like it.

Since fat does nothing to blood sugars, fat is unlimited, except for this reason. It is harmless, unless you believe it has negative health effects. I have a 105 cholesterol, and low BP, so I don't think it is a problem.

Eat what you feel comfortable with, and if you have any fears,, get tested regular to see if it causes any health issues. I can off advice, or personal opinion, but you shouldn't just trust me either. Get tested, see for yourself. Make sure, and only trust results, and yourself. Your doctor can help you interpret any tests, and explain what they mean, and if the results are as good for you, as they have been for me, not only will you feel more confident eating higher fat, your doctor will be happy with the results, even if he/she is unhappy with your diet.

My doctor hate that I eat eggs daily, and consume 1200 mg cholesterol ( 4 X the RDA ), but loves my 105 cholesterol, and the fact that I stopped my cholesterol meds a year ago, as well as my diabetes meds 4 years ago. Those results give ME confidence, and make MY doctor happy.

You need to know for yourself that it works for YOU.

I re-discovered my container of Nutiva EV coconut oil yesterday and have a few questions. How much do you consume each day? How are you using it? I started eating 1 tbsp with my AM protein shake and want to build up from there.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Karen
