What the Health is what got me started down this road. I watched Vegucation and one other one on Netflix, the name escapes me. Also saw Dr. Joel Fuhrman on tv this weekend (local PBS station). I have been dropping a half pound every two days since I started this.

I ordered a bunch of stuff from Vitacost.com, and it came today. I used nutritional yeast on my salad, along with some organic vegan salad toppers (edamame, sunflower seeds, cranberries) that I got at costco. I had black beans and red quinoa for lunch. I bought muesli to have for breakfast with some almond milk, as I am sick of having hot oatmeal in this awful weather, even though it's still cool at 6 am when I eat.

I am sure your bloodwork will be better. Dropping weight and adding cardio workouts will help even more. My next bloodwork is in October, I know I can surprise the doc with a big improvement.

The soy creamer from trader joes does an adequate job on the coffee. Still on the fence about that.

Today is day 14 for me. It doesn't feel that long. I don't miss meat, although I do miss the convenience of all my old recipes. I don't miss eggs, which were my breakfast of choice for half a century. I don't even miss cheese, which was included in so many of my old recipes. No miracles happening on the outside of my body, but I'm trusting that they are happening on the inside. I'm going for blood work in a couple of weeks. Really looking forward to those results.

Jo - Don't give up! Watch "What the Health" on Netflix or online if you need to be convinced to stay away from dairy.

Stopped at Trader Joes, stocked up on greens: mixed greens, kale, and arugula...looked at their coffee creamer options. The Almond creamer had titanium dioxide in it as a whitener, so I went with the organic soy creamer. It's not bad.But I wonder if it would be healthier to just give up and buy some organic half and half, as it had a long list of ingredients.

I was excited to find lots of meat substitutes in Walmart's freezer section. I try to stay away from them myself, but if it makes life easier for my husband I'm happy to buy them. Today I'm going to try out a recipe for macaroni and cheese that involves nutritional yeast, sweet potato and cashews, among other things. My husband, bless his heart, is willing to try everything, but at least I have the Morningstar Farms stuff to fall back on if he doesn't like it. I think he's still dreaming of ribs on the barbecue, but he doesn't complain. I'm hoping his acid reflux will disappear and convince him to stick with the vegan lifestyle. Also, I'm hoping to find a few simple but tasty recipes that he'll enjoy. When I was vegetarian, many years ago, one of the reasons I stopped doing it was because I felt like I spent my entire life in the kitchen. I quite enjoy the cooking, but the cleanup can get a bit overwhelming. Know any good recipes for vegan ranch dressing?

Slinky, sounds like you are getting the hang of it. My husband is a legume-hater, so I am back to what I had to do last time I was active on SP--cook for him and then cook my own healthier fare. Luckily, what I cook for both of us for dinner usually lasts for two or more nights, that takes some of the strain off.

I need to find something vegan and rich to put in my coffee. Tried almond milk and soy milk so far, they just aren't enjoyable.

Hi, everyone! I'm on day 12 of life as a vegan. It's all a bit confusing and overwhelming at the moment, but I'm sure I'll get a handle on it eventually. Trying new things and spending a lot of time in the kitchen, but I think that once I find a few go-to recipes, things will start to fall into place. So far I'm quite enjoying the food, but I've been using commercially prepared sausages and burgers because my husband is also joining me in this venture. He's a country guy who has spent his entire life hunting, fishing, crabbing and clamming, so it's like living on a new planet for him. I'm hoping to find meals that are tasty enough that he won't miss the meat. It's easier for me because I was vegetarian for 17 years. That was a long time ago, but I'm not as locked into the meat mentality. I really admire him for going into this with an open mind and not whining about the food. Thank goodness he loves beans!

I am slowly evolving, using up the old stuff in my pantry that I won't be buying anymore, I don't want to throw food away. Donating the packaged food, but there are a few things in the fridge I can't donate.

So, I am eating less animal protein, phasing in more and more plant based meals. I figured out that I need about ten glasses of water today to keep my body happy with all the extra fiber.

I made a vegan banana bread that turned out well! And I have been portion controlling it to one slice a day.

Ordered a bunch of vegan pantry items from VitaCost. Found a recipe for black bean quinoa burgers that I'd like to try tonight.

That's it from my corner of the world!

I"m here....taking my virtual coffee break. Took my little chihuahua (who has a bad heart murmur) into the vet, as I do every 2 months for her check up, and she's no worse, so that's good news for us! Hope everybody's got nothing but good news today!

I get emails from Dr. Barnard's blog-
Letter to Bob Harper www.pcrm.org/nbBlog/bob-harper-inspi

And saw this-

I was still having a couple of eggs a week...I think we are so brainwashed that I figured it might be healthy but I am not going to anymore. I would get them from my local farmer. I guess I thought vitamin D and B12 but vascular disease runs in my family so..nah...no eggs

Hello, team! emoticon I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I've been doing quite well the last few days. I am feeling awesome. I am finding the more veggies I eat, the more I crave. I went to work without any veggies and now I feel "off." I just want to go home and eat a big giant salad. emoticon

As a former meat eater, I am often tempted to eat meat. I'm at work and we are served dinner. Tonight it's hot turkey sandwiches. I love hot turkey sandwiches. However, I have decided not to eat it. Any support and prayers would be greatly appreciated.

Seems the best way. Just move forward. Progress doesn't usually come in one fell swoop.
I view becoming vegan as something rather profound, but it can be a journey. I've never seen a journey that's a straight line.

Confession time, team! I ate some dairy products today. I do not feel guilty about what I ate. I am upset because I ate for the wrong reasons, I ate because I was tired and I gave into my cravings instead of "riding them out." I will not let this one hiccup discourage me. I will make sure to continue to pursue a vegan lifestyle.

That's how I felt when I went vegan, even though I was lacto-ovo vegetarian since I was a teen. I was still stuck in my patterns and becoming vegan made the world of food so much more creative! And so healthy. :-)

Great job NEW_ME!!

I used to put together an all veggie sand at a 'popular' sandwich place. Then I thought why not make my own so I bought Francisco French sandwich rolls, asst'd veggies(lettuce, tomato, onions, olives, bell peppers, carrots), bread and butter pickles and it was better and cheaper! I do the same with veggie pizzas and pita pizzas. Love when I don't have to pay an arm and a leg to eat healthy.

Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. I hope all is well. I have been doing great the last few days. The other night I went out to dinner with a friend. We went to a barbecue joint. Well this place has "build your own burger" on the menu. I ordered a burger (without the burger) and had them pile on the veggies ~~ mushrooms, lettuce, pickles. emoticon It was so good and the best part it only cost me $4.

I hope everyone had a lovely Valentine's Day. I spent the evening with 2 (of my 4) children. We had a nice simple dinner and then my youngest showed me the "Disney Cookbook" she got at the school library. It was a nice day.

I'm back from my retreat! 10 days of silent meditation with no internet, no talking, no reading. I feel so fresh and light!

Unfortunately a lot of terrible things have happened all over the world in those days and I'm slowly getting caught up on current affairs. Wow! This is a challenge to my Vipassana practice, to be at peace hearing about all this.

May all beings be well!

Hi John,
Thanks for posting. Lots of people go vegan one step at a time. It's great that you're working on it. Please let us know if you have questions or if you'd like recipes for making things traditionally made with eggs and cheese.

For fun I'm posting a link to the "cheese page" of one of my favorite vegan recipe/cooking video sites, cookingwithplants.com, which has all varieties of vegan cheeses you can make yourself. cookingwithplants.com/vegan-cheese/

Happy holidays and wishing you a great new year.

You're strong-willed! I forget everything when I'm at a social event and start talking to people and then I just eat what everyone else is eating! Like at the book launch the other night..I had a brownie, chocolate truffle and a bunch a flax crackers with edamame pate.

When I said cute shoes I meant the Ally mary janes by Vegetarian Shoes. They aren't even heels! My PF is that bad. Neutral running shoes with custom orthotics is the only way for me. I've reversed my progress a bit by wearing the mary janes a bit, urghh!

Isa has a new holiday cookbook...get that one then stop buying cookbooks! I actually don't have it myself yet but there's a book sale at the Toronto Veg Association next weekend so I'm going to get a few new ones then. They are having a bake sale the same day...will try to keep my purchases to books!

Last night I went to see Love Actually and we heckled all through it. I still love that movie though there are some problematic things happening.

When I was a teenager I "decided" I didn't like potato chips. I would eat too many of them and knew they weren't good for me. Making that decision and then reconfirming it to myself whenever I saw them or saw a bag actually worked. I've hardly ever eaten them since, but the few times I have it's been one chip and I can note that the taste is nice, but I still have that strong feeling that I don't like them.

Haha, but when I was a teen I didn't do the same thing with corn chips and when I was in college I could go through a whole giant bag of them at one time. It wasn't pretty. At some point (maybe a few years after college?) I decided it was time to do that decision thing with corn chips, too. Crazy, but it worked! I look at a corn chip now and think "meh!" (or sometimes "gah!") It sort of naturally extended to other highly processed gunk, so for instance I never crave Oreooooos.

But that doesn't work with everything, and I can do real damage with "healthy treats" like Chef AJ's chocolate truffles made from dates, nuts, peanut butter, and cocoa. Or just plain dates and nuts. Sometimes I just have to keep stuff out of the house.

My trick is just to limit it to having it with family/friends- so around kitchen table
And just decide not to hear that little voice inside that remembers there are treats in th ehouse because most of the time there are not.
- I still have about 25 pounds to lose and will see if I allow them back but I don't think so- my DH will go through a whole bag of tortilla chips... sigh..

The potato reset is like the mini diet that Mary Mcdougall came up but you choose potatoes or what Andrew Taylor aka Spudfit who was interviewed by Chef AJ and Rich Roll. A. Taylor is an Australian who decided to eat nothing but potatoes for a year.
I won't do it for a year. So - sweet potatoes or purple or etc but the idea being to just simplify and get away from food as entertainment.
Penn Jillette did it to for 2 weeks and then follow the Eat to Live diet and lost 100+ pounds

SHOES!!! love my shoes- got a wedding this Sunday and I will wear my red heels prolly...I know it is not good ...but I don't very often.

I will be running again soon too. I walk-run now.
oh an dyes- I love her Caulipots! Great cookbook
I had to stop buying cookbooks...was a crazy habit!!

The book is interesting. It has stories and I think there is a recipe at the end of each story. She told a few that evening and served appetitizers. One of the stories is about her mother being denied cookies because she is Japanese....followed by a cookie recipe ... and she gave out little bags with 2 cookies in them and implored us to share one of them with someone. Very nice gesture. I didn't know before I went....but the chef isn't vegan, even though her restaurant was vegan! She said she eats vegan often for environmental reasons, and she wanted her restaurant to showcase amazing plant based dishes.

Do you have a trick for allowing yourself a few treats but not going overboard? I'd love to learn it!

What's a potato rest? I love potatoes! My fave is Isa's Caulipots with a coconut bac'n garnish!

I wear "neutral shoes" with custom orthotics. I was getting some relief but then started walking a lot more and wore cute shoes a few times...now I'm back to running shoes every day because I want to start running again in the New Year. sniff! I will look into minimal shoes, thanks!

My holiday plans are to eat healthy plant based E2L + Dr. Greger based BUT my kids will be around for the holidays and such things as rosemary choc chip cookies from Isa's book will be made and we will most likely reactivate Sally the Sourdough.... so going to allow so I don't get the on the wagon mentality but enjoy some of those treats WITH my kids and friends- that is key so I don't mindlessly eat them later on

Also I have made a great loaf with mushroom gravy but am looking to make a another GaZham lol

Before they head home I may do a potato rest. I went off on a keto experiment...don't ask I just like to understand better things I don't agree with and anyhow...might need a little potato time.

Feels so great to be back to vegan eating and cooking!

Also- Magnolia I have a bone spur and have been a runner on and off for ..um oh my- 40 years and was surprised to find lighter and more minimal running shoes helped me..

Your dinner tonight sounds like a nice event. Let us know how it was and a little about the book. :)

I went to the gym before work two days in a row! After not really exercising since Sept-Oct when I got plantar fasciitis. I still can't run but I'll make a return-to-running plan with my physiotherapist soon.

A friend invited me to a challege with her other friends for December....we each paid $10 to the organizer. We post our weight on the Facebook secret page on Mondays, and if we have either maintained or lost by New Year's Eve, we get our $10 back. If some people don't make it, their $10 gets divided among those that made it. It sounds a little harsh but it seems like a happy, supportive group so far!

Tonight I'm going to an event hosted by a vegan chef from Ottawa called Caroline Ishii. This is her book:

Welcome to the team everyone. What would you like to see here on this site? It gets very slow at this time of year and I'd love some ideas to make things pop and get more interest.

Hi Star-Dancer,

I am new to this team too. I am planning to try some of the recipes that SHIVAMOON posted for Plantsgiving.

Hi everyone, I just joined the group and thought I step in ad say hi.

A Native American elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: Inside of me there are two wolfs. One of the wolfs is mean and evil. The other wolf is good. The mean wolf fights the good wolf all the time. When asked which wolf wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, The one I feed the most." -George Bernard Shaw

Welcome Mariana! How about watching some vegan cooking shows?

There's a cooking podcast for Jasmin from Our Hen House. She only started eating vegetables at age 30 and she's learning to cook now!
www.ourhenhouse.org/cooking/

Not all of these are healthy, but this is a YouTube channel someone has made of pro cooking shows which have vegan recipes. They're accidentally vegan recipes by pro chefs like Martha Stewart....collected by a vegan:

Another way to get veg and fibre in easily...smoothies! Here's a recipe which vegetables....and enough fruit that it tastes sweet. It's amazing to get kale and celery in with your morning smoothie while feeling like you had a sweet treat!

1 banana
1-2 leaves kale
1-2 inches cucumber
1 stalk celery
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
7-10 frozen strawberries
1 1/2 cup frozen raspberries
1 tbsp raw cacao
1 scoop Vega One vitamin powder
bit of water to suit consistency you like

Trust me...this does not taste like vegetables! Berries can be expensive but they are worth the investment and this is something you can sip on all morning to feel full, you won't need to eat breakfast because this is filling and loaded with vitamins! Do you have a good blender?

Hi and welcome, Marianda!

I dunno - I've always liked veggies but I like them even more as a vegan. My taste buds have gotten sharper and I appreciate their flavors more.

The tricks used to get them into kids work for adults too - particularly grating them into sauces such as spaghetti sauce and blending cooked veggies then adding them to soups. But I bet your taste buds will grow to appreciate them more as you spend more time being vegan. Good luck!

Hi everyone; I just joined this team, hoping that I might start liking veggies more. Is anyone here, who didn't like veggie, but now does? Maybe I could get some help?
