I feel better when I eat this way, too. I finally found a plan that works for me (not pushing it, just glad I found it). I do the McDougall program, and so far, 10 weeks and 28 pounds down.

Hey, Night. Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah, both my partners would rather eat burgers and pizza than anything. Fortunately, the one I live with is super-supportive and makes me stuff I can eat.

After I read the Barnard book, I ended up deciding to go with the McDougall Maximum Weight Loss program so I could quickly start curing myself of the heart and hypoglycemia issues. It's working! 25 pounds lost in two months, and so much more energy and fewer symptoms than before I started.

Hey there, Idgie;

I hear you about partners. One of mine is a stubborn meat eater. We've compromised on her not cooking meat in the house. She really likes Beyond Meat burgers so that's a good compromise, too (though I can't eat that very often.)

Any tips you'd like to share from Barnard? I've seen his online stuff but haven't read his books.

Hi, new here, but returning to this way of eating. Been struggling with low blood sugar, and I know how to fix blood sugar problems. Now just gotta stay motivated to do it. Reading Dr. Barnard's diabetes book (I don't have diabetes, but a lot of the principles are the same) and making sure to keep the house stocked with healthy stuff. It's a little harder living with an omnivore, but at least my partner's a supportive omnivore.

Hello all!

I've been amiss but hopefully not too missed. How's everyone?

Linda: I am giving you a stern glance right now honey! Please, please be as gentle as possible with yourself and try like anything to avoid thinking in terms of BAD or GOOD -- both about the food and about yourself!

It doesn't help and only hurts to beat ourselves up, my dear. I know. I do it, too. Think of it as a bit of a backslide or a grand experiment in the world of "how's this vegan thing working for you?"

It's great feedback that your body is giving you. I am thankful that you had that message. Onward!

Em - 7 miles!!!! Holy wow. I was on vacation in British Columbia this past week and 6 miles a day walking around just about did me in. But in a good way. Sounds lovely!

Now tell me about peas and porridge, please? Is it... tasty at all?

I am now thinking of:

Pease porridge hot
Pease porridge cold
Pease porridge in the pot
9 days old.

Which I never understood, but perhaps you can share some details and inspiration?

What is CSA please?

For the first time in two months, since I began this journey, I was BAD. Dh ordered a piece of chocolate cake last night and I had about a third of it. Not vegan. I weighed more this morning and I have Dr. appt. today. Not a good idea. Back to vegan. Anxious to learn my lab results. At least I was good before the blood draw!

Physical therapy is leaving me sore, but for the first day since I started it, no lower back pain! It moved to the hips. That is very good! emoticon

Hello hello me too! Right now, I'm focused on making a lot of veggie stock which I've just started doing from all of my scraps. So good -- but this time maybe a little TOO much and a little TOO long. It's a bit... strong.

Anyone getting a CSA this year? DO they have Farm to Customer boxes in England?

Eating healthy wheat again. Going without made no difference.

I am taking homeopathic allergy drops. They work better than the OTC meds and no side effects!

Would like to talk with other vegans. How about it?

ell, I am finding the wheat is NOT making a difference after all. I will find out Friday if I should stick with this eating style or not. It will be a trip to the endocrinologist for lab results.

Yes, I find it very strange that just cutting wheat has made a difference. I lost another half pound.

Interesting what a huge effect that foods can have. We are all different of course, if only we came with instructions. Haha.
My doctor has given me an EOR. Exercise on Referral, at the gym. I'm so pleased with this, the usual cost is prohibitive but we pay £2 a session. So I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in next Friday.
I already walk 30 plus miles a week too.

PT kicked my bu** yesterday. Today I am sore and tired, but in a good way. It is good for me.

Yes, so looking forward to Vegas. We are not big gamblers, but like the shows, etc. Penny slots is my thing for entertainment, but winning would be nice, too!

I have lab work this week. That will tell the story about this way of life. Going to endocrinologist next week.

Good morning!

I've heard that the vegan options in Vegas have grown substantially. There is one casino... Begins with a W?... That offers an entire vegan menu separately from their main one!

It really sounds as though you have a great protective on moving forward and being gentle with yourself. PT can be a struggle sometimes, as many of us know. Hoping you feel better each day!

Wow on the potatoes! I do enjoy being able to eat potatoes. I had some for breakfast. Frozen hash browns with no oil and no salt. I put a bit of salt for flavor.

I am cooking eggplant now to use in dishes this week.

Some old book I have says you should eat seasonal vegetables. In this day and age, we have everything in abundance year round, except the summer fruits, which I love! Cherries, nectarines, peaches, plums.

I think my body is taking a while to become healthy and then I will lose weight. Physical Therapy is helping my back so I can exercise more. We are going to Vegas soon and I plan to eat at buffets, so that I can stick to my vegan plan. Not sure what the breakfast offerings will be, but I can have oatmeal if they have soy or almond milk or hash browns... and fruit, of course.

Yes! This is the general chat thread!

I've stickied it so it stays at the top. Devora's new "polls" thread will be the second sticky.

Happy Anniversary, Linda!!!!!

I love Penn Jillette! He and Teller are incredible.

I'm slowly coming back to SP and excited that so many folks are joining the team and wanting to talk. Thanks for being here, everyone!

It was Penn Jillette and Ray Cronise that inspired my potato time BUT I decided not to- I made too much good food today!!

yeh... lol the more I think about it- I love potatoes too but...

- I figure as long as I don't add salt and oil I will be ok. I don't have much of a sweet tooth anyway so I just eat fruit when I feel like something sweet.

I eat between meals when I'm hungry. I eat leftovers or whatever batch cooked meals I have on hand, or fruits and veggies. Right now I have lentil veggie stew, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, corn on the cob and sweet potatoes ready to eat in the fridge. I also have bananas on the counter and raspberries and apples in the fridge. I love apples sprinkled with a little balsamic vinegar and sweet potatoes sprinkled with cinnamon and salt and pepper.. sooo good!

I ate only potatoes for almost a month, lost weight too. Got the idea from Spud Fit (I think that's his youtube name). I had potato pancakes, mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, oven fries (need to get an air fryer), and sweet potatoes... all cooked oil free but I ate them spiced up or with condiments. I went through 15 lbs of potatoes a week, easily. My husband was amazed I could eat so much potatoes. Don't think I'd do it again. I love potatoes but I love beans, rice and veggies too.

Linda- I stopped snacking. For me it helps. Maybe it is because I am older not sure.
Also plenty of greens help.

Awhile back I ate nothing but potatoes for 1 week and I lost 6 pounds.
I was considering doing that next week...for 5 days anyhow.

I am having a second cup of coffee, unusual for me! LOL.

I think I figured out why the weight is not coming off, the chips (although healthy ones, somewhat!) and snacking. Today I am cutting that and getting enough to eat at my three meals!

I blogged about no weight loss yet, but I am planning to stay the course. I am not eating junk or the "fake" meats, etc. so I am eating what I am supposed to. I think exercise will help and I am going to physical therapy for lower back pain and that should help immensely!

Enjoy your break.

I've read that leg cramps can sometimes be a symptom of not enough water and or needing more magnesium in one's diet. Maybe you're getting enough of both now. In any case, I'm so happy for you.

Tried on some blouses that were too snug earlier this year, and they now fit comfortably along with several pair of jeans I haven't worn in a few years. I'm going on a trip next month and the peace of mind achieved from knowing I have something comfortable to wear and look good in too, is worth more than I can say.

I saw your post and I have noticed that about my back too! Isn't that marvelous?

My dh wants to eat the plant based diet at night. He is saying he is feeling better. He eats meat for lunch. He eats lunch out every day. I am not going back to that. I like this too much. I love being able to eat potatoes and bread (whole grain).

DH is a meat eater and I don't see that changing in the near future. He cooks his own meals because I can't bring myself to cook foods that aren't healthy for him. I cook plant based enough for both of us, but don't push him to eat it.

I've noticed less chronic back pain since I've eliminated the remaining processed foods from my diet (mostly bread and cereal). Probably a combo of less inflammatory foods and weight loss.

Yes, barbecue is a sport here, teams and big money purses. They have huge pits they pull behind their big trucks to the events and start cooking the night before. My 3rd cousin was big into it and dropped dead of a heart attack at age 59. He was my age.

My dh is struggling. Said he wanted to do this, but still eating meat. He likes that we are being vegan at dinner, though! Oh, well. I try, I don't push.

My dh finally watched Forks Over Knives with me. At the end, he said, "Ok, I am going to do it. I am going to eat whole plant foods." Not sure if he was serious or placating me. At home, I cook, so I know he will eat that way at home. I don't ask what he has for lunch every day. I do know he wanted to start taking his lunch. We will see.

This is Texas where barbecue is a way of life. Also dh is addicted to sugar.

I will tell them, but I can't get new doctors. I love my doctors. One saved my life. They all push the Ideal Protein diet. I will take in some of the scientific studies next visits. My results should speak for themselves.

I know several people who do the keto diet. I have told them about the kidney issue. They are still doing keto because you do lose weight. However, I am losing weight on vegan diet.

I have a lot to catch up on here. First of all, big hugs and love coming your way, Em. I can't imagine how painful that's been.

And what a wake-up call. I'm just over 50 and in the same boat. Just came back from my doctor who basically put me in carb prison. (More on that on another thread...) Really good to know about your keto experiences, Em. Would love to know what you're doing now. (I also have at least 30 pounds to lose and think WFPB is a good idea.)

Linda, good to hear about your experiences also. I say please tell your doctors! It's important for them to know. If research like "The China Study," McDougall, Fuhrman and the Physicans Committee for Responsible Medicine aren't enough evidence for them, time to find some new doctors (or at least see if you can get a vegan-friendly nutritionist or naturopathic doctor on your team.

Really inspired by your post, KOOKERJ8. And welcome! If there is a name you'd like us to use for you, you can put it in the signature line for your posts (I can help you do that if you like.) Good to hear about high fat low carb as that is what my doctor pushed on me today. Eeeeeee....

Hugs and happy-almost-Friday, everyone!

I had a friend who died of pancreatic cancer. He was vegan for ethical reasons but ate garbage. I miss him . He died at age 50.

I will be 57 in May. I was only on keto for a month - I had so many awful side effects I stopped but I lost weight...but it was not healthy-

the low carb damaged my kidneys. I tried vegan before but did not do it correctly... now eating whole unprocessed plant foods, following the McDougall plan and have the movie Forks Over Knives. I have lost a few pounds. I went through some detox symptoms. Now I have sinus issues, I think it is still detox. I am older than the rest of you, most likely, and many health issues. So I think the detox is normal for me.

Hi Zipitup.
Im fairly new here and are doing similar approach, I go walking with a bit of jogging thrown in. I tried High Fat Low carb and keto. Even did a few weeks of 24 hour fasting all that happened was that my fasting blood sugar went up.
So I've been Plant Based Whole Food for about two weeks now and am feeling much better. I did miss all the fat for a few days, but now Im oil and fat free, eating high carb with starch and veg I feel fine.
Finally after years of feeling guilty every time I eat, I feel free to enjoy food. I have began to lose weight, just a slight shift downward.
It wold be great to do a challenge or just keep track each week by logging exercise and weight loss and a few good recipes too.

Stuffing my face with plants.

That is fantastic. I'm following Fuhrman...Greger and Esselstyn- a little more fat than the Esselstyns say to. My keto experiment was back in October of 2016. I did not want to dismiss it without trying it out first.

I'm eating starch based whole plant foods and recently put the focus on 'whole'.

I have lost weight on both low carb and keto but I feel very weird on it and constipated. I know there are ways to deal with it but I feel healthier eating vegan- healthy vegan

McDougall's is a great plan

I need to lose weight. I am on my 3rd week of vegan eating. Yesterday I was craving sweets, and overate grains. Must be better today. Also I am going through a mild detox. Some do, some don't. Following McDougall's plan.

I did lose weight on the low carb. All the doctors are on board with it nowadays. However, it can damage weak kidneys. Overdoing the protein is not good for many.

I have the Forks Over Knives movie, will order the book when I can or visit the library. The movie is eye opening!
