Just popping in to say hi to everyone! I've been working 12 hour days and there won't be a break in the insanity until the second week in March. Hugs to everyone and keep on being fabulous!

I had Dr. appointment today and blood pressure was good and I have lost 5 pounds! I must need a new scale. However, I have inflamed fascia on my foot. You fix one thing and something else breaks!

It is rainy and cold here in the beautiful Texas hill country.

Holly! How is your little baby? I've been there with renal/urinary cat stuff and hope some dietary changes can help out with Nipper. Hugs.
We are always delighted when you have a chance to post! No worries when real life gets in the way - that happens with all of us. :)

Oola - The other thread is specifically for an activity challenge. This is indeed *the* place for conversation and team support! If you don't want to participate in a monthly activity challenge, you can ignore the other thread entirely (or just post numbers at the end of the month if you like).

I feel you, being a multi-team leader myself. That's the best aspect of teams though - participating in what works for us, and ignoring what doesn't!

Linda: Swelling sounds persistent and I hope you and your doctor have more approaches you can try. Your determination inspires me! I hope you're feeling some positive changes despite the number on the scale.

I've got a friend in Hospice and it's breaking my heart. If I am not here as much for the next while, that's probably why. I will do my best though.

Love yourselves as best as you can today - and everyday. Hugs

Discovered that Sweet Habanero Cholula Sauce is great on sliced roasted sweet potatoes. Sweet with a kick. I have all flavors of Cholula and use it instead of salt. It is very spicy, if you don't like spicy, it won't work for you!

Holly, I hope Nipper is all right now!

Oolala, I don't exercise as much as I should lately because of swelling from meds. I go see the doctor again this week.

My kittes go to vet today. Fun times... emoticon

All kinds of systems can affect “calories out,” though water plays a major role in weight, too. I feel for ya! Yet I have also read that quality of food and even more so exercise support healthy longevity regardless of weight. We are on your side!

Ate quite substantial meals yesterday. Let me see how the urges go today, though I feel I might be ready to stand up to them.

I married into a family of hunters. One family reunion was spent at a place filled with taxidermy. I had the creeps the whole time. So sad. Glad your sister saw the light, Holly!

I have been sticking to the plan and have not lost any more weight, and I am overweight. My calories have not gone over. Must be the medication, my age and health. I am hoping for some weight to come off the healthier I get.

Sorry I've been incommunicado a lot lately. Work is crazy and will probably stay that way for the next couple of weeks. I go to New Jersey the first week in March, but then things should slow down a bit. This morning I have to take my fat kitty boy, Nipper, to the vet. He's having trouble peeing and I'm worried he might have a blockage.
In better news, my sister has finally turned the corner and gone vegan!! I'm doing the snoopy dance! She lives on 42 acres in the Blue Ridge of VA and has always hunted deer on her property. No more lives shall be lost for venison stew!!

Tx! My eating stayed to the sources I aspire to. It was just amounts and time. It is possible I need to abandon my project not to buy any starches until I use up my pantry/ fridge foods. It is making meal planning especially tricky, leading to a few days of unintentional lower calorie amounts than I intended. But I will try a few days of higher calories first.

I hope we keep this thread going for daily keeping up with each other. I can feel so scattered with lots of different threads to try to follow. I run three other teams already. Out of curiosity, what would the March thread be for?

The 2020 honeymoon of my amended eating plan has been getting challenged the last few days. It has been years since I have felt as challenged at night as I have been the last couple of nights. I am planning for more calories at lunch and dinner for today and possibly tomorrow to try to assuage the brain's fear that we are entering a famine.

The bean dip did not taste like the ones in the little cans, mainly because I used low sodium beans and added no salt. My seasoning was Cholula Sauce, Chipotle flavor, lemon juice, garlic powder and onion powder.

Still have swelling with new med. Going to doctor again next week. I will not live like this! It will be nice the day I get off meds or at least the lowest possible dose.

Thank you so much, Linda and Sharon - deeply appreciated. She's back to work this week, but exhausted the rest of the time. Liquids!

Pinto bean hummus? Intriguing! How did it differ from bean dip in taste?

Oh! I made a quick and dirty vegetable soup last week from broth cubes, frozen veggies and spices (I may have sauteed some onions and garlic, too). And then I put in a teaspoon of miso and cubed some absolutely raw tofu - like it looks in miso soup! It tasted fine that way, was so easy and bumped up the protein (as well as calcium, magnesium, iron and phosphorus).

That's three dishes that make protein less of a concern for me. Now, onto fiber....

Night, best wishes, thoughts and prayers to your wife.

I made soup last week, thinking about making it again today.

I have not tried millet.

I made some hummus from pinto beans yesterday. In Texas, it would be bean dip! emoticon I also cooked some spinach pasta and made the vegan cheese sauce, but something went wrong. I doubled the recipe and perhaps did something wrong? It came out more like mashed potatoes and carrots (which ARE the main ingredients). Maybe we will just eat it that way, like mashed potatoes. Hmmm... now thinking about what to have for dinner.

NIGHT, get well wishes to your wife. Urinary infections are nothing to mess with. It can go into sepsis. Im glad she saw a doctor. Chili and a vegetable marinate are great ideas. I havent made soup in a while either.

We usually have on hand a bean salad or Texas caviar. Easy to have a bit when youre hungry.

Hi all! Happy Tuesday! I've got some catching up to do but will try not to get too long with responses.

First - Holly!!! Oh, honey. I hear you and feel you with foot pain. Be good to you! Will you see a doctor if symptoms don't resolve? Hughughug -

And hugs to everyone else who has pain and swelling and "banged-up" issues. Much healing to everyone.

Holly, Oolala and Linda: thanks for the tips on farro - will try on my next soup. Going to explore millet first. Suggestions, anyone? I hear toasting it first is good...

Good job with cross-training and plans for water aerobics, Mrs L! I love water aerobics and water jogging and now you've got me wanting to go back... :)

Oolala, are you a uke player? I play autoharp - and should play it more often. Are you in a group? I did a comedy class at the senior center and it was also scattered!

Linda, FWIW I agree with you. I do think that chemicals and fertilizers play a big part in what people interpret as wheat allergies. (Whoops - I see that Sharon mentioned that as well) Have you read articles about people going to Europe, eating bread, and having no problems at all?

Sharon - I love tagine! I make a lentil soup that is similar but going to go search for your recipe. Thank you!

I've been a little absent. My wife had a fever for a week and (finally) went to the doctor as it wasn't coming down. Turns out she had a kidney infection. Eeeesh. She's on the mend, but weak.

I am finally getting on the more active track and am inspired by you all so much. Been making a big pot of chili and a big bowl of marinated garbazos/vegetables per week. Really helps me to be able to grab things that are healthful and protein-rich.

Much joy and good wishes, everyone.

Holly, hope you are feeling better today. Heel pain, I am not going to make any guesses.

Oolala, yes, when you get older, it is always something. With me it is, anyway.

Gram, hope your tendinitis gets better soon.

My swelling has gone down more, but still have some. I go to doc again next week, maybe another medication change? I hate taking prescriptions, but sometimes we have to.

I just had tagine on Friday night. Probably way richer than I needed but boy, was it good! and I had leftovers.

I've eaten out twice more since and have been pleased at the reasonable portions. I ate the whole thing both times and didn't feel stuffed. Though I sometimes count on leftovers, but I was fine with the meals as they were.

Swelling is painful! I'm glad it's better.

I was doing organizing and had pulled some things out of a kitchen cabinet. As I went to walk over a pile, my toe felt like it barely nicked the upside down lid of an Instantpot. Oh, my gosh, did it hurt! Later the flesh around the front of the top joint of that toe is black and blue. I could feel it every time I moved in bed last night, but it didn't keep me awake. It's a very minor injury, and I"m grateful, but it's disturbing how bad it looks from what felt like a tap. I must have hit it at just the right angle. Or I'm just old and this is how it's going to be!

My swelling is a lot better, but still some. Mrs. L, I don't eat salt. Of course, there is hidden salt in foods, but doing my own cooking cuts down on that. I did not eat anything salty the two days it began.

Yesterday I made up a recipe for tomato/ roasted pepper sauce for pasta. Easy. A can of no salt stewed tomatoes, a jar of roasted red peppers, 2T. nutritional yeast, 1 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp garlic, 1 tsp basil. Blend, heat and serve. I served over veggie rotini and added steamed broccoli and cauliflower. Yummy!

Sharon, I will most definitely checkout that tagine recipe! I love tagine.

Linda, I'm so glad you were able to get your medication switched quickly.

I've done something terribly bad to my foot and I have no idea what or how. I walked over 6 miles yesterday, but had no problems. Later in the day, I had just been sitting in my cushy chair watching the Wicked Kitchen's YouTube channel and when I went to get up, I stepped on the floor and my heel was so painful I almost hit the floor. I don't know where the pain came from, it didn't hurt at all while I was sitting. Now it's just constant. I'm actually using a cane to walk. This is going to kill my mileage this week.

Linda, sorry to hear about your painful high blood pressure symptoms. Drink that water, girl, to dilute the affect of the sodium hidden in food. Now that I rarely cook with salt, going to a restaurant means the food tastes too salty. Years ago, I remember someone telling me that eating celery tasted salty for them and they used it as a snack and in recipes to take the place of salt. I'm just flabbergasted to see how much salt is in canned goods--since I use a lot of canned tomatoes when my summer frozen stash is gone, it's a concern. Soft drinks are also terrible.

I will check it out.

Gram, I have had high blood pressure since age 26 (maybe before then!) and salt is a big culprit for me. Restaurants overdo it on just everything. Watch the cooking shows and they add it very liberally.

The last two days my ankles and legs swelled up like an elephant and my doctor had me come in. It was my new medication. Now I am on another. The swelling is almost gone. Sheesh! It was also painful. I have the type of blood pressure that is inherited.

I have also read that some peoples problem with gluten has to do with the Roundup sprayed on the wheat fields before harvest. I do realize celiacs disease is more severe than an intolerance.

Linda I do not have a problem with salt. My cardiologist doesnt want me to cut much below 1500-2000 mg daily since I usually have low blood sodium. I cook most food though and eat little processed.

I admit there are days I get tired of cooking and this is one.

Oolala, you are a renaissance woman! I do art and singing, have been in community theater, but it has been a long time.

I don't have a gluten problem. My main problem is salt and it is hidden in much of what we eat.

I read recently that some say the problem with gluten for a lot of people (not the ones with serious issues) is that our gut biome is different for various reasons. Microbes do a lot of digesting of a lot of foods for us. I do not do anything special at this point but I think the veggies I have been eating for years has helped. It is true that the wheat we eat is different now, too. I limit wheat products for other reasons. I limit nearly all baked flour foods, preferring “wet” starches. I think they are more satiating.

I am trying an acting class today with the man who runs the senior improv class I have gone to a few sessions of. That group is very scattered in its thinking. They often do completely different things than the director set the scene for, and it just sounds illogical or flat. This is the same director and it turns out he has had a lot of experience. Some of the actors will be the same people. Maybe having a script will focus is more.

Ukulele? What fun! My SIL has all types of musical instruments, but lately she plays her ukulele mostly.

Truly I believe very few people really have a problem with gluten. It's mostly hype (just my humble opinion). Mankind has eaten wheat for thousands of years and only recently we have a gluten problem? Really?

Farro is actually a kind of wheat. I like it! I also cook whole rye berries, which I think are even chewier even when they are truly cooked. I love them. To me, they are like little potatoes with an outer casing that I love bursting with my teeth. They never stick together, though that is not a deal breaker. When I get through with my eating-down-the-stores challenge- self -imposed-, they will be one of the first starches I buy and cook. If I ever find out that gluten is a problem for me, I will be very sad, as I will really miss my gluten grains.

Will be getting a spinach salad at a restaurant tonight where a bi-monthly ukulele meeting happens. Not ideal, but their menu choices are as you can imagine. It's got a great stage and is relatively central, so there is no way they are changing the venue.

Farro is nutty and chewy. I like it, some don't.

Mrs. L,. you go! That is great.

I have been cleaning things out. After the experience with the accumulation at in-laws house, I decided to pare down a lot of stuff. We don't have kids. So, when older, I will be asking nieces and nephews if they want anything.

It's my cross training day for my 5k walk/jog challenge and I called a friend I hadn't seen in half a year and made arrangements to meet for water aerobics. Also did yoga this morning , jumping jacks and some weights.

I already see a bit more energy from this challenge and am using it to get some projects around the house done. Today, it's the dreaded sock drawer. Unmatched ones will go in the rag drawer!

Farro is proably most like barley. About the same size and texture when cooked. I've often used it in soups when I'm out of barley, and vice versa. The flavor is a bit nutty.

Good to read everyone's posts!

I'd like to learn more about this farro stuff. I've seen it but never tried it. Is it like bulghar? Quinoa? Something else?

I could and that is a great idea. I have been better for a couple of days, so back on track.

Made the "cheese" sauce last night. I like the one with potatoes and carrots better than the oatmeal and roasted red pepper.

I made farro salad last week, from the FOK fall issue. It was quite good.

It was so cold here this morning that I could see my breath and had to wear my fleece jacket, but by noon it was 70, sunny, and beautiful. I walked a mile on my lunch break and another 5 miles when I got home today. I hope everyone had a fabulous Monday!

Mrs. L, I feel you. We can get it back, I hear. Maybe not where it used to be.

Gram, I have been bad lately. Maybe now that the house is emptied, I can get on a regular cooking schedule. Dh is an awful saboteur, as well. He brings home sweets. I ask him to hide them, but sometimes in times of stress, I join in. It has been stressful lately. Now the estate sale is over and people are going to clean and fix up the house. All that is left is closing and collecting the money!

Dh and his sister are renting a bed and breakfast in April for us, there in that small town as a family get together and a way to say good bye, finally.

Yesterday, I cooked healthy stuff. I made a farro salad (farro grain, spinach, tomatoes, black olives, lemon and fat free raspberry dressing), cabbage soup with potatoes and carrots and brown rice.

MRSL good for you doing the challenge. And I second the advice to younger people. Sometimes I jog the last bit of my walk. Not a pretty sight but I can get my heart rate up.

OOLALA what good mindfulness and reflection. Its so important for us all to be honest with ourselves.

Linda I bought some dairy free milk chocolate chips today. Im using them in a black bean brownie. I couldnt use regular ones because of my allergy to dairy. Ill let you know if the brownies are any good.

My goal this year is to particpate in a local Weekly 5km Timed Run they have every saturday. I don't normally join challenges (but should) however I've joined the 5k Walk/run/jog challenge. I love the interactive calendar that has tips to help you. I'm only doing 4 minutes of walking/2 minutes of jogging, but I'm hoping to get in better shape. This is still better than I was four years ago after many years of not running at all.

For you younger people out there: Keep jumping, running and riding a bicycle as you are able so you don't lose the ability.

Oolala, love your insight and your realization. I have to have those occasional treats. As long as I am going in the right direction, mostly losing, I can add a pound or two on occasion. For me, due to medication, it is harder to lose weight. That is the main reason I am concentrating on health. If I could get off the med that slows my metabolism, that would be heavenly. If I never do, I am learning to accept the me that I am. I will always stay vegan. I have not strayed from that, unless it is milk chocolate! Oy ve! It is a rare treat, however.

I had what I call my turnaround about 10 years ago. For awhile before that-I can’t remember how long-I got to the point where I just had to say to myself to stop being dishonest. And at that point, what that meant was, stop pretending like you’re actually going to do anything different from what you were doing right now. I was constantly fretting over my eating, telling myself I should eat differently, but really knowing that if a desire to eat sweet foods came over me, and even to eat way a lot, I was going to do it. That conflict was just tearing me down. Some people say when they come to that kind of realization, all of a sudden, The desires go away, but they didn’t for me. And even though I was not chastising myself all the time, a lot of things that I had learned or heard over the years finally came together, along with an eating plan that sounded reasonable to me, and I determined that I was going to do it no matter how hard it was, but, I did choose one that I thought was only reasonably hard. It was very much more because I could not bear the idea that I would compulsively over eat for the rest of my life. That was way more distressful to me than how much I weighed, which was at least 40 pounds more than I weigh now. Now I continue to build on that.

I feel very grateful to be ending the week strong.

Well, Texas has its share of old hippies, but maybe not in Beaumont! emoticon I grew up in Dallas.

I think it is my age, as well. I am a boomer.

I would love to lose weight. I have been concentrating on my health mainly. 50 pounds would be good. I don't like carrying all this around.

I have never tried black lentils, but have cooked the red and I like them!

Hello and good thoughts, all!

I'm trying, Oolala, but I am not trying super hard right now. It's always a struggle for me to follow a healthful path, increase activity and choose the right foods, without the negativity and self judgment (and all the awful diet-culture stuff) that goes with it.

So I always work on a balance of striving to make the right choices for food, activity and being gentle and increasing care for myself and dismantling hate. It's a process. It's a journey.

Hugs for congestion, Linda. Hope it clears. I love that you're a Bohemian! I was raised in the Bay Area in the 70s and love free-flowing art and music. Doesn't suit me personally but I'm very drawn to it.

Sharon - I admire you *so much* for the path you've been on and your success! I hope you take time to appreciate your strength and determination. :)

I have used baby black lentils, which keep their shape so nicely. I have a recipe for North African Lentil Soup which uses baby black ones, though I've used all kinds.
This soup, by the way, is a nice change from typical lentil soups. It's pretty much standard ingredients with the addition of allspice and a few chopped prunes. The prunes don't make it too sweet, but add a subtle and interesting flavor. It's finished with fresh parsley and mint. Yum!

Red lentils cook really fast! I do not know how anyone has them keep their shape after cooking.

It seems to me from my 12+ years on spark that there is a lot of luck in getting that last 10 pounds off. Especially after a previous loss. It can take a calorie count and precision that proves hard to live with. Thankfully, it’s hardly ever essential to good health. They say the most positive effects happen in the first 5 to 10% of weight loss. I’m sure there are exceptions to this. I hope you find the magic combo.

I would love to lose up to 10 lbs. I have lost over 40 lbs since 2010 and when I went on WFPB last fall I lost 8-9 lbs right away. Now I am stuck. I am more interested in health at this point.

Styles, mine would be boring. I need to break out a bit. Being short does limit some styles.

For the first time I just cooked small red lentils. What a mess. They stuck to the strainer then boiled over. I will add some to soup tonight and save some for another project. Brown lentils have never given me these problems.

I have to admit that bohemian and Texas don't go together in my mind, a high school friend's husband from Beaumont would corroborate that. They moved to Utah, but are outliers there, too. Then I saw you live in an Austin suburb. Mystery solved. But don't be afraid to school me! I"m probably stepping all over someone's toes. emoticon

It is true that some Blue Zones eat some dead animals, though it's more like on a monthly or even yearly basis. It sounds like much of their habit outside the U.S. was dictated by availability; as the areas have gotten more exposure to other foods, habits have changed, as have the consequences. And here we are, going the other way.

I lived for a short time in Loma Linda, the only U. S. Blue Zone, back in the late 70's. It was easy to find tofu there! I experimented with it even then. Talk about being on the fringe.

How many people here are actively trying to lose weight? Are you using any other strategies besides veganism to get to that? You can decline to answer.

Sounds good Mrs. L.

Yes, Nightglow I do feel better, but still have congestion. Maybe the pollen?

Last night I made an interesting dish, fettucine with Bchamel sauce. I used evaporated soy milk. Then added asparagus and peas. Even though there was no sugar in anything, it tasted a bit sweet. Maybe the evaporated soy milk? It was good, however.

We are going back tomorrow and Saturday to the never ending estate sale. There is a nice wing back chair that we want, cannot believe it did not sell.

Yes I am bohemian, Gram. Think flowing tunics of different colors and long necklaces. Always wearing sandals (with pedicure, however). Some would call me an "old hippie." Yet, I have changed a lot since those days. My old name on Sparkpeople was BOHEMIANCAT. I have always been called "sweet" because of my looks.

I am trying the following recipe to make feta out of tofu. I know it won't be exactly like it but I'd be happy to have a littlle zip in my veggie gyros in pita. I finally found plain vegetable based yogurt that I didn't have to make at Publix (kite hill) so it's easier to make the taziki sauce)

Happy Wednesday, everyone! And welcome, Kerilm!! I hope you are enjoying the team and our many lovely, interesting and delightful members!! :)

Congrats on the good health report, Sharon!

I'm jealous of your San Diego weather, Oolala! Good luck on avoiding those thrift stores!

Holly, I used to get VegNews, but it was filled with so many treats that I just got hungry every time I got an issue. :) I did find this recipe on their website, but probably not the same thing:
vegnews.com/2018/12/tomato-and-cocon
ut
-soup

Your soup sounds yummy, Linda! I want to make the same now. Are you feeling better? Hope so!

Mrs and Sharon - I love flaxseed! I use a power blend of 1 TBS ground flax, 1 TBS chia seeds and 1 TBS hemp hearts for soups, salads and oatmeal. :)
(as to doctor recommendations for omegas, my doctor suggested 2 TBS/ground flax per day!)

Someone said "the longest-lived people eat meat." According to the research of Blue Zones, Forks Over Knives, the China Study and others, that's not exactly true. While *some* long-lived cultures eat meat, it is in tiny amounts. Others eat no meat at all.

The only group in America that qualified as a long-lived, healthy culture was in Loma Linda, California. The Seventh-Day Adventists there do advocate a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle (and their restaurant has some of the best vegan food I've ever eaten)!

I found a great guide for snack-attack responses and posted it in "Plant-based Posts for Positivity and Prizes!" thread. Love to you all and gratitude for your suggestions, kindness and support!

ICANINSIGHT bohemian? Your picture looks so button up and proper. What for instance do you call bohemian? I Imagine flowing caftans etc. Im glad your estate sale was good. Enjoy your new treasures.

MrsLW. I have a heaping Tbsp of ground flaxseed every morning on my oatmeal. My doctor suggested fish for my omegas. I told her I use flaxseed. She seemed puzzled. They really have not been given much nutritional information in medical school. At least she is willing to work with me.

Hi, Kerlim! Welcome.

Mrs. L, did your dh like the new version of biscuits and gravy?

I talked my dh into eating in yesterday. He wanted to go out. That plays havoc with me!

This weekend we are going back to clean up the estate sale and I am taking my own food. We won't need to go to any estate sales for a very long time. My in-laws house was 4,000 sq. ft. and every inch packed. We have all kinds of new things and don't even need it! I did score some cute owl mugs which I am drinking my coffee from this morning.... and more. Dh has a German porcelain pipe collection and steins, wooden ducks, glass humidor and Shiner Beer mugs. I have milk glass, depression glass, carnival glass and countless other things.

I am thinking Oolala that my wardrobe is too quirky and am getting some classic pieces to add to it. I am a bohemian at heart.

Wanted to add that I also try to add ground flaxseed for Omega 3s. I add to so many dishes that I'm getting it many ways : as a thickener for salad dressing, as egg replacer. In anything I want a "nutty taste", in bread dough, and many more.

DH told me that the only thing he misses some of the breakfasts we had before going plant based no oil (pbno). So today, I made gravy and biscuits. The gravy was made with portabella mushrooms instead of sausage. I put some spinach in there, too.I sauteed the mushrooms and then added 1/4 cup flour to the juices, Browned a bit. Added enough almond milk to make a nice gravy. Added a little garlic powder, onion powder and a tich of paprika. Salt to taste.

Here is a link to Jane Esselstyns "Better" milk biscuits:

We love thrift shopping too and make the rounds often. Our usual finds are used books or glassware, but you never know - thats the fun. I especially like estate sales.

OOLALA the test is probably A1c. Its a blood test that cant tell how your blood glucose was over the past 3 months.

I made chili last evening and I had mine over potatoes. Im hungry for Mexican so maybe taco salad soon. Beans beans beans.

Doc said there is another test that is considered better or at least acceptable. Can't remember what it is.

I almost put a pink knit open-sided tunic in the give away pile, but then thought, no, I'm going to wear it a few times more. Wore it to class and some other ladies loved it so much they asked me to do a twirl. Most of my clothes are basic now: I like having a few quirky pieces for fun.

Hope you liked your spicy "fries"! (They need to call them something else.)

Oolala: I love a good thrift store find myself. Yesterday I scored a new in packge dart board and darts and a wilton 24 mini cupcake pan that is non stick and I believe will work with no oil --less calories and healthier.

Made air fried fries tonight but in my haste grabbed the cayenne pepper instead of paprika. Should be very spicy!!

I'm surprised they are not doing blood sugar testting. Watch the salt (esp hidden salt in canned foods and processed foods; caffeine) Drink lots of water!

Sorry for your health problems, Linda. emoticon

Congrats, Gram!

I went through closet and drawers and found about the same number of clothing items to get rid of. I had not promised myself I had to do that but it happened, and I am glad. I will save some nice pieces for taking to clothing swaps because I have gotten some very nice items at them.

My health plan doesn't do blood sugar testing anymore, but use something else. My doc was happy with my numbers. Ironically, my cholesterol has gone up after losing weight and eating better, but ratio of hdl/ldl is apparently good. My BP was surprisingly low, but good. I have considered getting monitor bcuz high BP runs in family, but I will wait another year.

Linda Im so sorry youve been sick. Please take care.

I had a doctor checkup today and she was happy with my lower bs and cholesterol. Also I am off one bp med. yay! She suggested since Im vegan to take a multivitamin, you know for magnesium, folate, zinc etc. I reminded her they are in vegetables and fruits. So you dont eat fish? No I have a heaping Tbsp of ground flaxseed every day my omegas. My b-12 was good but then Ive only been vegan for 5 months.

Do any of you supplement B-12?

Yum, Holly and Mrs. L!

I never made it to the estate sale. I had some physical issues. They did well and dh came home late last night thoroughly exhausted.

I did manage to make a cabbage soup with potatoes, carrots and onions in it, with a can of no salt Ro-Tel. One day I added corn and the next day I added black eyed peas to my bowl.

I have lost another 2 pounds, but I think it is only because I have been ill. Better today.

Good Morning and happy Sunday everyone! My last week was pretty hectic, sorry I haven't been on much.

If any of you get VegNews magazine, there is a really yummy tomato soup recipe in the recent issue. I made it yesterday, leaving out the oil, and I think I could eat a whole bucket! The smoked paprika and cayenne really kicked it up to the next level! I also made the Mediterranean farro salad in the Fall FOK magazine to take to work for lunch this week. Very good, IMO.

It's been cool in my neck of the woods for the past couple of days. According to the 10 day forecast I'm looking at highs in the 60s over the next week.....perfect walking weather!

I hope everyone has a fabulous rest of your weekend!

This board has been quiet. I know Linda has a cold and an estate sale.

My blood pressure finally made the drop. By 30 pts! I felt dizzy and tired yesterday and was shocked when I took my bp. I skipped one bp pill last night and its still low today. For good luck I have a check up on Monday. Hopefully there will be a medicine change.

One of the bigger thrift store chains is selling ALL clothing today and tomorrow in San Diego for two bucks an item. OMgosh, I bought a lot, but I swear, I will wear them and will get rid of f few pieces I had wanted to replace. I think I'm going on a thrift store moratorium in February.

Sorry that I misread about keto. I am not myself lately. Still full of congestion, but a bit better.

I only can look at the world through my own experiences, which may not be for everybody.

The longest lived people do eat occasional meat, mostly in the form of fish. They also eat oil. I am sticking with my plan because I seem to feel better, even though I have caught a virus. I guess that happens to everyone!

Hey, wonderful teammates!

Loving this conversation and that we are all able to hear and support one another on our different flavors of plant-based living. :)

There are indeed so many ways to eat a healthful, plant-based diet! Some do choose to eliminate or reduce oil, others go low carb or just reduce processed carbs and eat as "close to the source" as possible.

I myself follow Blue Zones - believing that the healthiest, longest-lived communities have much to teach us. :)

As to being opposed to processed vegan products, I have to say that I'm glad they exist. As SP likes to point out - all things in moderation! If we think of processed/packaged vegan foods as a rare treat, they are part of a healthful path - and are almost always better than their meat alternatives.

Wishing everyone a beautiful Friday and weekend!

Sue, big hugs.

Vegan keto seems like a very hard road. I'm assuming you feel you need it. Though you didn't ask, I've read that shorter eating windows can get the body to access ketones eating from a much wider array of foods. But that has its difficulties as well, yet in the right situations, some hard things can seem much easier.

My longevity expert Valter Longo recommends two tablespoons of olive oil a day. Long-lived people in the Blue Zones and many more using the true Mediterranean style use a fair amount of olive oil to very good effect. Longo recommends adding it just before serving instead of cooking with it. I find with trying to keep my protein lower, I almost have to add some oil to get enough calories. The other fat sources keep adding protein that takes me over my limit. A lot of the carb foods, do, too! Only fat and some fruits have no/low protein.

There are so many sources of conflicting info out there! At some point, I had to pick a few. At least for now.

I am still trying to eat down my stores, though I also bought a ton of veggies. The refrigerator is packed again. I'm itching to cook some beans but I still have enough in the freezer to not want to add any, especially since I just bought big bags of nuts (okay to buy some fats) that I store in the freezer after I open.

So sorry, SoulCollage! My thoughts and prayers are with both of you.

In the news lately is Keto as not being a healthy diet because of all the fat. I can tell you from experience that overdoing protein is bad for your kidneys. This is why I am sticking with whole food plant based. nutritionfacts.org/ has medical research into this team's way of eating (WOE)

Don't know about keto, just that tons of vegetables and veg juices can help. I know someone who did bushels of carrots juiced a bunch of times per day. And of course there are many vegetables that are cancer-fighting. I hope you and DH get some professional guidance about the best nutrition plans for him. So many hugs.

DH went into ER the other night and has esophageal cancer. Hasn’t eaten properly for months, and lost the ability to even sip water on Sunday without retching for hours. (I was out having tea with a friend I hadn’t seen in 10 years. He didn’t call.) His recent blood tests gave no hint. Doctor thought it was silent GERD.

We’ve got a rocky road, and I’m still helping with my mom in another city (my dad died in 2018). I’m not sure how often I can check in. You’re my people now. emoticon

I’m checking out “Anyway You Can” by Annette Bosworth, an intro to ketosis and cancer. I started searching for vegan keto cookbooks, found one edited by Rodale Press. Does anyone here overlap with keto and can recommend a vegan keto cookbook?

I’m reading your posts and sending love. emoticon

Very surprised about the study about strokes. Maybe those vegans ate a lot of processed food, which I don't believe is good for you. I take B12. I am still very sick today with congestion. I think that big dusty house made me worse.

Personally, I think that from observation, most vegans I know are consuming a LOT of processed foods that are fried in oil or include oil. I do take a B12 supplement and have never been low in anything, B12 or otherwise. But, I do grow alot of my own vegetables and eat from the garden (have read that b12 is naturally found in the soil, and I grow organically).

According to Dr. Caldwelll Esselstyn, author o Prevent and reverse Heart Disease Program at the Cleveland Clinic: "The reality is that oils are extremely low in terms of nutritive value. They contain no fiber, no minerals and are 100% fat calories. Both the mono unsaturated and saturated fat contained in oils is harmful to the endothelium, the innermost lining of the artery, and that injury is the gateway to vascular disease. It doesnt matter whether its olive oil, corn oil, coconut oil, canola oil, or any other kind. Avoid ALL oil."

OOLALA, my mum recently sent me a study on veganism and stroke risk. I don't know if it is the same one you read, but it said that researchers suggested that it "could be" related to low B12, though additional studies would be needed to confirm suspicions, so apparently there was no actual data on the B12 levels. They referred to it as an observational study rather than a cause-and-effect study.

I woke up to 39 degrees here in what is usually my tropical paradise....I thought I was gonna die!

OOLALA re: B12. I was tested for B12 and I think the blood test shows normal. When I see the Dr next week she will explain it. However Ive only been plant based for 4 months so I think a yearly check would be good. From what I read it takes a while before you are depleted.

A person could take a supplement and also a shot if necessary.

Nice find for you about the coffee. Tea has some caffeine, too, though not enough, I guess. My nurse sister says high blood pressure runs in our family. So far, I'm okay at checkups, knock on wood. Most days I have a 12-oz, cup of half and half decaf and caffeinated coffee. I would sorely miss it! But if the pressure goes up, ditching it would be a strategy I hope I would be brave enough to try.

I loves my vegan foods, but I can think of people who have reversed serious problems without being vegan, many here on Spark. Even most experts are biased. We are all rolling the dice with our choices because it's all about odds. This is the bet I'm making now! Others can do what they deem best.

Took a look at the menu at a Thai restaurant that is the site of a Meetup I am going to tonight. They have some interesting choices. I have my suspicions about soy, but since they don't have bean dishes I know of, I might get that. It can be a challenge getting my minimum protein- MUCH less than the average recommendation- in now that I'm actually tracking to see what's happening. I will have beans at lunch. Well, it's only one day.

Does anyone take B12? I just read of a study that showed that vegans in the test group had less heart disease but higher stroke incidences. They posited B12 was part of the problem. I can't remember now if they tracked who used supplementation or not. But even then, it's an odds thing. It was still only a fraction of the group that suffered stroke, just that it was higher than for other groups.

But I am also trying to back off from all the focus on food and health. I want to feel I've got the basics and just do it and live life in between my meals! But that is sometimes harder than managing eating, and I find myself back on the computer. It's almost more like an anxiety-reducing drug. Goooolllly.

So my blood work showed excellent results, but my blood pressure is still on the high side. Yesterday I decided to ditch the two-cup of coffee and had a nice green tea for breakfast. Later in the day I felt fatigued and checked my bp. It had dropped 27 pts on the high number!!

So it is the coffee. I need to go off it more slowly. Ill start with half-caffeine and then decaf then just tea.

Sue, I get the impression you do take good care of yourself. In fact, this team is a little more vigilant than others I've been on. Not to be catty, but I see a lot more of trying to kind of game the system other places. Or maybe I see only your angelic side here.

I am rather amazed that the plant-based movement is as promoted as it is, though I'm not complaining. It's just that I saw the other day that it's estimated that only 6% of Americans are vegetarians, never mind vegans. I guess it's like being in the arts. The stars get a lot of attention but the majority of painters, musicians, and actors are just limping along. And I'm very grateful there are such busy bees out there testing and posting more recipes than I will ever have the oomph to make. I'm flabbergasted how young some of these people are. How have they had time and money to invent and refine the hundreds of recipes they have on their sites? Of course, I see the ones first that got the most attention and those people are making some dough, but they usually had to put in a lot of time with no real guarantee of a payoff.

I think I already told that I am on a moratorium of buying anything but freggies and coffee stuff until I use up my kitchen dry and fridge stores. I have so many less starch portions than beans that I have to increase my veggies even more. Been eating some big volume meals, and even some with more calories per meal than I'm used to, but I want to meet my macros, so on I chew.

Oh, and I allow myself getting nuts, which I will soon go to Costco for. The fridge is now full to bursting nearly with freggies.

Season 3 of the Plant strong podcast is available. It won the apple podcast awards for the areas of best new podcast of 2019 and nutrition:

This is Rip Esselestyn, son of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's podcast. He is the one who was part of the Forks over Knives movie and movement. I mention this because there may be new members who would benefit from seeing and reading these media, books, websites, etc..

Made the simplest, cheapest pinto beans last night in the crockpot. I add 2.5 times the water (as in inches) as beans. The only flavoring I use is to put the stems of garlic chives I froze in the fall when collecting seeds for my garlic chives. I stuck a bunch of stems in them and will fish them out when cooked. Garlic chives have a taste between onion and garlic. The flower is so beautiful I plant them in my flower gardens. www.burpee.com/herbs/chive/chives-ga
