Kelly and Boni - have a great weekend

I am about to walk out the door for a day of learning through Univ. of Ca- Irvine. It is "Women Wellness Day" with breakout sessions and talks

See you later

Every day I am on the verge of making slight changes that would make all the difference in my life.

One day I won't be able to do this, but today is not that day

Boni - have a love long weekend. That bridge sounds amazing! I have a thing for bridges. Funny cause I used to be afraid of them.

This weekend is going to be glorious! We are hitting the road on the motorcycle tomorrow after I get back from yoga. We are packing a lunch and hitting up one of our favorite parks. Sunday after I get back from either yoga or a bike ride we will be doing some house stuff. It is supposed to be about 80 here this weekend so just about perfect! Hope y'all have a great weather weekend as well.

Well, weatherwise the weekend appears to be shaping up to be great. Lots of sunshine. It is our long Victoria Day Weekend, so there are going to be lots of cottagers hitting town to open up their cottages and put their boats in the water. The locks will be opening too. The locks are a system of where water is raised and lowered in contained areas to help boats over waterfalls from Lake Ontario to Lake Simcoe. We have a swing bridge in town which moves sideways to allow boats through the river going through town to connect from one lake to another. Then the traffic backs up waiting for it to close. There are lots of sales on this weekend. should be fun.

I'll be walking in a minute, and then do a little weedeating, then eat out, and then head to the matinee to watch Star Trek with a friend. (As you can see, the "winter blues" seem to be leaving me finally! Almost always happens, come summer.)

Terry, I left a 2" rim in the bottom of each kiddy pool. That's my thing; everyone else said to just drill holes in the sides. While I was researching these I found that these are used a lot in urban areas and even on rooftops! It's just a big planter, really.

Putting down the cardboard kills the sod [I hope!] and earthworms love it! It decomposes in a surprisingly short amount of time.

The garden looks great, Eydie! I'd say you all will have lots of success with this one (but I am glad to run into other "lazy gardeners"! Ha! I'm not lazy with flowers, but I am lazy with veggies...no idea why. But even in the years I've worked faithfully on the veggies, they didn't do well! Argh!)

Yep, Kelly, I need to get in the swing of things, for sure! But even if I do, my garden will be tiny compared to Eydies! I only plan on using maybe two or three long flower planters and maybe one large pot. Gonna keep it small and see how that works. See if I take more interest in something smaller.

I would have never dreamed of using kiddie pools for planters like that! What a great idea! I guess you cut out the "entire" bottom of it, don't you? And I had never heard of using cardboard...I guess that keep it's moist?

Every time I've tried to grow veggies, it's a disaster! (Last year, for instance, that hot summer we had burned them up). It's very discouraging when nothing you plant seems to do that well.

But the odd thing is, I'm great with flowers! People brag on my flowers. But if I try to grow a tomato? Poor little puny, sad tomatoes! Ha!

I let grass over the area I used last year for a garden--so that's apparently becoming an extension of my yard now. My new goal was to try to do what Kelly did with the container gardening....but I've yet to do anything! I still would have time, though, because we've had a cool spring and plants have not been able to thrive yet. So we'll see....

Boni, I've done that before--planting right in the bag, and it really works. Hmm, so easy. I wonder why I'd forgotten that. Thanks for reminding me!

We planted tomatoes (red and yellow), green beans, zucchini and yellow squash. I also have seeds for cucumbers, cilantro, basil and carrots. I hope to get them planted this weekend.

Here is a link to an old conversation that I think Boni is referring to. There is a lot of great information here.

Eydie, I think it was IMVEGAN last year who posted that she plants stuff right in the bags of dirt. Pokes holes in them to plant the seeds and pokes holes in the bottom for drainage.
I have a very small 8 * 8 garden with one cherry tomato plant, beans, carrots, radishes, lettuce, one zucchini, a jalapeno, swiss chard and herbs and garlic. It will probably be a jungle by the time everything grows.

Kelly, that's me too! I haven't had a productive garden in so long that it just got to be embarrassing to still be out there thrashing away with no veggie payoff to show for it.

I'm feeling good about it this year. [fingers crossed!] Our garden area is much smaller and hopefully more manageable.

What did you plant?

Hi Eydie! I'm gardening if you want to call it that. I got these three containers and am starting with 6 plants. I'm hoping I can stay with it and keep the things watered. So far it's been 2 weeks and nothing has died yet. LOL I'm horrible with plants. If this little experiment goes well then I'll expand next year.

Who's gardening this year? emoticon

I used to love it, but then just got so tired of turning my back for a day and then having a chaotic mess with the weeds taking over. There's this one weed in particular that's relentless! Grrrr.....
So even though we have a place in the country and almost feel duty bound to have a vegetable garden, we were going to pass on it this year but that didn't feel right, so we're experimenting with different methods so we can have a small low-maintenance, no-weed garden. We're doing straw bale gardening, "lasagna" beds, and gardening in kiddy pools! It all looks so good, and all the plants seem happy and I'm feeling excited about gardening again!

Yes, Terry, I just finished night three of covering up the plants to protect them from frost, but today is much warmer. Here is a fun link about growing stuff from kitchen scraps. Those of you with children might have fun doing this with them. www.homemadesimple.com/en-ca/garden/

Off to put some more herbs in my garden and to stake the peony before it gets too tall.

Boni, I had told earlier that this morning it was 70 degrees here and warm and windy. Well, I went outside in my shorts and short sleeved shirt...but by the time I got to mom's I realized that the breeze we were having was COLD! I drove back home and put on my long pants and long sleeved shirt!!! Summers not here quite yet!

(And tonight it's supposed to drop into the low 40's...so we aren't in danger of freezing like you good folk in Canada are, but it just "feels" like freezing here!)

Hope all had a great mothers day. Mom enjoyed having the kids pop in and we all had a good day of enjoying being with her. She's a sweetheart!

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, grandmothers and god mothers on the team. It is a special job you do.

Spent time with my family last night. We had a lovely celebration. Today I'm off to a challenging yoga class with a friend. After that I'm swapping out my winter clothes. Mother Nature may not be ready but I am. LOL

Have a great day everyone. I hope you spend it doing something you love.

LOL!! I was going through my recipes this morning also, Carol! Ha! Several months ago I bought a kind of photo album to save my favorite recipes in...but I've yet to organize them into it. I have a ton of vegan recipe prints out (not to mention those saved on my computer) that I've yet to get in there where I can easily find them! Gotta do that!

Today I was looking for a recipe for a no-sodium soy sauce that I had stored somewhere in the recipe pile. I found it and made it this morning. I've yet to try it on anything, though, so I'm not sure. I did make one recipe before of it about a year ago, but did not like it. But this latest recipe shows more promise (though I think all low sodium recipes I've tried so far have a "weak" taste to them...but those of us who need to lower their salt intake probably need to just accept that reality.)

Thanks, Terry! I'll add that Amazon Instant Videos also has quite a selection of food-based, industry-based videos (I guess I should say anti-industry). If you're a member of Amazon Prime, most of them are free. That's how I first saw Forks Over Knives, and the one you mentioned - Fat. Sick & Nearly Dead. There are a ton there too.

I hope the fund raiser goes well Vegfaery. I helped organize a Breast Cancer Mother's Day fundraiser luncheon for a few years running. So I can appreciate the work involved. People were incredibly generous with draw prize donations, items to bid on and money. And the inn where we held it gave us a great deal as well. This is going to be a quiet weekend for me. It is going to rain, so a friend and I are hitting the local yarn shops tomorrow. I need blocking wires for a lace shawl that I have almost finished. I see a lot of reading in the next couple of days and my new floral umbrella and matching boots are going to get a workout.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I did a long search on Hulu recently to see if they had any alternative health or vegan documentary's. They had a few. They were:

1. Vegucated
2. The Gerson Miracle
3. Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead

These are free for anyone to watch. I had never seen "Vegucated" or "The Gerson Miracle" and watched them this past week--both very good documentaries! Vegucated was an interesting experiment in how they challenge three people to become vegans for two weeks and all the things they do to educate them in that time. Was interesting to see if all would remain vegan after it was all over. (But some of the shots from the animal cruelty films they show the people are disturbing--which is a good thing to bring about change, but some people might not want to see that.)

The Gerson Miracle most folks know about: an alternative treatment for cancer that relies on vegetable juices as "veggie chemo". It makes a powerful argument. (But some of the video reminds me of a film made in the 1950's! Very old fashioned and bad music! LOL!)

Best I recall, "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" was about using smoothies and juices for weight loss (it's been a while since I've seen it.)

Hulu has a ton of free documentary's to see...and I do mean a TON!!! Most of them nobody would probably care to see, but there are a few interesting topics here and there.

I've been having some computer trouble too, DS9, but nothing major. Mine mostly involves You Tube videos.

You Tube has grown to where it has a lot of the old movies and shows I grew up with, so in the evenings sometimes I watch those. But lately a lot of the videos about half way through shut down and have to restart--very aggravating. Probably some computer glitch or minor virus. If it keeps up, I will be taking my computer to the shop.

Sorry for the computer troubles. Those can be so stressful.

Today is going to be a pretty easy day for me. No one is in my office and all my work is done, so I've declared it a study and yoga day. I brought my mat so I can work on some things for training and get in a nice practice this afternoon. I have a feeling it will be this way a lot this summer.

No I don't usually follow their lead for a theme. I'll probably make a big salad for all to share and then maybe something small for myself. I'll be running around most of the day so it will have to be something easy. I'm secretly hoping WF has something that I can bring.

Loving our new coffee shop! It's cool to have a "place" to come and sit and chat all during the week and any time of the day!

Vibeke: Yes, ride those waves of positive feelings whenever they come and milk them for all they are worth! I'm so glad you are having some good experiences with them now. I also have anxiety issues, as you know, and kinda have good years and bad years. Motivation comes and goes--kinda like the waves of the ocean. But usually the sunny weather of summer works some real miracles on me, mood wise, so I hope we both have wonderful summers and get a lot done!

Kelly: Just this week I looked up vegan cheese recipes--but it was for dip (have had some odd cravings for cheese dip lately!) Do you plan to make something vegan and cheesy, too, since a cheesy dish is what will be there at the gathering? Wish I had some ideas to offer, but nothing comes to mind at the moment. You're a great cook, so I'm sure you'll come up with something really tasty!

WOW! You are really on a roll. I'm glad you found your stride.

Not too much going on here today. The office is empty so I'm using the free time to study.

This weekend we are celebrating Mother's Day and my Goddaughter's birthday so I need to come up with a dish for myself for dinner. The family will be having lasagna with cheesy garlic bread.

Hi there! :D

I am enjoying the beautiful spring weather that has finally found my part of the world. The magnolias are in full bloom along with daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, and more! It's a great time to be alive! :D

I'm back to eating lots of raw foods and juicing. After a four week hiatus, I'm also back to exercising - walking the dog primarily.

I think a positive attitude is the best kind of attitude and I'm hoping I'll ride the wave of improved health (I suffer from anxiety and depression) with this great optimism I'm feeling right now.

Tonight I'm catering a Breast Cancer awareness fundraiser at a local clothing store so I've made a big batch of Korean Scallion pancakes!

What are you doing today?
